Why Tom Hanks Refused to Appear on ‘Fantasy Island’
Image
Tom Hanks never wanted to take de plane on Fantasy Island. In an old interview with Oprah Winfrey, Hanks recalled how he learned to turn down acting gigs, revealing that he first declined an offer to appear on Fantasy Island between Bosom Buddies’ “two grand seasons.”

“I said, ‘You know, I’m not going to do Fantasy Island,’” Hanks recalled of rejecting a trip to the mysterious Atlantic Ocean locale. “They said, ‘What are you talking about? What are you doing instead?’”

A few years prior, he guest-starred on a 1979 episode of The Love Boat, and the role’s soft edges made him think twice about whether he wanted to...

Josh Greenstein Leaving Sony for Major Role at Paramount Once Skydance Merger Closes
Image
It’s all but official: Sony Motion Picture Group president Josh Greenstein will depart the studio for a top job under David Ellison once the $8 billion Paramount Global-Skydance merger closes, sources confirm.

The Hollywood Reporter was the first to report this spring that Greenstein would be part of the upper management team installed by Ellison at the newly configured conglomerate. It’s not clear exactly what his job will be, but it’s expected to extend beyond only Paramount Pictures. Hours after this story was published, Sony confirmed Greenstein’s exit, although without mentioning Paramount.

The FCC approved the deal on July 24, but it won’t officially close until August 7 or thereabouts. It’s not clear whether Ellison will wait until then to officially announce his roster of executives beyond what’s already known.

Skydance declined to comment regarding Greenstein.

Greenstein has a longstanding relationship with Skydance chief David...

Netflix Wins ‘The Borrowed Life Of Frederick Fife’; Micah Fitzerman-Blue & Noah Harpster To Adapt
Image
Exclusive: Netflix has optioned The Borrowed Life of Frederick Fife, with Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster set to adapt the debut novel by Anna Johnston. The scribes brought the book to Netflix and will produce through their Blue Harp banner.

Frederick Fife was born with an extra helping of kindness in his heart. If he borrowed your car, he’d return it washed with a full tank of gas. The problem is there’s nobody left in Fred’s life to borrow from. At 82, he’s desperately lonely, broke, and on the brink of homelessness. But Fred’s luck changes when, in a bizarre case of mistaken identity, he takes the place of grumpy Bernard Greer at the local nursing home.

The Fate of 'Invincible' Has Already Been Decided Ahead of Season 4
Image
Although Invinciblefans are still waiting for a release date for Season 4 and recovering from the insane ending to Season 3, the series has gotten a big, if somewhat expected, update. Prime Video announced that Robert Kirkman's bloody superhero story is officially coming back for Season 5, bringing the creator one step closer to an eight-season adaptation of his original comic book. Alongside the renewal came a fun behind-the-scenes video showing the cast, led by Steven Yeun, back in the booth and having a blast while recording. It also confirms that all the voice work is already done, teeing up another relatively quick return after Season 4 closes.

"Season f—ing five. You know what that's called? A success," Walton Gogginsopens the video with, touting the universal acclaim Invincible has had so far. It's rare that a streaming series, let alone an animated one, reaches five seasons nowadays, but the story of Mark Grayson...

‘The President’s Cake’ Review: First-Time Iraqi Director Hasan Hadi Delivers One Of The Fest’s Genuine Gems – Cannes Film Festival
Image
Perhaps the most surprising thing about today’s world premiere of The President’s Cake in the Directors’ Fortnight section of the Cannes Film Festival is that it isn’t in the main Competition at the Grand Lumiere. It is head and shoulders above some of those films I have seen there, but no matter how you find it, this is a true gem and a real discovery from Hasan Hadi. With the right distributor, it could turn out to be Iraq’s first nominee for an Oscar. Yes, it is that good, and coming from a country that barely has movie theaters or any history of cinema, that is saying a lot. This is the first major film from Iraq ever to play in Cannes.

Set in 1990s Iraq as dictator Saddam Hussein ruled the land, this is a slice of life actually shot in the country and a...

