New month, new horror recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This installment features selections reflecting the month of April 2024.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include telepathic plants, ecological horrors, and a lot of killer cats.
The Uncanny (1977)
Pictured: The Uncanny (1977)
Directed by Denis Héroux.
The Uncanny is a two-for kind of deal: it works for both National Pet Day (April 11) and Tell a Story Day (April 27). Here we have Peter Cushing‘s character talking at length about the evils of cats, with his three examples fleshing out this singular anthology. And while this film is often mistaken for an Amicus production, it was, in fact, made by The Rank Organisation. However, Amicus co-founder Milton Subotsky was also a co-producer.

Update: Actress Lisa Sheridan died as a result of chronic alcoholism, according to a coroner’s report.
The report arrives three months after the 44-year-old actress died in New Orleans. The cause of death was listed on the report as due to “complications of chronic alcoholism” and had suffered a “remote brain injury” from an unspecified fall. She also had hyperinflated lungs.
Earlier: Lisa Sheridan, who had roles in the television series Invasion and Halt and Catch Fire, died Monday of as-yet-unknown causes. She was 44.
Sheridan’s manager, Mitch Clem, confirmed the death to Deadline Wednesday evening.
“Lisa passed away on Monday morning. She was at home in New Orleans. Cause of death is not known at this time. We are waiting for the coroners,” Clem said in a statement. “Obviously, we were all blindsided with this devastating loss. Lisa was deeply loved. We are heartbroken.”

“Halt and Catch Fire” actress Lisa Sheridan, who also worked on numerous other series like “Invasion” and “CSI,” died in her New Orleans apartment Feb. 25. She was 44.
Sheridan’s “Only God Can” co-star Donna D’Errico shared the news on Facebook.
“It’s so rare to find kind, gentle souls like hers in this industry, this city…even this world,” she wrote. “Truly one of the most genuinely sweet and gentle people I’ve ever come across in my life.”
Sheridan’s manager told People that they are still waiting on a coroner’s report for cause of death, and that the family insists she did not take her own life.

Wrestling star John Hennigan takes on a very weird science in the coming film Strange Nature — which highlights the horrifying effects of man-made pollution on nature. The WWE, Impact Wrestling and Lucha Underground legend — aka John Morrison, Johnny Impact and Johnny Mundo — has to step in as a town succumbs to the vile mutations coming from the local lake. But why? The official tagline is “It’s man versus nature” as Hennigan and co-star Stephen Tobolowsky’s Mayor Paulson are locked in a deadly game of who or what mutated the town’s amphibians. Strange Nature: What is the movie about? Kim […]

full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by distributor October Coast. Director/writer: James Ojala. Cast: Tiffany Shepis, Stephen Tobolowsky, Lisa Sheridan, John Hennigan and Bruce Bohne. Strange Nature is an eco-horror or bio-thriller film. This title was developed by first time feature film director and make-up effects guru James Ojala. This title features: Tiffany Shepis (Victor Crowley), Lisa Sheridan ("CSI: Miami"), Bruce Bohne and a few others. Fans of Shepis will be disappointed as she appears in only a couple of scenes. However, Strange Nature does bring a lot of interesting characters to the screen, including former pop star and protagonist Kim Sweet (Sheridan). A micro-budget feature, much of the production value is put into the many deformed creatures on-screen. As well, Strange Nature offers a few comedic bits, before moving into more horrifying territory. This film offers both light and dark tones as one town struggles to.

Tagline: "Our Waters are Hiding a Killer." Strange Nature is a horror film from spfx guru James Ojala (Hellboy II: The Golden Army ). In Strange Nature, a real life ecological disaster is brought to the screen. In 1995, deformed frogs began to appear in Minnesota ponds. The film shows those deformities in some of the characters! Strange Nature stars: Stephen Tobolowsky (Groundhog Day), Tiffany Shepis (Victor Crowley) Carlos Alazraqui and John Hennigan. A trailer for the film was released late last year (found below). Now, a concept poster is available, here. For more on the story, the real life events for the film were investigated by the U.S. government, until 2001. A cause, for the amphibious deformities, was never found. Within the film, a single mother struggles to deal with a number of strange incidents. She must protect her son as a small town, in Minnesota, begins to turn into something unrecognizable.
