The Usual Suspects Ending Explained: Why Keyser Söze Twist Is Still Timeless After 30 Years
Image
The Usual Suspects isn’t just a crime thriller—it’s a twisted mind game that still leaves viewers gasping even 30 years later. Directed by Bryan Singer and written by Christopher McQuarrie, this 1995 neo-noir film is packed with mystery, mind-bending storytelling, and one of the greatest plot twists in movie history.

You think you know exactly what’s going on, until you don’t. The story follows five criminals brought together for a police lineup. But what starts as a simple heist turns into something much deeper, darker, and more confusing, especially when a mythical crime lord named Keyser Söze enters the picture.

The film unfolds through the narrative of Roger “Verbal” Kint, played by Kevin Spacey in an Oscar-winning performance. As his character recounts the events leading up to a fiery massacre on a boat, the audience—just like the detective questioning him—is forced to piece together the puzzle.

Disgraced Actor Kevin Spacey Set To Star In Thriller ‘The Awakening’ In Comeback After ‘Cancellation’
Image
Disgraced actor Kevin Spacey has been cast in the upcoming conspiracy thriller, The Awakening, after having faced career-threatening sexual assault charges over recent years.

Just last year, Spacey was accused of sexually assaulting former actor Ruari Cannon in June 2013, according to a testimony by Cannon the night before the premiere of Spacey’s documentary, Spacey Unmasked. Cannon claimed that their interaction at The Savoy Hotel was normal until Spacey reached into Cannon’s pants without consent and touched his buttocks.

This is one of many accusations made against the Usual Suspects star. More individuals have claimed that they were touched inappropriately by Spacey when they were teenagers, including a castmate on House of Cards. In total, Spacey has been accused of nine separate sexual assault charges.

Spacey appeared in court in July 2023 and was acquitted of all charges. The actor has denied these allegations publicly. He accused Britain’s Channel 4...

Image
Tom Cruise has been working in the film industry since the 1980s and over time there have been few filmmakers who have remained unimpressed with his charm and acting genius. Cruise’s enduring charisma and versatility make him a dream collaborator for many directors.

Well, his long-time collaborator and Oscar-winning director, Christopher McQuarrie is one such director, who recently revealed he was ready to walk out the door of the film industry until Cruise made him stay.

‘Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning’ instant Oscar predictions
Image
In the teaser for Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, Henry Czerny's CIA Director Eugene Kittridge lays out the stakes of the action series' ultimate entry.

"Everything you were, everything you've done, has come to this."

Could he be talking about the achievement that has eluded Tom Cruise and company across the franchise's eight entries — Oscar glory?

Reviews for Final Reckoning came in somewhat shy of the high highs that the series has seen in its later outings, under the stewardship of director Christopher McQuarrie (an Oscar winner for his Usual Suspects screenplay). But there's no denying the goodwill that the films have engendered among movie fans, who have come to identify the franchise as one of the last bastions of old-fashioned Hollywood blockbuster-making.

With Final Reckoning opening in theaters this weekend, let's take a look at Mission's awards history and which categories it could potentially repel onto the...

To celebrate the Limited Edition 4K Uhd release of The Usual Suspects, we are giving away a 4K Uhd to a lucky winner!

The Usual Suspects won two Academy Awards and is still regarded as one of the greatest crime films ever made.

After a brutal massacre on a cargo ship off the coast of Los Angeles leaves 27 men dead, Special Agent Dave Kujan (Chazz Palminteri) interrogates one of the only two survivors, small-time con artist Verbal Kint (Kevin Spacey). During the interview, Kint tells Kujan of how he was recruited by the fearsome crime lord Keyser Söze to commit a series of daring heists with four other crooked misfits: Dean Keaton (Gabriel Byrne), Mike McManus (Stephen Baldwin), Fred Fenster (Benicio del Toro) and Todd Hockey (Kevin Pollak). But as Kint’s account of the events leading up to the massacre becomes more convoluted, Kujan becomes increasingly sceptical and determined...

30 Years Later, The Usual Suspects Still Has One Of The Greatest Twists In Movie History (& It Gets Better Every Time You Watch It)
Image
The Usual Suspects has stood the test of time for having one of the greatest thriller twists in movie history. The 1995 crime movie starred some of the best actors at that time, including Gabriel Byrne, Pete Postlethwaite, and Kevin Spacey. The premise for the movie was "five guys who meet in a police line-up," but the story centers on a heist run from afar by a legendary crime lord, who turns out to be nearer than he appeared. The ending of The Usual Suspects contains an elaborate twist that almost eclipses the rest of the movie.