Image Source: Sony Pictures Tom Hanks, a two-time Academy Award winner, has been on the silver screen in many beloved and classic movies that continue to connect with audiences today throughout his distinguished career. From the cheerful charm of Big and the ageless wisdom of Forrest Gump to the inspiring spirit of A League of Their Own, his filmography is packed with cherished classics. Among these acclaimed works, however, is a gem of subtle genius: the 2019 biodrama, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. This powerful movie examines the transforming encounter between the strongly sympathetic television star Fred Rogers and a jaded journalist as the writer sets out on a profile that blossoms into an unexpected and significant friendship. Hanks portrays the legendary Fred Rogers, the kind-hearted host of the always beloved children’s show, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, in this film. On-screen, Rogers warm and real presence reflected his true nature off-camera.

Tim Allen Shares a Nostalgic ‘Toy Story’ Exchange With Tom Hanks in New Images
Image
Shifting Gears star Tim Allen has shared a delightful exchange between him and his Toy Story co-star, Tom Hanks, on social media. Allen and Hanks first teamed up 30 years ago for Toy Story (1995), the animated adventure film that was not only nominated for three Oscars, but also grossed over $390 million at the global box office against a $30 million budget. The two have since worked together on every Toy Story movie, even as recently as Toy Story 4 in 2019, which grossed over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Allen posted two photos on his personal X account, one Hanks sent him of him standing behind the Volkswagen I.D. Buzz, and another that he replied to his co-star, recreating his picture.

While their roles in the Toy Story franchise remain some of the most important in both of their careers, Tim Allen and Tom Hanks have both gone on to accomplish great things as actors.

Image
Matthew Rhys has signed on for a leading role in the upcoming Apple TV+ series “Widow’s Bay,” Variety has learned.

He recently shot the Netflix limited series “The Beast in Me” opposite Claire Danes, while it was reported in November that Rhys will star opposite John Krasinski in the Amazon Prime Video serial killer drama “Silent River.” He also recently wrapped shooting on the BritBox and BBC1 series adaptation of Agatha Christie’s “Towards Zero.”

Image
Amy Adams' new horror-comedy with a 59% Rotten Tomatoes score has become a streaming success. After beginning her career in Hollywood with small roles in films and television shows, Adams' breakthrough came with her performance in 2005's Junebug, which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. However, it was her portrayal of the spirited Giselle in Disney's Enchanted that showcased her versatility and charm, cementing her status as a leading lady.

With her ability to embody a wide range of characters, Adams continued to garner critical acclaim with her nuanced performances in films like Doubt, The Fighter, The Master, American Hustle, and Vice – all of which earned her additional Oscar nods. Tom Hanks' 93% Rotten Tomatoes Biopic Is Sailing Onto Prime Video Now
Image
For all the love his fictional characters have received, Tom Hanks has spent much of his career playing real American heroes, whether it be the courageous Captain Sully Sullenberger in Sully or the ray of sunshine that was Fred Rodgers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. As 2025 gets underway, one of his acclaimed features that falls into this category has just arrived on Prime Video - Captain Phillips. The Oscar-nominated 2013 biopic places Hanks in the shoes of Richard Phillips, the captain of the Maersk Alabama container ship who, on one unexpected day in 2009, was confronted with the threat of Somali pirates. It takes inspiration from Phillips's novel recounting the incident with Stephan Talty, A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea, with director Paul Greengrass bringing the story to life.

Amy Adams, Jessica Harper, Kerry O'Malley, Scoot McNairy, Ella Thomas, Zoë Chao, and Mary Holland in Nightbitch (2024)
Nightbitch (2024) Movie Review: Compelling Amy Adams Performance Is Overshadowed By Underdeveloped Black Comedy
Amy Adams, Jessica Harper, Kerry O'Malley, Scoot McNairy, Ella Thomas, Zoë Chao, and Mary Holland in Nightbitch (2024)
“Nightbitch” is a very compelling dark comedy about the challenges that are inherent to child-rearing, but it is unfortunately saddled with a ridiculous metaphor at its center that drags the pacing to a halt. There may have been a way to spin “Nighbitch” into a more absurdist romp that embraced visceral horror, and it also may have succeeded had it leaned entirely into the drama with an approach that felt more authentic. Unfortunately, “Nighbitch” feels lost somewhere in the middle, leading to a rather unpleasant slog that lacks cohesiveness. While it would be hard to fault the ambition behind its concept, “Nighbitch” is not nearly as shocking, devastating, or funny as it is clearly aiming to be.

