Busy Producer Mark Johnson Builds the Anne Rice TV Universe for AMC Networks: ‘He’s Indefatigable’
Image
Mark Johnson has produced some of the most distinctive movies and TV shows of the past 40 years. Think “Good Morning, Vietnam,” “Rain Man,” “The Notebook,” “The Holdovers,” “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul.”

Yet Johnson was a surprise choice by AMC Networks to lead its massive investment in building out the Anne Rice literary universe in multiple TV series. AMC bought the TV rights to Rice’s literary vault of Southern Gothic vampire tales in 2020.

Four years later, AMC has two successful Rice-based series on the air — “Interview With the Vampire” and “Mayfair Witches” — and a third hot prospect in development: “Talamasca,” which explores a mysterious society within the Rice universe. Johnson had little experience with the fantasy and horror genres. But he was the perfect person to steer the Rice initiative, in part because he’s not steeped in the conventions and tropes of fantasy fiction, according to Dan McDermott,...

‘Unfrosted’ Review: Jerry Seinfeld’s Painfully Stale Pop-Tarts Comedy Never Heats Up
Image
It’s funny that both of Jerry Seinfeld’s movies have been pegged to such high-concept premises, as the sitcom legend famously built his brand with a show about nothing. In fact, that might be the funniest thing about them. First came 2007’s deeply strange “Bee Movie,” in which Seinfeld — who produced, starred in, and co-wrote the project — voiced a honeybee who starts getting hot for a human florist. Now comes Seinfeld’s directorial debut, a sketchy and surreal business parody that re-imagines the rush to invent the Pop-Tart as if the rivalry between Post and Kellogg’s were as crucial to the future of western civilization as the Space Race or the Manhattan Project.

It’s the perfect streaming comedy for anyone who felt that “Oppenheimer” had too many laughs.

Why would an aging billionaire spend two years of his life — and an ungodly amount of Netflix’s money...

The Best Comedy Cop Shows, Ranked
Image
Crime shows are often among the longest-running TV series, thanks to their relatively low budgets and easy production. They usually contain compartmentalized stories in every episode so you can begin watching at any time and won't feel lost. In some cases, crime shows are also quite funny thanks to a compelling mix of main and supporting characters. The banter between them along with funny moments to break up the seriousness of the police procedural storylines make them appealing in many ways.

Although series like Criminal Minds and CSI have carved out a strong market with darker crime stories, comedy makes for a brilliant, yet unlikely, addition to crime. Whether a series goes all in on the sitcom format or strikes a more even balance between the two genres, these shows are incredibly entertaining. Everything from campy superhero shows to outright parody has defined the comedy-crime sub-genre.

‘Oz’ Retrospective: Creator & Stars Reminisce About HBO Series That Changed Television And Their Lives – Atx
Image
“I’m starting to feel like this is my funeral,” Oz creator Tom Fontana joked, while sitting down for an Atx retrospective on Monday, celebrating his series’ enduring impact.

During the lively, foul-mouthed conversation, moderator Eric Deggans of NPR noted that the prison drama was the first one-hour drama series ever to air on HBO, paving the way toward a Golden Age in small-screen storytelling.

In Fontana’s opinion, Oz was groundbreaking in just one way. “HBO trusted me, as the writer and producer, to make the show I wanted, as opposed to the show they thought they wanted. I thought that gave permission to do [shows like] Sopranos and Six Feet Under,” he said. “I think…we took a chance, and it has allowed other people to make TV shows that take a chance.”

On the panel, Fontana was joined by actor-director Terry Kinney, as well as cast members Lee Tergesen,...

Josh Duhamel at an event for Transformers 2 : La Revanche (2009)
This article is presented by:

Filming epic adventures is certainly nothing new to Josh Duhamel, having starred in four of the Transformers films and the Call of Duty: WWII video game. In between, he’s been a part of 35 films (including voicing Harvey Dent in the forthcoming animated film Batman: The Long Halloween Part One). On television he made his debut as Leo du Pres in the daytime soap All My Children, and guest starred or voiced characters on a variety of series. He was a regular on Las Vegas and Battle Creek.

Now he’s giving the superhero genre a whirl as Sheldon Sampson—The Utopian—on Jupiter’s Legacy. When you check out what he has to say in the following conversation, there seems to be little doubt that at least part of his decision to do so was to impress his seven-year-old son, a massive superhero fan.

Kal Penn at an event for Le Joyeux Noël d'Harold et Kumar (2011)
TV Review: ‘Sunnyside’
Kal Penn at an event for Le Joyeux Noël d'Harold et Kumar (2011)
Kal Penn is an appealing actor whose airy, loose charisma has lately exceeded his luck: On TV in recent years, Penn has appeared on vexed series including “We Are Men,” “Battle Creek,” and “Designated Survivor.” Happily, on his new sitcom, “Sunnyside,” Penn seems to be porting in experience from a different part of his career — the time he spent working in President Barack Obama’s administration, in the Office of Public Engagement. That branch works, as its name would indicate, to keep the public engaged with the work of government. In “Sunnyside,” Penn makes the job literal, playing a disengaged former politician who takes on a new kind of constituent outreach. It’s a job that matches both his experience and his gifts, and a very promising pilot for NBC.

Penn’s Garrett Modi is a former New York City Councilman — representing Sunnyside, an ethnically diverse neighborhood in Queens — drummed...

‘On Becoming a God in Central Florida’ Team on Exploring How the ‘American Dream is Really Rigged’
Like its protagonist, “On Becoming a God in Central Florida” is something of an underdog.

