Coco Jones Expands ‘Why Not More?’ Album With, What Else? More
Image
Playwright Anton Chekhov believed that if you place a gun onstage in the first act of a production, it had better go off in the second, and Coco Jones believes that if you’re going to title an album, Why Not More? you damn well better have more to offer. Only a week has passed since the former Disney star issued her debut album and she has already put out an expanded reissue, Why Not More? (Extended), which contains three bonus tracks. So it’s not just, more, More, More!

'We've Talked About It': Kelly Marie Tran on Possible Return as Rose Tico in New Star Wars Project
Image
Daisy Ridley is soon returning as Rey in a follow-up to the Star Wars sequel trilogy, and this development may have fans of the franchise wondering which other returning stars could be joining her in the future. One possibility is for Kelly Marie Tran to reprise her role as Rose Tico, and given her continued love for Star Wars, Tran herself would love to see this happen.

Tran commented on a possible Star Wars return during a new interview with Grae Drake of Cbr to promote her latest movie, The Wedding Banquet, which premieres on April 18. While the Star Wars sequel trilogy had been very polarizing with fans when the three installments were released, they have been getting increased love in more recent years, which includes more appreciation shown for characters like Rose.

"I have so much love and gratitude for that universe and that world," Tran said. "[tt0107156 autoWedding Banquet...

‘Control Freak’ Movie Cast and Characters Guide
Image
Director Shal Ngo’s latest psychological horror movie, Control Freak, blends elements of body horror and creature horror to outline the trappings of the mind. Presenting a literal manifestation of a depressed, tormented psyche in the form of a hideous, monstrous creature, the movie goes to great lengths to showcase different aspects of the gradual degradation of mental health and how our own toxic tendencies propagate it. Playing the lead character, Kelly Marie Tran does all the heavy lifting as there was very little scope provided for other characters to shine. Despite that being the case, the talented supporting cast of Control Freak delivers memorable performances according to the demands of the narrative.

Kelly Marie Tran Explains Their Turn to the Horror Genre
Image
Actor Kelly Marie Tran had never led a straight-up horror movie, and now she's doing two. The first of which is Shal Ngo's recently released Control Freak, which is streaming on Hulu. Tran plays a motivational speaker and self-help guru whose family history starts to manifest in some disturbing ways. After that is the upcoming horror thriller Rock Springs, by director Vera Miao. According to Deadline, "The plot centers on a grieving young girl who, along with her mother and grandmother, moves to Rock Springs, Wy, after the death of her father, only to discover there is something monstrous hidden in the town’s history and the woods behind their new house." Tran spoke with MovieWeb about her turn toward horror.

"They are very different," said Tran of the two films. "You know, I don't think I can say too much about [Rock Springs], but I will say the...

‘Control Freak’ Movie Ending Explained & Full Story: Did Valerie Finally Get Free From Her Curse?
Image
Good horror movies have a way of peeping into the uncharted territories of our minds—the space that we want to keep hidden from the rest of the world—either in fear of judgment or in recognition of our own insecurities and imperfections. Body horror movies go a step further into this exploration of our psychological vulnerabilities by tapping into something primal, as seen in some memorable recent releases like Smile, The Substance, A Different Man, etc. Hulu’s recent release, Control Freak, a body/psychological horror that delineates the undoing of the human mind, proves to be another well-made entry to the genre. Even though, like most original horror releases in recent years, the scare factor isn’t really there and the narrative twists and turns aren’t completely out of the box. Still, backed with good acting, navigating themes like the futility of warfare, generational trauma, and the importance of mental health,...

Control Freak Review: Body Horror that goes an unexpected route
Image
Last Updated on March 17, 2025

Plot: A motivational speaker is tormented by an unrelenting itch on the back of her head.

Review: Body horror is all the rage right now and thankfully, with so many films being released every year, some are able to capitalize on the trend. I’ve been of several of the Hulu Horror ventures like The Mill and Mr. Crocket, so I’m excited to see another release from them. And the fact that it’s body horror is all the more intriguing. Because there are always plenty of different avenues to take a film that relies on making your skin crawl. Control Freak combines the metaphorical with a real life monster to give us a very unique experience.

Control Freak follows motivational speaker Val, as she finds herself being tormented by an itch on her head that won’t go away. With a complicated family history,...

Control Freak Star Kelly Marie Tran On Scratching The Most Challenging Itch Of Her Career (Exclusive)
Image
With Control Freak now streaming on Hulu, we were recently able to catch up with director Shal Ngo (The Park; Bite Size Halloween) and stars Kelly Marie Tran (Raya and the Last Dragon; Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi) and Miles Robbins (Blockers; Halloween) to talk about their brand new body horror film that's guaranteed to send a chill down your spine.

In the film, Kelly Marie Tran plays a motivational speaker who is tormented by an unrelenting itch on the back of her head, which ultimately leads to the most devastating of showdowns with something not of this world.

Talking with the trio, they tell me more about where the idea for the film originated, how Tran was able to tackle one of the most challenging roles of her career, how both Ngo and Robbins were able to help her get in the right headspace, and a whole lot more.

‘Control Freak’ Review: An Average Horror Excursion With A Dedicated Kelly Marie Tran
Image
“If there is an itch, one does want to scratch, but it is much nicer to have neither the itch nor the scratch.” – C. S. Lewis. The production logos preceding Shal Ngo’s latest “Control Freak” have barely begun to fade before Kelly Marie Tran, center stage both literally and figuratively as motivational speaker Val, moves her hand to the back of her head, where a pesky itch resides.

