Voyager Always Had The Best Premise Of Any Star Trek Show
Image
Star Trek: Voyager premiered 30 years ago with a unique premise that's still among the best of any Star Trek show. The Starship Enterprise's original mission—in both Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation—was to explore strange new worlds. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was entrusted with guarding the Bajoran wormhole, ultimately protecting the Alpha Quadrant from the Gamma Quadrant's invading Dominion forces. While the Tng cast moved on to movies and DS9 set the stage for its Dominion War, Star Trek: Voyager promised an interesting twist on the familiar Star Trek formula.

Star Trek: Voyager's premiere episode, "Caretaker", opened at the by-then-familiar locale of Deep Space Nine, where Captain Kathryn Janeway's (Kate Mulgrew) USS Voyager launched its inaugural mission to retrieve Commander Chakotay's (Robert Beltran) Maquis raider from the nearby Badlands. Both ships were flung across 70,000 lightyears to the Delta Quadrant, an as-yet-unseen...

Star Trek’s Multiverse Revealed A Voyager Story I’d Like To See
Image
The USS Voyager spent seven years stranded in the Delta Quadrant before it was finally able to return to Earth at the end of Star Trek: Voyager. Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5, episode 9, "Fissure Quest," however, reveals in at least one universe, that return to Earth never happened. When the USS Voyager was initially stranded in the Delta quadrant, it was the first time Star Trek took the concept of being lost in space and made it the premise for an entire show. At the time, it was unclear whether or not this premise would pan out.

Nevertheless, being stranded in the Delta Quadrant, with no assistance or guidance from Starfleet, was precisely what made Star Trek: Voyager episodes so interesting to begin with. It meant that when the crew faced tight situations - from battles for their survival to nuances of the Prime Directive - they faced those dangers entirely alone.

Vulture has appropriately named the Kazon, Star Trek: Voyager's quasi-villians
Image
Star Trek: Voyager did a great job of establishing some major villians during its seven-year run. Species 8472 and the Hirogens come to mind, but when you think about really scary enemies who could give Voyager a run for its money, the Kazon don't even make the top ten list.

Introduced in Voyager's pilot episode, "Caretaker," the Kazon were meant to be a formidable species with an aggressive, territorial nature. Though they tried to come across as frightening (and even managed to give Voyager some serious trouble in a few episodes), overall, they just weren't that intimidating. Sure, they brought the weapons to the battles, but, in the end, they just weren't compelling enough to be the ultimate warriors to defeat Voyager or really even stay in the battle very long. They were phased out as the series went on, though, they appeared in every season of Voyager.

Perhaps it was...

7 Times Harry Kim Deserved A Promotion On Star Trek: Voyager
Image
During Star Trek: Voyager's seven years in the Delta Quadrant, there were plenty of times when Ensign Harry Kim (Garrett Wang) deserved a promotion, but didn't get it. Ensign Kim's elusive second pip has persisted for so long that it's become a running joke in Star Trek fandom, with Wang himself referring to his character as the "eternal ensign" as co-host of The Delta Flyers podcast with Star Trek: Voyager's Tom Paris actor Robert Duncan McNeill. Even when Paris is re-promoted in Star Trek: Voyager's season 6 finale, "Unimatrix Zero", Kim points out being skipped over for advancement.

There was never one singular, concrete reason that Harry Kim was never promoted in Star Trek: Voyager. One behind-the-scenes explanation points to Voyager producer Brannon Braga insisting that "somebody's gotta be the ensign", equating Ensign Kim with Star Trek: The Next Generation's Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) or Star Trek:...

Death Streamer Review: Full Moon’s Second Pulp Noir Release
Image
Plot: When a vampire uses technologically advanced glasses to live stream his kills, he gains a large online following – and catches the attention of a trio of supernatural investigators who set out to stop him.

Review: Earlier this year, Full Moon founder Charles Band announced that his company was launching a new production label called Pulp Noir, with the focus being on “edgier, weirder, darker horror and dark fantasy films.” They also set up a Patreon account where fans can subscribe and show their support for the company while getting a behind-the-scenes look at the making of these films. The first movie in the Pulp Noir line, a female serial killer story called Quadrant, was released in August, with a black & white release following in September – and now that October is upon us, so is the second movie in the Pulp Noir line-up, the vampire story Death Streamer. Quadrant seemed...

Star Trek's Best Voyager Episodes
Image
Everything about Star Trek: Voyager was a risk when the series debuted following the end of Star Trek: The Next Generation, an incredibly popular series. The flagship show of the nascent United Paramount Network, Captain Kathryn Janeway and her crew faced familiar struggles from fans. Their story, however, took the Star Trek universe to a new part of the galaxy. The Delta Quadrant hosted never-before-seen alien species and was the backyard of the Borg.

Through syndication and wide streaming access, Star Trek: Voyager is now regarded as a classic of this universe's second wave. Voyager finished its journey strong, and the addition of Seven of Nine -- a human drone rescued from the Borg collective -- changed the series for the better. Now in the third wave of the franchise, Seven of Nine is the captain of the USS Enterprise-g, and Janeway is now a Vice Admiral leading the young cadets of Star Trek: Prodigy.

5 changes that could have made Star Trek: Discovery's first season excel
Image
Star Trek: Discovery, like some of the other Star Trek series, got off to a rather rocky start which continued throughout the entirety of its first season. It was, in fact, the season that many Star Trek fans say they couldn't get through which made them stop watching the series. While I did watch the entire first season, I agree there were some rough spots that, had they been fixed or eliminated altogether, would have made Discovery much better in its first season.

