The texts were ringing like crazy this morning. “Are you in Maui? Are you okay?” Fortunately, yes, just fine. But Maui, the second-biggest Island in Hawaii, continues to fight massive wildfires that started Tuesday and virtually destroyed the classic town of Lahaina (capital of Hawaii at one time) and a tourist mecca.
Flames have reportedly destroyed hundreds of homes and some businesses in a paradise that has long been a favorite getaway — and even home for many entertainment luminaries, including Oprah Winfrey, Clint Eastwood, Steven Tyler, Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson, Kris Kristofferson and Jeff Bezos, among many more. Mick Fleetwood not only lives on the island, but has a popular restaurant, Fleetwood’s On Front Street, that was situated right in the path of where the fire was most fierce in picturesque Lahaina, a city described now as looking like a bombed-out war zone.

In Mike Myers’ new six-part Netflix series, “The Pentaverate,” the Canadian comedy legend plays eight new characters. Add them to a repertoire that includes such beloved weirdos as Wayne Campbell, Austin Powers, Dieter, Dr. Evil and Shrek, and the streamer seems eager to tout their partnership with the actor, pairing him with director David O. Russell for an hour-long mutual-appreciation session at the Netflix Is a Joke comedy festival.
Asked by Russell to describe the idea that inspired the new show, Myers — who showed up, despite having lost his voice to seasonal allergies — flashed back to his 1993 feature “So I Married an Axe Murderer,” in which he played both main character Charlie Mackenzie and his dad, a cuckoo conspiracy nut who ranted about a secret society of the five wealthiest people in the world who run everything.

Will Arnett and Mike Myers credit their Canadian roots for their love of the eccentric talent series “The Gong Show.” “In Canada, we didn’t have as many TV stations, and cable came slowly,” said Arnett, who executive produces the ABC revival, now in its second season. “I think Canadians appreciated the absurdity of it.”
Added Myers: “It’s outsider art, because we’re an outsider country. I loved ‘The Gong Show,” I thought it was hilarious. It felt like punk rock to me.”
Under his development deal at Sony Pictures TV, Arnett was looking at a list of franchises the studio owned and we ripe for a revival. When he came across “The Gong Show,” he thought Myers might have some fun with it. He just didn’t know what.
“It was like an open [offer], who knows what he would do,” Arnett said. “If you could get Mike to do it,...

The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise has helped launch many a film career in Hollywood, including Johnny Depp, Patricia Arquette, and Kelly Rowland, just to name a few. But none more notorious perhaps than the career of Tom Arnold. Halloween is almost here which means when we had the chance to speak with Tom Arnold about the new horror comedy Dead Ant, we couldn't resist the chance to get in a question about his relationship with MovieWeb's favorite horror movie killer Freddy Krueger.
The 58 year old actor and comedian, who earned an MTV Movie Award for Best Comedic Performance thanks to his supporting role in Arnold Schwarzenegger's True Lies, made his film debut in Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, the supposed finale of the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, which arrived in September 1991.

Well, it took ’til the very end, but the strangest story of the week has just arrived, and that’s in a week when it was revealed that Will Smith was on the Cannes jury, and that Fyre Festival thing. It’s a while since we’ve seen much of Mike Myers: the Canadian superstar comedian’s two main franchises, “Shrek” and “Austin Powers,” lie dormant, and Myers hasn’t actually appeared on screen since his cameo in Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” in 2009, although he did direct 2013’s documentary “Supermensch: The Legend Of Shep Gordon.”
But something of a comeback may be on the way: Myers has been talking about a possible fourth “Austin Powers” film this week to mark the film’s 20th anniversary; he’s starring with Margot Robbie and Simon Pegg in crime thriller “Terminal”; and today, Myers sort-of completes a return to the spotlight in the strangest,...