‘Control Freak’ Movie Spoilers And Summary: Who Killed Val’s Mother And Father?
Image
Directed by Shal Ngo, Control Freak is an important film that needs to be understood and felt. Over the years, there have been many films that have talked about mental health issues, either by personifying them into an evil entity and giving them physical form or addressing them through various symbolic figures. However, what Shal Ngo does differently is that he executes the narrative in a subtle manner that is worthy of appreciation. He does not make things obvious; he does not make the storyline mundane, and then the best part is that he keeps the audience guessing till the very last moment. So, let’s find out what happened in the film and if the monster that haunted our protagonist existed in real life or not.

Spoiler Alert

What was happening with Val?

Val aka Valerie was a famous motivational speaker who taught people how to be in better control of their minds.

‘Control Freak’ Ending Explained: Did Val’s Husband, Robbie, Leave Her?
Image
Control Freak’s ending was all about confirming whether the demon that had seemingly latched on to Val was real or just a figment of her imagination. Val was a motivational speaker who was about to embark on a tour to spread her wisdom all across the world, especially Asia. But she faced some pushback from the Chinese organizers who wanted to see her birth certificate. While obtaining the keys to the locker from her estranged father, Sang, who had taken up monkhood, Val came across a painting of a demon from Vietnamese folklore called Sanshi or the hungry ghost. Coming to the core conflict, Val suffered from a chronic itch on her head, which was likely a result of the childhood trauma of watching her father drown her mother to death. But, as per her father, it was the hungry ghost’s poison that was coursing through her blood,...

'Control Freak' Review: Kelly Marie Tran Shines in Dull Horror
Image
An ambitious motivational speaker is tormented by an unrelenting itch in the back of her head in Hulu’s new horror film, Control Freak, but that itch seems destined to never be satisfied. And it’s a 50/50 split whether horror fans will be, either, in this Kelly Marie Tran-led outing written and directed by Shal Ngo (based on his Hulu short film Control). Tran, known for her work in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Raya and the Last Dragon, is perfectly cast, however. Tran creates a believable protagonist as a fast-rising motivational speaker named Valerie, who spirals down a psychological rabbit hole that leads to bloody terror.

The film is part of a collaboration between Hulu and WorthenBrooks, which has doled out a slew of successful horror movies, including The Mill,Appendage, and Carved. Here, Val battles a mysterious parasitic demon from her homeland — which she believes is inside her,...

Control Freak Review — Body Horror Made Boring
Image
Control Freak is streaming on Hulu on March 13.

In the last few years, horror has become the cultural zeitgeist in the world of cinema. Horror is relatively easy to produce and gathers much higher returns on investment than prestige drama used to. As the relative popularity of horror increases, specific subgenres are receiving far more attention than ever. Between The Substance making history through its Best Picture Oscar nomination and Dave Franco and Alison Brie’s raucous Sundance flick Together being the biggest sale of the 2025 festival, it’s clear that this freaky subgenre is part of the moment, at least for a while. Hulu is looking to enter this scene through Control Freak, an unsettling horror flick that’s a mess from start to finish.

Shal Ngo’s sophomore debut tells the story of a motivational speaker, Val (Star Wars’s Kelly Marie Tran), whose life...

‘Control Freak’ Hulu Review: Kelly Marie Tran Is Phenomenal In Overlong But Effective Horror Film
Image
I love all kinds of horror movies. I know that people scoff at shock horror or ones that are high on gore, but if done well, they can be fun too. That said, recently, I’ve been gravitating towards tales about the external manifestation of somebody’s innermost apprehensions or desires rather than stories about something external that’s supposed to induce fear internally. As in, I will appreciate a well-made creature feature where said creature goes on an absolute rampage. But there’ll always be a sense of detachment to it because, at the back of my mind, I always know no such thing can exist in real life. Now, if you have a haunting entity that can be perceived only by the protagonist, since it’s a representation of that individual’s unresolved trauma or guilt, then you have me scared even after the credits have rolled on the film.

Control Freak: Hulu’s next horror flick gets a creepy poster and trailer
Image
The latest Hulu Original horror flick, Control Freak, has gotten a poster or trailer, but be forewarned – if you suffer from arachnophobia you might not want to look at the poster I’ve included below. It’s a little gross! Control Freak, comes from director Shal Ngo, who expands his own horror short, Control, to feature length with this. The short was originally featured on Hulu’s Bite Sized Halloween. Ngo also recently directed The Park, which was like Lord of the Flies set in an amusement park, but this seems to be his biggest movie to date.

It stars Kelly Marie Tran (of Star Wars: The Last Jedi) as “a motivational speaker is tormented by an unrelenting itch on the back of her head.” The trailer actually reminds me a bit of a fun old schlocky horror movie from the seventies called The Manitou, where a woman was similarly infected by a parasite,...

Hulu has unveiled the official new trailer for Control Freak, an original horror movie starring Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi actor Kelly Marie Tran as a woman afflicted with a demonic parasite.

Control Freak debuts exclusively on Hulu on March 13.

The logline for this psychological thriller is straightforward, simple, and effective: “A motivational speaker is tormented by an unrelenting itch on the back of her head.”
