One horrible actress can ruin a movie

I am not even finished watching the movie and had to write a review (which is not common at all for me). I wasn't expecting a great movie so am fine with the predictable plot and not great fight scenes. I love to watch Hallmark movies so am good with predictability! The one reason I may not finish watching it is because of the horrible acting by Marie Avgeropoulos. I can't imagine that anyone could do a worse job than her. Well maybe the other lady agent... Maria A. Completely ruins the movie. So, know that it is a fine movie - nothing special but okay except you will want to rip your eyes out when she is on screen!

Another OK rehash of a thousand forgotten flicks.

Right before seeing this I watched another 2024 action movie: 60 Minutes. There was practically no plotting on that one, but for a realistic feel and some decent action I gave it a 5 on another website. I was a bit surprised by the negative reviews of this movie here on Imdb, so I'm gonna write one that's not so upfront and insulting, you know, one that's more informative.

OK, so I'll point out that I thought the protagonist's essential super hearing was a bit creative. Other than that, I'm not really seeing anything here that hasn't been done before. Even though the writer certainly tried to bring some depth to all the characters (and thankfully the plot relies on this), the actual plot progression has been done many times before. Lather, rinse, repeat. Even the relationships between characters could be seen in the next Spy Kids movie.

We've gotten quite a few action movies that follow a basic formula this year, but this movie is more of a knockoff of many other knockoffs than others. Having said that, the filmmaking itself is never really terrible or even "bad" for that matter, but the acting quality varies and the plot can often be guessed.

A documentary about corn would be less corny!

Aside from this being nothing new or original, it's a poorly written and directed effort with corny dialogue and laughable action scenes.

In the early stages, we are meant to believe that a criminal of some importance has a security team made entirely of imbeciles that can't fight. They're so bad in fact, that a single man who moves slowly can defeat them all. Perhaps part of the reason for this is that, when one of the bodyguards is fighting with the hero, all the others become paralysed and only regain the ability to move when it's their turn to throw a punch 3 yards from his head. Throw in the odd embarrassingly bad commando roll that wouldn't look out of place in a 4 year olds gymnastics class and there you have it.

But that isn't all this cinematic masterpiece has to offer. No, it also has highly trained operators armed with assault rifles that couldn't hit a barn from 5 yards away. If those are the people that are meant to keep us safe, then we are doomed as a child with a catapult would make a more effective fighting force.

Finally, we come to the twist and the last bit of dialogue, which is delivered with all the emotional intensity of someone reading their gas bill out loud.

Consider this my favour to you - I have watched it so that you don't have to.

Basically Poop

I think a few days ago this piece of stink was rated around 8 stars. What nonsense, this is barely a movie. I don't think there was a script. I think everyone kind of figured it out as the shooting of the film progressed. It's so badly made. I'll make a point to look this director up so I can avoid wasting more time in the future. Dude has a future with Asylum doing Transmorpher sequels. The lead actor can't act, even when he doesn't have to say anything. He can't act hurt, injured, upset, sane, or anything. From his face, you'd think he had no clue he was in a movie until after the premier. It's bad guys. Watch something else. This is almost a Neil Breen movie. I guess if I watched it with friends, it would be one of those so bad it's good movie. Critical redundancy :'(

Paint-by-numbers writing, directing and costume design?

I think this might be the first time I could be bothered to write a review but...did it pass the time and I kind of followed what was happening? Yes. Was it enjoyable? No. This is what I imagine AI would spit out, direct and costume design (the set design and even cinematography were not bad tbf). There was nothing original in this film plot, but it wasn't satire or parody or even ironic, and it was INCREDIBLY moronic (at one point a computer virus in a flash drive goes up....in flames....). It was awful, but not so disruptively bad for the evening which I gave away to other tasks that I turned it off (there are your 2 stars), but somehow annoying and predictable enough to also be distracting -- and to make me write this review. Don't watch it. It's not bewildering, it's just bad.

Normally I don't write reviews but...

"The Painter's" resembles a TV show canceled after its pilot, as it struggles with a weak plot and underdeveloped characters. Just as such shows may struggle to resonate with viewers, the film leans heavily on the prowess of its three main actors (father, daughter, grandfather) to compensate for narrative shortcomings. Unfortunately, even their stellar performances can't fully redeem the lack of substance in the storyline. The film, like an unsuccessful pilot, leaves audiences yearning for a more engaging and well-rounded cinematic experience."

