A key difference between Doctor Who and its upcoming spinoff, The War Between the Land and the Sea, has been revealed ahead of its debut. The War Between the Land and the Sea's story focuses on Unit trying to prevent a global war when the Sea Devils reveal themselves to the world. The six-episode miniseries is expected in 2026.
Speaking with Collider, The War Between the Land and the Sea star Russell Tovey explained how the Sea Devils' arrival makes the show different from Doctor Who. Comparing the series to Independence Day, the actor unpacked how the story's approach contrasts with the Doctor typically visiting alien races in the main show.

After months of uncertainty, the good news can't stop coming for Doctor Who fans. Following the shock exit of Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor at the end of May, the long-awaited trailer for the aforementioned spin-off debuted, although it frustratingly gave no release date, possibly due to the ongoing behind-the-scenes chaos.

Whilst the future of Doctor Who remains somewhat uncertain — although there has been some confirmation that, with or without Disney, the series plans to continue — many fans are looking back into the time vortex in the hope that their favorite former stars might make a return. With previous companions Matt Lucas and John Bishop both declaring their interest in reviving their characters of Nardole and Dan, respectively, another name has thrown their hat into the ring for a potential return, but with a big catch.

Doctor Who has gone through several different castings since its relaunch in 2005, and now one of the show's producers who helped bring the series back to television has spoken out about how things have changed in recent years, specifically with the casting of Jodie Whittaker and Ncuti Gatwa.
Speaking with King's College London's InTouch, award-winning TV producer Jane Tranter discussed her career, which includes Doctor Who and Succession. She specifically talked about the groundbreaking sci-fi series' ability to handle sensitive subject matter, along with her thoughts about recent years introducing more diverse casting to its lead role, which was historically played by white, male actors.

The latest seasons of Doctor Who featured some backlash and criticism, as viewers accused the show of going woke. Seasons 14 and 15 cast Ncuti Gatwa, making him the first person of color to play the iconic sci-fi character. And while not everyone was happy with the casting choice, former producer Jane Tranter spoke up about these comments, arguing that it's normal.
In a recent interview, Tranter argued that what makes Doctor Who entertaining is how it's able to talk about sensitive issues, plus it's just how showrunner Russell T Davies writes. She also argued that Doctor Who's casting decisions, whether it be Gatwa or Jodie Whittaker, should be seen as...

Doctor Who’s future has been the subject of a lot of speculation lately, but the BBC insists the sci-fi series isn’t going anywhere, even if Disney steps away.
Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Kate Phillips, chief content officer at the BBC, confirmed that the show will continue regardless of its American partner’s decision. “Any Whovians out there, rest assured – Doctor Who is going nowhere,” she said.
“Disney has been a great partnership and it continues with The War Between The Land And The Sea next year but, going forward, with or without Disney, Doctor Who will still be on the BBC. The Tardis is going nowhere.

When the BBC announced a partnership with Disney+, the intention was to bring Doctor Who to a larger global audience than ever before. In exchange for the show's streaming rights, the House of Mouse gave the long-running sci-fi series a cash injection, leading to a much-needed big-budget overhaul.
Unfortunately, even with better effects and bigger-name guest stars like Frozen's Jonathan Groff, Doctor Who hasn't proven to be a ratings hit either on television ot streaming. The future of Doctor Who — at least part of it — remains up in the air. From the 60th anniversary specials in 2023 and on, including the upcoming spinoff The War Between the Land and the Sea, the series has been a co-production of the BBC and Disney+. But should that continue to be the case, there would have to be a renewal of the deal, and there’s no word yet on whether that will happen. But based on what Kate Phillips, the BBC’s new chief content officer, has now said at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Doctor Who fans don’t have to necessarily worry that the show is done.

The Time Lord will not be teleporting away from the BBC anytime soon.
That’s the message from Kate Phillips, the BBC’s new chief content officer, who said the British national broadcaster is committed to Doctor Who — with or without Disney.
Speculation has been swirling around the sci-fi series for months amid plunging ratings and concerns that Disney+ could pull out of its co-production deal with the BBC.
Showrunner Russell T Davies said in June that “we don’t know what’s happening yet” regarding Doctor Who’s future. One thing is certain: Ncuti Gatwa has confirmed his exit as the Doctor.
Season 15 ended on an ambiguous note, as Gatwa regenerated into Billie Piper’s Rose Tyler. Produced by Bad Wolf, spin-off series The War Between The Land And The Sea is up next.

