Before he directed “Get Out,” Jordan Peele was best known as a comedy figure, one half of the famed “Key & Peele” duo. His first feature transformed Peele’s reputation: As “Get Out” grossed over $250 million worldwide, Peele became known first and foremost as a filmmaker, with his racially-tinged story about rich white people who keep black people under mind control striking audiences as both outrageous and eerily familiar. No matter the absurd premise, “Get Out” explores the paranoia and victimization of the African American experience with palpable suspense and ideas that go well beyond the realm of punchlines.

Nevertheless, as the movie careens through awards season, Golden Globes voters will be considering “Get Out” in the Best Musical or Comedy category, not for Best Drama. This outcome has prompted plenty of online backlash, and a tweet from Peele calling the movie a documentary, acknowledging the limitations of those categories.

When “Get Out” premiered in a secret midnight slot at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, nobody could have predicted it would become a cultural phenomenon. The $4.5 million Blumhouse production was billed as a satiric horror movie about race, directed by former “Key & Peele” sketch comedian Jordan Peele in his feature-length debut, and a cursory reading of those details suggested a wacky spoof of the “Scary Movie” variety.

Instead, Peele had made a genre-defying look at race relations in America, merging the interracial dynamics of “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?” with an outrageous B-movie premise worthy of George Romero. That premise — which finds wealthy white liberals using hypnosis and brain surgery to turn black people into their slaves — skewered the notion of a post-racial America from multiple directions at once, setting aside more obvious targets to unearth some of the worst...

The challenge requires people to run as fast they can straight toward a camera and turn at the last second, mimicking the scene in Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” in which Walter (Marcus Henderson) comes running straight at Chris (Daniel Kaluuya).

According to Forbes, “Get Out” is now the highest grossing debut film from a writer-director based on an original screenplay. The previous record holder was “The Blair Witch Project,” which ended its run in 1999 with $140 million.

Twenty years after forming the comedy trio Stella, Michael Showalter, Michael Ian Black and David Wain have reunited for a hilarious new sketch titled “Rip Van Winkle.” The trio taped the short back in January while in San Francisco to attend Sketchfest, where it was then shown.

“Get Out” comes on a weekend when the Oscars are expected to make amends for the presumed wrongs over the last two years of the #OscarsSoWhite controversy.

In his latest parody, James Corden spoofs the boy band phenomenon that was so overwhelmingly popular in the 90s and 2000s. A mockumentary, which aired on Thursday on “The Late Late Show,” follows the rise and fall of the (fake) band Thr33way. For this, Corden enlisted some help from comedians Jordan Peele and Nick Kroll. Matt Spicer had only a couple of shorts under his belt, but when he sent his “Ingrid Goes West” screenplay to his agent, he got a call saying Aubrey Plaza wanted to play the lead — and then, Plaza was such a fan that she helped wrangle co-stars Elizabeth Olsen and O’Shea Jackson Jr. Things went so smoothly, production began just eight months after Spicer sent his agent the script.

And that’s when the trouble started.

The filmmakers lost a full day of shooting after a Santa Clarita wildfire destroyed one of their sets, while a plumbing problem at another location turned a house into a biohazard. Neon beat out A24 and Netflix, who were also bidding on the film, Variety reports. The acquisition came two days after the film’s premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.

Amazon has won a fierce bidding war for filmmaker Michael Showalter’s “The Big Sick,” paying $12 million for the U.S. rights to the dramatic comedy. The bidding reached $10 million late on Friday night, with Amazon, Netflix, Fox Searchlight and Focus Features all in the hunt.

It took a while, but Kumail Nanjiani has worked his way into popular culture with a combination of sincerity and snarky charm. Even as he made his name in standup comedy and memorable television roles (most recently on “Silicon Valley”), he found acclaim for his one-man shows, which dig through his struggles as a Pakistani-American at odds with his traditional upbringing.

Now comes “The Big Sick,” which funnels the two sides of his career into a genuine crowdpleaser that juggles humor and pathos through a personal lens. Co-written with wife Emily V. Let the bidding begin. Going in, director Michael Showalter’s “The Big Sick” was pegged as the big acquisition title for this year’s Sundance Film Festival and based on the very warm reception it received at tonight’s premiere, that’s the case. It premiered at the sold-out Eccles Theater and earned a number of big laughs from an audience that also appeared to be equally engaged in the film’s heartfelt drama.

Represented were top executives from Magnolia, Neon, Bleecker, IFC, CBS Films, Roadside Attractions, Amazon, Fox Searchlight, Sony Pictures Classics, Netflix and A24. With 15 minutes left in the movie, executives were climbing out of their seats and conferring in the back of the theater and in the lobby.