Verdict: "The Painter's" falls short, earning a less-than-enthusiastic assessment. Its weak storyline and underdeveloped characters make it less appealing than even a depressing wall staring competition, leaving viewers with a lackluster cinematic experience.

What a lame movie

Jon Voigt plays the predictable guy you love to hate. Voigt was the reason I wanted to watch this movie but sadly this movie was so incredibly lame. I wish I had read the other reviews before watching it. The fight scenes were so choreographed it was pathetic. The guy who plays the ghost was so weird. Marie Avgeropoulos's acting was so unnatural. You could tell she's trying to act like such a bad person but the plot with her character was weak. Her acting drove me nuts. In fact the overall plot for the movie was lame and weak. I think Madison Bailey's performance was decent. Don't watch this movie. It's an hour and 45 minutes you won't get back.

Good movie... people giving this a low rating is bogus

I don't get why these action movies are getting low ratings. Y'all do realize that "thriller" like situation very seldomly happen in real life right? Of course the movies are gonna have somewhat along the same storyline. There is nothing new under the sun. The fight scene were great. The characters (other than the lady who played Naomi) were great. I'm willing to bet that the people who rate movies like this lead the most boring and miserable lives and like to speak ill about anything. This is a movie. A FICTIONAL movie. Would you guys rather make a thriller about you complaining to HOA about your neighbor's siding being the wrong color?? Whew. Anywho... I took the movie for what it was. An action/thriller and it was GOOD 😎👏🏾

Acting/Story Good...Fight Scenes Could Be Better

Acting/Story Good...Fight Scenes are Meh!

"The Painter" is a fast-paced action thriller that delivers on its promise of adrenaline and suspense. Charlie Weber stars as Peter, an ex-CIA operative who has left his violent past behind and become a successful painter. However, his peaceful life is shattered when a mysterious woman from his past, Sophia (Madison Bailey), reappears and asks for his help. Soon, Peter finds himself hunted by a ruthless killer (Max Montesi) and a rogue black ops program led by his former mentor, Byrne (Jon Voight). Peter must use his skills and instincts to survive and protect Sophia, while uncovering the truth behind the conspiracy.

The film is directed by Kimani Ray Smith, who creates a tense and immersive atmosphere with his stylish cinematography and editing. The action scenes are well-choreographed, but could have been a little better executed. The film also benefits from a solid script by Brian Buccellato, who adds some twists and surprises to the familiar plot. The dialogue is witty and sharp, with some humorous moments that lighten the mood.

The cast is one of the film's strengths, as they deliver convincing and charismatic performances. Weber is a likable and relatable protagonist, who shows both vulnerability and courage. Bailey is a charming and mysterious love interest, who has a strong chemistry with Weber. Montesi is a menacing and relentless villain, who poses a serious threat to the heroes. Voight is a veteran actor who brings gravitas and complexity to his role as the mastermind behind the scheme.

"The Painter" is not a groundbreaking or original film, but it is a highly entertaining and satisfying one. It is a well-made and well-acted action thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you wanting more. If you are a fan of the genre, you will not be disappointed by "The Painter."

I borrowed the start of the review... SORRY!

Apologies to toonarly for copying and pasting his review, but it saved me a lot of time.

Like the beekeeper, the bricklayer , the engineer, the equalizer is this new story about a similar "common job" person called "the painter" like all the others he's very good at his "common job" but underneath is a very well trained CIA operative... and bla, bla, bla.

It is the second time today that I stop at around 30 something minutes to write a review, just because I have to get it out now... there is nothing these people will (or can) do until the end of the movie to change my opinion.

Although I will finish watching it (that's how sad and empty my life is), I will pose some questions:

  • Why would John Voigt accept to take part in this mummery?

  • The two CIA "girls" are the most out of place characters to ever appear in a film (I have been watching about 2 a week since I was 6, and I am now 45). I would understand if they were gorgeous (movie is bad, so atttention has to be drawn from somewhere), or if they were ugly (meaning they were cast by skill)... they are just "pffff looking" and flat out bad actresses... unbeliavably artificial!!!!!

  • Do directors watch the scenes after shotting them? Isn't there anyone there to questionn the acting? Can'y anyone with common sense come out and say: "I see better acting in Cambodian brothels! Do better!"?

  • Isn't "attack on the cinema industry" categorized as felony? Making movies like this should get people in jail (not the actors... these poor bunch don't have more in them. It's their bosses who should be arrested!)?

The star I give is for Leah Gibson... she is mesmerizingly pretty in a very natural way and plays her simple part just as it's meant for (I hope someone, at some point, gives her a good chance in a good movie).