Few franchises have made quite the impact on the sci-fi genre as Star Trek and Doctor Who. Both began in the 1960s and reshaped television storytelling forever. While one chronicles Starfleet's voyages among the stars, the other follows a Time Lord's ever-changing face through time.
In a historic first, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 quietly delivered an Easter egg that bridges these two pillars of genre storytelling. Doctor Who fans have had a tough time of it as of late. Ncuti Gatwa's second season didn't get high ratings, and now Disney+ has pulled out of their streaming deal with the BBC.
The show has been left in limbo, without even a Doctor at the helm. Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor regenerated into Billie Piper, the actress who played Rose Tyler in the earlier Russell T Davies-helmed episodes. However, she wasn't credited as "the Doctor" and may indeed be something entirely different. What's going on? Is the show dead in the water? Unfortunately, Davies had only negative answers when he appeared on Empire Magazine's Pilot TV podcast, which was released on Aug. 11, 2025.

It has now been nearly two months since the jaw-dropping finale of Doctor Who Season 2, with Ncuti Gatwa calling time on his tenure as the titular Time Lord, with the world left stunned as the former Sex Education actor regenerated into Billie Piper. The ending didn't just leave fans on a knife's edge, it also seemingly concluded the entire series, with it still not known what the future of Doctor Who looks like. Despite the return of formerly successful showrunner Russell T. Davies, dropping ratings and wide-reaching fandom backlash have left many disappointed with the Disney era.
Among these many disappointments have come the swirling rumors surrounding the show's future, as well as speculation as to how such a messy ending could've been allowed. With numerous plot lines unresolved and a strong suggestion that Gatwa's regeneration was filmed as late as February in a re-shoot, Doctor Who fans simply want answers.

Doctor Who's future is very much up in the air, with neither the BBC nor Disney+ willing to confirm whether reports that their partnership has ended are correct.
We'd imagine an official split will happen after The War Between the Land and the Sea's release, as the spin-off marks what's likely to be the last collaboration between the British broadcaster and global streaming platform. Big changes are obviously on the horizon, and rumours continue to swirl that the BBC is in talks with multiple potential new streaming partners.
Whatever happens, we will eventually get a new Doctor. Ncuti Gatwa departed the series after only two seasons and a couple of Christmas specials, though we've heard rumblings he would have stuck around for a third batch of episodes had the Time Lord's fate not been left in limbo.

The world loves a sports drama, and now one of the most controversial former Time Lords on Doctor Who is set to star in one. Jodie Whittaker, best known for playing the Thirteenth Doctor in the sci-fi series, is one of the more contentious leads in the show's modern history, thanks in no small part to a poor behind-the-scenes production helmed by Chris Chibnall. In fact, apart from Doctor Who, Whittaker's reputation as a top actress is impeccable, having dazzled in the likes of Toxic Town and Broadchurch.
Now, she is set to join the ensemble of the BBC's Dear England, an upcoming adaptation of the hugely successful stage production that dramatizes the journey of the England national men's football team under the tutelage of manager Gareth Southgate. Whittaker is confirmed via Radio Times to be starring as team psychologist Pippa Grange, alongside a cast already bursting at the seams with talent.

Russell T Davies resurrected Doctor Who in 2005, and following a hugely successful stint as showrunner, he passed the reins to Steven Moffat. That proved to be another win for the long-running sci-fi property, whereas Chris Chibnall's run led to a significant decline in interest.
Ratings plummeted, and the BBC eventually asked Davies to step back into the Tardis for a new era of storytelling, starting with the 60th anniversary specials. Unfortunately, his ideas for the show proved divisive, and Ncuti Gatwa's two-season run was a ratings disappointment.
Disney+ is expected to end its funding/streaming deal with the British broadcaster after The War Between the Land and the Sea is released later this year.
The season 15/season 2 finale ended with Gatwa's Doctor regenerating into Billie Piper, a major cliffhanger that may be left unresolved for the foreseeable future if this latest update is anything to go by.
As we first reported on SFFGazette.

Back when the BBC struck a deal with Disney to bring Doctor Who to Disney+, allowing the show to be made with American money, it was very exciting. The rebooted series even brought back showrunner Russell T Davies, who ushered in the 'New Who' era back in the 2000s.
Ncuti Gatwa's run as the Fifteenth Doctor was largely hit and miss. By the end of his second season, he regenerated into our new Sixteenth Doctor, played by none other than Billie Piper, who previously played the Doctor's companion Rose Tyler. It does sometimes feel like the show is constantly setting up the next event. Or as former star Peter Davison (who played the Fifth Doctor from 1982-84) says, it's like watching a big trailer.
"It’s like watching a trailer for a Doctor Who show you’d like to watch later," Davison said during an appearance on The Lewis Nicholls Show.