Based on the novel of the same name by Rachel Yoder, “Nighbitch” centers on an unnamed mother (Amy Adams) who finds it harder to raise her son (played by twin child actors Arleigh...

'Nightbitch' Review - Amy Adams Gives One of Her Most Daring and Strangest Performances
Image
Let’s get this out of the way right at the top: Nightbitch is not a film about Amy Adams turning into a dog. Well, she does, in fact, turn into a dog some nights, in the latest film from Can You Ever Forgive Me? and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood writer-director Marielle Heller, and her evolution does involve growing hair in strange places, a newly discovered keen sense of smell, and running in packs with other dogs. But, unlike that odd first trailer that left the internet divided seemed to imply, Nightbitch isn’t about a six-time Oscar nominee becoming a dog. Instead, Nightbitch is about the powerful and transformative nature of motherhood and the desire to not lose one’s self after starting a family, shown through one of the wildest, most ambitious performances by Adams, who yes, sometimes turns into a dog.

The Big Score Reveals The Secrets Of Nate Heller’s Nightbitch Music
Image
Hollywood Records’ The Big Score series continues to pull back the curtain on the world of film scoring with a new episode about Nightbitch. Based on the 2021 novel of the same name by Rachel Yoder, Nightbitch is a dark comedy that tells the story of a stay-at-home mom who finds herself turning into a dog as she faces the pressures and demands of motherhood. The movie stars Amy Adams as Mother and features a cast including Scoot McNairy as Husband, Arleigh and Emmett Snowden as Son, and Zoë Chao as Jen.

ScreenRant is happy to offer a first look at the latest episode of the The Big Score, diving into the musical process of Nightbitch composer Nate Heller. Heller is the brother of Nightbitch director Marielle Heller, and the pair have collaborated on a number of projects in the past, including 2019’s Mr. Rogers biopic A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.

Nightbitch director Marielle Heller on Amy Adams’s relationship with her canine co-stars, and how the film is autobiographical
Image
Amy Adams gives one of the best performances of her career in Marielle Heller’s Nightbitch, which is set to make its debut on Hulu just after Christmas. In it she plays a new mother who finds herself increasingly alienated from her loving partner (Scoot McNairy) and former as she becomes all consumed by her new parental role, which eventually has her thinking that she might be turning into a dog. While early reports seemed to suggest this was going to be some kind of horror flick, it’s actually a gentle comedy about motherhood and one that will resonate with both mothers and their spouses.

A little while ago, I had the chance to speak to the movie’s director, Marielle Heller. Nightbitch marks her fourth film, following the well-received The Diary of a Teenage Girl, Can You Ever Forgive Me, and the Mister Rogers biopic, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.

‘Nightbitch’ director Marielle Heller is taking on ‘mom culture’ and saying things parents ‘aren’t really supposed to’
Image
Marielle Heller has something to say about “mom culture” in her new film, Nightbitch. The writer-director is finished with the facade of perfect parenting and has decided it’s time to start saying things we “aren’t really supposed to.”

“When I became a parent, I felt like nobody was really honest about saying, ‘But some days you regret it,’ or, ‘Some days you feel like you’re not sure if you made a huge mistake,'” Heller tells Gold Derby. “You’re not supposed to admit how hard it is. You’re not supposed to admit how much of the time you feel like you don’t know what you’re doing or how much of the time you feel like everyone else has it together.” Watch the full video interview above.

"This Movie Is Like an Antidote to Instagram Culture:" 'Nightbitch' Director Marielle Heller on the Messiness of Motherhood

In 2021, author Rachel Yoder published her acclaimed novel Nightbitch. Yoder was lauded by audiences and critics alike, with papers such as the Washington Post praising her “powerful understanding of the alienation that can set in for stay-at-home mothers and others.” Now, her book has been adapted into a feature film directed by Marielle Heller. Known for character-driven pieces like Can You Ever Forgive Me? with Melissa McCarthy and A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood, starring Tom Hanks as the seminal and beloved Mr. Rogers. Now, she brings her grounded sensibility into the world of horror-comedy and magical realism with the feature adaptation of Yoder's novel.