At least I killed another 100 minutes of my inconsequential existance. I hope the rest of the movie causes me to fall asleep... it would dignify my afternoon.

A generic VOD filler whose tax friendly Canadian scenery plays host to a dull experience brought to life by intermittent fits of unintended humor.

Former CIA assassin Peter Barrett (Charlie Weber) is living off the grid rural Oregon as a painter after a tragedy 17 years prior caused a rift between his estranged wife and fellow agent Elena Maran (Rryla McIntosh) brought about by the death of their unborn child. Peter's life is interrupted when a young woman, Sophia (Madison Bailey), shows up claiming to be his and Elena's daughter and is seemingly hunted by CIA assassins. Seeking help from his mentor and adoptive father Henry Byrne (Jon Voight), Peter with Sophia in tow seeks to find out the reason behind Elena's apparent disappearance as they elude the corrupt section chief Naomi Piasecki (Marie Avgeropoulos) and her top assassin Ghost (Max Montesi).

The Painter is a 2024 action film that comes from Paramount's recent relaunch of the Republic Pictures label which is an extension of the company's Paramount Global Content Distribution which specializes in low to mid budget genre fare such as last year's Assassin Club. Produced with a primarily Canadian cast who are primarily affiliated with TV shows, the biggest names attached are producer Steven Paul and actor Jon Voight who are no strangers to working together with the two having jointly brought to life such films as the Baby Geniuses series, Karate Dog, and the Bratz movie through their regular collaborations. From the plot and production it's clear that The Painter is cookie cutter action junk tailor made for international deals at film markets and easy consumption through VOD, and while that alone shouldn't necessarily put you off something like this, the complete lack of passion and enthusiasm on display certainly is.

From the opening sequence which sees Jon Voight sporting a ridiculous fake moustache that's barely above the level of something from a joke shop to exposition laid on so thick you can practically cut through it, The Painter has all the hallmarks of a Canadian tax shelter production complete with threadbare production values that look barely above the level of a scrapped TV pilot. Charlie Weber is a charisma vacuum in a role that calls for him to be about as boring as you can make a leading man and Madison Bailey has no chemistry with Weber with the father/daughter dynamic never taking hold and leaving the actors feeling aloof from the material. Jon Voight sleepwalks through his role with the only unintended amusement coming from him being (according to the movie anyway) a "master of disguise". Despite being helmed by a stunt coordinator Kimani Ray Smith, The Painter is decidedly lacking in memorable action beats with most them not all that well staged, no real memorable choreography, and in some cases just outright leaps in logic such as a scene requiring Peter "teleport" in order to avoid certain death. That's to say nothing of the CIA that's so stupid that their strike team apparently goes out into the field with "CIA" written on their tactical gear (and hidden by just a velcro strap by the looks of things). The one (mostly) consistently enjoyable thing was Max Montesi as Ghost who doesn't give a good performance, but it's so energized in its scenery chewing tonal collision with the rest of the film that I did get some unintended laughs from it.

At a time when the assassin subgenre of action films leaves average viewers spoiled for choice with better alternatives (The Beekeeper is a much better movie of this type that leans into the silliness) The Painter has even less reason to exist beyond being bad at its job. As we await the inevitable day this film disappears into the back ends of Tubi and Amazon Freevee, when that day comes remember: there are much better options.

Why they bad reviews?

People loved daredevil so I'm not sure why this guys story is so unbelievable. Crazy to me. This movies is not as half as bad as most of the ratings are saying. Most said they watched for ten minutes and turned it off it was so bad. Excuse me? Also why was the dark commander so hated? Yall must be the enemy of wonkru. Having her and Emori was pretty cool to see work side by side. (The 100) I enjoyed the show, but i enjoy thrillers. I've seen much worse story lines so I couldn't believe the ratings this show has. It's good, don't mind the bad reviews. Their must be more to it than what's at face value.

Watched on paramount + on 1/4/2025.

SHOULD HAVE TRUSTED MY GUT.

Someone please tell me , who exactly approves these scripts.

Who in their sound mind sits down goes through the story & says wow! , this is a masterpiece, I will please my bosses with this piece of art.

Coz what inda daredevil was this piece of horse poop, the more you wish the next scene will shake things up , is the more things go south.

Actors are cold, script is recycled from over-recycled material , nothing new, dialogue makes you wish you can ask them to stop.

The action choreography is so cringe , more like they chose someone passing by to man the cameras after firing a professional who wouldn't take orders .

I'm sorry I couldn't sit through this pile of manure, I had to find something better than waste an HR on this.

