Summer 2025 has concluded, leaving audiences already anticipating the cinematic offerings ahead. While recent months delivered the MCU’s Fantastic Four: First Steps, DC Universe and James Gunn’s Superman, and Tom Cruise’s final Mission: Impossible installment, to name a few, their conclusion has also precipitated an anticipatory void.

With the ephemeral holiday season approaching and a sparse autumn schedule lacking family-friendly tentpoles, Hollywood’s extraordinary 2026 summer slate seeks to fill that void next year. From a convergence of acclaimed filmmakers and beloved franchises to three Anne Hathaway movies, here are the mainstream summer flicks of 2026 that have...

Disney Is Hoping to Break Its Box Office Hex With New Magical Movie Announcement
Image
Disney has unveiled their next animated feature film, and it is an original idea. Even though Walt Disney Animation typically avoided sequels, the company has increased the number of sequels since the 2010s, with 2024's Moana 2 being reworked from a Disney+ series into a feature film, following a string of original films like Strange World and Wish, which disappointed at the box office. The studio has Zootopia 2 set for a November 2025 release, and on the horizon are Frozen 3 and 4, but in 2026, Walt Disney Animation will release an original animated film.

During the Walt Disney Studios Showcase Presentation at the Destination D23 event at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort,...

Pedro Pascal Fatigue Could Tank Star Wars Theatrical Return… Just Like Fantastic Four.
Image
In a galaxy far, far away—or more accurately, in the ever-expanding multiverse of Hollywood franchises—Pedro Pascal has become the face of everything cool, from zombie apocalypses to armored bounty hunters.

But as the Chilean-American actor gears up for his big-screen Star Wars debut in The Mandalorian & Grogu, whispers of “Pascal fatigue” are growing louder. With his omnipresence in TV and film, from The Last of Us to the MCU’s Fantastic Four: First Steps, is the industry betting too heavily on one man to revive a flagging empire?

Star Wars hasn’t had a theatrical hit since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, and if Pascal’s recent...

Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars: Starfighter Is Finally Leaving George Lucas Behind to Save the Franchise
Image
The Ryan Gosling-starrer Star Wars: Starfighter has recently begun filming, and it confirms the space opera saga is finally set to leave creator George Lucas behind in hopes of saving the franchise. The upcoming movie, directed by Shawn Levy, will be unrelated to the Skywalker saga that Lucas developed over decades.

Star Wars: Starfighter is an all-new standalone adventure. The film, which has begun production, is an entirely original story set in a period of time never before explored in Star Wars.

The above statement was made in an official press release from Lucasfilm (via StarWars.com) that confirmed the Gosling-led movie had started filming. At the same time,...

Shawn Levy Says ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Dp Is Shooting ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’
Image
The camera for “Star Wars: Starfighter” is in good hands.

Shawn Levy, who is directing the upcoming “Star Wars” adventure starring Ryan Gosling, Amy Adams and Aaron Pierre confirmed Friday on X that Claudio Miranda would serve as cinematographer for the film. Miranda was most recently the Dp on Joseph Kosinski’s “F1.”

“Confirmed,” Levy said, responding to a Culture Crave post sharing the report. “Lucky me.”

Confirmed .

Lucky me.

— Shawn Levy (@ShawnLevyDirect) August 29, 2025

Though plot details on “Starfighter” are slim, Miranda’s enlistment is an exciting choice given the nature of the title. Miranda’s previous credits include Kosinski’s “F1” and “Top Gun: Maverick” — both films in which the cinematographer captures kinetic,...

Starfighter Cast: Eva Mendes to Play Ryan Reynolds’ Wife in His First Star Wars Movie (Report)
Image
According to scooper DanielRPK, Ghost Rider actress Eva Mendes will portray the wife of Ryan Gosling’s character in Star Wars: Starfighter, Lucasfilm’s next cinematic juggernaut. While her name is curiously absent from the official cast roster, this behind-the-curtain revelation confirms what many fans hoped was inevitable: Mendes will apparently be starring alongside her real-life partner for the very first time in a Star Wars production.

This return fulfills a personal vow Mendes made in 2024, telling The Times, “That’s the one thing I would love to do,” referring to acting with Gosling. She added:

He gets something out of me that’s never been accessible before.

That quote now reads like prophecy fulfilled.

