Captivating and compelling!

Today I had a chance to see an early screening of the new horror film, Huggin Molly, written and directed by Connor Flynn. This movie, which will be released to the public for streaming on YouTube next week, centers around Benny as he travels to the small town of Abbeville, AL to look for his sister who has gone missing. Soon after arriving in town, Benny learns about the legend of Huggin Molly and joins forces with aspiring student film maker, Roberto, to both find Benny's sister, but also uncover the truth behind the legend.

After watching this film, I decided to do a little research and found out that Huggin Molly is a real legend in the town of Abbeville, AL. Legend has it that if she catches you out and about after dark, that she will wrap you up in a hug and scream in your ear. This low budget found footage film has its fair share of flaws. For one, the audio is shotty at times and the dialogue itself did not flow very well. The acting performances are not great, and yet, I could not keep my eyes off the screen. Connor Flynn did a really good job of creating a story inspired by real-life folklore that is captivating, compelling, and even pretty scary at times. I more than once jumped when Huggin Molly came on the screen, and I thought that it was a really cool idea to show various real-life depictions of Huggin Molly during the end credits, along with playing 911 audio clips while the credits rolled which I found especially chilling.

Huggin Molly will be released for streaming on YouTube just in time for Halloween with hopes to stream on Tubi and I recommend adding this one to your spooky season playlist. With only 54 mins of total runtime, the story gets going immediately and does a good job of keeping the viewer engaged.

Solid low budget filmmaking

Huggin Molly is an impressive low budget found footage horror movie with fun characters, great setting and a story that keeps moving forward. The clear difference between the cozy college and desolate Alabama ghost town was effective. The mysterious people and crumbling town made it feel that help was no where close.

The abandoned locations and dark forest became characters themselves. Knowing that Abbeville and the legend of Huggin Molly were really things made the experience very immersive.

Great witch make up, fun lore, and creepy sounds made this a solid entry to the genre. Can see the obvious Blair Witch influence but this film has does its own thing.

Real Alabama Urban Legend

Cool to see the famous Alabama urban legend brought to life on the big screen. Everyone that has driven up through the rural countryside remembers seeing the Abbeville city sign with the ghost of Huggin Molly chasing the children. There is even a restaurant in town named after the story and all the locals know not to stay out in the town after dark or the witch will snatch you up and squeeze you til your bones break.

The movie moves quickly and follows two main characters looking for a girl that goes missing on the side of the road. The best parts are when the witch shows up but the journey was creepy and enjoyable. Highly reccomend for people that love urban legends, especially if you are from the south.

Streaming on youtube.
