At this point, the NCIS franchise has had a long and successful run on TV screens, lasting over twenty years.
It’s hard to believe that it started as a spinoff of Jag because it has become much bigger than its predecessor, becoming one of TV’s most bankable franchises.
Despite the shocking cancellations of NCIS: Hawai’i, NCIS: Los Angeles, and NCIS: New Orleans, CBS still devotes three hours of its schedule to the NCIS universe.

NCIS lost a big part of what made it so great when Tony (Michael Weatherly) and Ziva’s (Cote de Pablo) departed, several years apart.
Tiva was the lifeblood of the CBS hit for so many years, but I couldn’t help but feel unsettled by how they were hastily brought back together off-screen.
Ziva and Tony finally got their happily-ever-after in NCIS Season 17, which brought Ziva’s comeback to a rushed conclusion.
(Marcell Piti/Paramount+)
Tony had actually walked away from the team almost four years earlier, so now that we know NCIS: Tony & Ziva is in the final stages of production, it feels like we’re in an alternate universe.
Many NCIS fans have dreamed of it for years, and now that it’s finally happening, I’m starting to get the feeling that it will be a big disaster.

After being on air for over two decades, NCIS is still going strong, despite the change of the mantle of the lead cast. Original members like Mark Harmon and Michael Weatherly are no longer a part of the parent show, while the latter is set to receive his own spin-off alongside Cote de Pablo's Ziva. However, during the latest season of NCIS, longtime fans of the franchise will be treated to another familiar face from a beloved spin-off series that was canceled a few years back.

When "NCIS" debuted in 2003 (as a spinoff of "Jag"), no one could've predicted it would become one of the most successful franchises on television. Sure, it had a shot at longevity being a law enforcement procedural at a network, CBS, that knew how to develop them (as evidenced from their expanding "CSI" brand). But a series that lasted 23 seasons (and counting) while spawning six spinoffs (to date)? Not even series creators Donald P. Bellisario and Don McGill could've seen this coming.
22 years later, the "NCIS" franchise is on the cusp of introducing what might be its most highly anticipated new series thus far. Even if you're only a casual "NCIS" fan, you know all about Senior Field Agent Tony Dinozzo and Special Agent Ziva David. As portrayed by Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo, the "NCIS" duo, called "Tiva" by fans, struck up a flirtatious working relationship which, in classic television will-they-or-won't-they fashion,...

NCIS spoilers and updates tease the show has already had many surprises, however, cast member Brian Dietzen (Dr. Jimmy Palmer) says things are about to improve even more. In the last episode, the show featured guest star Erinn Hayes as Wendy Hill-Dietzen found this exciting, but he mentioned that the next guest will be even more impressive.

Dietzen mentioned that fans would be very excited, as he shared some details about the next episode. While Erinn Hayes was a nice guest star, not many fans were familiar with her.
However, Dietzen hinted that a future guest would be a much bigger surprise. He revealed that this person is from the show’s history and promised it would be amazing (according to TV Insider).

Of all the procedural crime shows that have had an impact on pop culture, CSI and NCIS have to be at the very top of the list. Both series have managed to keep their audiences hooked and a part of their ever-growing fandom since their debut. Considering the shelf life of a show these days, that has to be a feat in itself.

However, the success of NCIS is not entirely to the credit of its fan investment and the scriptwriters coming up with innovative storylines. The character chemistry plays a huge role in making the show’s cast instantly feel like family – to each other and to the fans. As glamorous as working in Hollywood often sounds, it sometimes seems like it would actually be a nightmare. If you get really famous, paparazzi and fans follow you around and critique your every move. If you don't get famous, you spend years trying to earn enough roles to keep your SAG card without doing work that's demeaning or stereotyping. The easiest level of fame seems to be working on network TV, where the paychecks improve over time, your shows sometimes last for over a decade, and people know you but don't put you on tabloid covers every week. But even that career track can be a minefield: network shows can shoot dangerously long hours, and even the most standardized Hollywood sets have intense, messy power structures that can allow for some loaded interactions that wouldn't fly at, say, an office job.

