The Inheritance sets up expectations but cleverly shifts gears from mystery to horror. The film takes unexpected turns, but suffers from weak character development and a flawed script. Despite the Victorian-era mansion's set design and cinematography creating a spooky atmosphere, the film's ambition isn't met with stellar execution.

The Inheritance (2024) follows the rich Abernathy family 75-year-old Charles Abernathy invites his family for a birthday celebration and, despite tensions between the Abernathy children, they comply. Once at the grandiose mansion that gives off creepy old money vibes, the grown kids are told there is actually something else they're there for, and that is their substantial inheritance. Someone or something is going to kill Charles tonight, and he puts his entire estate and wealth on the line. If anything happens to him, all of it will be donated.

Alejandro Brugués returns from “Horror Anthology Land” to direct his first solo feature since 2011’s hilarious zombie comedy Juan of the Dead in this year’s more straightforward-scary The Inheritance. Writing duo Chris Lamont and Joe Russo parallel recent releases like Mike Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher and Radio Silence’s Abigail, whether in greed-driven tones or lockdown confinement. The Inheritance was initially set to be a Netflix Original, but the streaming juggernaut dropped the completed product in early 2023, allowing producers to seek alternate distribution. It’s an odd move that presumes quality concerns, but I’ve seen far worse Netflix horror exclusives — more ambitious, but far less successful. There’s nothing awful about The Inheritance; it’s merely paint-by-numbers generational survival horror.

Season 3 of “Bridgerton” has officially joined the list of Netflix’s most popular titles of all time.

With a cumulative 91.9 million views since May 16 premiere, the season rank at No. 10 on the all time English-language TV chart, which Netflix measures based on views during each title’s first 91 days of streaming. This total was calculated on June 30, only 45 days after May 16, meaning the season can — and will — continue to climb higher.

Not only did “Bridgerton” Season 3 achieve all-time status quickly — it could have done so even quicker. Because the season was released in two segments, it wasn’t eligible for the Most Popular list until after June 13, when the final four episodes were released, at which point its viewership total was reset, as Netflix calculates views by dividing total stream time by runtime.
