[Editor’s note: this list was originally published in August 2024. It has since been updated with new entries, including “Black Bag.”]
When director Todd Field sat down and wrote his film “Tár,” there was only one option to play the title character. As he described to IndieWire in an interview, the film wouldn’t have been made if Cate Blanchett hadn’t agreed to take the part of lauded conductor Lydia Tár. “I had no backup plan,” he told IndieWire. “I’d met Cate 10 years ago and I knew coming out of that meeting that I had just been in conversation with somebody that had one of the great brains I ever met. And it was someone that I was really, really desperate to be able to collaborate with.”
It might seem silly to hinge your entire film on the participation of a single actor; the Australian Blanchett doesn’t share any notable biographical details with the fictional American conductor that makes her casting meaningful in a meta sense.

Over turmeric tea one evening, double Oscar winner Cate Blanchett talks about the secret of relationships and how to survive the current news cycle. The answer? Jump into the ice…
Cate Blanchett saw in the New Year in the Arctic, with her husband and four children, by cutting a hole in the ice and jumping in. It was -30C and she wore a “funny hat” for the cold and, “It was fabulous,” because, she says, “Everything… paused.” It’s February now, and the restaurant near the river is just beginning to fill with evening diners when Blanchett slides between the tables in her tartan “chicken feeding coat” and striped shirt, collar popped. “Who are they murdering out the back?” she shouts – the noise of dough being pounded in the kitchen sounds as if they’re beating somebody to death and means we need to lean in, over her pot of turmeric tea.

Cate Blanchett “never, ever” thought she “could work in the film industry.”
“I was resigned, happily, to a career in theater. I didn’t think I was that girl. There was a sense women had a certain ‘shelf life’ in the film industry and a certain type of women got to parade on the screen and others didn’t,” she said at the Rotterdam Film Festival Saturday.
Watching Visconti’s “The Stranger” awakened her love for the cinema.
“Our French teacher took us to see it. I learnt more about cinema than I did about French. I don’t think I’ve seen it since, but I was hypnotized by the cinematic storytelling. Also, we grew up in such an incredible moment in Australian cinema-making. I remember watching ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock,’ ‘Sweetie,’ ‘An Angel at My Table.’ I thought: ‘Maybe I will be able to step into that frame...

Actress-producer Cate Blanchett and director Guy Maddin shared about their paths into the film industry as well as their experiences of “flow” in making art, while at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR). They took the stage in front of more than 800 guests at the Oude Luxor Theater, shortly after a festival screening of their film Rumours.
“I never, ever thought I could work in the film industry,” said Blanchett. “I was resigned happily to having a career in the theater. I didn’t think that I was that girl, and at the time, there was certainly a sense that women had a certain shelf life in the film industry, and a certain type of woman got to parade on screen. Fleetwood Mac's "Silver Springs" is one of their most popular songs, especially among Gen Z, but what is the story behind the 1977 track? Lead singer Stevie Nicks has been known for her female rage songs long before Taylor Swift took over the music industry. Swift even referenced the singer in her song "Clara Bow" from The Tortured Poets Department. However, Nicks's breakup songs were even more powerful when she was a part of Fleetwood Mac, and the band's lore was strong enough to inspire Taylor Jenkins Reid to write Daisy Jones & The Six.
Younger generations became acquainted with the band's history when Reid's novel was adapted into an Amazon Prime series starring Elvis Presley's granddaughter, Riley Keough. The Stevie Nicks-esque party girl had a connection with her bandmate, Billy Dunne, similar to Nicks's real-life romance with her bandmate, Lindsey Buckingham. Much of Fleetwood Mac's lore is connected to that romance,...

