“We want all new music for…”: Moana 2 Star Auli’i Cravalho Reveals Fate of Songs Cut Out of the Sequel in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Absence
Image
Moana 2 might be able to bank on nostalgia and beautiful animation but fans unanimously agree that it’s missing a huge factor that made the first movie a success. Lil-Manuel Miranda’s songs were the reason audiences of all age groups could connect with the characters in the previous movie.

However, not only did the makers deprive viewers of his presence but pre-recorded songs for the film were also cut. Moana star Auli’i Cravalho spoke about how they had to remove a lot of songs that were recorded for what originally was supposed to be a series. Not only fans but the actress also wishes for a happy ending for those songs she invested a lot of work in.

From animated series to unexpected theatrical release Still from Moana (2016) | Credits: Walt Disney Studios

Moana 2 was initially supposed to be released digitally as an animated series on Disney+. However,...

Beyond ‘Moana’: Auliʻi Cravalho Reflects on Finding Her Way After Disney Princess Stardom
Image
10 years ago, Auliʻi Cravalho was cast in her first professional acting role as a Disney princess. She would also be the studio’s first Polynesian princess (though the character herself insists she’s not technically a princess), marking a huge moment for Aapi representation.

Two years later, “Moana” officially hit theaters and has proven to have some strong sea legs, becoming the most streamed movie on Disney+ last year. It shot Cravalho to fame, but it also provided her with something that most actresses don’t get right away — or, in some cases, ever.

“Starting with an incredible film like ‘Moana’ meant that I could be choosy [about future roles], that I’m afforded the beauty of being picky,” Cravalho revealed to TheWrap.

The actress took full advantage of that opportunity immediately. Between starring in “Moana” and “Moana 2,” now in theaters everywhere, she’s played a teen facing homelessness in “All Together Now,...

Fremantle Takes Global On Netflix’s ‘Penelope’ Series From Mark Duplass & Mel Eslyn
Image
Fremantle has taken global distribution rights on Mark Duplass and Mel Eslyn’s Netflix series Penelope.

The high-end show, which premiered at Sundance, will launch tomorrow on Netflix U.S. but worldwide rights have been up for grabs.

Penelope follows the eponymous lead, played by Megan Stott, a 16-year-old who feels out of place in modern society and is drawn into the unknown wilderness, where she begins to form a new life for herself. Like most teenagers today, Penelope is caught up in the modern world’s technology, pacing and pressure. But something is missing, and things feel off, she can’t quite put it into words. On the surface, her life seems pretty great, while inside, there’s a fierceness that’s been brewing, a calling towards a new way of being.

Alongside Megan Stott, the cast also includes Austin Abrams; Krisha Fairchild and Rhenzy Feliz.

Fremantle is selling outside of the U.S. and the move builds on its strategy to partner on streamer shows that can be sold to other territories. One of its key MIPCOM titles will be Costiera, the Jesse Williams-starring Prime Video Italy series that is currently without a UK or U.S. buyer.

“Penelope is very dear to our hearts and we wouldn’t trust her to just anyone,” said Duplass and Eslyn. “We are grateful to have found partners that understand, support and encourage the story we are trying to tell and the larger conversation we are hoping to inspire.”

Duplass and Eslyn executive produce alongside Jay Duplass and Shuli Harel of Duplass Brothers Productions. Eslyn also directs and serves as showrunner. Fremantle is handling global distribution.

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From Barney Miller
Image
"Barney Miller" may not be one of the most talked-about sitcoms of the '70s these days, but perhaps it should be. The NYPD-set show was in some ways the "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" of its time, a socially conscious, funny series that set its action squarely in the precinct where members of the public came to ask the authorities for help -- or get arrested by them.

Like most shows about cops, it has its inherent biases, and some parts of the show have aged poorly. But "Barney Miller" is also surprisingly progressive at times. As TV historian Matt Baume writes in his queer sitcom history "Hi Honey, I'm Homo," the show broke new ground for gay characters on TV, facing off against network censors to portray New York's Greenwich Village neighborhood (post-Stonewall!) with authenticity and diversity.

Only two seasons of "Barney Miller" are currently available to rent digitally in the U.

Moana's Live-Action Recasting Repeats The Animated Movie's Brilliant Decision
Image
Disney's live-action Moana remake offers Catherine Laga'aia a breakout role, similar to Auli'i Cravalho's introduction in the animated film. Laga'aia's on-screen presence in the live-action adaptation could lead to bigger opportunities in Hollywood. Moana 2 is set for November 2024, followed by the live-action remake in 2026.

