After the heroes of the Sailor Moon franchise are able to defeat the villains of the Dark Kingdom, they soon come across a brand-new threat, which is the devious Black Moon Clan. Just like their previous foes, the members of the Black Moon Clan all had minions to help them in their conquest. However, the Droids proved to be quite different from the many Youma that worked for the Dark Kingdom.
The Droids are presented in different ways depending on the medium they are featured in. Sometimes a Droid looks similar to another Droid, while in other pieces of media, each Droid is unique. No matter what, however, one must be prepared when encountering a Droid, as their powers are not something to scoff at.

The original Sailor Moon anime adaptation from the 1990s diverges from the original plot in the source manga by Naoko Takeuchi, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. The Dark Kingdom arc in both the '90s anime and the manga introduces mid-tier villain named Nephrite. He serves Queen Beryl as one of her powerful and cunning Shitennou.
The anime explores a bit more of Nephrite's personality and showcases his ethereal celestial powers and tastes. It also gives him a redemption arc, the nuances of which leave fans torn about how they feel about it. Nephrite is both a controversial and compelling figure, and the anime's treatment of him invites speculation and analysis of what he means to the series and what he could have become if different creative choices were made regarding his redemption arc.

The Dark Kingdom arc is the first Sailor Moon arc, whose base storyline is canon in the manga series, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, in the '90s original anime, and in the reboot anime, Sailor Moon Crystal. The '90s Sailor Moon anime was purposefully extended by studios with several filler arcs. The thought was to make the '90s anime as interesting and engaging as possible to a wide audience. One of the main added filler arcs is the Seven Great Youma mini-arc.
Crystals are a key component in Sailor Moon, and the Seven Great Youma each carry one of the Seven Rainbow Crystals. These Great Youma were key warriors who fought on the side of Queen Beryl and Queen Metalia, helping to topple the Moon Kingdom. When the Seven Great Youma fell, Queen Serenity imprisoned them in crystals and sent them to Earth to be reborn as gifted and virtuous humans.

Sailor Moon fans around the world are in for a treat this year as the Sailor Moon: The Super Live show performs for U.S. audiences. The cast of the musical recently sat down to discuss their roles, how Sailor Moon has inspired them and, most of all, how The Super Live will still feel like classic Sailor Moon.
The pivotal magical girl anime defined a generation in the '90s -- fans grew up reading the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon manga week to week in Kodansha's shojo manga magazine Nakayoshi and standing guard at their televisions waiting for new episodes to air. Death is often on the line in Sailor Moonbattles, and no hero or villain is totally safe from it, no matter how powerful they are. The first Sailor Moon anime, especially, suffers from a pattern of killing villains just as they're redeemed. Those villains may be mid-tier villains, but they have unique personalities, and many fans feel like their loss is a waste of a likable and useful character.
Even villains who are never redeemed sometimes feel like they're gone too soon. Some of them are defeated all too easily after so much buildup about their strength. Other villains are so minor that they don't last longer than an episode, but they have such great personalities and character design that fans wouldn't mind them sticking around a bit longer.

In the '90s Sailor Moon anime, Usagi Tsukino transforms into the Pretty Guardian of Love and Justice, fighting to keep the world save from all forces of evil. One of the first villains she encounters on her adventures is Queen Beryl, a sorceress and commander of the Dark Kingdom.
Working for Queen Beryl were the four Shitennou, Jadeite, Nephrite, Zoisite, and Kunzite. While they are ultimately no match for Sailor Moon and the rest of the Sailor Guardians, the Shitennou have some of the most tragic fates in the series. Over different versions of the story, from the anime, manga and the Sailor Moon Crystal adaptation, the Shitennou's roles and final outcome vary significantly, making it hard to tell what truly happened to them after they crossed paths with Sailor Moon.

Some of the strongest and most noble heroes in Sailor Moon have the most devastating powers. Sailor Guardians like Sailor Pluto, Sailor Saturn, and even Sailor Cosmos bear the burden of powers that could destroy the world. Death is a part of rebirth, and some of the Sailor Guardians' powers reflect that darkness and destruction that comes before rebirth.
Many Sailor Moon villains channel the powers of darkness and destruction. A couple of them stand out with their mastery over death and destruction. Sailor Moon explores the circle of life and the line between fighting fire with fire, and letting the fire consume the wielder through its death, darkness, and destruction powers.