Frantz is dead when Frantz begins though everyone who knew him keeps willing him back to life through memories and the general refusal to let go. The movie has a terrifically simple plot generating event which reaps bountiful plot threads and emotions: In 1919 Germany, just after the first World War, a young girl named Anna (Paula Beer, Venice Winner Best Young Actor) repeatedly encounters a Frenchman named Adrien (Pierre Niney) while visiting her dead fiancee Frantz's (Anton von Lucke) grave. Then he comes knocking at her door. Why is he there? What does he want with Anna and Frantz parents? At first she and Frantz's parents (Ernst Stötzner and Marie Gruber, both superb) are wary about him since the wounds between the countries are still fresh. Quickly they warm to him though, much to their town's disapproval, when they realize that he knew...

There is a very tangible, solid tone and feel that is vastly different between the Marvel and DC movie universes. And each realm is attracting a different kind of actor. Soon, every working thespian on the planet will be distinguished by whether or not they are a Marvel or DC type performer. And in the case of someone like Michael Keaton, there will be the rare instance where one actor is able to live and breath in both of these cinematic worlds. But not good old Woody Harrelson. He has drawn his line in the sand, declaring himself a Marvel man.

The McU has been an interesting home to actors of all shapes, sizes and spandex preference. While it helped relaunch Robert Downey Jr. as a bankable leading man after some very troubling times in his personal life, Marvel Studios has also been able to save a pretty penny by employing up and coming actors on the verge of making it in Hollywood. And as time has moved, Marvel has also become a place where older, more distinguished actors such as Michael Douglas, Robert Redford and Cate Blanchett can hang their hat. Woody Harrelson falls into this later category. And he defiantly wants a piece of the action.

Woody Harrelson hasn't exactly declared who he wants to play in the Marvel on-screen universe, or even what type of role he'd like to take on. Would he play an aging superhero? Or a member of the military trying to keep these god-like humans in check? Here's what he had to say to Collider when asked the question of whether he was interested in joining a comic book adventure.

"Big interest. In fact, I would love to be a part of that Marvel universe."

Come on, who doesn't want to be in a Marvel or DC movie at this point? It's almost become a right of passage. From recent Oscar-winner Brie Larson entering talks to play Captain Marvel to Sharon Stone teasing her turn as a heat-powered superhero in an upcoming Phase 3 movie, everyone is vying for that prime Marvel real estate. And these movies help return some of Hollywood's more legendary actors to the forefront of the stage.

Other recent additions to the Marvel family include Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, though their characters haven't been introduced at this time. It will be nice to see the Tango & Cash team reunited on the big screen. And Jeff Goldblum has just plucked a prime role as one of the secondary villains, known as the Grandmaster, in Thor: Ragnarok. Marvel casting knows no bounds, except for those individuals kicking it over at DC Films.

Now comes the question, who exactly would Woody Harrelson play? Is there an aging superhero role ready and waiting for him in one of the upcoming Phase 3 adventures that has not yet been cast? Will he play a civilian in Captain Marvel? An expat in Black Panther? Perhaps he'll take on the rumored role of The Tinkerer in Spider-Man: Homecoming and turn villain? It's tough to say, but with plenty of new heroes being introduced in the massive two part Avengers: Infinity War the sky is the limit.

In his interview, Harrelson goes onto reveal that he recently watched Deadpool on a plane, and loved it. That's the type of Marvel movie he'd like to be attached to. Even though it's not coming directly from Marvel Studios, perhaps he could be one of the men already campaigning for the role of Cable in Deadpool 2. The actor is already well-known to younger genre fans, having played Haymitch Abernathy in the Hunger Games quadrilogy. It sounds like one of Harrelson's next movies may be Zombieland 2. As he points out, Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were responsible for the screenplay on the first one. Perhaps we are about to see a reunion on the Fox Marvel side of things? Only time will tell. Woody can be seen this weekend in the sequel Now You See Me 2: The Second Act.

This weekend is very crowded at the box office, and outside of Warcraft, it is very sequel heavy. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is entering its second turn at the box office, James Wan will probably win with The Conjuring 2, and then there is the sequel nobody asked for, Now You See Me: The Second Act. Not only does the sequel feel very unnecessary, but the title is pretty predictable. Well, thanks to a brilliant writer on Twitter, we now have a lot of great alternate titles for it. 27 to be exact.

Writer Fran Hoepfner recently took to her Twitter account to inform us all that she has been brainstorming better titles for the Now You See Me sequel for a few months. Though it may have started as a pet project for her, she waited for the film's opening weekend to share her ideas with the world. To put it simply, she totally nailed it.

"For the past few months I have been writing alternate titles for Now You See Me 2 and now I'm going to post all of them. Thanks."

Hoepfner kept herself busy for the last few months, or at least for several minutes here or there over the first part of the year, because she unleashed this massive stream of alternate titles for Now You See Me 2 on Friday. All in all, she shared 27 tweets ranging from two word simplicity to something that would barely fit on a movie poster. All of them are pretty great. Titles like "Seen 2" and "Oops You Saw Me Again" encapsulated her thoughts, and perhaps most of our thoughts, about just how ridiculous this movie actually is.

