Donnie Yen fights tooth and nail in order to save an innocent man in his latest directorial, The Prosecutor. We do get a demonstration of his skill as a legendary martial artist, but the movie is actually much more than that. The story is quite dense, with several layers and a bit of complication. Part courtroom drama, part action thriller, The Prosecutor pretty much hits all the right notes, resulting in a very entertaining experience for you if you’re into this kind of cinema. Let us head to the discussion.
Spoilers Ahead
What Happens In The Movie?
I don’t exactly see the point of not starting the movie with Yen’s Mr. Fok joining the Department of Justice (DOJ) and taking it from there. I mean, the first fifteen minutes don’t particularly add anything to the story, other than establishing what kind of a man Mr. Fok is.

The Prosecutor is a gripping legal action drama inspired by real-life events. In Hong Kong, a young man, Ma Ka-Kit, is arrested after unknowingly accepting a parcel containing drugs. Initially, he pleads not guilty, but under the advice of his lawyers, Lee and Au Pak, he changes his plea in hopes of receiving a lighter sentence. However, the strategy backfires when former police officer-turned-prosecutor Fok begins to suspect Ka-Kit’s innocence. During the trial, Fok shocks the courtroom by questioning witnesses in a way that favors the defendant. As he digs deeper in pursuit of justice, he uncovers a far more sinister truth—one that places Ka-Kit and those connected to the case in grave danger.

Action and martial arts icon Donnie Yen continues to thrill audiences all over the globe, and one of his best movies is now finding renewed success on free streaming. It is fair to say that Donnie Yen‘s last stint as a director, which came with 2023’s “Sakra”, was quite the misfire from the martial arts legend. Despite housing decent action set pieces, as can be expected from Yen, its narrative shortcomings were ultimately its downfall. This is also why there is both some apprehension and a lot of anticipation over his latest directorial, “The Prosecutor”, whose promotional material seems to have promised a return to form for Yen both as a director and actor. Let’s find out if it stays true to its promise.

Following the release of his recent directorial effort The Prosecutor, and amid the news that he could helm his upcoming John Wick spin-off, it might be a good idea for Donnie Yen fans to check out his other, recent martial arts action epic. Which he both directed and stars in, of course. Titled Sakra, the action outing was released in 2023 and sees Yen take the helm of this wuxia film, which can now be found on a variety of streaming platforms.
Directed by Donnie Yen in his first directorial effort for two decades, Sakra is available to stream on Apple TV, Hi-yah, and more in the United States and Prime Video in the United Kingdom and elsewhere. Starring Chen Yuqi, Cya Liu, and Kara Wai, Sakra was a big hit in China, and is adapted from the 1960s novel “Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils" by Jin Yong, and follows Yen as a...

Donnie Yen is reportedly in talks to direct the John Wick Caine spinoff, and his movie Sakra shows why he is the perfect person to do so. When Donnie Yen played the John Wick franchise's blind assassin, Caine, the character soon became a fan favorite, almost stealing the show from John Wick himself. Caine is one of the strongest characters in the John Wick movies, and his nearly supernatural fighting ability made him the perfect candidate for a spin-off. While the franchise director, Chad Stahelski was expected to direct the project, this may not be the case.
It appears that Donnie Yen may direct John Wick's Caine spinoff, which is exciting news, as Yen's experience in both acting and directing makes him a great candidate for the role. Donnie Yen is continuing his return to the director's chair after a 20-year break with The Prosecutor. Having started his career as a stuntman in Hong Kong, Yen first began finding success with the TV adaptation of Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury, as well as choreographing and starring in numerous Hollywood action movies, including Blade II. Though having worked as an action director multiple times throughout his career, Yen's list of full directorial efforts is relatively smaller, ranging from 1997's Legend of the Wolf to 2004's Protégé de la Rose Noire, after which he wouldn't direct again until 2023's Sakra.

Donnie Yen reveals how a change in the script for his latest feature, The Prosecutor, allowed for him to reunite with one of his Ip Man co-stars. Yen, who has previously portrayed Chirrut Imwe in 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and High Table assassin Caine in John Wick: Chapter 4, is best known for playing Ip Man in the movie series of the same name focused on the Wing Chun master. The Prosecutor sees Yen portraying a public prosecutor going to great lengths to defend his client, by any means necessary.
When speaking to Screen Rant, Yen opened up about how one notable casting choice for The Prosecutor almost never came to pass due to the movie's original script. Yen revealed that originally, Kent Cheng's Bao Ding was envisioned as a younger character to better fit the dynamic. However, Yen reconsidered once he felt that an older actor...

As the adage goes, justice is blind: by that, of course, they mean it's unbiased. In The Prosecutor, both starring and directed by modern martial arts legend Donnie Yen, Yen plays a prosecutor who finds justice blind in a different sense: there's a Justice System that closes its eyes to actual justice. Yen's prosecutor proceeds as any good state representative does, and punches justice in the face until its eyes open. It's an interesting genre hybrid with some exceptional moments of action and strong character work, but there's a lack of balance between different plot threads and tones that keep the film from succeeding as a unified whole.