The Sailor Moon fanchise has various villains that the Sailor Guardians face off against, and the Boule Brothers are some of the unique. The brothers are servants of the Black Moon clan and mostly work under Esmeraude. They dutifully serve her and Prince Demande in their quest to conquer present-day Tokyo. Much like the other members of the clan, Chiral and Achiral's powers trap their victims in illusions.
The depiction of their abilities differs between the anime and manga of Sailor Moon. Sometimes their powers will receive more attention, like in the 90s anime. But in the manga and Crystal, these abilities are used for a specific reason and don't become relevant afterward. But for fans who still want clarification on how Chiral and Achiral's powers work, it might be simpler to understand than many believe.

Magical girl anime has been a staple of the broader anime genre for decades. As the 2000s shifted into the 2010s, magical girl anime shifted with it. Series like Sailor Moon or Magical Lyrical Nanoha have captivated fans of the subgenre in the past and featured melodramatic stories to coincide with spectacular battles. There were still plenty of lighthearted titles from the 2010s, but shows that dealt with darker themes started becoming more prominent.
It's common for many people in the anime community to see the 2010s as the decade when magical girl titles leaned into being edgy and serious. More popular titles from the past decade indeed subverted conventional tropes, but not all of them were strictly dark. Many used these bleak story beats to reinforce themes of hope and prevailing through despair. Even in the face of overwhelming odds, most of these shows remind their audience that there...

Most of the heroes' abilities and attacks in Sailor Moon have elemental and celestial themes. The Inner Sailor Guardians have fire, water, thunder, and light abilities. Sailor Moon's strongest abilities have a celestial theme, as she wields moonlight and stardust to destroy, to heal, and to purify.
Since a warrior's powers align with the celestial body they come from, Sailor Chibi Moon also has moonlight-based powers. She doesn't have many lunar attacks, seemingly because she's still a young princess of the Moon Kingdom's line, but it seems that she will follow in her mother's footsteps. Together, they channel the pure light of the moon as they battle their enemies.

The SuperS arc introduces an extensive new cast of villains, from a devastatingly powerful and devious dark queen to her ringleader second-in-command to her team of henchmen.

The Supernatural Sisters (also called the Spectre Sisters or the Ayakashi Sisters) are often considered Sailor Moon's most iconic and memorable villains. Consisting of Koan, Berthier, Calaveras, and Petz, this group debuted in the Black Moon Arc. The Spectre Sisters are fascinating because the 1990s anime and the original manga handled them differently.
While the manga (and thus Sailor Moon Crystal) gave them surprisingly little screen time, the original anime expanded their roles dramatically, giving the sisters individual character arcs. Because of this, the Spectre Sisters feature in some of Sailor Moon's most memorable battle sequences, using their unique powers to push the Sailor Scouts to their limits.

While Sailor Moon had its fair share of violent battles, it wasn't afraid to use anime battle tropes to enhance other clashes.

Part of what makes Sailor Moon so iconic and enduring in the hearts of fans is its epic romance arc. Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion have a kind of Romeo and Juliet story, meeting a tragic end at the downfall of the Moon Kingdom. However, they are given a second chance when they're reborn on Earth as Usagi and Mamoru, destined to always find each other.
Though this is Sailor Moon's central romance, the franchise wouldn't be what it is without its well-developed side characters. These characters often have romances of their own, to greater and lesser degrees. Even the pairings that don't have as many scenes together form relationships that are still beautifully crafted and compelling, captivating audiences across Sailor Moon's many adaptations.

Sailor Moon is a beautifully written epic tale about a girl with a grand and heavy destiny who must find her inner strength and courage. The story is highly thematic, and not meant to revolve around an extremely meticulous power system. The magical logic, plot, and characterization is rather consistent throughout the original manga, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, but the anime changed some elements which shakes some of the story's internal structure.
A plot hole is an inconsistency, and it can crop up in any element of a story, from the magic system to a character's personality and motives, to the overall plot arc. The original anime ran concurrently to Naoko Takeuchi finishing the manga series, so they had to add some filler arcs. There are many wonderful aspects to those filler arcs, but fans still trip over some of the writing choices made. Sloppy attempts at censorship in the...

Sailor Moon follows Usagi Tsukino, a middle-school girl who discovers she's also Sailor Moon, a warrior reincarnated from the fallen Moon Kingdom and the only one capable of defending the Earth from the forces of evil. Working alongside her Sailor Guardian friends, she fights for love and justice in an anime spanning 5 seasons, 200 episodes and 3 feature-length films. Given its fierce popularity, the next series, Sailor Moon Crystal, offered fans a faithful-to-the-manga retelling of the iconic Sailor Moon story.