This Year's Long-Awaited Sci-fi Sequel Was Shut Down and Delayed for 14 Years Due to 'Star Wars'
Image
It has been fifteen years since the release of Tron: Legacy, and fans are finally getting a follow-up in the form of Tron: Ares. While not the sequel some fans might have hoped for, as stars Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde are not returning, Ares is a loose continuation. That said, screenwriter David Digilio was hired to write a direct follow-up to Legacy back in 2011. He even maintains a story by credit on Ares, as he created the titular character, originally a villain, but now the protagonist of the new film.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Digilio spoke about the long road to getting a third Tron movie to the big screen.

Shawn Levy's Starfighter Cast Finally Has Us Excited About Star Wars Again
Image
Do you remember the days when "Star Wars" movies used to be good? Not "Star Wars" in general -- the movies. "Andor" season 2 has barely stopped tugging our heartstrings with its grounded rebel stories, the well-received "Star Wars Jedi: Survivor" video game was released in 2023, and Marvel is dropping sweet (and often Darth Vader-themed) comics all the time. "Star Wars" as a franchise is doing just fine. The movies, on the other hand, could use a win.

It's been close to a decade since the franchise rolled out a truly worthwhile big-screen effort -- either "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" (2016) or "The Last Jedi" (2017), depending on your opinion...

‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ Adds Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre as Production Begins, Drops First Look at Ryan Gosling’s Character
Image
“Star Wars: Starfighter” has jumped into lightspeed. Director Shawn Levy and star Ryan Gosling have begun production in the U.K. on Lucasfilm’s next entry in the space saga, with Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre (“Rebel Ridge”), Flynn Gray (“Wednesday”), Simon Bird (“The Inbetweeners”), Jamael Westman (“Good Grief”) and Daniel Ings (“The Gentlemen”) joining the cast. De Noche | Pedro Pascal set to star in Todd Haynes’ delayed romance
Image
Pedro Pascal is circling the lead role in Todd Haynes’ De Noche, which was supposed to film last year. More on the film below.

Once upon a time, Todd Haynes’ latest romance, De Noche, was due to star Joaquin Phoenix and film in 2024, but Phoenix’ sudden departure brought the entire production to a halt.

Thankfully, things are looking up. According to Deadline, Pedro Pascal is about to close a deal to take over the lead role in Haynes’ film. The film follows a police officer who leaves 1930s Los Angeles behind in favour of Mexico. Danny Ramirez is still attached as the younger lover.

As Deadline mentions in their story,...

Todd Haynes’ Gay Romance That Collapsed After Joaquin Phoenix Exit Could Be Revived with Pedro Pascal
Image
We were devastated when we exclusively reported just over a year ago that Joaquin Phoenix had exited a gay romance meant to be directed by Todd Haynes just days before it was to begin production. The project collapsed and seemed to be permanently shelved, but Deadline now reports that the project is hoping to be revived, this time with Pedro Pascal in the lead role.

No deals for Pascal are made, and the producers would have to work around a busy schedule for Pascal that includes two “Avengers” movies, but the hope is for the film to shoot in Guadalajara, Mexico in early 2026.

The project also now has a title, “De Noche,” and Danny Ramirez, the “Top Gun: Maverick” actor who was originally attached to star in the version alongside Phoenix, is also expected to return.

Reps for the film’s producer Killer Films and for Pascal did not respond to a request for comment.

Pedro Pascal’s Favorite Star Wars Project Broke Every George Lucas Rule for the Franchise
Image
The Fantastic Four star Pedro Pascal has been in the spotlight all summer, but that hasn’t stopped the actor from checking out Andor, one of the best recent Star Wars projects, which he admitted became his favorite despite breaking several of George Lucas‘ rules.

Unforgivably late to this party. The best political thriller series maybe ever?

Pascal made the above statement in an Instagram story (via Reddit), where he praised the epic space-opera series starring Diego Luna in the titular role. Despite tall praise from Pascal, the series undeniably broke several of Lucas’s rules for the Star Wars franchise, and here are some of the biggest boundaries Andor crossed in terms of storytelling.

'The Mandalorian' Star Says 'Star Wars' Role "Broke My Confidence"
Image
Despite Bo-Katan Kryze being one of Katee Sackhoff's most iconic roles, her time working on The Mandalorian appears to have shaken the actress's confidence in herself. Sackoff has been a staple on television since her breakout role as Starbuck on Battlestar Galactica, having gone on to appear on Longmire, 24, and The Flash. She voiced the Mandalorian Bo-Katan Kryze on Star Wars: The Clone Wars and later reprised the role in Star Wars: Rebels before playing the character in live-action Seasons 2 and 3 of The Mandalorian.