Now You See Me 2 is faring decently enough at the box office so far. It is on pace to take third place for the weekend behind The Conjuring 2 and Warcraft with somewhere around $22 million. That puts it reasonably well below the opening weekend for the original Now You See Me, which brought in $29.4 million on its first frame of release, and went on to gross $351.7 million worldwide on a $75 million budget, which represented a pretty decent return for Lionsgate, though it didn't exactly feel like a franchise film.

Now You See Me 2 currently sits at a 37 percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, but seems to be fairing much better with fans, which seems to echo what happened with the first film. Though, critics didn't hate the original quite as much. The sequel added some star power with Daniel Radcliffe and Lizzy Caplan, but Isla Fisher didn't return. Lionsgate seems to have faith in the franchise potential, as it was announced in April that the studio was already planning a third installment with Jon Chu coming back to direct. If nothing else, hopefully we will get some more alternate titles for Now You See Me 3 from Fran Hoepfner. Be sure to check out all 27 of her tweets below.

Just yesterday, Legendary released an extended TV trailer for Warcraft. Today, we get a :30 TV spot, and it delivers even more action-packed footage. This will either be one of this summer's biggest hits, or a substantial bomb that could devastate video game fans awaiting more adaptations at the movie theater. A lot is riding on Warcraft. And the latest trailer promises an epic fantasy blockbuster that is sure to thrill genre fans. But will the rest of America be buying that ticket?

Warcraft has a good shot at become the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time. The competition is fairly lax, though. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider currently holds the record with $131.1 million, and this movie debuted way back in 2001. If Warcraft is a hit, it could pave the way for other highly-anticipated movies such as Assassin's Creed, starring Michael Fassbender, and Splinter Cell, which has Tom Hardy set to star.

2016 could end up being the year that proves movies based on video games can actually succeed. As of now, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider is the only video game adaptation that has made more than $100 million domestic, but that may change with the June 10 release of Warcraft. I thought Now You See Me was mostly fine, but I was annoyed by what I considered to be an excessive use of CGI in most of the magic tricks. Unfortunately, this brand new trailer for Now You See Me 2 looks like it's going all in on the CGI magic. It does have a solid cast, though, including returning actors Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Mark Ruffalo, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Caine, along with new-to-this-franchise talent like Lizzy Caplan (whose character replaces Isla Fisher's) and Daniel Radcliffe, so maybe the sheer likability of this cast will be able to make up the CG tricks and illusions. I'm sure there were plenty of people who actually liked those illusions the first time around and don't share my complaint, and if they dug the first one, they'll probably dig this one as well. Former UK and Ireland production executive talks growing international ties and incoming projects at Swedish funding body.

Veteran UK and Ireland production executive Simon Perry has been settled in Goteborg for eight months as head of production at Film Vast (formerly Film i Vast), the regional film fund of Western Sweden.

Perry, who worked at British Screen and the Irish Film Board before heading Ace in Paris, replaced Swedish producer Jessica Ask, who joined production outfit Anagram Film & TV.

Film Vast has an annual budget of $11.5m (Sek 93m) and is the largest public funder in the country after the Swedish Film Institute (Sfi).

“My being here helps the balance between Swedish projects and international projects,” Perry told Screen.

“I have more reach into the international market than my predecessor. The international side of the work has been going well.”

Several notable projects from the UK are headed to work in the region.

While the sequel to the 2013's Now You See Me won't be hitting big screens until Summer 2016, a third movie is already on the cards. The sequel, called Now You See Me 2: The Second Act, will see Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson and Dave Franco team up again (Isla Fisher won't be back) as The Four Horsemen, who are master illusionists and thieves all rolled into one. Jay Chou, Lizzy Caplan and Daniel Radcliffe are also on board for the sequel and presumably much of the cast will return for a third outing. Lionsgate boss Jon Feltheimer was talking up the company's earning profile with a bunch of analysts and announced the third outing. We have to be honest, we didn't see that one coming, but the original was throughly enjoyable and as long as they don't tinker with the successful formula too much, then bring it on!

Now You See Me 2 isn't due until next year - but plans are afoot for Now You See Me 3...

But there's a sporting chance her Now You See Me days are not over. Lionsgate boss Jon Feltheimer has revealed that the firm is already in the early planning stages for Now You See Me 3, and Fisher may well thus return in that way.

From humble sleeper hit to bona fide series, the story behind Lionsgate’s Now You See Me franchise has been one riddled with success, and even though The Second Act isn’t set to slink into theaters until 2016, the studio has went one step further to greenlight a third installment in the crime caper franchise.

Speaking at an earnings call earlier today, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer confirmed that the studio has entered the “early planning” stage in relation to the threequel, and a Now You See Me 3 dovetails with the company’s plan to double down on bankable franchises.