Terrible, thanks to Marie Avgeropoulos/Max Montesi

Marie Avgeropoulos/Max Montesi was horrible and ruined the show. So inexperienced for Marie in playing different roles and made the movie terrible to watch. Why have a legend actor like Jon Voight up next to her. Its ridiculous seeing night and day in acting.

Max Montesi was a joke, might not have been his fault for the terrible writing for his character but him in this role with headphones was dumb from the start to have a young person in it.

I would not recommend this show unless your bored and need a action movie that could have been something if it wasn't for one character that should have been doing a different role in the show.

This movie had potential but became a huge failure to me.

Marie Avgeropoulos should have played a kid at least that might be believable. Any adult roles she isnt doing a good job in making it believable.

Yet another common worker with a secret past

Like the beekeeper, the bricklayer , the engineer, the equalizer is this new story about a similar "common job" person called "the painter" like all the others he's very good at his "common job" but underneath is a very well trained CIA operative who left the "company" because of a botched takedown, but is brought back in unexpectedly by his supposed daughter who he thought was killed in the botched takedown to find what happened to her mom and his wife. He also has an accident enhancing "superpower" that I won't give away here. Lots of twists and turns. Excellent script. Excellent cast with exception to Marie Avgeropoulos which to me seemed like she looked far too young ( like 18) and acted like a spoiled brat, me thinks a more seasoned actress could have been better, but she wasn't so bad as to ruin the picture. Jon Voight is always a pleasure to see in a movie. Lots of stellar action and fight scenes, no nudity, no sex or questionable content , lots of blood and gore and a few scenes may be too intense for young viewers, other than that enjoy a great story and a fun ride.

reviews over 2 are fake or posted by cast and crew

I watched exactly 20 minutes of this utter horrible trash bin of a movie and had to turn it off in disgust. I mean aren't production houses even making an effort any more? They just pump out generic non-descript horrible waste-of-time flicks to fill time slots on streaming services? Absolutely disgusting! I see what is actually going on: they hire one "name" actor and pay him really well for few minutes of acting so that they can plaster his name all over a low budget, super cheap, bottom of the barrel flick to make it more appealing to the masses, or let's call it their audience, who they obviously have no respect for since some genius actually approved this flick to be made and put of screen. I mean, COME ON!!!!!!!!! Stay away from this garbage folks, trust me.

Needs Better Acting

Within the first 20 minutes of the start, I was thinking ,this would be a much better movie with better actors. Cases in point, Charlie Weber, Marie Avgeropoulos, and Leah Gibson (maybe not quite as bad as the others). No real emotion or even inflection when they're speaking. There were bright spots...Madison Bailey with the emotion and timing, very believable. And Max Montesi with the crazy, VERY BELIEVABLE. As highly predictable as the movie is, it is fast moving with decent action throughout, thank goodness. I don't know that I would actually recommend The Painter, but I did watch it to the end.

I never stop movies early...but

I had to turn it off after it got silly. First of all, seventeen years later, nobody looks different? And then when he gets a phone call, he holds the phone to his ear? And the kid in the car who can hear a quiet conversation outside the car twenty feet away is handed thumping headphones and actually is putting them on? Gimme a break...

I mean, if you want to set up a scenario that might be stretching the boundaries of believability, so be it. I'm down for that. But if you set up the world, then live in it. Don't disregard the reality you've created by failing to consider it almost immediately.

Another one bites the dust

If I see a movie with a bad rating, I come straight to the folks that love watching movies. If there's even a glimmer of hope, I will give it a shot, because I would say it's been 50/50 on if it was worth it or not. Let me start with Marie Avgeropoulos, honey stick to loaning your voice to cartoons. She literally looks like she's forcing out a (NUMBER 2) when she is attempting to show ANY emotion. Beautiful young lady indeed, maybe call Dana White, no doubt you could be a UFC ring girl. There you have it, two options, because you have no business on the big screen. She's not the only bad actor, but she's by far the worst actress I've seen in a while...my wife said she's equivalent to Jessica Simpson's sister attempting to sing. Charlie Weber isn't a bad actor, but he's about as believable a bad ass as Charlie Harper from Two and a Half Men. If your lead can't carry the plot, and you have Miss Marie Avgeropoulos as a main character, your movie is doomed. In reality this was a Jason Stratham script, would have made this movie a 6.5, hell Jeremy Renner could even saved this movie, as long as Marie is replaced. If Florence Pugh played Miss Marie's character, the movie is a 7.