It has now been several weeks since the chaotic and unsatisfying finale of Doctor Who Season 2, and fans are still no closer to learning the fate of their beloved timey-wimey show. Following what seems to be the culmination of the lackluster Disney era of the series, despite no confirmation of Disney's departure being announced, Russell T. Davies' second era at the helm quite possibly couldn't have gone much worse.

Well, in the latest suggestion of the show's future, one of its more recent stars is offering a defiant stand against cancellation rumors. One of the biggest surprises in Doctor Who history took the internet by storm. This resulted in backlash from fans who had not seen the Doctor Who episode yet.
BBC have released a statement regarding fans' frustations. "Ncuti Gatwa’s departure from the series had been widely speculated and many fans will have been aware that this was a possibility," they said. For the bombastic finale to season 15 ofDoctor Who, showrunner Russell T Davies pulled out all the stops. He brought back not one classic series villain, but two. First was the Rani, and second was Omega. But Omega wasn't quite what fans were expecting.
Instead of the layered character presented in the classic series, this Omega was a giant skeleton who roared incoherently. Many people who enjoyed the original version weren't happy, but now Davies has spoken out in the pages of Doctor WhoMagazine about why he made the change.
“You don’t need a man in a big cloak when you’ve got Archie Panjabi and Anita Dobson being their own Time Lords! A third one was just going to make it slightly mad," he said, via Doctor Who TV. “These things do grow in legend. They become the legend. That is the point of the Wish World, and the point of the Underverse actually.

Russell T Davies brought Doctor Who back from the dead in 2005, and following a hugely successful stint as showrunner, he passed the reins to Steven Moffat. That was another win for the long-running sci-fi property, but Chris Chibnall's time in charge was not.
Doctor Who steadily lost viewers during that period, and when it came time to start over, the BBC turned back to Davies. Unfortunately, his ideas for the show have proven to be divisive, and Ncuti Gatwa's two-season run was a ratings let-down (Disney+ is expected to end its funding/streaming deal with the British broadcaster imminently).
The season 15/season 2 finale ended with Gatwa's Doctor regenerating into Billie Piper. However, there's reason to believe she isn't the next Time Lord and is likely just a stand-in until the character's real new face is revealed.

After Doctor Whoseason 15’s major cliffhanger ending, the showrunner has commented on the series' future and the unsolved mysteries. Before Doctor Who season 15 even ended, a rumor spread about Ncuti Gatwa regenerating and Doctor Who getting canceled. Because the first half of that came true, fans are nervously waiting to find out if the second half will happen too. Unfortunately, showrunner Russell T. Davies (Rtd) and the rest of the Doctor Who team are also stuck without answers.
In an interview with Doctor Who Magazine (via RadioTimes), Rtd balked at the idea of Doctor Who ever ending, and he discussed all the mysteries that he hopes to explore in the future. Take your fish sticks out of the fryer and whip up a bowl of custard because the Whoniverse is expanding as the BBC announces another Doctor Who spin-off! Amidst speculation about Doctor Who’s cancellation after the latest season of the timeless BBC TV series underperformed, the BBC says it’s moving forward with a preschool-style animated Doctor Who series. There’s even more changes in store coming to the “Doctor Who” universe — or Whoniverse, rather — this time in the form of an animated preschool series.
The CBeebies show “will see the Doctor traveling through time and space for the pre-school audience, solving mysteries and problems alongside their companions and other friends,” according to the BBC’s Thursday announcement.
Things are in the very early stages, however, as the networks are still looking for a production company to both create and produce the cartoon. Meanwhile, the BBC and Disney+ are already working together on the previously announced spinoff “The War Between the Land and the Sea,” starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Russell Tovey.

The closing minutes of Doctor Who's latest season finale, “The Reality War,” stunned viewers as Ncuti Gatwa bowed out as the Fifteenth Doctor in a glow of regeneration energy that resulted in former companion Billie Piper seemingly stepping into the role completely unannounced. Ncuti Gatwa's departure from Doctor Who shocked many fans; the Barbie star only took centre stage in two Christmas specials and a total of sixteen instalments following his introduction in the closing moments of the final 60th anniversary episode.