The live-action casting for the titular role of Moana repeats the animated film's brilliant decision. In 2015, Disney announced that Auli'i Cravalho would play Moana in the animated film. She was an unknown actress at the time, but Disney does not always cast unknown actors to play lead roles, especially for live-action remakes. Emma Watson has an extremely famous past thanks to Harry Potter, and Disney picked her to play Belle in Beauty and the Beast (2017). Beyonc is one of the world's most well-known performers, and Disney cast her to play Nala in The Lion King (2019) and Mufasa.

Angelina Jolie has played numerous characters spanning decades,...

How Shaboozey Channeled Zach Bryan and Pharrell Williams to Make ‘A Bar Song (Tipsy)’
Image
When Shaboozey was writing “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” he wanted to keep the arrangements sounding as organic as possible. He built the track around J-Kwon’s 2004 hit “Tipsy,” and within an hour, he had his very own ode to raising a glass — with a country twist. The megahit quickly went viral and topped Billboard’s Hot Country Songs Chart, surpassing “Texas Hold ’Em” by Beyoncé. (Shaboozey had actually teamed up with her for two songs on her recent country LP, Cowboy Carter.) Together, they became the first two Black artists to lead that chart back-to-back.

Only A Few Actors Can Say They've Played More Than One Disney Princess On Screen
Image
It's a testament to Disney's branding that mainstream audiences don't necessarily know who directed or starred in some of their better-known movies. Although many have seen the studio's 1950 animated feature "Cinderella," most audiences wouldn't be able to tell you that Ilene Woods played the title character, or that Wilfred Jackson, Hamilton Luske, and Clyde Geronimi directed the film. Disney's "Aladdin" changed that with the casting of Robin Williams as the Genie. And the trend of hiring known screen celebrities, often not voice actors, to sell an animated feature to a broad audience went to a whole other level in the wake of DreamWorks' "Shrek." The advent of the internet also helped certain actresses become known among Disney fans. Nowadays, many adults know the names of the actresses who played characters like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, or Ariel the Mermaid.

By Disney's own selection, there are thirteen "official" Disney Princesses: Snow White,...

Jung Woo-sung Stars in ‘Tell Me That You Love Me,’ Korean Remake of 1990s Japanese Hit – Global Bulletin
Image
Korean Romantic Remake Is 28 Years Better Late Than Never

Leading Korean star Jung Woo-sung (“A Moment to Remember”) will star opposite Shin Hyun-been (“Hospital Playlist”) in “Tell Me That You Love Me,” an original series for Genie TV. The show is a remake of the hit Japanese series of the same name that first aired at Tokyo Broadcasting Systems linear channel in Japan some 28 years ago in 1995.

The new show will upload to Genie’s own streaming service on Nov. 27 and the same day in Japan on Disney+. It will also play on Korean cable channel Ena.

The original series featuring Etsushi Toyokawa and Takako Tokiwa, was written by Kitagawa Eriko and told a slow-burning tale of romance developing between an aspiring young actress and an up-and-coming painter who lost his sense of hearing. Each episode topped the ratings of the previous one, making the show a smash it and a (pre-social media) social phenomenon.

The Power Cast & Character Guide
Image
Warning! Spoilers for The Power!

With The Power’s debut, Amazon Prime’s latest series portrays a varied cast of characters with complex dynamics. One of the most fascinating elements of The Power’s premise is its scope, with electrical abilities developing in many women across the world. To tell such a broad story means balancing the experiences of characters in a variety of cultures and social classes, and as such, the cast of The Power is a diverse one. However, this can be overwhelming to keep up with as the show begins with five main stories right away.

Overall, The Power portrays what happens when women begin to develop electrical powers across the world, leading to a massive power shift around the globe. Specifically, the show documents this shift from a variety of perspectives, including a politician and her daughter in the U.S., a gangster’s daughter in Britain,...

A self-described misfit in the world of people, Raven left home at 15 and headed west to work as a National Park Service ranger. Over time, she earned a Ph.D. in biology and built a house on an isolated plot of land in Montana. Then, a mangy-looking fox began appearing on her property every day at 4:15 pm.

She had never had a regular visitor before, so she placed her camping chair as near to him as she dared and began reading aloud from The Little Prince. Her scientific training had taught her not to anthropomorphize animals, yet as she grew to know Fox,...

Banijay Rights Reveals Asian Market Trends, Atf Slate Highlights
Image
Scripted formats and gameshows are performing strongly in Asia for Banijay Rights, the distribution arm of Banijay.