Sailor Moon is an epic magical series with unique and well-written villains. Even the antagonists that look the most simplistic on the surface are tied to complex philosophical themes that extend across story arcs. Naoko Takeuchi's series has been around as a manga and an anime since the 1990s, and the franchise has only grown since then.
Every Sailor Moon story arc is defined by its main villain. Between the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon manga series, the first anime adaptation, the movies, and the reboot series, Sailor Moon Crystal, the villain timeline can get a little confusing. Some villains intersect as they reappear in different story arcs outside their main plot line.

At its heart, Sailor Moon is a story about not just the superheroines who save their universe time and again, but the relationships they forge with each other. Focusing primarily on Usagi Tsukino, a student who discovers she is the reincarnation of a long-lost princess from the moon, the narrative follows Sailor Moon as she learns to hone her powers. Along the way, she meets several other young women who also possess powers of their own, and together they team up to save their city.
However, not all is simple when it comes to making new allies. Upon encountering Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune, Sailor Moon and her friends find that the other two Sailor Guardians are not at all interested in teaming up. In reality, forging an alliance with Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus may prove to be easier compared to gaining the trust of Sailor Saturn.

Sailor Moon's lore is fascinating. Naoko Takeuchi's manga epic and its numerous anime adaptations feature a lot of fascinating world-building that fleshes out the world and the central conflict, increasing the story's depth and tension. However, while some of this lore is presented directly and explained in detail, other elements are left painfully unexplained, forcing fans to piece together numerous "blink and you'll miss it" details to get the complete picture. Nothing sums up this latter category more than Planet Mau, as despite being crucial to the overall story, it doesn't get the spotlight it deserves. But what is this planet, and what role does it play in the Sailor Moon story?

Sailor Moon's Outer Sailor Guardians possess the Talismans, some of the most intriguing weapons in the series. These powerful objects are a key source of the Guardians' strength. Except for Sailor Saturn, all the Guardians had access to one Talisman each. These weapons enhance each of their Guardians' abilities and make them even more powerful than before.
Sailors Uranus, Pluto, and Neptune all use these artifacts to the fullest. Unlike other weapons in the series, the three Guardians don't just use them in battle. All three weapons do have special abilities if used separately. Together, though, their combined power is truly formidable. While they can have the power to work miracles, their usage could also spell the end of the universe in more ways than one.

Sailor Venus is a vital team member that has countlessly saved Sailor Moon and the Sailor Guardians from danger. Formerly known as Sailor V, she's one of the only Sailor Guardians who has operated outside the Sailor Scouts team and has a vast knowledge of the enemies they face and combat experience.
Not only is Sailor Venus valuable as a team member, but she has a bright personality and a selfless attitude that makes her downright lovable. From being one of the most badass characters and a fangirl at heart, Sailor Venus has had amazing moments in Sailor Moon Crystal that make her a standout Sailor Guardian.

Compared to Sailor Moon Crystal, Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon tends to be quite darker than its anime counterpart. Although Sailor Moon Crystal is faithful to the manga adaptation's main points, it censors most of the gruesome scenes that are found in the manga.
The villains were more ruthless in their quest to slay Sailor Moon and the Sailor Guardians. In the anime, it doesn't seem like they target ordinary citizens all too much, and if they do, it occurs off-screen. In the manga, though, readers get to witness how ruthless villains like Prince Demande and Queen Beryl are in their goal to destroy the Moon Kingdom.

Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune are known for their deep chemistry, both inside and out of their lives as Sailor Guardians. Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon showcases their deep bond just as much as the 90s Sailor Moon anime and in Sailor Moon Crystal, and seeing how the two anime were adapted from the source material sheds a new light on the Sailor Moon franchise.
Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus are always seen linked, and despite how close they are, their personalities are vastly different. Sailor Uranus is a strong-headed character who jumps into action almost immediately, while Sailor Neptune is more level-headed and patient with deciding. Their contradicting personalities is exactly what makes them formidable as a team though, since they cover each other's weaknesses.

Many anime adaptations are seen through to a proper conclusion, adapting the entirety of their source material. However, especially in the early days of anime, a series might only get one or two seasons before ending without reaching a proper ending. Other series reach a conclusion, but they stray from the source material, adding in their own original story lines instead.
While fans deeply loved the original Sailor Moon anime, it was full of filler and took its own liberties with the story arcs of the main characters. Sailor Moon Crystal began in 2014, adapting the Sailor Moon manga into a more faithful anime. Other anime have been rebooted to fit their manga versions better, such as Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Tokyo Mew Mew. Now, it's high time other anime received a proper anime reboot, just like how Sailor Moon Crystal revitalized the Sailor Moon series.

