I watched it because of the cast. It was Bella Thorne and America's Angel Madison Pettis as well as the guy who played Rocky's brother in "Shake It Up". The guy who plays the main character was annoying at first, but you warm up to him. Also, this is the last movie in which the late Joan Rivers appears. She plays the grandmother, is only in one scene and only has a couple of lines.
The plot is extremely lame. There is a weird looking guy in a graveyard who for some reason tries to capture a family. The two kids get away and become ghosts. Only the main character can see them. Then there is a ghost of an eastern European acrobat who somehow has a part in this story. I couldn't figure out what was going on.
But the best part of the movie are the friendships. The main character develops a close friendship with Madison and Ty. They have a lot of fun together too. Also the main character has a crush on Bella Thorne. What would a Disney movie be without a dork chasing after the prettiest girl in school (in this case, the world)?
I remember Madison Pettis as America's Angel in Cory in the House. There have been a lot of cute child actors. Remember that kid from Home Alone? He turned out to be a whack job. But Madison Pettis is aging gracefully. She has turned out to be breathtakingly beautiful. She can act. She can dance (there's a dance scene in this movie). She's on her way to a long career. Let's hope she doesn't go cuckoo.
All in all, it was a fun movie to watch.
The story is about Max, who is friends with two ghosts, who has to thwart the evil plans of a ghoul that dwell in the local cemetery. But things are not all that easy, especially when there is a trickster ghoulish spirit on the prowl with the ability to inhabit the bodies of the living.
"Mostly Ghostly: Have You Met My Ghoulfriend" is a good movie for a Halloween event with the entire family, especially if there are youngster in the group, because this movie has just a little bit of something for just everyone.
As for the effects, well they were doing alright and serving the purpose they were intended for. Just don't expect to be dazzled and blown away by a multi-million dollar CGI budget here.
The people on the cast list were doing good jobs with their given roles, and that added to the overall enjoyment of the entire movie.
If you enjoy R.L. Stine's books, then you would also enjoy this movie.
