‘Oldboy’ Screenwriter Sets Streaming Debut With Disney+ Korean Crime Series ‘Gold Land’
Image
Disney+ has unveiled its latest Korean original: Gold Land, a gritty crime thriller created by Oldboy screenwriter Hwang Joyoon and directed by Chief Detective 1958 helmer Kim Sunghoon.

Set in rural Korea and suffused with tension, Gold Land follows Kim Heeju (played by Light Shop star Park Boyoung), a young woman who stumbles into possession of gold bars belonging to a smuggling syndicate. On the run from a violent criminal network and forced to return to a hometown she had hoped to forget, Heeju’s story quickly turns into a harrowing chase for survival.

Kim Sung Cheol (No Way Out: The Roulette, Troll Factory) co-stars as Jang Wook (aka “Woogy”), a menacing yet familiar figure from Heeju’s past who now hunts her on behalf of the syndicate.

Disney says the series promises a potent mix of suspense, action, and emotional depth — hallmarks of Hwang’s previous work in films such...

Korea’s Map and Singapore’s Momo Film Co Unveil Asian Production Alliance at Cannes Market (Exclusive)
Image
South Korean production powerhouse Map (Making A Print) has inked a strategic partnership with Singapore-based Momo Film Co to jointly develop and bankroll a slate of cutting-edge projects across Asia, it was unveiled at the Cannes Film Market.

The alliance pairs Map’s commercial and critical muscle with Momo’s emerging-talent pipeline, positioning the collaboration as a potential game-changer in the increasingly competitive Asian cinema market.

Under the deal, Momo Film Co will serve as Map’s Southeast Asian scouting arm, identifying promising regional projects for potential co-production and investment. Both companies will actively pursue international funding and grants to support these ventures.

First out of the gate is “Monna Lisa,” helmed by director Donku Lee, whose 2013 debut “Fatal” scored a slot in the Panorama section at the Berlinale. The partners are co-developing the project with plans to lock casting and pre-production by year’s end before cameras roll in Q1 2026.

‘Troll Factory’ Ending Explained & Movie Recap: Did Sang-Jin Reveal The Truth About Manjun?
Image
It’s quite scary to think that the more people around the world become connected with each other, the more a sense of insecurity, loss of personal identity, and lack of privacy start gripping them. The digital space, which brings people closer, is a void where truth and fiction simultaneously overlap to create a reality that holds ultimate power; the space itself acts as judge, jury, and executioner at the same time. Earlier, people used to believe that the media held the power to make or even break the system that makes the world operate, but now the power lies in the digital space, shared among nameless, faceless ‘beings’ scattered across the globe who decide the fate of a single individual in a smaller context and of the world itself in a much larger context.

Director Ahn Gooc-Jiin has tried to feel the pulse of this ever-increasing source of power...

Korea Box Office: ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ Retains Lead, as ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ Melts
Image
‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ retained its lead at the top of the South Korean box office on what was the quietest cinema-going weekend in more than a year.

The animated franchise movie held up reasonably. It maintained a nearly 44% market share, dropped only 32% week-on-week and was untroubled by competition from new releases. The film earned $1.91 million between Friday and Sunday, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). After 12 days on release, “Kung Fu Panda 4” has a cumulative total of $8.48 million.

“Exhuma,” which had held the top spot for six weeks before losing it a week ago, remained in second spot. It earned $772,000 with a nearly 18% market share. Since releasing on Feb. 22, it has amassed a cumulative $82.7 million, earned from 11.8 million spectators.

While the top two films showed endurance, the overall box office market looked sickly. Across the nation’s roughly 2,500 cinemas,...

Korea Box Office: ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ Opens on Top, Deposes ‘Exhuma’
Image
“Kung Fu Panda 4” took top spot at the South Korean box office becoming the film that finally pushed aside local champion “Exhuma,” which had dominated for seven consecutive weeks.

But it was an understated victory, rather than a triumphant one, and the exhibition industry’s $5.6 million nationwide haul was among the lowest scoring weekends this year.

“Kung Fu Panda 4” earned $2.81 million between Friday and Sunday with a 50.1% market share. Over its full five day run since a Wednesday opening, it enjoyed a $5.96 million total.

“Exhuma” slipped to second place in its eight weekend of release. It earned $938,000 for a cumulative of $81.2 million since releasing on Feb. 22. Its cumulative total is more than three times the score of the next highest ranked film “Wonka,” with $24.5 million.

“The Last 10 Years,” a Japanese romance film which first played in Korea in May 2023, climbed to third place on its second weekend...

Korea Box Office: ‘Exhuma’ Hits $80 Million, Scores Seventh Weekend Win
Image
Without significant new challengers, spooky Korean drama “Exhuma” held on at the top of the South Korea box office chart for the seventh consecutive weekend. Its cumulative passed the symbolic $80 million mark.

The lack of strong new release titles also meant that aggregate weekend box office in Korea slipped to a lowly $5.59 million.

The Choi Min-sik-starring “Exhuma” dropped roughly 50% week-on-week to record $1.59 million between Friday and Sunday, and a 28% market share, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). That gives it a cumulative total of $80.8 million, earned from 11.3 million spectators.

“Troll Factory,” a crime drama about a journalist’s investigation of an online scam, has received mixed reviews, but held on the second position in its second weekend of release. It earned $1 million between Friday and Sunday and has a two-week cumulative of $5.57 million.

“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” which...

Korea Box Office: ‘Exhuma’ Holds Off ‘Troll Factory,’ ‘Godzilla x Kong’ for Its Sixth Weekend Win
Image
Spooky Korean drama film “Exhuma” held on at the top of the local box off ice chart for the sixth consecutive weekend. It saw off challenges from significant newcomers “Troll Factory” and “Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire.”

The Choi Min-sik-starring “Exhuma” dropped 32% week-on-week to record $3.08 million between Friday and Sunday, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). That gives it a cumulative total of $78.7 million, earned from nearly 11 million spectators.

“Troll Factory,” a crime drama, in which an investigative journalist is lured into probing an online scam company only for his informant to mysteriously disappear, was the weekend’s highest-placed new release. Directed by Ahn Gooc-jin and starring Son Suk-ku (Netflix’s “A Killer Paradox”), it earned $2.56 million, good enough for second place, between Friday and Sunday. Over its five opening days it built a total of $3.75 million.