Yet, it appears something about the role of Bo-Katan left Sackhoff questioning herself as an actress, and it was an experience she is still recovering from.

Katee Sackhoff Says The Mandalorian Ruined Her Confidence, and She Didn’t Work for Three Years: ‘It Just Broke Me’

The Mandalorian was a breakout hit for Disney+, but working on the Star Wars series doesn’t exactly conjure up fond memories for Katee Sackhoff.

The Battlestar Galactica veteran, who played Bo-Katan Kryze on The Mandalorian, revealed in a recent episode of her podcast The Sackhoff Show that her two seasons on the show completely shattered her confidence as an actor, leading to her barely working in Hollywood at all for the next three years.

Katee Sackhoff Says ‘The Mandalorian’ Ruined Her Confidence: “It Broke Me”
Image
More like Boo-Katan.

Disney+’s The Mandalorian famously got pretty uneven as the series progressed (Grogu is being away to sent to train with Luke Skywalker. Wait-wait, no, he’s not).

But one character in the Star Wars drama apparently took a real psychological toll on former Battlestar Galactica star Katee Sackhoff, who first appeared late in the show’s second season as the Mandalorian warrior named Bo-Katan Kryze and then was given a far larger role in season three.

Sackhoff had actually been voicing the character for years on Star Wars animated series (such as The Clone Wars and Rebels). But she says she really struggled with playing the live-action version of her character.

“I lost all of my confidence after Mandalorian — all of it,” Sackhoff said on her YouTube channel (below). “My style of acting has always just been [that] your first instinct is the right instinct. Do that.

Why The Mandalorian Star Katee Sackhoff Struggled With Bo-Katan Role: 'It Broke Me'
Image
Anyone who's ever had a passion for movies and shows likely had this thought cross their minds at some point: Actors have the coolest jobs in the world. To be able to play dress-up, put yourself through a crash course to learn some ass-kicking new skills, and have every facet of production tailored to make you look like the most appealing person who's ever lived? All while (ideally) getting paid commensurate to your talent and hard work? Yeah. Not to be a hot-take machine or anything, but that sounds like a pretty sweet way to make a living to me.

Until it isn't, that is. Even the most glamorous-looking vocations...

‘Mandalorian’ Star Katee Sackhoff ‘Basically Didn’t Work’ for 3 Years After ‘Star Wars’ Show Because She ‘Didn’t Understand’ Her Character: ‘It Broke Me’
Image
“The Mandalorian” actor Katee Sackhoff, who starred as Bo-Katan Kryze in the “Star Wars” show, has opened up about the struggles she had playing the character and finding work in the last few years.

On a recent episode of her podcast, “The Sackhoff Show,” she discussed with her former “Battlestar Galactica” co-star Tahmoh Penikett how playing Bo-Katan on “The Mandalorian” dealt a blow to her confidence.

“I lost all of my confidence after ‘Mandalorian,’ all of it. I’ve always played two steps removed from myself, in a sense. It always felt grounded in some part of my belly, of who I was. Bo-Katan is nowhere near who I am as a human being. Her life, what she wants — I didn’t understand her. As much as I understood her, I never felt her in my stomach. I never identified with her. I didn’t know how to find her,...

Katee Sackhoff has opened up about how tough it was to play Bo-Katan Kryze in The Mandalorian, saying the role left her feeling broken and full of doubt.

Sackhoff has been the voice of Bo-Katan for years in Star Wars animated shows like The Clone Wars and Rebels. But when she stepped into live action in The Mandalorian season 2 and later became a main character in season 3, things changed for her in ways she didn’t expect.

Disney Could Break Warner Bros.’ Historic Box Office Record in 2026 (But One Movie Might Stop Them)
Image
Warner Bros. already made Hollywood history in 2025, becoming the first studio to release six consecutive films that all opened above $40 million at the domestic box office. This unprecedented streak, powered by hits like Superman, Sinners, A Minecraft Movie, F1: The Movie, Weapons, and Final Destination: Bloodlines, has reshaped expectations for blockbuster performance in an increasingly competitive market. Each film not only cleared the milestone but did so with strong momentum, setting a high bar for other major studios to match.