Joshua Oppenheimer’s “The End” revolves around an apocalyptic scenario in which a wealthy family lives in an underground bunker two decades after the apparent end of the world. It is not the only 2024 film that explores a catastrophic global crisis. Guy Maddin and Johnson brothers’ “Rumours” also highlighted the hypocrisy of those with wealth and power misusing it while being complacent about their minor noble deeds. Oppenheimer’s film uses the absence of an exterior world to highlight certain aspects of this family’s interior lives. Instead of calling its characters by their names, the writer refers to them by their roles in the context of their isolated setting. So, in this story, they are just friends, doctors, mothers, or girls – depending on what they represent in their isolated world.

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2024, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
As always, what is considered best is first determined by what can be seen, and this year there were many films that I missed. When it came to popular releases, for example, some took too long to be released in the UK; some were showing while I was reviewing other films; and others just simply passed me by. And the same problems were even more pronounced when it came to watching short/experimental films. Nevertheless, there was much that I enjoyed this year, and several films that did not make the final cut might well do so if I were to make the list again at a later date. I hope that my current selection will point you towards something informative and/or entertaining, and that it will add,...

Instead of commissioning a new gown for the occasion, Cate recycled a Louis Vuitton dress, which she previously wore to the premiere of her movie Rumours during the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
This time around, she wore her hair in a sleek bob and kept her accessories minimal. However, she also amped up the detailing around her neckline to add even more visual interest.

Fleetwood Mac Star Christine McVie’s Shocking Descent Into Drug-Fueled Orgies & Rock and Roll Excess
The image is iconic: Christine McVie, the ethereal voice and keyboardist of Fleetwood Mac, her blonde hair cascading down her shoulders, captivating audiences with her soulful melodies. But behind the glamorous facade lay a tumultuous journey marked by excess, addiction, and a profound sense of loneliness.
In my new biography, “Songbird: An Intimate Biography of Christine McVie,” I delve into the life and career of this legendary musician, exploring the dark underbelly of fame and the devastating impact of rock and roll excess on her personal life.
McVie, a talented musician who initially pursued a career as an art teacher, found herself thrust into the limelight with the meteoric rise of Fleetwood Mac. The band’s 1977 album, “Rumours,” a raw and emotionally charged reflection of their personal and professional turmoil, became a global phenomenon.

Politics and the apocalypse collide in Rumours – a horror satire that threatens to steal Megalopolis’ crown as 2024’s most eccentric movie.
When Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis came out earlier this year, opinions were somewhat divided as to whether it was a grand folly, a visionary masterpiece, a piece of demented high camp, or a mixture of all of these.
What most could agree on was that there was nothing else quite like it in 2024’s line-up of movies, whether it was in its unnatural dialogue and bizarre character names (Aubrey Plaza as financial TV reporter Wow Platinum) or its incredibly uneven visuals, which veered from the captivatingly imaginative to the embarrassingly kitsch.
For better or worse, Coppola had managed to finally achieve his goal of creating a vision of the USA as a late Roman empire in danger of tipping over into facism. Which, as 2024 nears its end, now...

Rumours may have a mundane name, but this jet black horror comedy is one of the most insane films you will see all year – just don’t expect to understand it.
Set at the G7 summit in Dankwarderode Castle in Germany we meet the men and women who lead the most powerful countries on the planet. Assembling together to work on a provisional statement for the present crisis they eat, drink and pose for photos in the picturesque grounds of the ancient and eerie local.
Hosted by Hilda Ortmann (Cate Blanchet), the Chancellor of Germany we also meet elderly and oddly English accented Edison Wolcott (Game of Thrones and Alien 3’s Charles Dance), the President of the United States; poetic wannabe intellectual Sylvain Broulez (Inglorious Basterds Denis Ménochet), the President of France; practical and pragmatic Cardosa Dewindt (Nikki Amuka – Bird from Old and Knock on the Cabin), the Prime...

As 2024 winds to a close, film fans and critics alike begin to assemble their best of the year lists. And what list would be complete without at least one surprising entry, a film that sticks out like a sore thumb from its brethren. That's certainly the case with John Waters, the Pope of Trash himself and the creator of such gloriously quirky and even disgusting cinematic experiences, like Pink Flamingos, Hairspray, and Serial Mom.
The filmmaker released his annual top 10 list via Vulture, and amid some of the more expected titles, coming in at number six is Todd Phillips' much-maligned musical sequel Joker: Folie à Deux. It's not impossible, but the likelihood the vehicle for Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga will make many any other best-of lists this year is pretty slim. It boasts both a 32% critics and audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with Glenn Kenney of RogerEbert.com saying...