In The Usual Suspects, the timid and limping Roger "Verbal" Kint, played by Kevin Spacey, is telling the story to Agent Dave Kujan. Verbal's story is compelling and detailed, as he explains how each of the men had wronged the Turkish crime boss, Keyser Söze. Once Verbal has finished, Kujan allows him to...

All Of Gibbs' Rules In NCIS (& What They Mean)
Image
Understanding all of Gibbs' rules in NCIS and what they mean is essential to knowing Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Mark Harmon played the character for nearly two decades on the series, using the rules to help establish his character and how the Naval Criminal Investigative Service operated. Gibbs' rules kick off the series in NCIS season 1, episode 1, "Yankee White," one of the best episodes of NCIS. The Special Agent-in-Charge uses them to give Sasha Alexander's newly minted Caitlin "Kate" Todd the lay of the land when investigating aboard Air Force One.

Gibbs' rules were necessary for the original Major Case Response Team leader in NCIS. The rules were the quickest way for Gibbs to relay critical information in the shortest time. While many of Gibbs' rules dictate crime scene management, later rules feel more personal. In NCIS season 3, Gibbs said he had about 50 rules, but more of Gibbs' rules were...

Marvel Studios has confirmed the existence of 12 Presidents of the United States in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, each having a huge impact on the franchise. Let’s Rank the Quentin Tarantino Knockoffs of the ’90s
Image
Quentin Tarantino‘s 1994 sophomore feature Pulp Fiction wasn’t just a major break out hit. It changed the face of cinema in the 1990s, both by helping bring attention to indie and foreign films, and by inspiring a host imitators. When audiences lined up to watch Tarantino’s bloody, whip-smart movie, studios rushed to fill theaters and video stores with more stories about loquacious hitmen, monologuing bank robbers, and foul-mouthed gun molls.

In most cases, these knockoffs provided cheap thrills, heavy on the violence and pop-cultural references but low on Tarantino’s sense of composition and ear for unique dialogue. In the best cases, Pulp Fiction‘s success made way for other great movies to get made, oddball films ignored by the studios until Tarantino convinced them that they could make money.

Here are the fifteen best Pulp Fiction influenced movies of the 1990s, those that stand on their own...

Kevin Spacey used to be one of the most celebrated actors in Hollywood before the s-xual misconduct allegations roped him in a web that has had him maintaining a much lower profile than ever before. 9 Movies That Start With A Great Plot Twist
Image
Some films use twist openings to establish an unexpected tone and subvert audience expectations, like in Scream and The Suicide Squad. Early plot twists can create intense connections with the audience by quickly getting them out of their comfort zone, like in Fresh and The Dark Knight. Twist openings can change the direction of the story and raise the stakes, like in 1917 and Downsizing. They can also lay the foundation for multiple realities and emotional depth, like in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and Moon.

A good twist in a film can change the way the entire is viewed and cause audiences to reflect on what happened prior, but on occasion, a twist at the start can make an even bigger impact. Many filmmakers who employ the technique of a twist have created highly influential and impactful films. The Usual Suspects, The Prestige, and Fight Club's twist endings all caused...

International Insider: SAG-AFTRA Strike Looms; Kevin Spacey Trial Begins; Taormina Tales
Image
Welcome back, Insiders. Jesse Whittock with you this week to look back on the last seven days in international film and TV. Here we go. Also, sign up for the Insider newsletter here.

SAG-AFTRA Strike Looms

Clock’s ticking: Time is running out for SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP to strike a new deal and avoid an actors strike before the current contract runs out today, though our U.S. colleagues Dominic Patten and Anthony D’Alessandro revealed on Wednesday talks may extend to next week or even later. Fingers remain crossed at these signs of progress. Negotiations are at a critical stage, with more than 1,000 actors, including Jennifer Lawrence and Meryl Streep, signing a letter stating they are “prepared to strike.” In Europe, producers, studios, networks and actors have been peering pensively across the pond. Unions in English-speaking countries appear less prepared to act in solidarity with their U.S.

Sharper Review
Image
Plot: Unfolds within the secrets of New York City, from the penthouses of Fifth Avenue to the shadowy corners of Queens. Motivations are suspect and expectations are turned upside down when nothing is as it seems.