“Grantchester” is a strong seller and the company licensed dramas such as “The Good Karma Hospital,” “Younger” and European titles locally to partners like Mola TV, says Banijay Rights EVP Asia Rashmi Bajpai. ” ‘Mr. Bean’ is an evergreen property, delighting children and adults alike, while physical gameshows such as ‘Wipeout’ and super-brands like ‘MasterChef’ dominate our sales chart,” Bajpai told Variety.

“On the formats side, big branded shows with proven sponsorship potential that can be shot in controlled environments — such as ‘MasterChef’ and ‘Big Brother’ — and small to medium-scale humorous gameshows with easy to understand game-play like ‘First and Last,’ also do well,” Bajpai added.

After the success of the Tamil-language “Survivor,” hosted by film star Arjun Sarja, in India, Banijay is in discussions to produce more versions.

“This format has been commissioned...

All Together Now by Hope Larson
Image
There’s something deeply pure about a middle-book about middle-schoolers. The characters are in a point of their lives where they’re growing and changing – not still the people they were as kids, and not even the teenagers they will be in another year or two, much less the actual adults they will eventually become – and the story is similarly middle, starting from another book it hopes we’ve already read and handing off at the end to a book the author may not have even planned out yet.

It’s very thematically appropriate, is what I’m saying.

That’s how I think about All Together Now , Hope Larson’s new graphic novel for 2020 and a sequel to 2018’s All Summer Long . It picks up soon after the end of the previous book: Bina is still thirteen, it’s still the same year, and she still wants to write and play music.

‘One Day at a Time’ Alum Justina Machado to Star in Amazon Pilot ‘Horror of Dolores Roach,’ Roxann Dawson to Direct
Image
Amazon has given out a pilot order to the series adaptation of “The Horror of Dolores Roach,” with Justina Machado set to star in the title role.

The project, based on the podcast of the same name, was first announced as being in development at Amazon back in May. Along with Machado’s casting, Roxann Dawson has come onboard to direct the pilot and executive produce.

In the show, “Magic Hands” Dolores Roach (Machado) is released from prison after 16 years and returns to a severely-gentrified Washington Heights with $200 and the clothes on her back. Her boyfriend missing, her family long gone, her apartment now occupied by strangers, Dolores finds respite in the dilapidated storefront Empanada Loca around the corner, the only remnant of her former life.

“The Horror of Dolores Roach” was originally developed as a one-woman show by Aaron Mark with Daphne Rubin-Vega starring. Mark subsequently adapted it into...

Ok Go Debut New Global Collaborative Video Series for ‘All Together Now’
Image
Ok Go has released the first in a series of six music videos that will stitch together footage of people around the world playing the band’s 2020 song “All Together Now.”

The project has its roots in the quarantine creation of “All Together Now,” which the members of Ok Go wrote and recorded at their respective homes after frontman Damian Kulash and his family came down with Covid-19. The band released the song last May, dedicating it to frontline workers. A few months later, a high school choir teacher from...

Oscars: Academy Reveals List Of Films Eligible For Best Picture Race
Image
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday revealed the 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars, which are set to air April 25 live on ABC.

The total number of films is up from last year’s 344 films in contention.

This year’s list was compiled based on tweaked eligibility rules implemented because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has pushed the ceremony to its latest date ever. For this year, feature films had to open by February 28 in a commercial motion picture theater for a seven-day qualifying run in at least one of six metro areas: Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta. Drive-in theaters open nightly were included as qualifying venues, as were films intended for theatrical release but because of the lockdown made available first via streaming, VOD service or other broadcast.

Today’s news comes...

‘Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK 2×06’ Review
Image
Last weeks episode of Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK will go down as one of the most memorable in episodes of Drag Race her-story! It started with all the queens been sent home and forced to quarantine for 7 months which was crazy; we had the return and second elimination of the international cabaret sensation Joe Black; and saw the premiere of one of the most annoyingly catchy songs to ever come for drag race. “U K Hun” by the United Kingdolls has been on loop for me since last week and made it to the #1 downloaded song on iTunes! We technically saw two eliminations last week as Veronica Green tested positive for the virus and so was unable to return to filming but was offered a free pass to next years competition. I recently discovered a video of Veronica Green singing on the BBC singing show “All Together Now...

Oscars Break Another Record With 105 Eligible Songs, But Trent Reznor’s ‘Mank’ Tune Isn’t One of Them
Trent Reznor
This year’s Oscars have set a new record for the largest number of entries ever in the Best Original Song category, but the 105 eligible songs do not include Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ “(If Only You Could) Save Me,” a 1930s-style big band song from “Mank” that was recently nominated for the second annual Society of Composers and Lyricists Awards.

