Celebrities have become a mainstay of modern culture, and so have the creepy fixations certain fans can't seem to stop themselves from forming on them. A parasocial relationship happens when a person believes that they have a "special connection" with someone despite never meeting them, an imagined bond that can become scary and potentially dangerous when they discover their idol doesn't reciprocate these feelings. This form of attachment has led to some terrifying situations for many famous people throughout the years, and it's the basis for the movie Be My Cat: A Film for Anne, which follows a movie director as he tries to get Hollywood actress Anne Hathaway to appear in his film. Directed by and starring Adrian Tofei, this found-footage horror showcases the worst aspects of parasocial relationships and the atrocities fans will commit in the hopes of getting their favorite star's attention. It shows the dark side of fandom and,...

The crisp creepiness of October may be behind us, but with the colder months comes a new sort of setting perfect for watching horror movies. With the punishing wind whipping chill into the air outside — and the promise of snow keeping our blankets and fireplaces at the ready — winter is just the right time for inviting fear into your home and snuggling up with something spooky.
Fortunately for indie movie fans, there are dozens of low-budget chillers waiting to be streamed on Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, Peacock, AMC+, Showtime, Amazon Prime Video, and a variety of other streaming platforms right now. From contemporary horror classics (see Robert Eggers’ “The Witch” or Bryan Bertino’s “The Strangers”) to beloved horror anthologies and non-English language movies (“Train to Busan”), the major streaming platforms offer no shortage...

Whether it’s film “recovered” from a crime scene/disaster site or continuous “live video” watched in real time, found footage movies are among the most terrifying titles available to horror lovers. From the collected clips of “V/H/S” to the harrowing ordeal captured in “Unfriended,” these frightening flicks feel at once like pieces of entertainment and physical proof of hell on Earth.
The naturalistic approach to cinema doesn’t belong exclusively to the horror arena, believe it or not. Some film historians posit that the first found footage film was “The Connection”: an experimental joint by Shirley Clarke from 1961 about drug addicts (which is arguably horrific but definitely not a horror movie). And yet, the found footage technique has become so prevalent within the horror genre that it’s almost impossible to extricate the form from the fear it has inspired.

The film centres on two lovers with big plans: ending all life on Earth. Given that the Romanian film industry depends almost exclusively on state funding, guerrilla filmmaking and genre productions are quite rare. Five years after directing Be My Cat: A Film for Anne, the first Romanian found-footage horror that went on to be shown at circa 30 horror film festivals around the globe, director Adrian Ţofei is currently in post-production with an ultra-independent mockumentary, We Put the World to Sleep. Written by Ţofei and highly improvised on set, the story follows actors Adrian (Adrian Ţofei) and Duru (Duru Yucel-Tofei), playing two lovers planning to end life on Earth. The two protagonists lose themselves in their characters and embark on a secret mission, convinced that the only way to end suffering – the strong crushing the vulnerable – is to reset the world to its initial,...

Be My Cat: A Film for Anne is a Romanian horror film. Reviewed here on 28Dla (A Be My Cat Review), this title is showing on Digital platforms, via Terror Films. In Be My Cat: A Film for Anne, Adrian plays himself, though a little more deranged. He lures three actresses to his home, to film a "real Hollywood movie." But, these actresses are in for more than they bargained for. Be My Cat: A Film for Anne will be available on most Digital platforms this week. This film-within-a-film is also an attempt to bring actress Anne Hathaway to Romania. Though, murder is probably not a great selling point. As Tofei prepares his latest production, the set turns into a torture chamber. Be My Cat: A Film for Anne has appeared at numerous film festivals, winning several awards. At A Night of Horror International Film Festival, the film won "Best Film.

Even though the holidays are upon us, that doesn’t mean the horror and sci-fi genres are slowing down, especially on the VOD side of things. Adrian Tofei will self-distribute Be My Cat aka Be My Cat: A Film for Anne. The release date, for Video-on-demand, is coming in early December. Meanwhile, the DVD will be released in January of 2017. The film, from Romania, features a manic film director, with a strange obsession. He is determined to shoot Anne Hathaway. The film has been reviewed, on 28Dla, here (Kenna Rae): Be My Cat Review on 28Dla. Shot in a found footage style, Be My Cat is everything but conventional. And, a preview of the film's North American launch is hosted here. This film fan has seen this title. It is a very low budget production, in which a scheming director brings several actresses to his home. Each has been chosen because they look like his obsession, Anne Hathaway. Events take a dark twist, when the director resorts to restraint and torture. All shot on camera,...

This autumn Whitby's horror fest featured original horror ideas, such as Romania's first-found footage horror ('Be my Cat: A film for Anne'). It was also a good year for great titles, such as the Finnish 'Bunny the Killer Thing', directed by Joonas Makkonen, and 'Artichokes Piranha from the Prehistoric Abyss', directed by Javier Lozano Sanchez. There was also the world's least expected horror subjects, for a lost glove's owner in Canadian 'Mitten'....

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by director Adrian Tofei. Director/writer: Adrian Tofei. Cast: Adrian Tofei, Sonia Teodoriu, Florentina Hariton and Alexandra Stroe. Be My Cat: A Film For Anne is Romania's first found footage horror film, and the first feature from director Adrian Tofei, also the film's writer, producer and star. This disturbing portrayal of an obsessed fan making a film about an obsessed fan begs questions about reality, art, film and the industry itself, and does so with incredible guts and originality. The chilling realism is sure to make viewers squirm like watching a snuff film but, thankfully, the authenticity comes from strong performances by an excellent cast. Though crawling with creep appeal, this film won't just satisfy horror fans, it should intrigue film nerds and aspiring filmmakers alike as it relentlessly pushes boundaries, making for a totally unique cinematic experience. Adrian is...