"It's Frustrating Because You Never Feel Like You Meet All of the Expectations": Amy Adams Opens Up About the Pressures of Society for 'Nightbitch'
Image
Amy Adams has been top-billed in some of our favorite movies for decades. After making a name for herself as a multi-faceted supportive character actor in films like The Fighter, Doubt, and even Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, she's maintained her depth of craft and variety of character work, leading massive hits such as Enchanted, Arrival, and Hillbilly Elegy — and in the process was nominated an astounding six times for the Academy Award. Now, she takes the lead once more in Marielle Heller's (A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood) wild new horror-comedy Nightbitch.

Nightbitch Review: Amy Adams Elevates An Otherwise Underwritten Script
Image
Inarguably one of the most talented, hard-working, and almost as importantly, most popular performers of her generation, Amy Adams, has yet to win an Academy Award. As her six (and counting) Oscar nods attest, however, it's not for lack of trying or recognition from her peers. Despite that recognition, her range, depth, and charm have yet to find the perfect role to elevate her from longtime nominee to winner in either the Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress categories. Her latest role finds her in Marielle Heller's defanged adaptation of Rachel Yoder's well-received dark-fantasy novel, Nightbitch. Adams persuasively plays the unnamed title character, identified only as "Mother" in...

Nightbitch Review
Amy Adams, Jessica Harper, Kerry O'Malley, Scoot McNairy, Ella Thomas, Zoë Chao, and Mary Holland in Nightbitch (2024)
Nightbitch, by acclaimed writer-director Marielle Heller is one of those films that will spark plenty of conversation. It’s a daring, sometimes messy take on motherhood, that blends surreal humour, body horror, and sharp social commentary.

At its core is Amy Adams, giving a courageous performance as a stay-at-home mum on the verge of something extraordinary—possibly a breakdown, perhaps transformation, or maybe both. Exhausted by the endless grind of raising a toddler, she starts to notice unsettling changes in her physical being. Her senses sharpen, her teeth feel different, and she starts to wonder if she’s turning into a dog.

Heller approaches this bizarre premise with her usual focus on the emotional undercurrents. She captures the relentless exhaustion of motherhood and the way it can strip away a sense of self. Adams embodies this perfectly – whether she’s stumbling through her day with unwashed hair and dead eyes...

Nighbitch Review: Amy Adams Turns Into A Dog In This Toothless Satire Of Motherhood
Image
"Nightbitch" has a lot going for it, at least in theory. For one thing, the film hails from director Marielle Heller, the filmmaker behind wonderful movies like "The Diary of a Teenage Girl," "Can You Ever Forgive Me?" (my personal favorite of her films so far), and "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood." On top of that, it stars Amy Adams, one of the best performers working today — an actor able to portray both a bubbly Disney princess in "Enchanted" and a solemn, haunted linguist in "Arrival". Then you have the fact that the movie is called "Nightbitch." What a wonderful title! Throw in some genuine female body horror, and you've got yourself a stew, baby!

Sadly, all of these promising details crumble to dust once you sit down and watch the film, which is clumsy, awkward, and saddled with some of the worst voice over narration in recent memory.

Nightbitch review | All bark, very little bite
Image
Amy Adams is slowly but surely turning into a dog in Marielle Heller’s new movie. Here’s our Nightbitch review.

Some of 2024’s best horror films have focused on the horrendous assault on the female body that pregnancy can be. Both Immaculate and The First Omen deal with women’s bodily autonomy and show the sheer pain of childbirth while The Substance finds Demi Moore excruciatingly giving birth to a “better” version of herself from her actual backbone.

Nightbitch, Marielle Heller’s A Beautiful Day In The Neighbourhood follow-up, takes things a little further. If you thought childbirth was hard, try being a full-time mother. The film, adapted from Rachel Yoder’s 2021 novel, suggests that being a mother essentially means giving up your entire identity in order to devote your whole life to the little critters that you push out of yourself, rather painfully.

Here, Mother (Amy Adams) starts...

Nightbitch
Image
There are plenty of famous movie mums. But the actual experience of motherhood — the brutal daily monotony, the blood-sweat-and-milk toil that goes into keeping a tiny human alive — remains a bit of a cinematic rarity. Nightbitch is an effort to redress the balance, in uncompromising fashion: it’s a funny and freaky and appropriately messy film that’s part broad outlandish comedy, part toe-curling body-horror, part feminist treatise.