Now, eyes are turning to Disney, which in 2026 boasts one of its most ambitious theatrical slates in years. The lineup is a mix of long-awaited sequels, franchise-defining films, and bold new ventures,...

Andor Director Avoided Watching Star Wars Projects For Unique Vision
Image
One Andordirector admits that he was asked to avoid watching previous Star Wars projects. Coming after Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Andor was largely met with skepticism from fans when it was announced, who showed little interest in a TV show about a character from a standalone film. After its release, however, Andor achieved critical acclaim remarkably quickly.

Creator Tony Gilroy and leading man Diego Luna helped to bring the franchise to the forefront of the universe by focusing on the rebels, as opposed to conflict between the Jedi and Sith. It introduced a new perspective that was generally underexplored prior to Andor's release. It was so acclaimed that the show earned 22 Emmy nominations across both seasons.

In an interview with The Playlist,Andor director Janus Metz explained that the show had a unique approach, compared to other Star Wars projects. After speaking with Gilroy and an executive producer,...

Star Wars Movie Villains: A Complete List of All 17 Villains (Including 2027's Starfighter)
Image
Lucasfilm has reportedly cast Star Wars' 17th movie villain for 2027's Starfighter. Star Wars has a long history of producing the most iconic villains in movie history, from Darth Vader to Emperor Palpatine. While Disney has struggled to replicate the magic of the most legendary antagonists since acquiring Star Wars, the sequel trilogy struck up some popularity for Kylo Ren, aka Ben Solo.

While the Star Wars galaxy has increasingly expanded to TV thanks to Disney+, the franchise's true roots remain on the big screen. Lucasfilm has somewhat let go of those roots recently, having left an almost seven-year gap between 2019's The Rise of Skywalker and the franchise's next movie,...

Solo | Ron Howard reflects on the “creative impasse” that led him to direct the 2018 Star Wars spin-off
Image
Phil Lord and Chris Miller were replaced by Ron Howard during the production of Solo: A Star Wars Story. Howard’s since reflected on why it happened.

It’s almost a decade since the release of The Force Awakens – the first Star Wars movie following Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012. It’s fair to say the space fantasy franchise has had a number of ups and downs since then. One of the downs: during the production of 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were replaced by the more seasoned Ron Howard. Much of the footage already shot was reportedly scrapped.

In a recent interview with Vulture (via Variety), Howard has talked about the moment he was brought in to take over Solo and the “creative impasse” that led to it – according to his recollection, Lord and Miller were “gracious” about the situation,...

Ewan McGregor & Hayden Christensen's Advice for 'The Mandalorian's Grogu
Image
Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker have shared a few words of wisdom with The Mandalorian's Grogu ahead of his big-screen debut in The Mandalorian and Grogu. Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen are well-positioned to offer their advice and guidance to Din Djarin's adopted foundling, having spent so much time in the galaxy far, far away over the years, both in the Skywalker Saga and several Disney+ Star Wars shows such as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka, whereas the beloved Baby Yoda is still developing his Force abilities.

The two Star Wars legends reunited on stage at the Fan Expo Boston over the weekend, much to the delight of the fans in attendance and those watching coverage of the event from home — Grogu included, provided he wasn't too busy trying to eat frogs or playing with the Razor Crest's control stick. Why Pedro Pascal Left Zach Cregger's Weapons
Image
One would be hard-pressed to find a busier man in Hollywood than Pedro Pascal these days. The star of "The Mandalorian" and "Gladiator II" has been an ever-present force in both movies and TV over the last several years. That's a big reason why Warner Bros. and director Zach Cregger tapped him to topline the cast for the filmmaker's latest movie "Weapons," a follow-up to his 2022 breakout feature debut "Barbarian." Unfortunately, Pascal had to drop out of the movie before production began. But why?

In a recent interview with Variety, Cregger addressed Pascal's departure from "Weapons," revealing that the months-long 2023 Screen Actors Guild strike was to blame. "I had a whole different cast for this movie. And then we had the strike, and then Pedro Pascal's schedule threw us into turmoil. I had to recast the entire movie," the director said. Indeed, it wasn't just losing one cast member. Apparently,...

Pedro Pascal Is in Talks To Star in 'Andor' Creator Tony Gilroy's 'Behemoth!'
Image
Tony Gilroy may be about to reunite with a fellow Star Wars veteran for his next film. A new report from Deadline revealed that Pedro Pascal, fresh off his turn as Reed Richards in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, is in talks to lead Behemoth! from the writer-director. A deal has not been finalized, though all indications are that there should be no problems bringing the Mandalorian star aboard despite his very busy schedule. Searchlight Pictures recently joined the exciting new project as well, which is ramping up quickly as principal photography aims to begin this fall in Los Angeles.