The journey to bring it to the public was one full of ups and downs. Originally developed for AMC, the show ended up sold to YouTube Premium. During the process, head of TriStar Television Suzanne Patmore Gibbs, who was instrumental in developing the show, unexpectedly passed away (in March 2018), while series star and executive producer Kirsten Dunst got pregnant and had her son (in May 2018). There were murmurings that it would launch on YouTube earlier this year, but it never materialized there, and then in June, Showtime announced it had acquired the 10-episode one-hour series. From there, it was a fast turn-around to get the show ready to launch on the premium cabler in August. Although the show has a linear premiere date of Aug. 25, true to form for the network, it dropped the first...

Teen Survivor of Kalamazoo Uber Shooting Spree Heads to Homecoming After Returning to School
Battle Creek (2015)
Abigail Kopf got all dressed up and went to homecoming this weekend — an otherwise normal rite of passage made remarkable by the fact that the teen was gravely injured after being shot in the head during an Uber driver’s alleged 2016 shooting spree.

The 15-year-old, who looked lovely in a purple gown with rosettes across the neckline and delicate spaghetti straps crossing in the back, posed for photos with her boyfriend, who topped off his look with a black cowboy hat, before heading to the big dance on Saturday evening.

“She had wonderful night at homecoming last night,” her mother Vickie Kopf tells People.

Happy retirement, Honey Bunches of Oats lady! In her first Honey Bunches of Oats commercial, Hunter, wearing a hairnet and a red hard hat, says, "I get out of work and I got to the store and somebody smells around, 'Mmm, I smell cookies.' 6 Women of Color in Supporting Roles Who Deserve to Star on Their Own Shows
Zach Braff
TV trends come and go, but who would’ve thought that, with all the focus on inclusion in the past few years, there would now be an uptick of, as IndieWire’s Michael Schneider puts it, “white dudes in crisis” on TV?

To fill the diversity void, the networks have added actors of color to supporting roles. It’s heartening to see that this has created a more realistic picture on TV of what the world looks like, such as the marriage between Zach Braff’s and Tiya Sircar’s characters on “Alex Inc.” representing the growing number of mixed-race marriages in America. Unfortunately, it’s also disappointing to see so many of these favorite actresses get shunted from one supporting role to the next.

Bryan Singer jumps on board to direct Fox’s X-Men series
Author: Zehra Phelan

So much for Bryan Singer, director of four of the X-Men films in the franchise, which include 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, taking a break from further future X-Men duties. He’s just signed up to take the driving seat for the pilot in Fox’s TV series which is as yet untitled.

After finishing up with last summer’s X-Men: Apocalypse Singer stated: “Right now, once this one is done, I’d like to do something really different.” and he couldn’t have chosen a project any more different with a movie about Queen frontman Freddie Mercury so aptly entitled Bohemian Rhapsody which has Mr Robot’s own Rami Malek in the lead as the legendary Mercury. Singer, who has also directed an updated 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, which is based on the Jules Verne novel, currently in pre-production, is in no way a newcomer to the TV arena.

Breaking: Bryan Singer Announced To Direct Fox's X-men TV Series Pilot
We have learned that veteran X-Men director and producer Bryan Singer has been given the reins to direct Fox's X-Men TV series pilot, created by the talented mind of Matt Nix.

Singer is no amateur to this franchise as he has directed; X-Men: Apocalypse, X-Men: Days of Future Past (my favorite), X-Men 2, and the original X-Men. Let us also not forget that he directed one of the greatest cult movies of all time, The Usual Suspects, and he directed Superman Returns which both another writer and myself here actually liked quite a bit. The Fox X-Men TV series will be Singer's most recent venture after his TV shows Battle Creek and the Munster's reboot entitled Mockingbird Lane.

We also need to realize that this show is created by the great Matt Nix, who taught us after creating Burn Notice that Bruce Campbell is more than just Ash from The Evil Dead,...

After the latest departure and sudden arrest of Director Patricia Thornton (Sandrine Holt), Phoenix Foundation has recruited needed a new director.

CBS announced actress Meredith Eaton will fill in those shoes as a series regular on MacGyver. She will play Matt Webber, the new director of operations and boss to Mac.

According to the press announcement, Matty Webber is a legend in the covert ops world. She was Jack’s (George Eads) superior for 18 months while on assignment in South America.

There’s also a little hint that Jack may not be happy to having her as a boss again.

‘Better Call Saul’ Surprise Teaser: ‘Breaking Bad’ Favorite [Spoiler] May Return
Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad (2008)
The hype for the third season of “Better Call Saul” just kicked into high gear with the release of a new teaser, masking as an advertisement for a everyone’s favorite “Breaking Bad” restaurant. Spoilers ahead!

Proving a common fan theory possibly true, Gus Fring — the chicken king — is coming back. The “Breaking Bad” character, played by Giancarlo Esposito, was one of the biggest methamphetamine distributors in the Southwestern United States, and Walter White’s (Bryan Cranston) arch nemesis. While his creative ruthlessness and disturbingly placid demeanor didn’t exactly endear him to fans, his complexity and notoriously stomach-churning demise make him a favorite in the “Breaking Bad” universe.

Federal Court Rules Police Can Shoot a Barking or Moving Dog While Entering a Home
A federal court in Grand Rapids, Michigan, ruled that police can shoot a dog while entering a home if the animal “moves or barks” in the officer’s presence.

The decision is the final step in a case brought to court by Mark and Cheryl Brown of Battle Creek, whose pit bull was killed while officers were executing a search warrant on their home in 2013.

The couple claimed that officers “unlawfully seized their property in violation of the Fourth Amendment when officers shot and killed two dogs while executing a search warrant.”

An officer testified that he shot the first...
