Joey Chestnut set another hot dog-eating world record on Labor Day against his rival, Takeru Kobayashi. The competitors faced off for the first time in 14 years for Netflix’s “Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef” special, where Chestnut took down 83 hot dogs while Kobayashi finished 66.

Chestnut bested himself on Monday, after most recently setting the world record in 2021 when he ate 76 hot dogs in 10 minutes. This time around, he hit the 76-sausage mark after only eight minutes and 45 seconds.

The Labor Day special was a big one for fans of the niche sport, which typically is a big deal around the 4th of July. For one, it marked a rematch between these two legends — though Chestnut and Kobayashi are known to be two of the top names in the game, it had been 14 years since they competed against each other. In Netflix’s live streaming event hosted on Labor Day, Sep. 2 by Rob Riggle and Nikki Garcia, competitive eaters Chestnut and Kobayashi battled once again for the first time in 15 years. The winner was awarded $100,000 and presented with a WWE-made custom championship title belt.

Despite Kobayashi once revealing plans for retirement but wanting to battle his longtime rival again, Chestnut was revealed as the champion with 83 hot dogs eaten.

“I’ve been trying to hit 80 hot dogs for years,” Chestnut said before crediting Kobayashi for stirring the competitive nature out of him. “He drives me. We weren’t always nice to each other but we push each other to be our best.”

“I feel like I did everything I could,” Kobayashi said of the loss.

The streaming giant says that it will host a live streaming event on Labor Day, Sep. 2, featuring two legends of the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest: Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi.

The live special will be called Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef, with the location and specific timing still Tbd. One thing that Netflix has confirmed: The hot dogs will be all-beef.

The two competitive eaters battled each other for years in the annual Nathan’s contest, but the last time they competed head to head was in 2009, when Chestnut beat Kobayashi in a five hot dog sudden death eat-off.