NCIS: Origins is on a long winter hiatus.
The new NCIS prequel took a break in early February, but won’t return for a while due to the number of first-season episodes.
CBS only ordered 18 episodes for NCIS: Origins Season 1, meaning they can’t show new content every week.
But even with a low number of first-season episodes, NCIS: Origins has done well with its Monday night ratings.
Having NCIS as a lead-in is a huge deal, but Origins is bringing in millions of viewers in the 10/9c timeslot.
CBS likes the outlook and has already ordered NCIS: Origins Season 2.
When is the NCIS: Origins return date?
New commercials are airing on CBS that finally shed light on when we can enjoy new episodes of NCIS: Origins.
The return date for NCIS: Origins is Monday, March 24. The new installment airs at 10/9c that evening.

NCIS fans may be disappointed to learn that there is no new episode on Monday, February 17.
CBS is giving the NCIS dramas a Monday night break, and there will be no new NCIS: Origins episode airing either.
President’s Day will feature a repeat episode of NCIS at 9/8c and then an episode of Watson in the NCIS: Origins time slot at 10/9c.
There aren’t enough episodes to air a new one every week, so breaks like this have become the custom for network television.
Fear not, though, as (many) more new NCIS episodes will air this winter and spring on CBS.
Fans can stream the first 12 episodes from this season on Paramount+ in the downtime.
When is the new episode of NCIS Season 22?
It’s a short wait for the next new NCIS episode.

Do you have roughly 1,000 hours to spare and a passion for stalwart procedural crime dramas? Great news: you can start watching every episode of "NCIS" and its multitude of spinoffs now and be finished with the show sometime before the next decade! Seriously, though, the long-running, incredibly popular series has, by this point, garnered enough spinoffs, prequels, and sequels to help keep the lights on at CBS for a long, long time.
In the past two years alone, two "NCIS" spin-offs have premiered, one has been greenlit, and another has gone to the big TV graveyard in the sky. It's a lot to keep track of, but luckily, the show's chronology is pretty straightforward. With the exception of a new prequel, all seven "NCIS"-adjacent shows take place in the present day in chronological order, although crossover events still make any watch-through complicated. If you are in the market for a marathon binge-watch,...

"NCIS" has been a regular fixture on TV screens since 2003, and several actors have come and gone in that time. Of course, some of the departures have been surprising, with franchise mainstay Mark Harmon leaving "NCIS" because he wanted an easier schedule and more time to focus on other projects. Elsewhere, Pauley Perrette vowed to never act again after parting ways with the series due to on-set bullying. As for Michael Weatherly -- well, he was tired of playing NCIS Senior Field Agent Anthony Dinozzo after 15 seasons.
"It came about at the right time. I was burnt out by 'NCIS' and I was ready for a new challenge," Weatherly explained during the Television Critics Association's summer press tour in 2016 (as covered by The Hollywood Reporter). The hour-long procedural has long been one of network television's go-to genres. When done effectively, they can last for decades and launch multiple spin-offs that make a gazillion dollars for creatives and suits alike. What's the secret to the crafting of a long-running procedural? In the case of the broadcast war horse known as "Law & Order," it's to hit on a unique narrative format (i.e. the criminal justice system viewed from the street and court levels), and hit big on every casting choice. For shows as unabashedly formulaic as CBS' "NCIS," it's good enough to hit big-ish on every casting choice, and get slotted into a favorable spot on the broadcast schedule.

Walking away from NCIS after over a decade? Yeah, that’s not the kind of move you make on a whim. Michael Weatherly knew he had a big decision on his hands, so he did what any logical person would — he went straight to Dr. Phil for some real talk. Because let’s be honest, leaving behind Tony Dinozzo to jump into a brand-new CBS show wasn’t exactly a no-brainer.

Weatherly had a couple of burning questions before diving into Bull, and if anyone knows how to break things down, it’s TV’s favorite therapist. Safe to say, Dr. Phil’s advice played a part in Weatherly’s next big chapter.

Even though NCIS is a spinoff of Jag, the series has grown to become its own franchise. The lineup of ongoing series includes NCIS: Origins and NCIS: Sydney, with NCIS: Tony & Ziva coming soon. NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, and NCIS: Hawai'i were unfortunately canceled as the budget for shooting in some of these locales became too costly for Paramount Global. A spinoff like NCIS: Sydney works because it's set so far away from NCIS that it can feel like its own world, but also appeals to the NCIS fandom with references to characters like Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and Director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll). NCIS: Origins and NCIS: Tony & Ziva immediately have audiences hooked by their promises of seeing beloved characters return in new scenarios.