Review: Con artists and thieves always make for intriguing movie plots. With a long legacy of such films to choose from, from classic noir to contemporary indies, filmmakers have to rely on solid casting and unique twists to try and entice audiences. The new film Sharper, starring a small cast of talented performers, almost delivers on both despite getting a bit too confident in a story that ends up being more familiar than the trailers suggest. But, thanks to five solid performances from the ensemble cast, Benjamin Caron’s twisty thriller is good enough to warrant some attention this weekend. After a brief theatrical run, Sharper will premiere on AppleTV+, giving it even more...

The 2023 Oscar Nomination For Top Gun: Maverick's Screenplay Recognizes The Film's Strengths
Image
With the 2023 Oscar nominations announced today, "Top Gun: Maverick" is flying high with six nominations including Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay, Best Sound, Film Editing, Best Visual Effects and, finally, Best Original Song for the Lady Gaga's "Hold My Hand." Seeing how the long awaited sequel almost single-handedly brought the moviegoing public back to theaters after the pandemic, the recognition today for Best Picture didn't seem to surprise that many people. Not only is it one of the best sequels ever made, it's grossed almost 1.5 billion at the box office. That kind of mammoth success doesn't usually translate to Oscar gold, but Tom Cruise and company delivered a surprisingly emotional follow-up that doesn't just thrill the audience with aerial acrobatics. It actually has heart.

One nomination that is a little unexpected is Adapted Screenplay. At first glance, the script doesn't seem in concert with the dialogue-heavy screenplays that usually prick up the ears of voters.

‘The Crown’s’ James Murray on Playing Disgraced Prince Andrew: ‘I Enjoy Polarizing Roles’
Image
Among the many controversies that gripped the British Royal Family during the 1990s was one that would only come to light almost two decades later, when Prince Andrew’s friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his partner Ghislaine Maxwell (who was convicted of sex trafficking last December) was eventually exposed in the press.

The scandal, which metastasized after Prince Andrew was sued in a civil court for sexual assault by Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein’s victims, destroyed his public standing. His mother, Queen Elizabeth II, stripped him of his many patronages and military titles before she died and, despite denying any wrongdoing and ultimately settling with Giuffre, Andrew is still effectively banished from public life.

But for James Murray, who plays Prince Andrew in Season 5 of “The Crown,” there was no apprehension about stepping into the disgraced royal’s buffed shoes. “My thoughts were, ‘Great, fantastic,’” Murray tells Variety.

Fremantle’s Fiction Valley Ties With ‘Dirty Lines’ Creator Pieter Bart Korthuis

Fremantle label Fiction Valley has struck a three-year deal with Netflix’s Dirty Lines creator and showrunner Pieter Bart Korthuis. The agreement will see Fiction Valley, which is run by Annemike van Vliet, develop and produce a slate of scripted drama series from Korthuis, one of Holland’s leading creatives. The pair have already tied on Dirty Lines, Netflix’s series about late-1980s Amsterdam and Korthuis’ other work includes political series The Year of Fortuyn and Penoza. Fiction Valley’s credits include Suspects and a remake of The A-Word. “Pieter’s extraordinary talent as creator, writer, director and showrunner is unique and beyond limits,” said van Vliet. Striking talent deals and acquiring labels is a key plank of Fremantle’s strategy at the moment and the group signed a landmark deal with Angelina Jolie earlier this year.

Scary Movie Star Reveals His Idea For A Doofy Spinoff
Image
When Scream was released in 1996, it ushered in a new appreciation for slasher flicks, but also had the unfortunate and unforeseen side effect of bringing about a resurgence of parody films following the success of Scary Movie. Now, one of the latter’s stars, Dave Sheridan, has expressed interest in returning in a series of shorts offering up further lampooning.

Sheridan played Doofy Gilmore, a send-up of Scream’s Dewey Riley, the pic from which, alongside I Know What You Did Last Summer, the bulk of the inspiration was taken. True to his name, throughout the movie, Doofy is portrayed as having severe learning difficulties, and at the end (spoilers for a 20-year-old film), in a recreation of the climax of The Usual Suspects, it’s shown that he was faking his disability the whole time and is in fact the killer.

Many of the principal actors, regardless of whether...

