Aaron Kaufman, Director of the Ukraine War Documentary ‘Superpower,’ Dies at 51
Image
Aaron Kaufman, who directed the documentary Superpower about the war in Ukraine alongside Sean Penn and was a longtime producing partner of Robert Rodriguez, has died. He was 51.

Kaufman died Thursday in Las Vegas, Verdi Productions President Chad Verdi told The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday. Reports indicated that Kaufman died of an apparent heart attack.

“It’s a very sad time for everyone who loved Aaron,” Verdi wrote in an email to THR. “Aaron passed away Thursday night. He and I spoke by phone about 20 minutes prior to 911 being called. He was in great spirits and was headed to dinner. Life is short and family and friends are everything. I miss him a lot already.”

Kaufman may be best known for the Emmy-nominated documentary, but he also wrote, directed and produced several films, including Machete, Machete Kills, Urge and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. He also executive produced The Greatest,...

Ray Liotta's Final Movie Debuts With 93% Audience Score On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
1992, Ray Liotta's last movie, has arrived, and it will end his career with praise. The actor was known for his performances in Field of Dreams, Hannibal, Goodfellas, and more. He died suddenly and unexpectedly in his sleep at 67 years old in 2022. He was working on the production for Dangerous Waters and never lived to see it finished. He has had several movies released after his death, including an edited version of Cocaine Bear. His final movie tells the stories of two small families living through the 1992 LA riots.

With 1992 finally in theaters, audiences had the opportunity to see Liotta's final performance, and the response has been nothing but praise. With a 94% score on the Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter, it has earned a Hot designation, represented by a full and upright bucket of popcorn. The critics were less favorable, though still offered a 67% Tomatometer score. Both scores are positive, but the 27% difference is stark.

Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me by Mariko Tamaki and Rosemary Valero-o’Connell
Image
What’s the opposite of a romance? Is there a word to describe a story about realizing you’re not in love, and that you need to get out of a relationship?

We could call it “anti-romance,” but that misses the point. It would be a useful word. Maybe someone will comment to let me know it already exists.

Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me is that kind of book: it’s a graphic novel, in that nameless opposite-of-romance genre. Francesca “Freddy” Riley is in high school in Berkeley, and is in a relationship with her school’s most magnetic and compelling figure, the titular Laura Dean.

Laura is a jerk, in the way that massively popular and attractive teenagers often are: no matter what she does or how she acts, everyone accepts it, even loves it. So, as we see her, she’s practically amoral, a monster of...

Watch The Bachelor's Peter Weber Hilariously Break Up With Total Strangers
Chris D'Elia, Hilary Duff, Bryan Greenberg, Brett Gelman, Jamie Chung, Hannah Simone, Eric André, and Skylar Astin in Flock of Dudes (2016)
"Breaking up is hard to do," as the old song goes. So, Jimmy Kimmel decided to help Peter Weber get a little practice. The late-night host sent The Bachelor star to The Grove in Los Angeles and had him "break up" with complete strangers on the escalators. The whole thing went down on Monday's episode of Jimmy Kimmy Live!. Sometimes, Weber offered a lengthy explanation for the split. "I just feel like we've shared so much in these last three seconds," he told one shopper. "It's been, like, an amazing journey for me. So, I want you to know that, but I think I have to let you go now." Other times, he just boiled it down to a one-liner. "I...

Hilary Duff in The Haunting of Sharon Tate (2019)
New Haunting of Sharon Tate Trailer Has Hilary Duff Terrorized by the Manson Family
Hilary Duff in The Haunting of Sharon Tate (2019)
Late last year, the first teaser for The Haunting of Sharon Tate arrived, and it showed scenes from the new thriller, coming across as midnight schlock of the lowest kind. Now, we have the official trailer, which has cleaned itself up nicely, presenting the movie as a true horror tale that's worthy of cinema screens. It's more finished up and polished, and it downplays one of the more controversial aspects of the film itself.

Hilary Duff stars as Sharon Tate in what is described as a twisted retelling of facts. It's not supposed to be a true crime drama. This is a supernatural thriller that reimagines terrifying real-life events. Some are not happy about that, especially Sharon Tate's sister, who has railed against the movie and how it subverts facts and presents falsities. The official synopsis has arrived with the latest look at footage.

