The remarkable story of the nearly catastrophic 1970 NASA mission is brought out by the compelling Apollo 13 documentary on Netflix, Apollo 13: Survival. The events of the expedition are mostly preserved in the documentary, though certain facts have been altered for cinematic effect. In documentary films, the distinction between realism and artistic license is sometimes unclear, and Apollo 13 is no exception. Beyond what the documentary provides, there is more to the storyfrom staged reinterpretations to historical accuracy.
The genuine narrative of Apollo 13: Survival is filled with genuine instances of composure under duress, collaboration, and technical mastery. But in cinema, artistic decisions sometimes include rewriting or omitting details in order to preserve tension and emotional resonance. These choices result in a unique viewing experience, but they also mean that specific real-life details are sacrificed or changed. That's also the case with Apollo 13: Survival.

The new documentary Apollo 13: Survival is now streaming on Netflix, and it tells the true story laid out in Tom Hanks' 1995 hit Apollo 13. The Apollo 13 mission was a standout moment in American history, a disaster-turned-rescue mission that captured the whole world for a week. On April 11, 1970, the Apollo space program launched its seventh crewed mission, meant to land on the moon. The mission went horribly awry and was aborted, however, when, two days into the mission, an oxygen tank ruptured, killing both the life-support and electrical systems.
With their ship damaged beyond repair, the three-man crew Commander Jim Lovell, command module pilot John "Jack" Swigert, and lunar module pilot Fred Haise were forced to abandon the ship and transfer to the much smaller lunar module. Houston's Mission Control quickly outlined new procedures so that the lunar module could support three men for four days, as opposed to...

Apollo 13: Survival is a new documentary film streaming on Netflix that tells the story of a real-life thriller about the intense journey of the Apollo 13 mission to the moon, from launch to tragedy to resolution. When Apollo 13 was launched into space on April 11th, 1970, it was planned to become the 3rd successful moon landing mission conducted by the United States. However, a severe failure in the spacecraft led to not only the failure of the mission but also to the almost certain possibility of the astronauts losing their lives. Using real footage from the mission and also other relevant footage from NASA expeditions to keep its narrative as close to the real events as possible, Apollo 13: Survival bears visual testimony to the heroic and almost miraculous survival of the astronauts. Overall, the Netflix documentary film might be a bit slow for casual viewers, but it is an intense...

September means networks are rolling out the good stuff following the summer blahs, and Netflix’s September offerings are no exception.
In addition to “The Perfect Couple” (see below) the streamer’s September offerings include “Emily in Paris” Season 4 Part 2, starring Lily Collins, as well as the downright charming “Nobody Wants This,” a unique rom-com starring millennial aughts TV gods Adam Brody and Kristen Bell — this one will be all over your social media feed, so make sure to binge it the second it drops.
On the movie front, in addition to a slew of old favorites, film fanatics’ best bet is likely “His Three Daughters,” a festival fave starring Elisabeth Olsen, Carrie Coon, and Natasha Lyonne. The film, about three very different siblings coming together in their father’s dying days, is expected to be a major awards contender after premiering at TIFF last year.

"I think it is the most critical situation we've faced so far in the manned space flight program." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film titled Apollo 13: Survival, a gripping look at the true story of what really happened on Apollo 13 in the spring of 1970. This premiered at Cph:dox and it will be streaming on Netflix in early September for everyone. Just nine months after Neil Armstrong landed on the moon, NASA faced its greatest crisis — three astronauts stranded halfway to the moon on a spacecraft that had suffered a catastrophic explosion. Using original footage and interviews, this documentary tells the nail-biting story of Apollo 13 and the struggle to bring its astronauts safely home. Everyone knows the famous Apollo 13 movie starring Tom Hanks & Bill Paxton (from 1995 - which is one of my favorites), but this doc features actual footage and tells the real story.