The first would be the death of Captain Georgiou because of Michael Burnham's actions. Having the captain killed could have had a much more powerful effect if it hadn't been because of a choice Burnham made. There was still a way to have the captain die and take Burnham out of action for a while, if the writers and producers had chosen that route. What about...

‘Quadrant’ Review
Image
Stars: Rickard Claeson, Emma Reinagel, Shannon Barnes, Christian Carrigan | Written by C. Courtney Joyner | Directed by Charles Band

Low-budget veteran, and all-around B-movie legend, Charles Band, makes his 400th career film in Quadrant – a tale of virtual reality, Jack the Ripper and nefarious scientist-types. At only 73 minutes long, Quadrant wastes little time in introducing us to our shady antagonists and its virtual reality “hook”. Scientists, Harry and Meg, have developed a psychological treatment in the Quadrant helmet, a virtual reality device that allows you to “live” your fears and confront them, in a seemingly safe environment. Enter Erin, a Jack the Ripper superfan, whose apartment resembles an adoring shrine to old bloody Jack. What could go wrong….?

As a premise, Quadrant stands out for its genre-hopping sci-fi/slasher leanings. Owing a debt to The Lawnmower Man, with a dash of Freddy Krueger and a sprinkling of The Matrix, I really...

Star Trek's Kate Mulgrew Has One Condition To Return As Kathryn Janeway
Image
The last time Trekkies saw Admiral Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) in live-action was via a video call to Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) in 2002's "Star Trek: Nemesis." In animation, however, we've been spoiled with the volume of Janeway in recent years. In "Star Trek: Prodigy," a holographic version of Janeway, also played by Mulgrew, served as an ersatz mother figure for the show's teenage protagonists. The real-world Janeway also eventually became involved in the action, and she too was impressed with Dal (Brett Grey), Gwyn (Ella Purnell), and the rest of the Protostar teens, to the point where she helps them apply to Starfleet Academy. In the show's second and final season, Janeway even lead a quest to rescue her old first officer, Captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran), and brought the "Prodigy" kids along.

While there are currently no plans to bring Janeway back to "Star Trek" after the end of "Prodigy,...

Star Trek Voyagers Doctor Actually Beat Janeway's Ship Home Twice
Image
It took most of Star Trek: Voyager's crew seven years to get back home, but the Doctor (Robert Picardo) made it to and from the Alpha Quadrant twice before anyone else. As a hologram, the Doctor was unique among Voyager's cast of characters and became one of the show's most popular additions as a result. Although the Doctor started Voyager with a very limited scope, by later seasons he had not only gained sentience but the ability to travel independently and even participate in away missions, two of which included risky trips to the Alpha Quadrant.

Most Star Trek TV shows already take place in the Alpha Quadrant, but Voyager's setting in the Delta Quadrant helped breathe new life into the franchise with a completely new region of space to explore. Being stranded in the Delta Quadrant also gave the USS Voyager and her crew a core mission to...

Star Trek: Prodigy Wants to Be More Than Just a Voyager Sequel
Image
This Star Trek: Prodigy article contains spoilers.

Even though it got seven full seasons, Star Trek: Voyager still has a reputation as lesser Trek. However, in the decades since Captain Janeway brought her crew back home from the Delta Quadrant in 2001, Voyager has become a fan-favorite. So beloved is Voyager that Trekkies have thrilled to see the return of some of the cast, including Seven of Nine and Tuvok on Picard.

More than Picard or Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy has functioned as a Voyager sequel series. The story begins with a bunch of kids in the Delta Quadrant finding a ship once captained by Chakotay; Janeway (as both an Admiral and a hologram) plays a major role in the series; and the Doctor joined the main crew in the latest season.

Yet, despite all of these connections, Prodigy creators Kevin and Dan Hageman don’t want to limit themselves to just Voyager.

Star Trek: Picard Almost Brought Back the Best Voyager Characters
Image
Life has never been better for Star Trek: Voyager fans. Prodigy functions as a sequel to the show, with return performances by Kate Mulgrew, Robert Beltran, and Robert Picardo; Tim Russ’ Tuvok and Robert Duncan McNeil’s Tom Paris have dropped by Picard and Lower Decks; and Seven of Nine ended Picard as the Captain of the Enterprise-g.

But the final season of Picard almost brought back even more Voyager characters to the 25th century. During a Zoom chat attended by Trek Movie earlier this year, Picard season three showrunner Terry Matalas revealed that he originally planned to bring back two other beloved members of the Voyager crew: Harry Kim and Naomi Wildman.

The latter would have appeared as part of a Star Trek version of “Avengers: Endgame” that Matalas envisioned. “Harry Kim appeared as the captain of the Voyager-b in the first draft of Frontier Day,” Matalas explained, but...

Where Is Seven Of Nine In Star Trek: Prodigy (& Will She Appear In Season 2?)
Image
Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 hints at potential Seven of Nine appearance, tying back to the character's Fenris Rangers duty in the Beta Quadrant. Legal complications may hinder Seven of Nine's appearance in Prodigy season 2, despite potential for her story to inspire Janeway's young proteges. Star Trek legacy characters are strategically distributed among new shows, with budgetary restrictions impacting character crossovers.

Where is Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) when Star Trek: Prodigy takes place, and could Seven appear in Prodigy season 2? Modern Star Trek shows have made a point of calling back to Star Trek series of the past, reuniting audiences with fan-favorite characters. Star Trek: Voyager's Seven of Nine is a major player in the cast of Star Trek: Picard, thanks to Seven and Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) sharing a common history with the Borg. Aside from a brief reunion with Captain Tuvok (Tim Russ), however, Seven's Picard...