Hilary Duff: 'I Feel Like I Was Judged for Having a Baby Too Soon'
Hilary Duff
Hilary Duff is no stranger to judgment when it comes to her personal life.

On Thursday's episode of The Talk, the 29-year-old actress admitted to feeling judged for "having a baby too soon."

"I feel like I was judged for having a baby too soon and getting married too soon," Duff said, adding that the entertainment industry has "pigeonholed" her for being a mom.

"We are the most in demand, the most desirable and the most judged," she continued, noting that women are "the hardest on one another."

"Nobody cares about men's personal lives as much as women," Duff added.

Kumail Nanjiani is the Nikki Minaj of movies
Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes, and clips and puts it all in perspective. Let me tell you something, one of my jobs here at Hitfix is (was) to watch trailers. I've seen a bunch of comedy trailers the last couple of months. They all have Kumail Nanjiani in them. I'm serious. All of them. Fist Fight. Brother Nature. The Late Bloomer. Flock of Dudes. The Dude-Bro Crusade. I made up that last one.  I love Kumail. He's the master of deadpan as Dinesh in the great Silicon Valley HBO series and all around funny person. He kills it in just about everything he's in. He's often on the podcast Harmontown (featuring Community auteur Dan Harmon), he's got an active Twitter account, he's in that Nerdist scene with Chris Hardwick. It's time just to give him his own movie. He's like Nikki Minaj.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children Wins the Box Office with $28.5M
Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, Ella Purnell, Pixie Davies, Lauren McCrostie, Cameron James-King, Thomas Odwell, and Joseph Odwell in Miss Peregrine et les Enfants particuliers (2016)
September signifies the end of the summer movie season, which typically brings an end to huge box office grosses. Sony's western remake The Magnificent Seven won easily last weekend, but it couldn't repeat for a second weekend in a row, thanks to 20th Century Fox's Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. The fantasy adaptation earned a respectable $28.5 million in its opening weekend.

Box Office Mojo reports that Miss Peregrine earned a solid $8,092 per-screen average from 3,522 theaters. The film, based on Ransom Riggs' novel, was produced with a $110 million budget, so it still has some work to do in order to earn a profit. Debuting in second place is Deepwater Horizon, which earned $20.6 million from 3,259 theaters for a decent $6,321 per-screen average. Last weekend's winner, The Magnificent Seven, the Western remake starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, dropped to third place this weekend with $15.7 million, with the top 5 rounded out...

Flock Of Dudes Review
Flock Of Dudes is a star-studded bromance dissection about becoming one with maturity, yet Bob Castrone’s film lacks the same motivations that its characters lazily ignore. A who’s who of almost A-list comedians float through a vague, generic period of rediscovery without ever making good on their thematic promises. Comedics flounder, drama dissipates and relationships aimlessly shamble on for far too long, until Castrone’s reformed herd of drunken steers shuffles towards an expected finality. Scot Armstrong’s Search Party went the bromigo route earlier this year, and while Castrone’s film is admittedly more stable, at lest Armstrong swung for the fences. Only Eric André delivers as expected here, while a host of other extremely funny comedians play drab, unfunny versions of themselves – because this is a serious movie, dammit!

Stand-up veteran Chris D’Elia stars as Adam, a party-loving bachelor who lives with his three best friends (Eric André,...

The Weekend Warrior 9/30/2016: Deepwater Horizon, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Masterminds
Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.

This Past Weekend:

While the new movies reigned at the box office this past weekend, both Antoine Fuqua’s The Magnificent Seven (Sony) and the animated Storks (Warner Bros.) didn’t fare nearly as well as our projections, both falling short by about $10 million. The Magnificent Seven, starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, fared decently with $34.7million, which is about the average for Washington’s films, but the fourth highest opening for a Western after last year’s The Revenant, the animated Rango, and Cowboys and Aliens. Storks’ $21.3 million opening wasn’t great compared to other animated September releases with Sony still holding the September opening record with Hotel Transylvania 2, but it should continue to do well with no other animated movies opening for another month.

