Buried beneath layers of lackluster animation and stilted storytelling lie the seeds of something greater. Garouden: The Way of the Lone Wolf boasts an enticing premise and a foundation in real martial arts disciplines that could have resonated strongly with combat fans. Yet its potential goes mostly unfulfilled over the course of its brief first season.
We’re introduced to Juzo Fujimaki, a master of Takemiya-ryu on the run from his past. Fleeing assassination attempts while using his skills to help others in need, Juzo finds himself coerced into an underground martial arts tournament called Kodoku. With a hefty bounty on his head and a determined detective closing in, the stakes are high. Meanwhile, we learn bits and pieces of Juzo’s troubled history and motives for his actions.
Everything seems in place for an exciting deep dive into Japan’s revered martial arts traditions and a compelling character-driven drama.

Netflix's short anime episodes hinder the storytelling potential and reputation of its originals in the industry. The trend of limited episodes in Netflix's anime releases can result in rushed endings and under-developed plot points. To improve its anime offerings, Netflix must prioritize quality over quantity, focusing on creating shows worth watching and remembering.
While Netflix has been actively acquiring and bankrolling anime, its tendency to release these "originals" with limited episodes ruins their potential and reputation. When the streaming service releases anime that are expected to be watched and finished in a few short hours, the impression it gives is that these shows are inconsequential filler. While this is not universal, it does beg the question of how Netflix perceives the anime industry.
Many of Netflix's new originals are broadcast with limited episodes. If a "short" anime in Japan usually consists of 12-13 episodes, Netflix's originals have run between 10 and a meager four.

Garouden's impressive fight scenes are marred by a messy story that fails to leave a lasting impression. Multiple plotlines dilute the impact of the series, despite excellent combat animation and engaging fights. The show's limited episodes result in a lack of proper build-up or resolution, making it more of a whimsy than a memorable experience.
Martial arts anime Garouden: The Way of the Lone Wolf, streaming on Netflix, puts out impressive fight scenes, but is hampered by its messy story that inelegantly shuttles its anti-hero about in its constrained eight episodes. If Netflix wanted an anime that viewers can binge in a day, it succeeded; but if it wanted a competitor to stand up to other anime heavyweights, it should have offered the series room to breathe and leave an impression.
There is an arc of progression, with wanted fugitive Juzo Fujimaki diving into a blood sport in search of legal and mental absolution,...

Netflix is inarguably the best at adapting manga, and now they’ve come up with one of the most adrenaline-filled animes I’ve watched in a long time. Based on Baku Yumemakura’s series of martial arts novels, Garouden: The Way of the Lone Wolf is guaranteed to enthrall the audience to watch the series on Netflix. Juzo Fujimaki, a martial artist who’s been a wanted fugitive for years, is forced to gear up and fight again when unavoidable circumstances and his own past catch up to him.

Why does Fujimaki not want to fight anymore?
Fujimaki is first introduced when two hikers come across an injured brown bear who’s growling in pain and wants to kill them. Fujimaki fights the bear with his bare hands and manages to kill him. A detective named Tamon wants to get to Fujimaki, but Fujimaki being a criminal is...

Yuto Suzuki’s Sakamoto Days is one manga fans have been following for a long time now. There are many different shonen works that take on the slice-of-life tropes on the side. Spy x Family, The Way of the Househusband, and many other anime and manga follow such patterns to add a mix of different genres in an otherwise already explored trope.
Sakamoto Days
Sakamoto Days does the same. It takes a retired hitman wanting to live a normal life and pulls him back into a world filled with action. Needless to say, there were many fans following the manga and more who were awaiting a possible anime adaptation. By the looks of it, the wait may not be for long. However, that is not to say that everything might be going smoothly.

Garouden: The Way of the Lone Wolf on Netflix promises epic martial arts action with a fresh and realistic take on challenge matches. Netflix's success with martial arts anime like Baki shows its growing ability to find great content for anime fans worldwide. The rich universe of Garouden, with nearly 40 years of content, offers endless potential for engaging, action-packed stories on Netflix.
With the debut in May 2024 of Garouden: The Way of the Lone Wolf, Netflix continues its impressive expansion into the anime space with an epic story of bare-knuckled, no-holds-barred martial arts. Indeed, the show promises to be everything a fan of martial arts and combat sports anime could ever hope for. However, outside its entertainment value as a series, Garouden is also a gateway to a wider universe of "strongest man" tales that present a more realistic depiction of the brutally violent world of challenge matches and back...