Thanks to streaming services such as Netflix, we’ve never had better access to documentaries. A whole new audience can discover that these real life stories are just as thrilling, entertaining, and incredible as the latest big-budget blockbuster. What’s more, they’re all true too. But with a new found glut of them comes the ever more impossible choice, what’s worth your time? Below is my pick of the 50 best modern feature length documentaries.
I’ve defined modern as being from 2000 onwards, which means some of the greatest documentaries ever made will not feature here. I’m looking at you Hoop Dreams.
50. McConkey (2013)
d. Rob Bruce, Scott Gaffney, Murray Wais, Steve Winter, David Zieff

After 35 years, it’s time for the Razzies to apologize. The annual occasion to dishonor the worst in movies has long been criticized for itself being one of the worst things to happen to cinema. They crap on easy targets more than they serve a good cause, and the majority of their nominees in recognition of awful filmmaking and performances in 2014 proves little exception. There’s another Transformers movie, another Adam Sandler movie, another movie starring someone from Twilight, and it’s mostly the same handful of titles represented in each category. Transformers: Age of Extinction tops with seven nominations and Saving Christmas and The Legend of Hercules got six, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles got five, A Million Ways to Die in the West got four and each with three are Left Behind, Sex Tape, The Expendables 3 and Blended. The apology, however, comes in the form of a new Golden Raspberry category for past Razzie nominees...

Now, Myers has entered into a new deal with HBO that should give him a creative forum to make more interesting projects. Deadline reports that the deal is an overall agreement between Myers and the cable network over the next two years. HBO president Michael Lombardo issued this statement about the deal....

With just hours remaining in 2014, I wanted to document for myself — and share with you — the films that I enjoyed the most this year. I have seen hundreds of titles — on the big screen and on screeners, at festivals and at multiplexes — among them all of the top Oscar contenders, up to and including every film on the documentary and foreign language film shortlists. In other words, I have done my best to be well-versed in what’s out there — but, needless to say, no list of this sort is anything but a subjective exercise for anyone.
It pains me that I do not have room to acknowledge, on the list itself, more of 2014’s extraordinary films (i.e. the 12-year project Boyhood, the acting showcases Birdman and The Imitation Game, the timely Selma and films both profound and moving, such as Citizenfour, Finding Vivian Maier and Leviathan,...

Finally "Boyhood" gets trumped, though just barely. Alejandro González Iñárritu's "Birdman" was the nominations hog with the Phoenix crowd with 10 mentions. But Richard Linklater's opus was just a few steps behind with eight. Also with eight nominations was "Gone Girl," which picked up refreshing recognition in the Best Supporting Actress arena for Carrie Coon. "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Into the Woods" and "The Theory of Everything" picked up seven nods apiece. Check out the full list of nominees below. Winners will be announced on Dec. 16. Though a few of Johnny Depp's most recent films -- The Lone Ranger, The Tourist, Transcendence, Dark Shadows -- have not exactly been critical and box office successes, the actor has gotten to a place in his career where the critics don't bother him.
In a new interview with Details magazine, Depp gets especially blunt about his questionable choice of films.
"As Marlon once so beautifully f*cking said to me, life is a birdsong. That's stuck with me," he says, quoting his mentor, the legendary actor Marlon Brando. "What is really satisfying is, like Marlon, getting to that place where he just didn't give a f*ck."

The crew behind the Hollywood Film Awards may be regretting the decision to televise the ceremony this year after Johnny Depp‘s bizarre speech. The actor stole headlines by awkwardly slurring and cursing his way through presenting the documentary award for Mike Myers’ Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon.
While everyone stopped to scratch their heads, you have to admit that this is all amazing. As the ridiculously talented and accomplished actor he is, it’s cool that Depp clearly gives zero fucks. Why should he?
Kudos to you if you make it through 2:34 of him wrangling the microphone, swaying, and having trouble reading the teleprompter. No one really knows if he was drunk, high, a combination, or none of the above. Regardless of being cut off on stage, it looks like Depp had a grand old time. High five to Johnny Depp.