Netflix Orders Dutch Series ‘Dirty Lines,’ About Adult Phone Lines Firm
Image
Netflix has ordered Dutch original series “Dirty Lines,” about the rise of erotic phone lines in the late 80s.

The screenplay, inspired by Fred Saueressig’s book “06-Cowboys,” is written by Pieter Bart Korthuis and produced by Amsterdam-based production company Fiction Valley.

The series tells the story of young businessman Frank Stigter. After several unsuccessful attempts to start his own business, Frank sees his chance when the national telephone company Ptt introduces premium-rate numbers. With the help of his brother and sister and some dubious investors, he starts the first telecom sex company in Europe. What starts as a clumsy improvized experiment in their parents’ garage, rapidly develops into a multi-million dollar industry.

A statement from Netflix explains the background: “Set at the end of the Cold War, the series inspires a young generation to shake off the doomsday thinking of the ‘80s and focus on how to celebrate life to its fullest.

Hazel Douglas obituary
Actor whose best known role in a seven-decade career came in a Harry Potter film in her 80s

The actor Hazel Douglas, who has died aged 92, landed her most prominent role in her 80s, when she joined the starry cast of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 (2010), as Bathilda Bagshot, the author of A History of Magic, a textbook used at Hogwarts school, and great-aunt of the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. And there were more performances to come in a stage and screen career that altogether spanned seven decades.

In the ITV series Vicious, Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi played Freddie and Stuart, a longstanding and quarrelsome couple. Hazel joined them in 2013 as Mildred, Stuart’s no-nonsense mother, failing to understand the relationship between the two men. In Elephants Can Remember, an episode of Agatha Christie’s Poirot from the same year with David Suchet, Zoë Wanamaker and Greta Scacchi,...

Cold Feet: Where are the cast of ITV's hit series now?
Is ITV really going to bring back Cold Feet?

That's the rumour, with the broadcaster apparently looking to plug the Downton-shaped hole in its schedule with a revival of the popular comedy-drama.

If it's true, they'll have a job bringing the cast back together - some have gone on to be huge telly and film stars, while others have stepped out of the spotlight entirely...

James Nesbitt

Nesbitt's carefree lothario Adam Williams met his match in Helen Baxendale's Rachel - the couple overcame infidelity and infertility but were denied lasting happiness when Rachel was killed in a traffic accident.

Since Cold Feet wrapped, Nesbitt has become one of British television's most in-demand leading men.

He fronted BBC One's gritty cop series Murphy's Law from 2003-07, led Steven Moffat's supernatural thriller Jekyll - also in 2007 - and played the title character in ITV's short-lived medical drama Monroe (2011-12).

Of late,...

All 27 stars of Skins: Whatever happened to E4's teen tearaways?
Here's one of those 'This'll make you feel old' factoids - it's two years since the last ever episode of Skins aired.

E4's groundbreaking hormone-fest wrapped up on August 5, 2013 - with an older Cook (Jack O'Connell) heading off into an uncertain future at the close of 'Rise (Part Two)'.

Cook was but one of 27 major characters featured on Skins across three 'Generations' - in a total of 61 episodes, split into seven series. But where are the teen tearaways of Roundview College now?

Generation One

1. Nicholas Hoult

Hoult played Tony Stonem - the pre-eminent bad boy of Skins - across its first two series. Later badly hurt in a traffic accident and forced to rely on others, Tony had mellowed by his final episodes.

Now aged 25, Hoult has become a bona-fide Hollywood star with roles in this year's Mad Max: Fury Road and the much-anticipated book adaptations Dark Places and Kill Your Friends.

Suspects: Paul Marquess on series 3 and the future of unscripted TV
Having made "quite a few cop shows" in his time, Paul Marquess (The Bill, Crime Stories, Hollyoaks) knew he had to do something different with Channel 5's Suspects.

Produced without a traditional script, the drama is semi-improvised, with its stars - Fay Ripley, Damien Molony and Clare-Hope Ashitey - working instead from a detailed story document.

Ahead of the launch of its third series, Marquess spoke to Digital Spy about the challenges of producing a show like Suspects and why he and his production team at Newman Street are looking to make more shows in the same format.

What can viewers expect from the third series of Suspects?

"We've got four really strong episodes. The first one that's up features a great guest performance from Emmett Scanlan - really strong - and then the second one... it may well be my favourite episode.

"It's really dark and to me it's like the uber-Suspects episode.