Can Miss Peregrine Beat Magnificent Seven at the Box Office?
Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, Ella Purnell, Pixie Davies, Lauren McCrostie, Cameron James-King, Thomas Odwell, and Joseph Odwell in Miss Peregrine et les Enfants particuliers (2016)
September has proven to be quite the difficult month for box office predictions, with three newcomers under-performing two weeks ago, and last weekend's winner The Magnificent Seven over-performing to win with $34.7 million. This weekend, three newcomers arrive to close out the month, 20th Century Fox's Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Lionsgate's Deepwater Horizon and Relativity's Masterminds. Only one can take home the box office crown, and we're predicting that movie will be Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

Box Office Mojo reports that Miss Peregrine will debut in roughly 3,400 theaters this weekend, with Deepwater Horizon opening in an estimated 3,000 theaters while Masterminds is set to open in roughly 2,800 theaters. While there is no Rotten Tomatoes score for Masterminds, both Miss Peregrine (62% Fresh) and Deepwater Horizon (89% Fresh) are faring quite well with the critics thus far. We're predicting that Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children will come out on top this weekend with $32.4 million.

Magnificent Seven Remake Wins Weekend Box Office with $35M
Jennifer Aniston, Kelsey Grammer, Ty Burrell, Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Andy Samberg, Katie Crown, Stephen Kramer Glickman, and Anton Starkman in Cigognes et compagnie (2016)
Earlier this week, we predicted that it would be a close race between the two new box office newcomer this weekend, Sony's The Magnificent Seven and Warner Bros.' Storks, but that didn't exactly happen. The Magnificent Seven easily took the box office crown this weekend with an estimated $35 million, with Storks debuting in second place with $21.8 million. Both new releases were critical hits as well, before performing well at the box office.

Box Office Mojo reports that The Magnificent Seven, the Western remake starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, pulled in an impressive $9,526 per-screen average from 3,674 theaters, along with a solid 63% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The remake was produced with a $90 million budget, but no international box office data has been released quite yet. Still this is a solid opening, which also represents a career best opening weekend for director Antoine Fuqua. This film also marks the third...

Will Magnificent Seven Be the Blockbuster the Box Office Needs?
Jennifer Aniston, Kelsey Grammer, Ty Burrell, Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Andy Samberg, Katie Crown, Stephen Kramer Glickman, and Anton Starkman in Cigognes et compagnie (2016)
After taking down three under-performing newcomers for its second straight win, Warner Bros.' Sully tries to make it three straight box office wins in a row this weekend. The true story drama will only face two newcomers, Sony Pictures' The Magnificent Seven remake and Warner Bros.' animated comedy Storks, both of which should easily unseat Sully. While we think it will be close, The Magnificent Seven should come out on top with $24.7 million.

Box Office Mojo reports that The Magnificent Seven, director Antoine Fuqua's Western remake starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, will debut in roughly 3,600 theaters, while Storks will open in 3,800 theaters. The Magnificent Seven currently holds a 61% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, although not enough reviews are in for Storks quite yet. We're predicting that Storks will debut in second place with $23.6 million, but it's certainly possible that these two newcomers flip-flop in the top two spots this weekend.

There's some funny jokes, just hope there's more to it than bros being bros. Chris D’Elia, Bob Castrone & Hannah Simone Talk Flock Of Dudes and Dead Grandmas
There was a point four or five years ago where it seemed like every studio comedy released was some variation of the guys-being-guys trademarked formula. You know – dudes knocking down beers, talking about chicks, engaging in various gross out antics, ribbing one another… Judd Apatow ushered in this bromance with The 40-Year Old Virgin and Todd Phillips took the blueprints to its nihilistic breaking point with his Hangover series. These were the biggest comedies around… until suddenly they weren’t. Look no further than the not-so-spectacular box-office results of Entourage and Hot Tub Time Machine 2 as proof. There’s something almost quaint nowadays about the genre. Watching out-of-shape grown men playing x-box, smoking a doob, picking their noses, lying about not doing anything, cursing one another off, scratching their balls – it’s all become dare-i-say… humdrum. I guess part of the initial appeal is the shock value, that ‘oh...
