For viewers whose tastes run more to Masterpiece Classic than "Real Housewives" (no judgment), "Downton Abbey" is pretty much the ultimate comfort watch. Julian Fellowes' historical drama follows the aristocratic Crawleys from the day after the sinking of the Titanic into the Roaring Twenties, showcasing all the social changes experienced by the family, as well as their extensive staff downstairs. Their high-class problems provide the basis for many of the show's episodes, offering a lens to view the historical period peppered with deliciously aristocratic drama.

"Downton Abbey" ran for six seasons on ITV and PBS, earning 16 Emmy Awards and dozens more nominations. The show was such a success that it earned two feature film sequels -- "Downton Abbey" and the vibrant and emotional "Downton Abbey: A New Era" -- with a third, "Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale," slated for release...

“Maybe It’s a Good Thing”: ‘Downton Abbey’ Star Explains Why They’re Missing From the Final Movie
Image
With his brand-new Netflix crime series, Department Q, on the horizon, Watchmen and Downton Abbey star Matthew Goode is on the minds of many. Especially those hoping for a comeback for Henry Talbot in the upcoming final installment of the Downton Abbey film trilogy, The Grand Finale, scheduled to premiere on September 12. With many of the show's most memorable names returning for a last look into the lives of the Crawleys et al., including the likes of Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Michelle Dockery, Joanne Froggatt, Jim Carter, and even a returning Paul Giamatti, who is reprising his role as Harold Levinson. Could Goode be joining the last hurrah?

In an interview with Radio Times, Goode delivered the perhaps expected but nevertheless sad news that Talbot will not be returning for the final installment in Julian Fellowes' beloved period franchise, which will come as little surprise as he wasn't in the second film either.

'Downton Abbey' Star Describes the "Final Moment" of Production
Image
While the previous Downton Abbey film may have been subtitled A New Era, the upcoming third film and final installment in the franchise certainly indicates the end of an era. Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale hits theaters on Sep. 12, 2025, and will bring back the familiar faces and characters that fans have grown to love. They include Joanne Froggatt, who has portrayed Anna Bates (née Smith) in the show since the beginning. Froggatt currently stars in the Paramount+ series MobLand as Jan, who is trying to create some semblance of a normal life despite her husband Harry (Tom Hardy) being a dangerous enforcer for a criminal family. MovieWeb spoke with Froggatt about the show, and also touched on Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale.

"It's the third and final movie, and we started filming the first season 15 years ago. So it was super emotional," Froggatt told MovieWeb. She continued:

Paul Giamatti Describes Downton Abbey 3 as Tribute to Maggie Smith
Paul Giamatti
Paul Giamatti has spoken about returning to the Downton Abbey franchise for the upcoming third film, describing the production as shaped by the absence of Dame Maggie Smith, who died in September 2024.

In an interview with People, Giamatti said the cast continued working with her memory in mind. “It was not the same without her, but it felt very much like in her honor in some way,” he said. “She certainly still feels present through the whole thing. Not having her there is obviously a huge loss, but everybody was still acting in her spirit.”

Giamatti plays Harold Levinson, the brother of Cora Crawley, a role he first portrayed during the show’s 2013 Christmas special. Although his initial appearance was limited to one episode, Giamatti said he was surprised to be invited back. “The interesting thing for me was that they even asked me at all because I was like,...

Universal’s CinemaCon Presentation Focuses on What Works in Theaters: Sequels and Horror
Image
A lot of the conversation at CinemaCon 2025 has been about trying to find the elusive answer to the question of how to get audiences back in theaters for films that aren’t franchises and horror…the sort of offerings that made up the vast majority of Universal’s CinemaCon presentation on Wednesday afternoon.

The presentation, which kicked off with an elegant, 50-piece live orchestra playing iconic Universal film scores and showcased everything from “Wicked: For Good” to “Jurassic World: Rebirth,” was a notable departure from Warner Bros.’ focus on risky original titles and Lionsgate’s attempts to strike a balance on expanding their franchises and offering some low budget originality. Universal’s message was about stability, offering titles that audiences know and which will likely provide reliable box office while the industry as a whole tries to figure out how to effectively bring variety back to the big screen in...

‘Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale’ Trailer Ushers In 1930 & Tells Us It’s Time To Say Goodbye – CinemaCon
Image
Focus Features today offered CinemaCon attendees an emotional look at the first trailer for Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. This is the last in the trilogy of big screen continuations of the British TV drama phenomenon. It’s written by series creator Julian Fellowes and directed by Simon Curtis.

Plot details had previously been sparse, but the trailer shown today includes a title card that tells us “It’s time to say goodbye” before we see Hugh Bonneville’s Earl of Grantham patting the facade of the manor house on the Grantham Estate in what indeed appears to be a farewell.