NCIS has been one of the biggest success stories in TV history, but like the countless other long-running shows still on the air, it’s showing its age.
The CBS procedural has slumped to around 5.2 million viewers and a 0.36 rating among adults 18-49 this season.
That number means it ranks seventh out of the 16 scripted series the network has scheduled this season.
(Photo: Robert Voets/CBS)
With a week of DVR factored in, NCIS Season 22’s numbers rise to 7.6 million viewers and a 0.52 rating, but the show is off over 20% compared to last year.
That means that there’s a genuine possibility that CBS could be considering putting the mothership out to pasture.
Twenty-two seasons is a milestone few shows ever reach, but it wouldn’t have been possible without devoted fans watching for so long.

According to TVLine, CBS has postponed the NCIS: Sydney season opener by a week, moving the episode from Jan. 31 to Feb. 7. The delay is to free up a slot on Jan. 31 so that CBS can air a soon-to-be-announced special. CBS' NCIS has had its fair share of couples that people love to watch, but none more so than Tony Dinozzo (Michael Weatherly) and Ziva David (Cote de Pablo). An Israeli citizen originally on loan to NCIS from Mossad, Israel's national intelligence agency, Ziva became an integral part of the NCIS team, and her connection to Dinozzo was easy to see from the beginning. Over their eight full seasons on the show together, Tony and Ziva's relationship only got stronger. When Ziva left NCIS to return to Israel in Season 11, Episode 2, "Past, Present, and Future," she and Tony finally addressed their mostly unspoken love for one another.
Two years later, under the impression that Ziva was dead, Tony resigned from NCIS to raise their daughter, Tali, in Season 13, Episode 24, "Family First." In February 2024, Deadline announced that Paramount+ had 10 episodes of an NCIS spinoff centered around Tony and Ziva, called NCIS: Tony and Ziva.

One thing fans couldn’t quite get over was Michael Weatherly’s departure from NCIS. His exit left a big hole, but despite leaving the show, he is still however deeply connected to the cast. So much so that during an interview, this incredible bond was spotlighted when Emily Wickersham, out of the blue, called him up while he was actually in the midst of discussing the NCIS family.

The unexpected call thus went on to show how strong the cast’s connection remains, even after Weatherly’s departure. It’s clear that while his character, Tony Dinozzo, may be gone, the friendship and the camaraderie behind the scenes are as strong as ever.

As the universe of the ever-popular procedural series continues to grow, a new NCIS spinoff, NCIS: Tony & Ziva, is in the works at Paramount+. The NCIS franchise launched in 2003 as a backdoor pilot on Jag, and follows the agents of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service as they solve cases that take place within the United States military system. Over its two decades on the air, NCIS has blossomed into a bona fide TV institution with several successful offshoots.
Even as NCIS climbs past its 20th season, the franchise is reaching a new period of expansion in the 2020s with the announcement of fresh spinoffs. Instead of merely replicating the success of the original series in a new location, the latest spinoffs are more character-driven and even take place in different periods in the show's timeline. The recently announced spinoff NCIS: Origins will chronicle the adventures of young Leroy Gibbs in the early 1990s,...

The "NCIS" franchise has said goodbye to some beloved shows in recent years. In 2023, "NCIS: Los Angeles" ended after 14 seasons and 322 episodes, which is a great run for any TV show. Unfortunately, "NCIS: Hawaii" didn't experience the same longevity, as it was sent to the chopping block after three seasons in 2024. What's more, it never got the chance to deliver an all-time great series finale as no one expected it to be canceled, so it bowed out with a frustrating cliffhanger. So, why did CBS decide to cancel the series?
As documented by Variety, CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach revealed that "NCIS: Hawaii" was canceled for a variety of reasons, with factors such as the Hollywood SAG-AFTRA strike and a desire to freshen things up among them. Here's what she had to say:
"Everything came back [from the Hollywood strikes] really strong, but ultimately we have to look at the cohesiveness of the schedule flow.