What could be stranger than the hollow pomp of neoliberal politics in the face of Armageddon? While crafting this cheerfully bonkers satire, Canadian co-directors Guy Maddin and Evan and Galen Johnson became fascinated by real footage of G7 leaders coming across a puddle and awkwardly negotiating walking around it. This miniature farce didn’t exactly offer much hope for the future of humanity.

Producers of the Broadway play Stereophonic have settled a lawsuit brought by former Fleetwood Mac sound engineer and producer Ken Caillat.
In the initial suit, filed in the Southern District Court of New York in October, Caillat and his co-author Steven Stiefel alleged that the script of Stereophonic took copyrighted material from their 2012 book Making Rumours to create the play, which won the 2024 Tony Award for best play.
The parties have resolved the dispute “in principle” and said in a court filing earlier this week that two parties were working to finalize the settlement and get it in writing. The exact terms of the settlement were not disclosed.
In the suit, Caillat and Stiefel alleged that scenes in the play were “substantially similar” to passages from the book and say the premise of setting the play in the recording studio, with the audience having the point of view of the sound engineer,...

With artificial intelligence on the rise, Cate Blanchett fears it poses a threat beyond just Hollywood.
The 2x Oscar winner recently admitted she’s “deeply concerned” about the impact AI will have on the entertainment industry, as well as the rest of the world, with the potential to “totally replace anyone.”
“It’s a very public-facing industry we’re in, and I think the discussions around AI were not mainstreamed until the writers’ strike, really brought into the public discourse,” she told BBC. “So, I think it’s very real.”
Blanchett added of AI, “I just look at these things and think, ‘I don’t really know what it’s bringing anybody.’ Sometimes, it’s just experimentation for its own sake, which is creativity when you look at it one way. But then it’s also incredibly destructive, which of course, is the other side of creativity.”

Peacock announced this morning that its psychological horror thriller Speak No Evil, starring James McAvoy, will begin streaming exclusively on the platform on December 6.
The film drew quite positive reviews in its September release — no easy feat for an English-language remake of a recent, highly lauded international title — and grossed over $76 million worldwide. Hailing from Blumhouse and Universal Pictures, it adapts Christian Tafdrup’s Danish pic of the same name, released in 2022.
The story follows Americans Ben (Scoot McNairy) and Louise (Mackenzie Davis), who after befriending a British couple with a mute son, accept an unusual invitation to bring their daughter for a weekend at an idyllic country estate. Yet when they discover their hosts are hiding sinister motives, Ben and Louise fear their family may be pawns in a disturbing plot. Led by McAvoy as a charismatic man masking unspeakable darkness, a dream holiday warps into an unnerving nightmare.

The “Rumours” are true: Apple TV+ is making a Fleetwood Mac documentary.
The streaming service’s Apple Original Films unit announced Tuesday that director Frank Marshall is making a fully-authorized documentary in which the members of the iconic rock band will tell their story in their own words for the first time ever. The film will feature previously unseen footage, exclusive new interviews, and archival interviews with the late Christine McVie.
“I am fascinated by how this incredible story of enormous musical achievement came about,” Marshall said in a statement. “Fleetwood Mac somehow managed to merge their often chaotic and almost operatic personal lives into their own tale in real time, which then became legend. This will be a film about the music and the people who created it.”

Guy Maddin’s “Rumours” (2024), co-directed by Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson, is a satire so absurd and farcical that it almost deliberately tries to pivot away from making too deep a point, choosing instead to delve into the silliness of the entire endeavor and highlight the stupidity of the administrators responsible for running the world. And that’s before Maddin brings in his signature nonsensical elements into the film, the big brain on a patch of field becoming a curious signature for a director comfortable in unconventional narratives.