The song is heard briefly coming from a radio in the background of one scene and plays for only about 40 seconds. Academy rules require “a clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody,” and the song was judged to not fulfill that requirement.

Other songs that didn’t make the list, although they were thought to be in the running, include “Uh Oh” from “Promising Young Woman” and “Boss Bitch” from “Birds of Prey.” Even without those, the list of eligible songs tops 100 for the first time...

Oscars Best Picture Screening Room for Voters Hits 200 Movies – But Not ‘Tenet’
Justin Timberlake and Ryder Allen in Palmer (2021)
The number of films available to Oscar voters in a screening room devoted to the Best Picture category hit the 200 mark on Wednesday, which means that $2.5 million has entered the Academy coffers from films paying $12,500 each to be represented in the screening room.

The members-only Academy Screening Room hit the milestone with the addition of more than a dozen movies this week, including Fisher Stevens’ “Palmer,” Lee Daniels’ “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” John Lee Hancock’s “The Little Things,” the Russo brothers’ “Cherry,” Josh Trank’s “Capone,” the documentary “Coup 53,” the Studio Ghibli animated film “Earwig and the Witch,” the international films “Funny Boy” and “Bacarau” (neither eligible in the Oscars’ Best International Feature Film category) and some off-the-wall selections, including “Snake White – Love Endures” and “Soorarai Pottru.”

Other late additions to the screening room have included “Minari,” “Promising Young Woman,” “The White Tiger” and “Cherry,” which were not added until January.

John C. Reilly, Fred Armisen, and Tim Heidecker in Moonbase 8 (2020)
Moonbase 8 Release Date and Trailer for Showtime Astronaut Comedy
John C. Reilly, Fred Armisen, and Tim Heidecker in Moonbase 8 (2020)
Moonbase 8 might, by virtue of its title, evoke imagery from unintentionally-funny early-post-Star Wars cash-in sci-fi from a bell-bottoms-brandishing yesteryear such as space base farce Saturn 3, but the comedy is assuredly intentional in the case of the Showtime series, which has just released its full trailer and a November release date.

Intriguingly, Moonbase 8 is a six-episode half-hour astronaut comedy series that’s not even set in space, instead set in the final frontier of the Arizona desert, following the training exploits of bumbling NASA wannabees played by an auspicious comedy collective in John C. Reilly, Fred Armisen and Tim Heidecker. The onscreen comedic triumvirate also serve as co-creators along with Jonathan Krisel, who co-created and wrote for Armisen’s Sundance Channel TV vehicle, Portlandia and did the same for FX Zach Galifianakis comedy Baskets.

On that note, check out the full trailer for Showtime’s Moonbase 8 just below.

The Best Films And Performances Of The First Two Thirds Of 2020
Crshd (2019)
Welcome to September, ladies and gentlemen. With the summer coming to and end, the fall almost upon us, and the Covid-19 pandemic still very much impacting the industry, much is still up in the air. Such is life with the coronavirus holding up much of the film industry. As fitting this weird year, not much has changed since July when I looked at the best of the first half of the year. Mostly, this just means the best is (hopefully) still to come here. We shall see, but just keep in mind that the midpoint of 2020 has been somewhat of a holding pattern, for obvious reasons. Let’s get right down to it. Below you’ll find my top ten of the year so far, along with my awards for the first two thirds of 2020. Here you go folks, and enjoy: 10. Crshd 9. The Outpost 8. ‘Bill & Ted Face the Music’ Tops Multiple VOD Charts as Chadwick Boseman Films Soar
Image
The Premium VOD debut of United Artists’ “Bill & Ted Face the Music” topped charts from the moment it debuted August 28. As a mid-budget title that’s thriving at $19.99, it could be as important as “Tenet” in determining the shape of movie distribution. “Bill & Ted” didn’t see much theatrical play, but given its day-and-date debut it also didn’t have the option. About 1,000 independent theaters did play the title, where by our estimate it grossed around $1.1 million, or around $1,000 per theater.

That’s not a lot, but it’s better than Searchlight’s theater-only flop “The Personal History of David Copperfield.” Based on those two performances, UA made the right move: Searchlight devoted marketing spend to a disappointheatrical release that now must wait until November before it can play VOD.

“Bill & Ted” was first on all three possible charts. “Fatima” (Picturehouse), the other new PVOD entry, appeared on two.
