A must watch for any Dexter fan

Dexter is easily one of my favorite tv shows of all-time and one of the few shows I can watch all the way through several times over without getting bored. It's hard for me to put into words how much I loved the original show. The only thing that's not good about it is the ending. Even though the ending was pretty bad but that still doesn't take away from how good the show is overall. So with that said I was really looking forward to Dexter: Original Sin and it did not disappoint. Patrick Gibson who plays a young Dexter Morgan absolutely kills it, as does the rest of the cast. This is a must watch for any fan of Dexter.

The more Dexter the better

I need to start off this review by saying how much I absolutely loved Dexter. I loved it so much that I've watched it all the way through several times and was never bored. Then came Dexter: New Blood in 2021 and even though it wasn't as good as the original I still enjoyed it. The ending to both of those shows were awful, especially Dexter: New Blood. Now comes Dexter: Original Sin with the origin story of a young Dexter Morgan and how he became everyone's favorite serial killer. It also brings back the younger version of most of the original characters too. I don't know how they keep doing it but none of the Dexter shows disappoint. All 3 are a fun watch. I hope to see this Dexter series go for several more seasons.

This is for Dexter hardcore fans

Thank you for this series ,and most important its nearly impossible to have a bad finale this time. It is exacly what i personally and i guess most of Dexter fans needed after the disasterous finale of new blood. Cant wait for the next episode, the vibes from the original series hit so hard , the cast seems great picks overall ,main actor with Halls voice in the background is almost like he is playing all over again. Music and songs lovely, script also very nice for a pilot episode ,everything seem to go in the right direction ,but im so scared to be happy because this was exactly how we all felt with new blood as well. But hey at least we have a Dexter series again.

Low expectations with a high payoff

I went into this with pretty low expectations and mostly just excited for Resurrection. The beginning of the first episode was cringey with the edits and the CGI cop car, and I thought "oh boy, this is going to flop". By the end of the first episode, I was eating crow, as the actors embodied their characters perfectly and the story showed immense promise.

While we know much of the backstory already, the first episode held a couple of surprises that add to the depth of some of the characters we've grown to know and love, and adds some background into the decisions made by those characters. Only one episode in and I'm hooked already!

Pretty good so far! :)

I'm a big-time Dexter fan, through and through. Dexter (seasons 1-8) is the only series I rewatch all the time.

Like Harry (according to Dexter), change is not easy for me.

So when Dexter: New Blood came out, at first the change of scenery, the cold, the absence of some beloved cast members and the lack of humour and latin music were a huge disappointment to me. However, after watching it as a standalone show (with no comparisons to the original), it grew on me.

Now, with this new show, of course we're not used to the new faces in the cast. We all remember the young Dexter, Deb and Harry to look different, even Laura Moser.

However, I think it may be unfair to judge the casting as we're not in the shoes of the casting directors and producers. I believe they had to consider many aspects besides just similar looks.

Yes, we all wish that Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter, James Remar and the rest of the original cast could magically play the younger versions of their own characters, but time only goes one way. (Bonus: I really like Christian Slater. He's awesome as always!)

So far, after watching the first episode twice, I like it. I think everyone did a pretty decent job filling in those big Dexter shoes.

I cannot deny, actually, the fact that I'm now even more excited to watch Dexter: Resurrection after getting a glimpse of Dexter being revived in the emergency room.

In short, I think this show is cool and will probably grow on me even more with time.

If you're a Dexter fan, go in with no specific expectations or judgment. I believe you'll enjoy it!

Really great casting

This is really great. I'm 3 episodes in and just loving the ride so far. Gives Dexter early season vibes and the casting is really good. It's been a long time and I'm surprised how many people I recognize.

Young awkward Dexter is great and it's fun seeing him transform into season 1 Dexter. It actually takes off after the newest season of Dexter so if you haven't seen that, be prepared for immediate spoilers when you start this. They are advertising that this is actually leading to something called Dexter Resurrection which is coming out in the summer. Some people think Dexter needs to be allowed to die, but I'm loving this new journey and can't wait for more.

Can't wait for the next episode!

Well what can I say?

Having watched the first episode of this prequel to Dexter, I am absolutely blown away. Even though it's been a long while since the original, the show feels incredibly authentic. From the opening title sequence to the younger versions of the characters, their mannerisms and personalities are spot on. It's a faithful recreation of the original's essence and hopefully serves as a strong build-up to Dexter: Resurrections. Fans of the series are in for a treat!

If you're a film junkie like myself then you'll appreciate the time and effort that Clyde Phillips and everyone else put in to make this happen.

I enjoyed it. Not my place to say where it could have been improved. It is what it is.

Thank you.

Wow... just wow...

I just finished this entirety of this season and honestly feel more confident that this show is going to do just fine moving forward. I cannot stress how ridiculously good the casting is in this season. I'm literally blown away with how each cast member expresses their characterization of the OG Dexter. I do not believe I have ever watched a prequel or sequel with such parallel characterization in the cast before and I really do hope that they continue forward with further seasons. Clyde Phillips, you have a winner here and please continue with whatever you did this season. As we all know the OG Dexter kind of lost reputation towards the end of the running series, I just wanted to state that don't be repetitive too much in the storyline with this storyline again. These characters are way too likeable to be treated with such repetitiveness. It's okay to branch out to new things here as we watch this series progress.