Calling Guy Maddin’s 2024 film, Rumours, a convoluted and absurd satire would be an understatement, considering that the very appeal of the work is based on lowbrow comedy delivered through extremely unreal circumstances. The plot of this unique film follows the leaders of the G7 countries meeting at a convention of the forum to discuss some international crisis when they get lost in the woods and are haunted by mummified bodies from centuries ago. Rumours is surely not to everyone’s taste, but there is just enough entertainment for those who enjoy absurd and spoofy satires.

Daisy Jones & The Six season 2 news is circulating, despite the first season being presented as a limited series. Prime Video's Daisy Jones & The Six is based on the novel of the same name by Taylor Jenkins Reid, a book loosely based on Fleetwood Mac and their recording of the album Rumours. Daisy Jones & The Six season 1 showcased the band in the 1970s and their rise in the Los Angeles music scene. They eventually became one of the biggest bands in the world and then split up at the height of their success.
While the first season of Daisy Jones & The Six told a pretty self-contained story, there is a lot of interest in Daisy Jones & The Six season 2. Daisy Jones & The Six received positive reviews and picked up several nominations at the Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Outstanding Lead Actress for Riley Keough,...

It is fitting that for the 30th year of the Geneva International Film Festival, artistic director Anais Emery and her team are going back to the future.
“It was very important to recall the history of the festival but not through a retrospective,” says Emery of the event that takes place in the Swiss city from November 1-10.
”We wanted to renew, to celebrate and underline Giff’s speciality and specificity.”
That means showcasing innovative storytelling delivered via the myriad audiovisual mediums available to creators, from film, TV and web content to installations, virtual reality and extended reality (Xr) works.

Directors Evan Johnson, Galen Johnson and Guy Maddin’s dark comedy Rumours portrays the situation of the inner workings of Western leadership in a time of crisis as a farcical satire, as comfortable played out on screen as perhaps on stage. As consistently sharp and witty as the dialogue is from its hapless leaders procrastinating over a joint statement of collective action in the middle of a German forest, it also is sobering, thought-provoking and timely in current unsettled times globally. The latter forever plays on the mind, even when presented with surreal moments that include the discovery of a giant live brain parked in the undergrowth.

Alicia Vikander will lead Rachel Rose’s debut film “The Last Day” alongside Victoria Pedretti and Wagner Moura.
The film, which wrapped production in New York in October, follows a writer and mother who confronts her lack of creative purpose and embarks on a journey of rediscovering herself after encountering figures from her past.

Cate Blanchett has been part of various successful movies, but her latest project, Rumours, just broke a horrible Rotten Tomatoes record that even her previous movie, Borderlands, avoided. Rumours was meant to be Cate Blanchett's big 2024 redemption movie, but it currently has a worse Rotten Tomatoes score than Borderlands. Borderlands was one of the biggest box office and critical failures of the year, with many fans of Cate Blanchett being surprised that she was involved in the film. Rumors was seen as a return to form for the actress after Borderlands, but the Rotten Tomatoes score of the film suggests otherwise.
2024's Rumors is a dark comedy that follows a group of powerful world leaders as they become lost in the woods and must fight against several horrors in order to survive. The cast of Rumours is impressive, with it featuring Cate Blanchett as well as critically acclaimed performers like Charles Dance and Roy Dupuis. While Rumours has struck a chord with critics, this isn't the case for audeinces, as the film's Rotten Tomatoes score shows.

Canadian filmmakers Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson lampoon the world's most powerful people in Rumours, a spooky and hilariously bonkers satire of the G7 (Group of Seven) - a political organization consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the non-enumerated European Union. The venerated cast, including Cate Blanchett, Alicia Vikander, Charles Dance, Roy Dupuis, and Denis Mnochet, portray the G7 leaders as inept bureaucrats lost in a German forest without any support. They're so embroiled in drafting a comical "provisional statement" that an apocalyptic scenario catches them completely by surprise.