Before that, we hear Jim Carter’s Mr. Carson saying, “Welcome to 1930.” There are images of the family at the races, of Dominic West’s Guy Dexter in London’s West End and Michelle Dockery’s Lady Mary ascending steps while wearing a sumptuous red gown. A portrait of...

Focus Creates A Buzz With First Footage Of Emma Stone In ‘Bugonia’ – CinemaCon
Image
Focus Features rolled out new footage from some of its highly anticipated upcoming films during its portion of Universal’s CinemaCon presentation Wednesday, including a quick teaser for Yorgos Lanthimos’ next movie Bugonia. The film is a reteam for Lanthimos and his Kinds of Kindness stars Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons and hits domestic theaters November 7.

The story follows two conspiracy-obsessed men who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced she is an alien intent on destroying Planet Earth. In the footage shown today were ample musings on and shots of honey bees, as well as Stone’s CEO literally having her hair buzzed off.

This was fitting after Focus president Peter Kujawski reminded the CinemaCon audience that he last year called specialty films “the honey bees of the movie business who are pollinating the future.” Today, he added movie theaters to that equation. He also said, “We...

Focus Features Debuts First Footage of Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Bugonia’ at CinemaCon
Image
Focus Features’ CinemaCon 2025 presentation was heavy on the auteurs, with the studio offering attendees a first look at two of the year’s most anticipated titles expected to debut on the European festival circuit: Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Bugonia” and Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme.”

“Bugonia” sees Lanthimos re-teaming with frequent collaborators Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons in predictably subversive fashion. A loose remake of Jang Joon-hwan’s 2003 sci-fi satire “Save the Green Planet,” the film stars Stone as a powerful pharmaceutical executive who is kidnapped by a conspiracy theorist (Plemons) who believes she is an alien. Lanthimos’ take on the project is written by “The Menu” scribe Will Tracy and produced by Ari Aster. With a November release date on the books, many expect the film to debut in Venice before launching an Oscar campaign.

The “Bugonia” footage was especially brief, showing footage of a honey bee pollinating flowers, which...

‘Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale’ Gets Elegant Trailer at CinemaCon: ‘It’s Time to Say Goodbye’
Image
“It’s time to say goodbye.”

That’s the tagline for “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale,” at least according to a new trailer that premiered at CinemaCon on Wednesday.

That means that all the balls and the flower shows and the garden parties and the haunting excursions and the long, drawn out dinners have come down to this. Yes, the Granthams, those pillars of English aristocracy, are finally closing the doors of their storied estate.

Focus Features presented the first look the sequel as part of Universal’s presentation to theater owners and executives at CinemaCon, and it offers some of the upstairs, downstairs drama that’s made this series so beloved — only this time everything is done in a more elegiac key. It’s 1930, and Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) is mostly seen enjoying herself in London’s high society. For the rest of the short teaser, Lord and Lady...

‘Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale’: The Crawleys Say Goodbye in First Trailer
Image
After six seasons and three films, it is time for “Downton Abbey” to finally say goodbye.

As part of its presentation at CinemaCon, Focus Features debuted the first trailer for “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale,” for theater owners on Wednesday. It is a film that not only says goodbye to the series’ longtime fans, but also to the late Maggie Smith, whose bitingly witty Dowager Countess passed away onscreen in “Downton Abbey: A New Era” in 2022 and who herself died last year at the age of 89.

In the trailer, we see Lord Grantham and the rest of the Crawleys enjoying the races at the Royal Ascot in 1930. There are plenty of grand shots of Britain as the family enters a new decade, and Lady Mary is rising as the new head of the family and becoming one of the most prominent members of high society.

But as one generation passes to another,...

Paul Giamatti Reveals the "Real Significance" of His 'Downton Abbey 3' Return
Image
When it was announced that Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers) was going to make a return to Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, fans were a bit taken aback. When the two-time Oscar nominee first appeared in Season 4 of the series, he didn't feel like the kind of character that would make a comeback — and this was supported by the fact that he was only in one episode of the entire series. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, however, Giamatti revealed that his character will be extremely relevant to the final chapter of Downton Abbey.

Before he talked about it, however, Giamatti admitted that, just like fans, he was also "really surprised" that he was invited back by franchise creator Julian Fellowes (The Gilded Age). He mentioned that his character, Cora Crawley's (Elizabeth McGovern) brother Harold Levinson, was "marginal" when he was introduced in Season 4. This time, however, he teases that...

'Downton Abbey 3's Official Title Confirms What Fans Have Long Feared
Image
"The time has come to say goodbye." That's the tagline on the new poster for Downton Abbey 3, which has officially been christened Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, confirming what fans have long feared about the upcoming film. Beginning in 2010, the quaint British historical drama captivated the world across six seasons and five specials with its story of the Crawley family and their domestic servants; so much so that it led to a feature film in 2019. A sequel, Downton Abbey: A New Era, was released three years later, with Downton Abbey 3 being announced in 2024.