Sailor Moon's history on the big screen plays a bigger role in the franchise's legacy than most people may realize. The original 90s anime was already a smash hit for Japanese and international fans. Thanks to the success of the first movie trilogy, the franchise has told rich stories outside the scope of the original manga. The 90s anime took liberties with how it adapted the later parts of the story, but seeing storylines that were just as intense on the big screen impacted several fans.
Eventually, the franchise would receive another anime adaptation in 2015 with Sailor Moon Crystal. Unlike the 90s anime, this adaptation stayed far closer to the manga. Since Crystal was a more straightforward adaptation of the events of the manga, its movies followed suit. Crystal's two movies, Sailor Moon Eternal and Sailor Moon Cosmos, faithfully adapt the last two arcs of the manga. Yet again,...

Since the original manga's debut in 1991, Sailor Moon has remained not just one of the most popular magical girl pieces of media, but a staple of the entire medium of anime. Sailor Moon is a shojo anime series with plenty of loose ends that haven't fully been tied up. The franchise has seen several anime adaptations, reprints of the original manga series, and stage plays to its name. But despite that, there are still plenty of mysteries that have yet to be solved. Some questions have been brought up thanks to the '90s anime, while others are still unresolved in the manga and Netflix's Sailor Moon Crystal.
For a shojo anime series that's had no new story material since the original manga ended, there are still questions that have yet to get answers. While the '90s anime and manga spin-offs have tried to provide answers, they are, unfortunately, too vague for proper closure and loose ends remain in the overall story. These are hotly debated topics that still dominate discussion among the fanbase to this day.

In the 190s, Sailor Moon was the quintessential magical girl anime, with Usagi Tsukino's adventures defending Earth against evil defining the genre for fans around the world. The anime series, which ran for 200 episodes, also spawned three animated films during its original broadcast run. With the more modern Sailor Moon Crystal giving the franchise an updated look and feel, now is the perfect time to remake Usagi's movie adventures, too.
Sailor Moon R, S and SuperS all received films -- but one of the three continues to stand out as a stellar piece of storytelling in the show's lexicon. Sailor Moon isn't fantastic because of its action and riveting plot, but also for its comedic episodes that leave a last impression on fans. Alongside the great fighting sequences Sailor Moon has, the original 90s Sailor Moon still has some great and hilarious episodes that are still memorable today.
What sets the 90s Sailor Moon apart from Sailor Moon Crystal is that the original Sailor Moon actually had a ton more episodes, which helped with building and fleshing out the Sailor Scouts just a tad bit more. Paired with the main plot, this made the series fleshed out and all-around more binge-worthy, since there was plenty of content to watch.

The many different genres of anime showcase tremendous creativity, but a common trait in the medium is an unbelievably overpowered protagonist. There's a certain level of satisfaction in a strong hero who dominates on the battlefield. However, this superiority can come at the cost of tension and suspense.
There's a fine line between an overpowered main character who's so strong that fights stop being fun to watch and an individual who realistically grows stronger in tandem with the obstacles that they face. There's a lot of value in an underdog, but some satisfying anime feature ridiculously strong main characters who still manage to create excitement in different ways. Better yet, sometimes the underdogs are exactly the same characters who become the strongest.

Naoko Takeuchi's Sailor Moon series has always been famous for its flashy and stylish attacks. From the iconic Moon Tiara Action, to Venus' Venus Love Me Chain, there's no shortage of iconic attacks to choose from. But for people who are only familiar with Sailor Moon's anime, fans may not know that there are plenty of finishing moves that can only be found in the original manga.
While the original '90s anime and Sailor Moon Crystal have additional attacks to the Sailor Guardians' arsenals, the manga still has attacks that weren't adapted by either series. These techniques can vary wildly in utility, power, and skill. For one reason or another, these fantastic skills can only be found in the black-and-white pages of the manga.

When fans think of the villains in the popular magical girl anime Sailor Moon, their minds jump to the more commonly known big bads such as Queen Beryl, Prince Demande, Queen Nehelenia, or even Galaxia. Each of these antagonists left their mark on the series for their flair, tragic backstories, or their ability to bring the Sailor Guardians to their knees.
However, the ultimate evil in Naoko Takeuchi’s universe isn’t a single person or duo of baddies at all, but an abstract entity: Chaos. Chibiusa and Usagi's relationship in Sailor Moon has never failed to deliver some hilarious moments for viewers to watch. They bicker with one another from the very first moment that they meet, and their banter carries on even after they grow to love each other's presence, making their moments with one another even better.
While they argue with each other a lot, their bickering isn't filled with malice, even when Usagi is wary of Chibiusa's presence in Season Two of Sailor Moon Crystal.