In Rumours, a genre-defying work set at an imagined G7 summit, the United States president might seem as sleepy as the media caricature of Joe Biden. Yet Charles Dance’s incarnation of a figure embodying such stately authority also inexplicably speaks with a British accent. This slippery distinction between reality and surrealism provides a sure sign that the film came from the mind of iconoclastic director Guy Maddin, who co-directed and wrote the project with his former students, Evan and Galen Johnson.
At every step of the way, Rumours thwarts and confounds expectations that this convening of fictional world leaders at a gazebo in the German forest will ever shift into standard political satire. Diplomacy quickly fades from being subject to serving as a mere backdrop to absurdist horror-comedy. Diplomacy quickly fades from being subject to serving as a mere backdrop to absurdist horror-comedy. As the seven leaders retreat into the forest under the guidance of their host, German Chancellor Hilda Orlmann (Cate Blanchett), their...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review for
“Rumours” the latest film from Canadian director Guy Madden (with Evan and Galen Johnson), a political satire/surrealist story about the geopolitical international G7 Conference. In select theaters since October 18th See local listings.
Set at the economic G7 conference, which is attended by the main democratic/progressive economies, including host Germany (represented by Cate Blanchett), the U.S.(Charles Dance), Canada (Roy Dupuis), France (Denis Menochet) and the other player countries of Britain, Italy and Japan. As an unnamed world crisis begins to infiltrate the talks, a weird Iron Age archeology discovery comes to life and a giant human brain with unspecific powers … both near the meeting site … also causes havoc. Is this the end of the world as we know it?

Canadian director Guy Maddin embraces absurdity. Along with his co-writers and directors Evan and Galen Johnson, Maddin has added to his surrealist oeuvre with Rumours, a comedy satirizing the G7 Summit. Bringing together a lauded cast led by Cate Blanchett playing the Chancellor of Germany, the film follows the seven world leaders as they get lost in the woods amidst a world catastrophe and simultaneously lose their minds.
As with any G7 Summit, the goal continues to be a vague “crisis” and an even vaguer “statement,” a cacophony of empty words, promises, and goals. The supporting cast are game, with Denis Ménochet shining as the President of France, and the filmmakers even choosing a very British Charles Dance to play the U.S. President. Everyone seems to be game; the subsequent film is better for it, with the interplay between these leaders providing the funniest moments. When these leaders attempt to find common ground,...

For theaters still in shock over the historic collapse of “Joker: Folie à Deux” (Warner Bros.), there’s optimism with the “Smile 2” opening of $23 million and Sean Baker’s strong award contender “Anora” (Neon) becoming the year’s best platform debut. (Baker’s also joining IndieWire’s Future of Filmmaking Summit November 2.)
In its third weekend, Todd Phillips’ film grossed under $2.2 million to drop another 69 percent and place sixth. With $56.4 million in, its domestic gross will fall short of $65 million. Bad for the studio and worse for the theaters that counted on another $135 million or so in box office revenue (and accompanying concessions).
With “Smile 2,” Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror success inched slightly ahead of the original’s opening weekend, which went on to gross $90 million. “Smile 2” will have a hard time replicating that, particularly with “Venom: The Last Dance” (Sony) debuting this Friday.

A directing duo is somewhat of a rare thing in Hollywood. Apart from The Wachowskis and a handful of brothers, its not a particularly common thing. Having a directing trio? Well, thats even rarer, though Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson have certainly seemed to figure out how to make it work, collaborating on 2017s The Green Fog and, most recently, Rumours.

This review was originally published during the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
Canadian directing trio Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson first partnered together with their 2017 experimental film, The Green Fog. Reuniting to present their latest film at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, the directors put together a star-studded cast for a ridiculous, surreal comedy about world leaders encountering a global crisis while getting lost in the woods. As absurd as it sounds, Rumours begins as a hilarious commentary about power on a global scale. However, as the film progresses, it loses its steam thanks to vague storytelling and less successful humor by the end.