The new poster for Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale (seen below) showcases Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) in a stunning red gown, walking the halls of the famed Yorkshire country estate. The tagline confirms that, sadly, this does appear to be the end of the saga once and for all, which was pretty much already known by fans,...

‘Downton Abbey’ Prepares To Say Goodbye in First Poster for ‘The Grand Finale’
Image
The time is coming to say goodbye to Downton Abbey and its inhabitants one more time. Today, the official Downton Abbey account on Instagram unveiled the very first poster for the upcoming movie Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. Although the poster is not too revealing, it does put Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) in the spotlight. ‘Downton Abbey 3’ Gets a Fittingly Emotional Title
Image
“Downton Abbey 3” will mark a significant conclusion for the beloved franchise, as the title of the film — as revealed on Thursday — suggests this really is the end of the road for “Downton Abbey.” Unveiling a teaser poster, Focus Features also revealed the film’s title: “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale.”

“It’s time to say goodbye,” the tagline reads on the poster, which sees Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) in the familiar halls of Downton. The film hits theaters later this year.

Julian Fellowes, the creator of the TV series and writer of the first two films, returns to pen the screenplay for “The Grand Finale,” which is directed by Simon Curtis who spearheaded 2022’s “Downton Abbey: A New Era.”

Plot details are under wraps but the new film follows in the footsteps of 2022’s “A New Era” and 2019’s “Downton Abbey” movie, both continuations of the acclaimed TV series that ran for six seasons.

'Downton Abbey 3' Star Shares Sad but Touching Thoughts
Image
Downton Abbey may seem like an unending franchise at this point, 15 years after it first debuted as an acclaimed television series that crossed the Atlantic and found a big American audience. If you take the cast and crew's word for it, though, Downton Abbey 3 will be the final iteration of this historical drama which has tracked the lives of different families and classes at the turn of the 20th century.

As such, the mood on set was somewhat bittersweet. Michelle Dockery, who has starred in the show as Lady Mary Crawley since the beginning, recently spoke with MovieWeb about returning to the franchise with Downton Abbey 3, which comes to theaters on Sep. 12, 2025. "Well, I mean, going into this last one was like..." Dockery trailed off. "First of all, to do one film was incredible for us. To now look back and we've done a series and three movies is just incredible.

'Downton Abbey 3' Will Be a "Meaningful" Tribute to the Late Maggie Smith
Image
Earlier this year, the world lost a true treasure when Dame Maggie Smith passed away at the age of 89, but her legacy will live on in the new Downton Abbey movie that’s slated to release next year. Smith starred in the original series as Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, and reprised the role twice more in two feature films: 2019’s Downton Abbey and 2022’s Downton Abbey: A New Era. Sadly, art imitated life in the last film, which saw her character pass away peacefully two years before Smith died in real life.

Per TV Line, Downton Abbey 3 is slated to release on Sep. 12, 2025, and the outlet caught up with executive producer Gareth Neame to discuss how Smith’s passing affected the film and its story. Though Smith died after filming was complete, he said it added more weight to the scenes that have the actors mourning...

‘Downton Abbey 3’ Will Honor Maggie Smith With “Meaningful” Tribute, EP Gareth Neame Says
Image
Downton Abbey 3 will pay homage to the “end of an era” with the loss of the Dowager Countess, which has now taken on greater significance following the death of Oscar-winning actress Maggie Smith, executive producer Gareth Neame said.

Speaking to TVLine in a recent interview, Neame said the film — due in theaters Sept. 12, 2025 — will feature the cast and crew’s “huge respect for her … come across in the next movie.” He added, “We will never see the like of Dame Maggie Smith ever again.”

“The fact that Dame Maggie herself has now passed away since that time, I do think, has given a real added poignancy to a story that we would have planned anyway,” the Emmy winner and former BBC exec said. “The loss of the Dowager, it now feels far more significant that you see actors playing characters mourning the family matriarch. But I also see actors...

‘Downton Abbey 3’ Will Have a ‘Meaningful Tribute’ to Maggie Smith, Says Producer
Image
The Crawleys’ return to the big screen in the third “Downton Abbey” movie next September will be bittersweet, as the producer of the hit ITV/PBS series says they will pay homage to the late Maggie Smith, who played the family matriarch Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham.

“We will never see the like of Dame Maggie Smith ever again,” producer Gareth Neame told TVLine on Tuesday.

Smith, who won three Emmys, four SAG Awards and a Golden Globe for her “Downton” work, died this past September at age 89. As Violet, Smith won over fans on both sides of the Atlantic with her cutting wit and her verbal sparring with Lady Maud Bagshaw, played by fellow “Harry Potter” star Imelda Staunton.

Her passing came two years after the passing of the Dowager Countess in “Downton Abbey: A New Era,” in which more about Violet’s past was revealed as...
