43 years ago, the runaway box office success of "48 Hrs.," in which Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy bickered and brawled as they attempted to track down a couple of vicious escaped convicts, turned the buddy-cop subgenre into a formula goldmine. Before the 1980s drew to a close, films like "Running Scared," "Beverly Hills Cop," "Lethal Weapon," and "Red Heat" were able to work profitable variations on this very simple dynamic. Even though cops have never been more difficult to root for, the subgenre, as evidenced by the 2024 success of "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley," is still commercially appealing today.
While movies like "48 Hrs." and "Lethal Weapon" were powered by tightly constructed screenplays, the vast majority of buddy cop films got by on comedic anarchy. They actually had more in common with Richard Rush's gloriously shaggy "Freebie and the Bean" from 1974; two partners exchange profane repartee for a couple...

If the question ever arose in your mind, what if someone decides to make a Terminator movie, imbues the murder machine with old-school uncanny valley aesthetics like that of the doll from Squid Game, and adds the menacing sluggishness of slasher movie villains? then the answer will be Neil Mackay’s Armed. Essentially a homage to 80s and 90s campy slasher movies, Armed is extremely basic when it comes to plot development, and despite following every stereotypical visual cue involved with such genre movies, it manages to pack a punch through overall treatment. The budgetary constraint is noticeable from the VFX, but the sense of survival dread captured through an atmospheric treatment thanks to cinematographer Martin Wisniewski allows a stronger immersion.

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from the Season 3 premiere of HBO‘s The White Lotus.
The guests at The White Lotus have unpacked their bags and are starting to get over their jetlag, some with the help of wine and pharmaceuticals, but the mood is starting to get darker.
Each season of the HBO drama has created breakout moments from Armand and Shane’s meltdowns in season one to Tanya being chased by murderous gay men in season two.
The discourse around season three seems to be focusing in on the strangely incestuous relationship within the Ratliff family siblings; Patrick Schwarzenegger’s Saxon, Sam Nivola’s Lochlan and Sarah Catherine Hook’s Piper.
Episode two won’t do much to dampen down this storyline with Lochlan revealing to Piper that Saxon has been discussing her sex life. “Saxon says you’ve never had sex,” Lochlan says sitting in a sea hammock.
