When initially announced that J Balvin would be doing the voice of Tusk in the English version of Solo Leveling, fans were worried. The globally renowned reggaeton artist had never done voice acting for anime previously, so his casting was unexpected. With only a little over a month left in the year 2024, there isn't much in the way of new releases left to be excited about. However, one particular standout this winter season is Nosferatu, director Robert Eggers' long-awaited re-imagining of the classic horror film. Set to be released in theaters this coming Christmas, early industry screenings have already hailed the film as a masterpiece, with one particular draw being Lily-Rose Depp as the lead character Ellen Hutter, who, based on the trailers, develops a sort of twisted relationship with Bill Skarsgrd's Count Orlok/Nosferatu. As it turns out, working with Eggers has been on the actor's bucket list, along with a few other well-known "auteur" directors.

The found footage horror anthology series V/H/S was launched in 2012, with the sequels V/H/S/2 and V/H/S: Viral following in 2013 and 2014. There was a spin-off called SiREN in 2016, then the franchise went dormant for a few years… before being revived by the Shudder streaming service, which has had great success delivering a new V/H/S movie every year. There was V/H/S/94 in 2021, V/H/S/99 in 2022, V/H/S/85 in 2023, and V/H/S/Beyond earlier this month. There will be no lack of V/H/S next year, as our friends at Bloody Disgusting has confirmed that Shudder officially announced during the New York Comic Con that V/H/S/8 is in the works and will be receiving a 2025 release. Nosferatu is the 2024 remake of the 1922 vampire movie by director Robert Eggers, with a star-studded cast helping bring it to life. The December 25 release date of Nosferatu makes Christmas Day one with a particular bite rather than the expected dose of yuletide joy. The V/H/S franchise started in 2012 and fizzled out after three entries, but Shudder’s relaunch in 2021 proved popular enough to make a new anthology horror flick a yearly October tradition. This year’s release, V/H/S/Beyond, is incredibly refreshing, taking the franchise in a very different direction to exciting and gripping results.

V/H/S/Beyond Review

While the past few entries of V/H/S have all been centered around a specific year, Beyond is (for the most part) focused on sci-fi and aliens. While it’s less of a unique concept — there have been plenty of sci-fi/horror anthologies — the team of filmmakers that have been assembled for V/H/S/Beyond has knocked it out of the park, delivering one of the best entries not just in the franchise but in the genre as a whole.

It's incredibly hard to keep a franchise fresh when it's been around for more than a decade headed into its seventh installment. But a couple of missteps aside, the "V/H/S" franchise has done a remarkable job of keeping things fresh over the years. I'm pleased as punch to report that "V/H/S/Beyond" isn't just taking the ball and running with it — it may well have set a new high bar for the series.

The seventh installment overall and the follow-up to last year's "V/H/S/85," this new entry takes things "Beyond" by giving every one of the six segments a sci-fi hook. Marrying sci-fi and horror has often yielded very satisfying results. Some of the all-time greats in the genre, such as John Carpenter's "The Thing" or Ridley Scott's "Alien," look to the horrors of science fiction to bring us something thrilling. Season 2 of the hit Netflix Addams Family series Wednesday has been filming in Ireland since May, and Netflix has just unveiled a video that gives a glimpse behind the scenes. In the process, they have also confirmed that the new batch of episodes will premiere sometime in 2025. Among the cast and crew members seen in the video are, of course, star Jenna Ortega, as well as director Tim Burton – and during a chat with Collider, Al Gough (who created this series with Miles Millar) revealed that Burton is directing half of season 2, which is the same thing he did for the first season. That means Burton is at the helm of four of the season’s eight episodes.

However, this is not exactly what they'll get from his latest directorial effort The 4:30 Movie, filmed at Smith's childhood movie theater (which he now co-owns). Set in the summer of 1986, Smith's coming-of-age film centers around a group of friends as they grow up together and bond over their shared love of film.

Perhaps best known for Clerks and the characters Jay and Silent Bob, films in Smith's oeuvre all embrace a specific tone and style. His most recent efforts, Clerks III and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot can easily be identified -- lovingly or derisively, depending on one's view of the filmmaker...

Shot in Smiths own movie theater, Smodcastle Cinemas in Atlantic Highlands, The 4:30 Movie is his most personal film in years. Its a coming-of-age comedy about a group of teenagers theater-hopping across a single day in the 1980s.

Like Wes Anderson and Martin Scorsese, Smith is known for working with the same actors over and over again. Part of that is because most of his films take place in an interconnected universe, the View Askewniverse, so a lot of actors play the same characters across different movies. But even his non-Askewniverse films, like The 4:30 Movie, have brought in frequent collaborators like Kate Micucci and Diedrich Bader.

Thirty years ago, Kevin Smith burst into the world of independent filmmaking in a blaze of glorious serendipity that nobody could replicate if they tried. Self-financed for less than $30,000 and shot entirely in the convenience store where he worked, the original “Clerks” was an electrifying mix of slacker wit and utter absurdism at a time when putting pop culture-obsessed male mediocrity on the big screen felt like a genuinely novel concept. Even after double digit viewings, the film still feels like a pitch-perfect punk rock farce that can make even the most discerning cinephile laugh out loud more than it has any right to.

A24's upcoming horror film The Front Room looks to end the critically acclaimed studio record. Directed by Max and Sam Eggers, the brothers of acclaimed filmmaker Sam Eggers, The Front Room stars Brandy as Belinda, a pregnant woman who discovers that her stepmother-in-law Solange (Kathryn Hunter) is working her way to manipulate her stepson and take the baby from the young family for her own sinister means. A24 has earned a reputation for redefining the horror genre in the 21st century with films like Talk to Me, Heriditerary, and even Robert Egger's The Witch, so there was a certain level of expectation for The Front Room to deliver another critically acclaimed horror film.

That does not seem to be the case as Max and Sam Eggers's debut feature film will not match their older brother Robert Eggers. The initial Rotten Tomatoes score for The Front Room was revealed at 46%, with thirteen reviews.