Much better than expected

I was very leery as most modern remakes or prequel/sequels today are just sooo bad. I was presently surprised though. It started from the shows intro, they did a very good job of casting with the actor playing the young Dexter could pass as an actually son. Actually all of the characters are cast pretty well with the exception of the "Deb" character, she is pretty terrible. The actress they cast doesn't resemble her and can not deliver a line correctly. They wrote her dialog well, just the actress does not deliver it with the right attitude or timing. This is a minor distraction though as overall it's worth a couple more episode to see if they blow it or not.

As a hardcore Dexter fan, this is promising

I loved Dexter but hated the ending. They better should have make another season but a sequel (Dexter: New Blood), i think.

But this looks actually really promising.

Sure Michael C. Hall could not play the young Dexter, but his counterpart is a good choice as a young Dexter.

And the additional cast is great, and the acting is on point!

Sarah Michelle Gellar, Patrick Dempsey, Christian Slater, Christian Milian... i'm a fan of the cast!

As someone else already wrote, the setting and music instantly feels familiar. Miami is just a great place for such a storyline!

I'm looking forward to the next 9 Episodes.

Keep up the good work!

Right Back At It, But in the Beginning

It wouldn't be Dexter without the same characters we all began to miss at the end of the series, but they are back ... just younger. Even music and narrative voice over is the same from Michael C Hall. It feels like home.

With this fresh young cast, plus Harry Morgan played by Christian Slater, it will be fun to watch the series progress in a new and different environment. Atter one episode I stopped short of giving it higher than a 7, but if the writing continues to be top notch we will be in store for a fun ride. Dexter: New Blood just couldn't provide the same without the original characters of Debra Morgan and Vince Masuka. I wonder who else will come along?

And with the addition of Sarah Michelle Gellar I anticipate the show will build and add new and old aspects while these actors provide great performances. Looking forward to this series weekly in the next ten episodes!

No. It's not Dexter.

Dexter was a great show. It was done very well. We saw flashbacks of his younger life during the many season and they were way better than whatever this new Dexter Original Sin is trying to do. Original sin is trying to be like it but way worse. All the acting has been done; better before, the show was done better... so what's the point of this new Dexter.

Let's just get through this and get to the real Dexter next year. I've watched all the seasons and read the books. This Dexter is just not good. I don't understand where all the very high reviews are coming from. There is no way that fans of Dexter are loving Original Sin. Deb's character is so fake. You are not Deb!! Stop being Deb.

Dexter vibe !

After Dexter new blood that I really enjoyed I was some what skeptical. A sequel that takes place in the past, not a easy task to pull off. We already know who dies, and what happens with the characters. Positively surprised, it has the Dexter vibe and I don't understand how some people rate this low. Throughout good acting by well known actors. I think they succeeded in building a Miami in the 90's feel with the music and wardrobe.

I was initially skeptical to the lead actor playing Dexter since I didn't think he fit the role but he grew on me and I do think he was a good pick for this role. All things added up I really enjoy this show.

A Worthy Descent into the Past

Dexter: Original Sin takes a bold gamble, revisiting Dexter Morgan's formative years and offering a fresh perspective on his dark passenger. While some prequels stumble under the weight of established canon, Original Sin largely succeeds, enriching the Dexter mythology while delivering a compelling standalone story.

One of the series' greatest strengths is its casting. Patrick Gibson, though initially a questionable choice, grows into the role of young Dexter, capturing the character's signature blend of social awkwardness and chillingly calculated violence. Molly Brown shines as Deb, imbuing the younger version of the character with a fiery spirit and vulnerability that resonates deeply. The supporting cast, including Alex Shimizu as Masuka and James Martinez as Batista, also deliver strong performances, effectively capturing the essence of their original counterparts. Christian Slater, however, feels somewhat miscast as Harry, struggling to fully embody the character's internal conflicts.

The series cleverly weaves in familiar elements from the original Dexter, including iconic music cues and visual motifs, while also exploring new territory. The storyline involving Harry's deceased son adds a layer of complexity to Dexter's origin story, though it occasionally veers into melodramatic territory. The central mystery surrounding Dexter's present-day predicament in Iron Lake provides a compelling throughline, keeping the tension high throughout the season.

Original Sin isn't without its flaws. The pacing can be uneven, with some episodes feeling rushed while others drag. The over-reliance on licensed music occasionally clashes with the show's darker themes. And while the CGI is generally improved from the first episode, some scenes still suffer from noticeable visual effects issues.

Despite these shortcomings, Dexter: Original Sin is a worthwhile addition to the Dexter universe. It's a darkly entertaining exploration of Dexter's past, offering a fresh perspective on his transformation into the Bay Harbor Butcher. While it may not entirely satisfy all fans, particularly those disappointed by New Blood, Original Sin delivers enough compelling moments, strong performances, and intriguing twists to keep viewers engaged until the bloody end.