Plot details are being kept well under wraps at this time, though the director has teased that Behemoth! will follow a cellist. Whatever the case, Gilroy's next project will have a lot of eyes on it. The future of Star Wars might be coming into place, and it could be good news to some, while worrisome to others. The franchise has several feature-length projects in the pipeline, with The Mandalorian & Grogu set for release in May 2026, followed by Starfighter in May 2027. While The Mandalorian & Grogu takes place in the period between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens in a series of interconnected stories fans call the Mandoverse, Starfighter will be the first Star Wars film set after The Rise of Skywalker. However, it seems another upcoming project will take fans into the future of a galaxy far, far away.

A new rumor, from scooper Daniel Ritchman (via Sff Gazette), suggests that the Daisy Ridley-led New Jedi Order film will jumpstart a new slate of movies for Lucasfilm. Disney reportedly is looking to tell a series of stories set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker,...

Gina Carano Settles Lawsuit With Disney, Lucasfilm Over ‘Mandalorian’ Firing
Image
Gina Carano has settled her lawsuit against Disney and Star Wars company Lucasfilm over her firing from The Mandalorian in 2021 following her controversial social media posts.

The former UFC star and actress, who portrayed Cara Dune on the first two seasons of the Disney+ series, was dropped from the show in February 2021 after a string of what Lucasfilm then called “abhorrent” social media posts. Three years later, in February 2024, Carano filed an Elon Musk-backed wrongful termination lawsuit against Disney and Lucasfilm.

In July 2024, a judge denied Disney’s bid to dismiss Carano’s lawsuit,...

With this lawsuit concluded, we look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future.

With the lawsuit in the rearview, the door is open for Carano to return to the galaxy far, far away. While Carano has missed out on the upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu movie, the proposed Rangers of the New Republic spin-off can finally be revived, and here is what you need to know about it.

Mandalorian movie will stick to formula that made series a worldwide phenomenon
Image
The Mandalorian and Grogu arrives in theaters in less than a year, and without an official trailer, fans have little information on the movie's plot. Recently, Mando's body double, Brendan Wayne, revealed what he believes fans can expect from the film.

Wayne says, “I think we go to the storytelling originally that we loved with The Mandalorian. We’re with the kid and Mando quite a bit, and their journey is forefront.”

This description aligns with what most fans predicted based on the finale of The Mandalorian Season 3. When the season ended, Din Djarin and Grogu were shown departing from Mandalore and settling down in a new home on Nevarro. At the time, some thought this might be the end, but it was the end of only one chapter of the duo's lives. With Grogu officially adopted by his Mandalorian father, they've officially become a family.

Before the show's finale,...

Matt Smith
Who Is New Star Wars Villain Matt Smith?
Matt Smith
You may have heard that actor Matt Smith has recently been cast as a villain in Star Wars: Starfighter, starring opposite Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth. Starfighter will be released on May 28, 2027. This marks the second theatrical release after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, following director Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian and Grogu, which is planned for May 22, 2026.

Smith is no stranger to playing the villain, and with a multitude of alien races in the Star Wars universe, it’s hard to know how he'll show up as he faces off against Gosling. So, who is Matt Smith? Here are some of the actor's most well-known roles, pulled from his IMDb page.

Doctor Who

In the long-running BBC science fiction series, a relatively unknown Smith landed the coveted title role as the Eleventh Doctor after David Tennant's exit from the show in 2010. His primary run as Doctor Who spanned Seasons 5, 6, and 7.

The Crown

In 2018, Smith earned his first Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Prince Philip in the Netflix series "The Crown."

House of the Dragon

Smith is most recently known for embodying the ruthless Prince Daemon Targaryen on HBO’s "Game of Thrones" spin-off "House of the Dragon." He is slated to return for Season 3 of the series, which is currently in production.

Last Night in Soho

Director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) cast Smith in his psychological horror film Last Night in Soho, also starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Thomasin McKenzie.

Morbius

As part of Sony's extended Spider-Man universe, Smith took another villain role in 2022's Morbius, playing opposite Jared Leto.