Adapted from the 2021 magical-realist novel by Rachel Yoder, it sees Amy Adams play the never-named mother, shuffling through life with her infant son while wearing a thousand-yard stare and clothes that haven’t been washed in weeks. She is barely keeping it together. Then she starts to notice odd changes to her body: stray hairs, sharper teeth, a keener sense of smell. Is she turning into a dog? Going through perimenopause? Or is she just missing out on a decent night’s kip?...

12 Overlooked Tom Hanks Movies Worth Watching
Image
Just taking Tom Hanks’ name feels like you’re talking about an old friend. He’s the quintessential nice guy, a Hollywood heavyweight. Everyone loves a classic like Forrest Gump or Saving Private Ryan, but there’s a treasure chest of gems in his filmography that don’t get nearly enough love.

Tom Hanks in Joe Versus the Volcano | Warner Bros.

This list won’t be about the obvious heavy hitters. Instead, we’re taking a closer look at the movies that flew under the radar or have faded into the background over the years.

12. Larry Crowne (2011)

Let’s start with a feel-good flick that’s just as unassuming as its leading man. In Larry Crowne, Tom Hanks, who also directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding), stars as Larry, a perpetually cheerful retail worker fired for not having a college degree. So, naturally,...

Marielle Heller Found the Perfect Dog to Play Amy Adams in 'Nightbitch'
Image
Nightbitch, the forthcoming film from writer-director (and occasional actress) Marielle Heller, stars Amy Adams as a suburban mom who due to the pressures of motherhood believes she is turning into a dog. This meant that Heller had to find just the right canine performer to act as Adams's dog double. The search, as it turns out, was a long and tireless one, according to Vulture.

At the November 21 Los Angeles premiere of Nightbitch, Heller explained that she, "spent a long time just looking at pictures of Amy and pictures of dogs" to find the perfect match. She eventually landed on a red husky because of the ginger in its fur, which matched Adams's hair.

It Takes A Particular Kind Of Dog To Be A Good 'Nightbitch'

Finding a pooch of this particular breed that could also act on-camera proved far more difficult than Heller initially anticipated. "They were like,...

‘Here’ Misfires With $5M; Robert Zemeckis Says “Theatrical Movie Business Is In A Stressful Situation Right Now”: What Happened With ‘Forrest Gump’ Reteam At B.O.
Image
Robert Zemeckis has always been about a great technological or storytelling conceit in his movies whether it’s the live-action animated hybrid of the 3x Oscar winning Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, the insertion of Tom Hanks in famed historical footage in Oscar Best Picture Forrest Gump or the motion capture of The Polar Express.

However, his latest movie, the $50M Miramax financed and Sony released Here, which brings back together the Gump gang of Tom Hanks, Robin Wright and scribe Eric Roth, was a situation of technology outshining the story. Critics deep sixed the multi-generation family drama which takes place in one location throughout time at a fixed angle with 36% Rotten while audiences weren’t any better with a B- CinemaScore, 57% Rt audience score and 69% positive on PostTrak.

It’s no wonder that the movie opened to $5M, and it’s unfortunate box office streak for the once blockbuster mass-appealing Back to the Future,...

'Thank God We Never Bothered': Tom Hanks Is Happy 1 Oscar-Winning Film Never Had a Sequel
Image
After three decades, Forrest Gump remains one of Tom Hanks' most revered films. Given its immense success, it wouldn't have been hard to have a sequel made if Hanks was interested, but the actor is grateful he never went back down that road.

Per The New York Times, Hanks commented on how Forrest Gump is a film that stands on its own, making it unnecessary for there to ever be a sequel. As the actor explained, "It is this extraordinary amalgam that stands completely on its own and never has to be repeated. And thank God we never bothered trying to make another one. Why put a hat on a hat?

First Weekend Of November Belongs To Sony With ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ & ‘Here’ – Box Office Preview
Image
Sony will own the first weekend of November at the box office, with the second frame of the Culver City lot’s Venom: The Last Dance down around 60%, or $20 million, for No. 1, followed by the studio’s release of Miramax’s adult drama Here.