Get origin story telling

I wasn't sure what to expect going in but ended up being pleasantly surprised how much it felt like I was watching the old Dexter series. In the first series, Dexter would often recall a period from his past and in this latest series it's like going back to those scenes, but expanded. Another thing, as dark and sad as the original series was, it was full of dark humour as well. This latest series is even more so. I hope the whole series is as good as the first episode.

The acting is spot on. I almost lost it when I saw a young Bautista, HA! And oh my god, don't get me starter on Deb! And last, a great portrayal of a young Dexter.

Polished, good acting, weak story telling.

The actors are to be commended for capturing the personality traits, quirks and inflections of the older\original cast members. The younger actors playing Dexter, Masuka, Deborah, Angel, laGuerta, all did a very fine job capturing the essence of the original cast. Indeed I thought Deborah and laGuerta were actually better than the original cast members.

However I found Christian Slater to be the weak link in the cast. Everyone involved has obviously put in time and effort becoming these much loved characters and the biggest name actor in the show does a Sean Connery russian submarine commander performance, minimum effort.

Unfortunately, the writers and producers seem to have forgotten that Dexter's origin story was a major story arc of the original series. Not only is Original Sin pointless for fans of the original, adding nothing new to the origin story, it spoils a major component of the original for anyone coming to it after watching this.

I thought the writing and sub plots were, on reflection, pretty rubbish. It wasn't until I sat down to write a review that I realised this, the series does a good job of sweeping you along passively watching and not thinking:

-Consider the motive of the main story arc child abductor killer. There is no apparent or given reason or motive for the first child victim.

-The nurse, Dexter's first victim, was a good choice, a good story.

-The money lender, while a bad guy, probably didn't meet the code (which had already been established as a defining Dexter characteristic) as his crime was actually an accidental killing. It was also a stretch for a savvy operator like that to keep a gun used in a killing for many many years.

-The legal technicality device used to get the family killer off the charges so that Dexter could kill him was plain old lazy writing.

Nonetheless this is a polished production with good acting, good writing (but poor story telling) and that gloss makes it easy to disengage your brain and not realise you're being sold second hand goods as new. This perhaps explains the good reviews, people are letting the show wash over them rather than watching and paying attention.

This leaves me in two minds as to whether this should come back for a second season. The story is essentially caught up with the first season of the original. The only avenue open for a second season is the Gio character who is obviously a baddy yet his character does little for the story other than give an involved and unnecessary explanation for how Dexter got his boat. If it does come back for a season two then the writers absolutely must try harder. But do we even want a bunch of prequels to season 1 of Dexter with him doing everything he did in the original but slightly younger?

He's back

Of course I loved it. I've watched the original Dexter series, all seasons, I hate it admit, more than once. I watched New Blood, found it okay. Like many other fans I thought the Freudian ending was, well, lame. This prequel so far is much better in my opinion. Maybe it's the familiar characters, love that they're all back and the show isn't trailing far from what we'd expect in that regard. Right down to Deb's gutter mouth and Masuka's trade mark laugh. No I'm not revealing spoilers to say that. If you're even reading this review you've watched the trailers several times and had this date in your calendar. To me the show picked up as it went along. Looking forward to the rest of the episodes!

A Passable Parody

No idea how this is getting outstanding reviews from fans. I had no expectations out of this series but I thought it would just focus on Dexter being tutored by Harry. Instead we are given entire recasts of Dexter, Harry, Deb, Angel and Masuka and it's impossible for me to watch this show and not see how these actors are trying to impersonate the prior actor's performance. Patrick Gibson and Christian Slater are at least doing their own thing with their characters but those playing Deb, Angel and Masuka are almost unintentionally comical.

At this point the Dexter series has provided more bad than good and if this ends up being decent I'm not surprised long time fans will say it's great. But for fans who only thought season 1 and 4 of the original show were great, this is just kind of same old.

Dexter: Unoriginal franchising

Everything is there, just like the original show, except it all just feels a bit forced to me. This is definitely much better than New Blood which is not saying much in my opinion.

It's funny the word original is in the title because there is very little originality here, same characters, same story, same setting, same music, just with new actors. I also don't like that they brought back Baptista and Masuka, no actors could fill these shoes imo,

I don't feel the same weirdness and lack of feelings from this younger Dexter, he seems already better at faking feelings and social interactions than the old Dexter, I can't buy it.

There is a general cheesiness and subpar acting overall, especially the cops and the flashback segments with Harry. Even Christian Slater can't do much with what he's been given

I am thankful though as after 2 episodes, I just decided to rewatch the actual original which is amazing.

Amazing prequel

One of the best prequels I've ever seen great plot it ties in so perfectly to the original Dexter the actors all kind of matched and worked for the characters loved the young Dexter and especially the young Debra reminded me of their older selves played by Michael c hall and Jennifer carpenter . Loved the visuals and the camera work acting was great by all the actors involved and it was just as bloody and dexter should be , there was plot twist and the show was took off like a roller coaster when I got started similiar to Dexter definitely will be hoping for a season 2 of this . IF YOU HAVENT SEEN IT YET GO CHECK IT OUT.officially a 8.9 out of 10.