House of the Dragon and Doctor Who star to join the Star Wars universe
Image
Rumor has it that there's a new villain being cast in the next standalone entry in the Star Wars universe. Star Wars: Starfighter has a scheduled release date of May 28, 2027. The upcoming movie stars Ryan Gosling and is directed by Shawn Levy. The film takes place five to six years after The Rise of Skywalker and now looks to be adding a new villain to the mix.

A New Star Wars Adventure

Director Shawn Levy directed the recently heralded Deadpool & Wolverine and the lesser known but no less entertaining The Adam Project. Writer Jonathan Tropper (who also worked on The Adam Project) joins him at the helm of Star Wars: Starfighter.

“We’re fans too,” Levy said to an exuberant crowd at the Star Wars Celebration. “There’s obviously a relationship between these stories and the audience, but we’ve spent our lives in that audience. We know how meaningful it is.

James Mangold Reportedly Shuns 'Star Wars' & Dcu Movies Again for Timothee Chalamet Motocross Movie
Image
There are some big movies waiting for James Mangold to make some availability in his schedule, with Dcu’s Swamp Thing and Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi movies being two of the most prominent – and already delayed – on the list. However, according to Deadline, fans will have to wait even longer to see either of these movies begin production as Mangold is reportedly eyeing another movie with Timothée Chalamet first.

Mangold and Chalamet scored a hit with the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown last year, and now it looks like they will be collaborating again on High Side, a motocross-themed heist thriller drawn from an unpublished Jaime Oliveira short story and now being shopped by Chernin Entertainment. The reports, which are still only suggested at this point, describe the story as being centered on a fallen MotoGP prodigy named Billy who is lured into a string of bank robberies by his estranged brother,...

Matt Smith Lands Villain Role In Star Wars: Starfighter Opposite Ryan Gosling
Image
Matt Smith's Infinity Gauntlet of nerdy IP is about to add another stone — and this one's coming from a galaxy far, far away. Yes, having made bow ties cool with his stint as Doctor Who's Eleventh Doctor, donned the blonde as Daemon Targaryen in House Of The Dragon, thrown some shapes as bloodsucker Milo in Spumc's Morbius, and been a T-5000 in Terminator Genisys, Smith is getting ready to make the jump to lightspeed for Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter. Per Deadline's reporting, Smith has landed a villainous role opposite Ryan Gosling's heroic lead in the Deadpool & Wolverine filmmaker's first Star Wars feature.

As we learned at this year's Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, Starfighter — described specifically and repeatedly by Levy as "a standalone adventure with all-new characters" — is the first Star Wars film set after the events of The Rise Of Skywalker, with...

Matt Smith Boards Star Wars: Starfighter as Gosling’s On-Screen Adversary
Matt Smith
Actor Matt Smith is heading to the galaxy far, far away, joining director Shawn Levy’s standalone feature Star Wars: Starfighter as one of the film’s chief antagonists opposite lead star Ryan Gosling.

Sources close to the production state that Smith’s character will partner—though not necessarily align—with the previously announced villain role played by Mia Goth, giving Gosling’s unnamed hero a “duo of pursuers.” Script duties fall to Jonathan Tropper, while Lucasfilm has fixed a theatrical launch date of May 28 2027, positioning the project as the next big-screen chapter after The Mandalorian & Grogu lands in 2026.

Levy, speaking to People in April, described pairing Gosling’s “uniquely cool ethos” with Star Wars as “a recipe that makes the galaxy better and cooler,” adding that the story sits a few years after the Battle of Exegol yet is “neither prequel nor sequel.” Gosling echoed that enthusiasm at Star Wars Celebration Japan,...

Matt Smith Cast as ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ Villain Opposite Ryan Gosling
Image
“Doctor Who” alum Matt Smith is set to join the galaxy far, far away in “Star Wars: Starfighter,” starring Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth and hitting theaters Memorial Day Weekend 2027.

Details are light on Smith’s role and the plot of the film, which will be directed by Shawn Levy (“Deadpool & Wolverine”) from a script by Jonathan Tropper. But Smith is reported to play a villain in the film, which will be set five years after the events of Disney/Lucasfilm’s sequel trilogy, which ended with “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” in 2019.

Since that film, Disney has not released a “Star Wars” movie in theaters, opting for a series of Disney+ shows that have ranged in reception from the critically acclaimed “Andor” to the fan-maligned “The Acolyte.” The first of those streaming series, “The Mandalorian,” will get a theatrical film follow-up with “The Mandalorian & Grogu” in...