Here, which reps the Forrest Gump reteam of filmmaker Robert Zemeckis, scribe Eric Roth and stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, is expected to do around $7M with an eye on hopefully pulling older adults out again this weekend after they made a date for Focus Features’ Conclave last weekend ($6.6M opening).

It remains to be seen whether Here slots in second place, giving Sony the frame’s 1-2 punch.

The question is whether audiences will go along with watching a generations drama story about various families on the same property/house at a skewed-degree angle. Hanks and Wright are technologically de-aged to their former 1980s/1990s selves,...

1 of the Best Revolutionary War Films of All Time Streams for Free in November
Image
While The Patriot, released in 2000, might be pushing a quarter-of-a-century old, it is still arguably one of the greatest films to take place during the Revolutionary War Era. The Roland Emmerich-directed epic starring Mel Gibson will be available to stream for free on Tubi, beginning November 1, 2024.

While known for sci-fi blockbuster movies like Independence Day, Stargate, and Independence Day: Resurgence, Emmerichs The Patriot delves into the lives of the Martin Family in 1776. The family is led by patriarch and former soldier Benjamin Martin, played by Gibson, who struggles when his son, Gabriel, played by the late Heath Ledger, decides to enlist in the military during the Revolutionary War.

The Patriot also stars Joley Richardson, Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets), Chris Cooper (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood), Tom Wilkinson (The Full Monty), Adam Baldwin (Chuck) and Donal Logue (Gotham).

‘Dune’ Producer Mary Parent Says the Industry Has Gotten Worse for Female Producers: ‘It’s Harder to Get In’ | Video
Image
“Dune: Part Two” producer Mary Parent said that despite her own success working on big-budget productions, it’s “harder to get in” now than it was when she started her career decades ago.

“It’s harder to get in. The paths that used to exist don’t. I think that’s really impacted everything,” Parent said at TheWrap’s annual Grill conference on Tuesday, observing that the field has been dominated historically by men, especially on “big films.”

“Those were the films I wanted to make,” Parent said.

The lack of progress for female producers in the business was raised by former New York Times journalist Laura Holson who moderated the panel which included Lucy Fisher, the producer of “Gladiator II” opens next month, and veteran executive and producer Sue Naegle, who produced this awards season contender “Nightbitch.” Holson cited data reflecting that between 1998 and 2023, the number of female producers...

Nosferatu Shot-For-Shot Remake Star Addresses Close Release With Robert Eggers' 2024 Movie
Image
With the property becoming the most popular it's been in over 20 years, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror's Doug Jones shares his thoughts on the close release between it and Robert Eggers' upcoming remake. Both movies serve as different interpretations of Henrik Galeen and F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent film of the same name, itself an unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula. Where Eggers' Nosferatu is a somewhat reimagined version of the original film in the filmmaker's unique style, A Symphony of Horror is a shot-for-shot remake utilizing practical sets and CGI to put Jones and the rest of his cast in the original film.

During an interview with Screen Rant to promote the October 18 release of his version, Jones shared his thoughts on Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror and Eggers' movie releasing within two months of each other. The star, who plays Count Orlok in the shot-for-shot remake and...

Oscars Best Director field could be all-male for the second time in three years
Image
Back in 2018, while presenting Best Director alongside Ron Howard at the Golden Globe Awards, Natalie Portman created a meme: “And here are the all-male nominees,” Portman said, pointedly underlining the omission of presumed contenders like Greta Gerwig for “Lady Bird” and Patty Jenkins for “Wonder Woman.”

Speaking a month after the ceremony, Portman said she wanted to bring attention to the disparity in the directors’ field without throwing the male nominees under the bus. “It’s not their fault, and they all made great work. You don’t want to not recognize them,” she said to BuzzFeed. “It’s just, why aren’t we recognizing the people who aren’t part of this exclusive club?”

But, Portman added, her goal was to make clear the obvious. “We have to make it weird for people to walk in a room where everyone’s not in the room,” she said. “If you...