NCIS: Origins was a fascinating proposition for NCIS fans. It was the first prequel series in the history of the franchise, and it was an opportunity to bring Leroy Jethro Gibbs back into the fold after he left in NCIS season 19.
It's worked out pretty well so far. Not only have fans responded to the 1991 period setting, and the new cast of characters, but they have embraced Austin Stowell's performance as Gibbs, after Mark Harmon played the role for two decades.

NCIS Season 22 is taking a short break from new episodes. But don’t worry – the show has lots of new content coming this year.
A new season of NCIS debuted in October, marking the 22nd straight year the hit drama has aired in primetime.
Monday nights also feature the new NCIS spin-off, NCIS: Origins. The latest spin-off is set in 1991 and depicts the early days of Leroy Jethro Gibbs and Mike Franks on the job.
Austin Stowell plays a younger Gibbs, the role that was made famous by actor Mark Harmon. The good news is that Harmon is an executive producer and the narrator.
Meanwhile, Gibbs’ former team has been busy at NCIS this fall, with several dramatic episodes playing out at the offices.
Recently, Agent Timothy McGee (played by Sean Murray) was passed over for a promotion, so it’s likely a plot point that will be addressed again.

It’s an exciting day for NCIS: Origins fans. CBS has given the new drama an extended greenlight during its first season.
CBS originally ordered 13 episodes of NCIS: Origins, giving the drama a chance to succeed on Monday nights.
Having NCIS as a lead-in and working with familiar characters (like Young Gibbs and Young Mike Franks) has worked well.
The new show from the NCIS Universe is based in 1991, years before Mark Harmon began playing Gibbs on NCIS.
Sean Harmon’s idea was to do a prequel show, and he serves as an Executive Producer while his dad (Mark) narrates.
Sean played Young Gibbs during flashbacks on NCIS, but Austin Stowell now portrays the younger Leroy Jethro Gibbs on Origins.
CBS extends the first season order on NCIS: Origins
CBS announced that NCIS: Origins has now received a full-season order.
CBS has increased its order from 13 to 18 episodes, picking up additional content for this spring.

NCIS has featured tons of characters over the years, but one particular NCIS character deserved so much better, even 16 years after their death. NCIS is known for its dramatic plotlines and character endings. The show has been on the air for over 20 years and has even recently celebrated its 1000th NCIS episode. Given its long run-time, and myriad character exits, some characters are bound to have more tragic endings than others. Even so, there's one major player who deserved so much better.
Over the past two decades, NCIS has created intense season finales to write characters off the show. Given its dramatic and police procedural nature, it makes sense to move characters around to keep the show exciting. However, some characters receive more upsetting endings than others.

Two fan-favorite NCIS characters return to the franchise in the spinoff NCIS: Tony & Ziva, and its promising timeline should atone for the mistakes the original series made regarding Anthony "Tony" Dinozzo and Ziva David's relationship. The NCIS franchise is continuously expanding (on CBS and Paramount+), and the aforementioned spinoff serves as a blast from the past. As its title suggests, NCIS: Tony & Ziva brings back Michael Weatherly as Tony and Cote de Pablo as Ziva to continue the couple's story on Paramount+. The new show is undoubtedly a gift to fans but also fixes NCIS's past errors.
NCIS: Tony & Ziva doesn't have an official release date, but it is expected to premiere sometime in 2025 on Paramount+. The cast and crew began filming the spinoff's episodes in Budapest in June 2024.
While Tony and Ziva's romance was among the best in the TV show NCIS, their journey didn't exactly have a perfect ending.

Could you imagine someone other than Mark Harmon playing Leroy Jethro Gibbs on the NCIS cast?
No, we aren’t talking about the Young Gibbs we have seen in flashbacks and on NCIS: Origins. We are talking about someone else nabbing the role on NCIS before Harmon got it.
Harmon starred as Gibbs on NCIS from 2003 until 2021. He left the show early in Season 19, and Gibbs was retired to Alaska.
Harmon also appears on NCIS: Origins, serving as the narrator and appearing in scenes where Gibbs writes a memorial about his exploits.
Actor Austin Stowell now plays the Young Gibbs on NCIS: Origin, taking the mantle from Sean Harmon, who had played Young Gibbs in NCIS flashbacks.
NCIS fans continue hoping that Gibbs (played by Harmon) will have a reason to resurface on the primary show in the future.
Who else could have played Gibbs on NCIS?
A fun report...