Morrison Rallies Fans to Revive Boba Fett
Temuera Morrison
Temuera Morrison has urged Star Wars devotees to “send a fax, or a letter, or an email” to Lucasfilm so he can suit up as Boba Fett again, telling a Tampa Bay Comic Convention audience that no new projects are on his calendar and that fan pressure might change that. The actor said he treasures every appearance, yet remains “hungry for another chance” after The Book of Boba Fett wrapped in early 2022 without a renewal.

Asked whether muted critical reaction hurt prospects, he replied that only Lucasfilm knows, while co-panelist Daniel Logan joked that Morrison already holds the franchise record for most personas—from Jango and Boba to an army of clones—and deserves at least one more. Online sentiment is with him: the 29-year-old Boba Fett Fan Club and hashtags like #BringBackBoba have circulated template emails targeting studio executives since his comments surfaced.

We Finally Know Exactly What's Slowly Killing Marvel, Star Wars, And Pixar
Image
Though it may not come as a big surprise, a new report has revealed that Disney+ greatly harmed the Marvel Studios, "Star Wars," and Pixar brands in recent years. The rise of streaming was accelerated in 2020 largely in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, which shut down theaters all over the world. The Mouse House had already launched Disney+, but the circumstances forced the company to double down. That may have helped it get a leg-up in the streaming game initially, but it came at the expense of some of the studio's biggest brands.

A new report by The Wrap has dived deep into the topic, revealing the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the "Star Wars" franchise, and the animation powerhouse Pixar have all suffered as a result of Disney+. It's a complicated issue but, in short, Disney+ created too much of what was once a scarce thing and made it accessible to...

Star Wars Is Returning to Theaters 50 Years Later, But There's a Pretty Major Catch
Image
Star Wars is heading back to theaters. Disney has announced today that the beloved sci-fi masterpiece will be re-released on the big screen in 2027.

Per Variety, Disney has set an April 30, 2027, release date for the Star Wars 50th anniversary re-release. Unfortunately, despite Lucasfilm recently hosting a screening of the original print of 1977's Star Wars at a British Film Institute event, the version that will be re-released in 2027 will be the 1997 Special Edition. The Star Wars Special Edition, created for the movie's 20th anniversary, was digitally remastered and features visual shots and scenes that franchise creator George Lucas was unable to achieve back in 1977 due to financial, technological, and time constraints. The Special Edition is perhaps best known for altering who "shot first" in the scene between Han Solo and bounty hunter Greedo, a controversial change that fans are still not happy Lucas made.

‘Star Wars: A New Hope’ Will Get 50th Anniversary Theatrical Re-Release in 2027
Image
The movie that started the Skywalker saga and arguably created Hollywood’s franchise frenzy is flying back into theaters. “Star Wars: A New Hope” will return to the big screen on April 30, 2027, to mark the film’s 50th anniversary.

Disney, which purchased LucasFilm in 2012 and with it the rights to the “Star Wars” series in 2012 for $4 billion, announced the planned re-release on Friday. The company also said that it would debut “Whalefall,” an adaptation of the novel by Daniel Kraus, on October 16, 2026. The survival thriller is directed by Brian Duffield, stars Austin Abrams and Josh Brolin and will be released by 20th Century Studios. The film is about a scuba diver who is swallowed by a sperm whale.

Disney’s plans to bring “Star Wars” back to theaters were something of an open secret, but the studio had yet to formalize them. It will be a big anniversary year for the space opera franchise.

Star Wars Announces General Grievous’ Return In 2026 Prequel Story
Image
Star Wars announced General Grievous' long-awaited return to the galaxy far, far away, as part of a new 2026 prequel story. Despite having only appeared in a single Star Wars movie (as well as several Lucasfilm TV series), Grievous has become one of the most popular names of the Prequel era. The last time fans saw the saber-wielding cyborg was in a brief cameo in 2024's Tales of the Empire, but luckily, those itching for more of Grievous will get it.

As announced during Lucasfilm Publishing's San Diego Comic-Con panel, General Grievous is coming back in a big way in 2026. While it is exciting that fans will be getting more Grievous in literary form, his future on the big or small screen remains to be seen with big names like Ahsoka Season 2 and The Mandalorian & Grogu coming down the pipeline.

A new comic book prequel centered on General Grievous has been announced by Lucasfilm Publishing.
