Paul Mescal is strapping in for a filmmaking journey like no other. The Aftersun star revealed he had second thoughts when signing up for Richard Linklater’s Merrily We Roll Along, a film set to be shot over 20 years. “I probably thought, ‘Oh, fuck!’” Mescal told Esquire UK, acknowledging the magnitude of the commitment.
Linklater, known for his time-lapse epic Boyhood, is tackling Stephen Sondheim’s beloved musical with the same long-game approach. The story, originally a Broadway play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, follows three friends in reverse chronological order as their careers in entertainment unfold and unravel. Mescal plays Franklin Shepard, a composer, alongside Ben Platt and Beanie Feldstein as his closest companions.
Mescal admitted that the daunting timeline might leave him second-guessing his choices: “I think I’m going to spend...

The actors from the current revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s “Merrily We Roll Along” have skyrocketed in Gold Derby’s combined odds for the 2024 Tony Awards nominations. The prediction center displays commanding leads for Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe to win their respective categories. This is an understandable result considering this revival is the hottest ticket in town and this trio of performers has been ever-present in the media. But how often does a trio of actors from the same production pull off three separate acting victories at the Tony Awards?
It’s quite common for a musical to grab two acting trophies, but three awards is much rarer. To date, only 15 musical productions have earned three acting wins. The first time this feat occurred was at the 1956 ceremony, which was ironically the first time the Tony Awards ever announced a slate of nominees (previously...

Thanksgiving proved plentiful for Broadway last week, with box office – and ticket prices – up by nearly 30% over the previous week.
With tourists packing New York City, theatergoers splurging on higher priced holiday seats and the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade trumpeting Broadway’s bounty, the 26 shows on the boards grossed a combined $34,512,033, a 28% increase over the previous week’s $27,060,113.
With total attendance holding steady – and three fewer shows on the roster – the increase in receipts can be attributed to a 27% bump in average ticket price: $151, compared to the previous week’s $118.
Overall, 90% of Broadway seats were filled during the holiday week.
Nearly all of the productions reported a surge, with, for just two examples, both Merrily We Roll Along and & Juliet setting new house records at their respective venues: Merrily took in $2,046,288, beating its own previous record at the Hudson Theatre, and & Juliet grossed $1,459,276, besting Beautiful‘s previous high-water marks at the Sondheim.

After spending 12 years on his Oscar-nominated drama “Boyhood,” Richard Linklater is ready to try the approach again.
Linklater will direct an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s “Merrily We Roll Along,” which will be shot over a 20-year period. Beanie Feldstein, Ben Platt and Blake Jenner are set to star in the film for Blumhouse.
“I first saw, and fell in love with ‘Merrily’ in the ‘80s and I can’t think of a better place to spend the next 20 years than in the world of a Sondheim musical. I don’t enter this multi-year experience lightly, but it seems the best, perhaps the only way, to do this story justice on film,” said Linklater.
Ginger Sledge, Jason Blum, Jonathan Marc Sherman and Linklater are producers on the film.