No one watched the first live broadcast of the Hollywood Awards on CBS last night. So it's a good thing the event was recorded so that we could enjoy the slurring, stumbling speech Johnny Depp gave there. Depp was on hand to introduce the documentary Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon when he tottered to the microphone, commenting, "That's the weirdest microphone I ever saw in my life." (Depp, with disheveled, bleached hair and sunglasses, seems to again be channeling Captain Jack Sparrow.) "It's one of those nights," he remarks. Meanwhile, Shep Gordon and the rest of the audience looks on amused.

He then proceeded to say, "I'm not very good at this kind of thing" as he scratched his head and cursed expletives that got censored. Viewers reacted on Twitter by comparing him to his character from Pirates of the Caribbean, Jack Sparrow.

"There’s never been anyone better and there likely never will be," Downey said of Duvall, who was equally effusive about his co-star.
"The reason I took the project mainly is because of Robert Downey Jr," Duvall praised. "We spent many good times together."

Duvall also thanked his wife Luciana Pedraza, laughing, "I’ve had a few better halves, but she’s the best better half I’ve ever had."

It should have been bad. It should have been terrible. A live broadcast of the Hollywood Film Awards with Queen "People's Choice" Latifah as host? A network spotlight on the most fake awards show of them all? Even with low expectations, how could talent go on stage and pick up these, cough, "awards" in front of a national audience? An award given to them because they were available to show up and their studios lobbied for it? (At least fans vote for some of the Teen Choice Awards!) Well, watch out Critics Choice Awards because CBS and Dick Clark Productions figured out a way to fashion a much more entertaining two hours than you've delivered the past few years. Ok. Maybe they got lucky. Maybe. Live events thrive off the unexpected and the 2014 Hollywood Film Awards had a ton of it. Major flubs, some seriously intoxicated presenters and a number...

Um, Johnny Depp, what's happening? As the 2014 Hollywood Film Awards started coming to a close tonight, viewers and the star-studded audience were greeted with an especially odd encounter. Depp took the stage to give a warm intro for Shep Gordon whose documentary Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon was being honored, but Johnny ended up stealing the show. Depp wobbled up to the microphone and exclaimed how weird it looked, then made it very evident that he couldn't stand up straight. After confessing that he's no good at this sort of thing, he states "Okay, I'm going to read this thing." But he continuously slurred words and appeared to go off whatever was on the teleprompter....

★★★☆☆Last year, Mike Myers directed Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon. It was the sugary chronicling of the celebrity world's most treasured manager. Played out like a pseudo Carry On, the movie rascally skips from one puckish anecdote to the next. Gordon was a star overseer, happily living his lives through others; infectiously adored by others and impenetrably charismatic. It was a career worth fabling. One year later and director Gracie Otto explores similar grounds with her debut feature-length, The Last Impresario (2013). Akin to the theatrical pizzazz of stardom, Otto encountered her subject, Glaswegian stage and screen producer Michael White, at Cannes in 2010.

The 17th annual Savannah Film Festival kicks off on Saturday and runs through Nov. 1 — and, starting this year, its organizers want you to think of it as a major player in the awards season, generally, and specifically the fest for best documentary feature Oscar contenders, much like people associate the Palm Springs International Film Festival with best foreign language film Oscar contenders.
To that end, the fest is introducing a “Docs to Watch” sidebar, as part of which it will screen nine top docs: Pulitzer Prize winner Jose Antonio Vargas‘ Documented (CNN Films), John Maloof and Charlie Siskel‘s Finding Vivian Mayer (Sundance Selects), Alan Hicks‘ Keep on Keepin’ On (RADiUS-twc), Oscar nominee Steve James‘ Life Itself (Magnolia), James Keach‘s Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me (Area 23a), Oscar nominee Robert Kenner‘s Merchants of Doubt (Sony Classics), Gabe Polsky‘s Red Army...