Nightbitch Is About ‘A Deep Animalistic Rage’ Being Unleashed, Says Director Marielle Heller
Image
It sounds like a joke: a movie in which Amy Adams turns into a dog. (Or does she?) And in some ways it is – Nightbitch, with that provocative title, isn’t shying away from its satirical take on motherhood, and the physical and psychological changes that come with it. But there’s a power and potency to that story too – one which director Marielle Heller (previously behind Can You Ever Forgive Me? and A Beautiful Day In The Neighbourhood) hopes to extract in adapting Rachel Yoder’s novel of the same name.

“There was something so cathartic about being able to admit that there is a deep animalistic rage within us,” Heller tells Empire. “Societally, or in our own lives, we’ve just figured out a way to bury it.” In the film, Adams’ unnamed ‘Mother’ grapples with new motherhood, and finds herself undergoing a canine transformation. “For me, the...

TriStar Sets Biopic of Pioneering Fashion Designer Ann Lowe with Serena Williams, Ruth Carter (Exclusive)
Image
Ann Lowe — the pioneering fashion designer and American couturier — is getting the biopic treatment at TriStar thanks to Serena Williams and Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth Carter.

Sony’s TriStar Pictures acquired the pitch for the project, titled The Dress, about Lowe, one of the country’s most prolific but also least-known couturiers. Lowe, who died in 1981, designed mid-century wardrobes for the biggest names in American society and industry, including members of the Rockefeller, Roosevelt, Du Pont and Whitney families.

The story will focus on how Lowe, who was the first Black woman to own a shop on Madison Avenue, was commissioned to design the wedding dress that Jackie Bouvier wore at her 1953 wedding to John F. Kennedy.

Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster, the writers behind the Mister Rogers movie A Beautiful Day in The Neighborhood, will pen the screenplay based on the book By Her Own Design by Piper Huguley.

Amy Adams & Nightbitch Team Address The Horror And Comedy Of Motherhood
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

Nightbitch made waves with its 2024 Toronto International Film Festival premiere, a horror-comedy about a mother feeling harried by the pressures and double standards for women in modern society and possibly feeling hairy because she's turning into a dog. Star and producer Amy Adams is no stranger to award-worthy work, having received nearly universal critical acclaim with movies such as The Fighter, The Master, American Hustle, and Arrival. She is also an actor with her finger on the pulse of pop culture, a power she's tapped into time and time again in projects like Enchanted and Man of Steel.

It should come as no surprise, then, that Nightbitch offers a fascinating mix of both. Based on Rachel Yoder's novel of the same name, the movie is written and directed by Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood), extrapolating on the supernatural...

Nightbitch TIFF Review — Amy Adams Gives a Strong Performance in Otherwise Grating Film
Image
Marielle Heller made a splash in Hollywood with her one-two punch of Can You Ever Forgive Me? and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, but her latest project is a lot more disagreeable than that. Somehow both a massive swing and far too safe for its premise, Nightbitch is a massive disappointment, squandering a strong Amy Adams performance on a narrative that fails to keep viewers interested.

Nightbitch Review

Based on the novel by Rachel Yoder, Nightbitch follows a stay-at-home mom who spends day after day caring for her rambunctious toddler as she discovers that she — quite literally — may be turning into a dog. While this type of high-concept satire should be provocative, Heller’s film lacks the bite to truly connect.

Heller makes her themes abundantly clear from the first scenes of the movie. Motherhood is grueling and often painful — both literally and metaphorically. Of course, it’s not...

‘Nightbitch’ Review – Dark Comedic Fairy Tale is Too Scared of Its Feral Setup [TIFF]
Image
Writer/Director Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood) refuses to color within the genre lines in her feature adaptation of Rachel Yoder‘s novel, Nightbitch. Heller employs everything from poignant family drama to pitch black comedy to horror fairy tale to highlight the complexities of motherhood and identity. It’s so defiant of easy categorization and tone that marketing has their work cut out for them, which is to say that Nightbitch isn’t quite what the trailer suggests. It is indeed messy, but the earnest cultural conversations on maternity and a capable lead performance transcend Nightbitch‘s wackier impulses.

Nightbitch introduces Amy Adams, credited solely as Mother, well into her role as an exhausted stay-at-home mom. Mother daydreams about acerbically expelling her darkest inner thoughts to a former coworker she bumps into at the grocery store, a familiar scene capturing the exhausting nature of parenthood. Not helping...