Fans of the long-running CBS police procedural NCIS were in for a treat when a spin-off several years in the making was finally announced. Years after departing the original series, Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo are back together again for an all-new NCIS adventure. NCIS: Tony & Ziva will center around the pair's adventures across Europe, but details about the series have been minimal. However, new information has come to light, revealing an unexpected twist regarding the show's timeline.
According to Deadline, NCIS: Tony & Ziva will be operating on an entirely different timeline from the original series. Instead of taking place in the present, the spin-off will rewind time to help fill in some gaps for viewers. Fans of NCIS might remember when Ziva was presumed dead, and Tony was left to care for their daughter, whom he was entirely unaware existed. This series will document what happened when...

It was back to basics at this year’s MIPCOM, the world’s leading television market, which wrapped in Cannes this week, with buyers and sellers alike, still reeling from the 2023 Hollywood strikes and a sluggish advertising market, embracing a more conservative approach. The message was clear: the era of high-risk, big-budget productions is giving way to more practical, proven formats, both in scripted and non-scripted programming.
“People are looking for the tried and true,” noted Lisa Kramer, president of international content licensing for Paramount Global Content Distribution, which found eager buyers for their proudly mainstream procedural line-up, which includes the Kathy Bates Matlock reboot, the Elementry-esque medical detective series Watson and two spin-offs of its world-conquering NCIS franchise: the Euro-set NCIS: Tony & Ziva and the prequel series Origins.

Many NCIS fans are anxiously awaiting the return of Michael Weatherly to the series. He will join Cote de Pablo for the spinoff series NCIS: Tony & Ziva on Paramount+ in 2025. Weatherly has also shown off his impressive weight loss as they are shooting the season.
Here is a look at how much weight the actor has lost in anticipation of his big NCIS return.
Michael Weatherly Loses 35 Pounds For NCIS Return
Michael Weatherly knew he would have a lot more running around and action scenes in NCIS: Tony & Ziva than when he was on his last show, the legal drama Bull. As a result, he knew it was time to lose some weight. The results are impressive.

Welcoming a bevy of stars, led by “NCIS'” Cote de Pablo and Michael Weatherly, talking up spinoff “NCIS: Tony & Ziva,” and some big new shows, such as “Rise of the Raven,” a sword and mace epic, Cannes’ Mipcom confab hit its final straits Wednesday evening announcing 10,500 delegates in attendance.
That’s down some 500 from 2023’s edition but still makes Mipcom the biggest TV sales and production market in the world.
And the wheels of business are still turning. “The market is definitely picking up, and deals are being made. All our key buyers were here, although the Asian presence was a bit soft. Mipcom is definitely the biggest fall market for us,” said Helene Aurø, sales and marketing director at REInvent, Scandinavia biggest international TV distributor.
Despite massive attendance, however, the event also registered multiple strains in the TV business sparked by a saturation of shows and investor backlash...

An NCIS: Tony & Ziva sneak peek arrived for fans attending the 2024 MIPCOM. This annual trade show for the television industry happens in Cannes, France.
Former NCIS stars Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo joined Dan Cohen, the head of Paramount Global distribution and Republic Pictures, to tease the new spin-off.
Michael and Cote played NCIS agents Tony Dinozzo and Ziva David. The duo was on-screen together for 10 years, but they have each left NCIS since then.
Cote returned in 2019 for an intense story arc as Leroy Jethro Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) was close to leaving the show. Michael later resurfaced to play Tony during an episode paying homage to Dr. Donald Mallard (played by David McCallum).
Following Michael’s appearance on NCIS Season 21, it was revealed that a new NCIS spin-off had been approved. It is a vehicle for the characters of Tony and Ziva, picking up with the...

New information about NCIS: Tony & Ziva confirms where its events take place in the timeline. While the NCIS franchise continues on network TV with the return of NCIS season 22 and the premiere of NCIS: Origins, it is showing no signs of slowing down soon, with another offshoot in the works. NCIS: Tony & Ziva will be the first series in the universe that will be on a streaming service, as it is set to debut sometime next year on Paramount+. Despite being on a different platform, it remains connected with the bigger NCIS umbrella.