It’s white-knuckle time for the Napa Valley Film Festival’s organizers, filmmakers and fans, with a key venue and two hotels still fixing earthquake damage ahead of the Nov. 12 opening night. The post-quake craziness comes just as the four-year-old event is getting traction in Hollywood for its Oscar Season-adjacent timing, with companies setting encore screenings and star appearances, to tout awards contenders from earlier in the year.
The festival bills itself a mix of film, food and, of course, wine, with its own wine director pouring bottles from 150 of the region’s best-regarded vineyards. A recent Los Angeles event spotlighting the festival featured The Weinstein Co. President David Glasser, who said his company will use it to push awareness of several TWC awards contenders. Among those projects: The Imitation Game, with festival appearances scheduled for director Morten Tyldum and cast members for the biopic about martyred cryptography pioneer Alan Turing.

Edge of Tomorrow One of the year's blockbusters that I would say is worthy of considering buying though be on the lookout for a movie titled Live. Die. Repeat. as that is the new branding this Tom Cruise sci-fi actioner is going by on DVD and Blu-ray shelves. Otherwise, not only do I consider this to be one of the best blockbusters of the year, I'd say it's one of the best movies of 2014 as well. Top tenc Eh, not so sure, but definitely worth your time.
Million Dollar Arm Rental time... at best. This isn't a very good movie and I'm not sure how it has a "fresh" RottenTomatoes score, but I guess if you lower your expectations far enough you'll be satisfied.
A Million Ways to Die in the West I'm not sure expectations can be lowered far enough for this one, however. Seth MacFarlane's follow-up to...

For some actors, it is a natural progression to move from using their talents in front of the camera to testing their skills behind it. Though actors have been making the transition for years, 2013 was a particular popular year for actors-turned-directors. Who wouldn’t want to go to Italy in the summer for good food and entertaining conversation with a clever traveling companion? Quite a few people did just that, at least vicariously, via IFC Films‘ The Trip To Italy. The light-hearted sequel to The Trip easily had the weekend’s highest bow among specialty films, grossing $71,577 and averaging a tasty $23,859 in three theaters.
“The Trip to Italy opened with one of the highest per-screen (average)s of the summer, playing to sold-out shows this weekend in New York and Los Angeles,” IFC said in a statement. “The Michael Winterbottom-directed sequel has received wonderful reviews and strong word of mouth.” As with The Trip, which also starred Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon on a food and talk travelogue across U.K. countryside, the road ahead looks wide open for the Italian Trip. ★★★★☆In his 2002 documentary The Kid Stays in the Picture, Robert Evans proclaimed there are three sides to every story: "My side, your side and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each differently." In Mike Myers' directorial debut (which he co-directs with Beth Aala), Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon (2013), the titular Hollywood man about town gets his day in the limelight. Standing over six feet in his stocking feet and looking and sounding not dissimilar to Larry David, Shep Gordon is an entertainment legend. A colossus within the fields of talent management, film producing and cooking he has excelled in a field where being the nice guy normally means finishing last.

Essentially, at its core, cinema is just storytelling. Which is exactly the reason why Mike Myers’ directorial debut – alongside Beth Aala, in what is her sophomore endeavour – is such a treat. As Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon explores the life of a man who has dined, wined and revelled in the company of some of the most important cultural figures of the 20th century, and believe me, this man has some stories to tell.
Shep Gordon is one of the most famous people you’ve never heard of, and a contact list full of people you have. Two years ago, legendary manager Shep Gordon was lying in the hospital, recovering from gastrointestinal surgery, when Mike Myers approached him with an idea he'd been obsessing over: a documentary about Gordon's life. Gordon – a Zelig-like figure who'd befriended everyone from Michael Douglas to the Dalai Lama and was best known as Alice Cooper's manager – reluctantly agreed. "I was heavily medicated and must have been feeling sorry for myself," says Gordon.

Chicago – Not much is really revealed about the subject of the documentary “Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon,” co-directed by comedian Mike Myers. Shep is a rock star agent, Shep gets rich, Shep shares his Hawaiian beach condo with big stars, Shep represents gourmet chefs, Shep likes to cook and Shep strangely wants kids, despite being in his sixties and not being able to maintain any domestic relationship. There is no there in this film, only the spoils of good representation.