Marielle Heller’s ‘Nightbitch’ Formula: Amy Adams, the ‘Most Beautiful Dog in the World,’ Weird Al, and Men Actually Apologizing
Image
Who hasn’t wanted to turn into a snarling, free-wheeling beast when the pressures of domestic life — hell, of life in general — get too much? Women have transformed into beasts throughout mythological history, but that wasn’t always a matter of choice. In Rachel Yoder’s bestselling 2021 novel, “Nightbitch,” that line is a bit fuzzier. Does our heroine become a dog because she wants to or because she has to?

That’s just one of the questions at the heart of filmmaker Marielle Heller’s latest film, which adapts Yoder’s story to the big screen. Like her breakout hit “The Diary of a Teenage Girl,” her fact-based grifter tale “Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” and her deep-feeling Mr. Rogers-centric feature “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” Heller’s latest explores the different facets of being a very real person in a very tough world. Sometimes that includes turning into a dog.

Nightbitch review – Amy Adams turns into a dog in rough dark comedy
Amy Adams
Toronto film festival: the multiple Oscar nominee has some fun as a mother at the end of her tether but this unsubtle mix of comedy and horror doesn’t go far enough

While memories of the film itself might fade all too fast, it’ll probably take a while to tire of repeating the phrase “Amy Adams is Nightbitch”. The six-time Oscar nominee, stuck on a limp, losing streak of late with anonymous try-hard misfires like Hillbilly Elegy and Dear Evan Hansen, has taken on a goofy, lightly gory role in a film with one of the silliest, most attention-securing titles of the traditionally self-serious Oscar season. If only it was as daring or as mischievous as its name and logline: malcontent suburban mother turns into dog. But the film is all bark and no bite, a shame for its lead – but moreso for its as yet infallible writer-director.

‘Nightbitch’ Review: Motherhood Gets a Brilliant Amy Adams Barking Mad in a Satire That Promises Ferociousness but Pulls Too Many Punches
Image
When you have a title with the blunt-force impact of Nightbitch and a premise as seemingly outrageous as a woman who responds to the isolation, alienation and self-sacrifice of motherhood by turning canine, you don’t want a movie that holds back. But Marielle Heller’s adaptation of the 2021 Rachel Yoder novel, while it starts out promisingly with sharp humor and tantalizing jabs of incipient weirdness, doesn’t take its ideas far enough to be seriously provocative. That’s too bad for Amy Adams, who runs with everything the story throws at her but gets shortchanged by the script.

It’s hardly a radical revelation at this point that not every housewife and mother is June Cleaver, no matter what regressive world J.D. Vance wants to live in. But it’s disappointing that a book greeted as a feminist fairy tale, which dared to say out loud some dark truths...

Amy Adams’ Film ‘Nightbitch’ Explores Surreal Portrayal of Motherhood

Amy Adams’ newest film “Nightbitch” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday. The movie tells the strange story of a mother who believes she may be transforming into a dog. Director Marielle Heller based the movie on Rachel Yoder’s 2021 novel of the same name.

Adams plays an unnamed mother who pauses her artistic career to take care of her young son. Two years into motherhood, she starts experiencing a bizarre change in her body. The film implies she could be turning into a dog, an idea that made some audience members laugh while making others feel uncomfortable.

During a question and answer session after the film, Adams talked about its central themes. She said motherhood can be an isolating experience even though it’s something many people share. Adams was happy to help tell a story about this important transition and open it up for discussion.

Toronto: Actress-Centric ‘The Room Next Door’ and ‘Nightbitch’ Premiere, Face Different Awards Paths
Image
Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door and Marielle Heller’s Nightbitch, the two most highly-anticipated films that screened at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday night, are in some ways very similar: both are adaptations of novels by filmmakers who have been bringing quality films to TIFF for years, and both center on complex female protagonists played by first-rate actresses. But their receptions at the fest, and their awards prospects moving forward, couldn’t be more different.

The Room Next Door, which is Spaniard Almodóvar’s English-language feature directorial debut, came to Toronto via the Venice Film Festival, and was unveiled here just hours after the Venice jury bestowed upon the film its highest honor, the Golden Lion — which is somehow the first top prize from a major film festival that the 74-year-old auteur has ever been awarded.