Donnie Yen has made his name synonymous with ass-kicking in the last four decades in the action sphere. In addition to dedicating his craft to Hong Kong's cinema, he's appeared in Hollywood blockbusters like the John Wick franchise, the Star Wars Universe, and Disney's live-action realm. As with any profession, to have a well-rounded grasp on something, it helps tremendously to have an understanding of many different elements, and Yen is a multi-hyphenate to the highest degree. From hands-on stunt work in the height of the '80s and '90s kung fu films to writing, producing, and directing, he's done it all. Still, his latest venture, The Prosecutor, a legal drama/action hybrid, gave even Yen pause.

Donnie Yen plays Fok Chi-ho in The Prosecutor, a role that is very different from his usual action-hero characterizations. Fok’s rise from a committed police officer to a crusading prosecutor is an interesting look at morality in a broken legal system. It’s a transformation that appeals to today’s audience, reflecting a generational change in which the distinction between right and wrong becomes more ambiguous.
Fok’s reasons come from a deep-seated desire for justice, which is motivated by disillusionment with the system he used to serve. You can feel this conflict inside him as he tries to deal with the limits of his new role while still being naturally drawn to the rough edges of his past.
Fok’s unwavering determination and instinct to be a father make his personality even stronger when his age is considered. At 61, Yen gives Fok a worn-out look that adds another layer to his performance.

Wildfires rampaging through Los Angeles means moviegoing won’t be top of mind for Angelenos. The saga of John Wick is getting even larger with the announcement of a Caine spinoff that will follow a new character on their own action-packed adventure. Beginning in 2014, the John Wick series concerns the titular character, played by Keanu Reeves, who embarks on various missions of revenge against the criminal underworld. Despite their simple premise, the movies in the explosive franchise are noted for their stylish execution and larger-than-life action sequences. Each film has built upon the last, and John Wick is a certified moneymaker.
John Wick: Chapter 4 was not only the biggest and baddest of the series thus far, but the ending of Wick's story was seemingly told. Though the video game adaptation genre is more alive than ever, Donnie Yen's long-gestating adaptation of an underrated action game has found itself scrapped. Having begun his career as a stuntman in the Hong Kong film industry, Yen steadily enjoyed a rise to stardom as an actor in the '90s with the TV adaptation of Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury, as well as making his directorial debut with 1997's Legend of the Wolf. The 2000s, however, would see him break out on an international scope as he began choreographing and appearing in many Hollywood action movies, namely Blade II and the Oscar-nominated Hero.

The Rotten Tomatoes score has arrived for The Prosecutor, and Donnie Yen's six-year streak remains intact. Featuring Yen in the director's chair on top of being the star, The Prosecutor follows a former prosecutor as he helps a young man who has been wrongly accused of drug trafficking, uncovering corruption at every turn. The movie marks Yen's follow-up to Sakra (2023) and to John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023), the latter of which saw him playing blind assassin Caine opposite Keanu Reeves.
Accompanying the movie's release on January 10, The Prosecutor has now debuted on Rotten Tomatoes to an impressive score of 93% with 15 reviews, as of writing. Though this score could fluctuate as more reviews are added, it marks another in a long line of Yen movies that have earned the "Fresh" designation, including Sakra, John Wick: Chapter 4, Raging Fire (2021), Mulan (2020), Enter the Fat Dragon (2020), and Ip Man 4: The Finale (2019). The action’s hot but the dramatic temperature varies in “The Prosecutor,” a flashy combination of Hong Kong crime story and legal drama starring and directed by Donnie Yen. The veteran action star is convincing and charismatic as a cop who quits the force to become a crusading Department of Justice prosecutor but is let down by a screenplay that’s prone to bouts of melodrama in and out of the courtroom. Entertaining enough despite its flaws, “The Prosecutor” has topped the Hong Kong box office for two weeks (thus far) since opening on Dec. 21 and ought to perform well in limited U.S. theatrical release from Jan. 10.

The prosecution never rests in Donnie Yen’s new action-infused legal drama The Prosecutor, in which the veteran martial artist plays a righteous cop who quits the force to join the Department of Justice when he feels the legal system is letting too many criminals slip through its fingers.
Yen directs as well as stars alongside a host of familiar faces including Francis Ng, Julian Cheung and the increasingly ubiquitous Michael Hui, but Yen’s hardcore action fanbase may be left wanting. The Prosecutor too often feels more invested in bludgeoning its audience into submission using the tenets of Hong Kong’s rule of law, rather than the iron fists of traditional street justice.

One of the great things about the John Wick franchise, beyond Keanu Reeves' stone-cold portrayal of the titular character and the way it has redefined how action is depicted on screen, is that it has introduced secondary characters that have garnered nearly as much interest as Wick himself. The most recent case of this has been Donnie Yen's blind assassin character Caine, who was first introduced in the most recent installment, John Wick: Chapter 4. Yen crafted a character that stole every scene he was in and, seeing the potential that Caine could have on his own, a spin-off was mentioned as being in development. Not much has been revealed about the project since its announcement, but now word comes that Yen is in talks to showcase his skills in front of and behind the camera.

The upcoming Caine movie could make John Wick history. Donnie Yen recently shared that he is in talks to direct his character's spinoff movie, which would mark the first time that a John Wick movie was directed by its main star.
Yen addressed the possibility of directing the Caine spinoff during a recent interview with Collider to promote his new movie, The Prosecutor. "It is true," the actor confirmed after being told that franchise architect Chad Stahelski had previously mentioned Yen potentially stepping behind the camera. "I think both the fans, as well as the studio, want this to happen, and we'll see. I don't know, Steve. I can only tell you that much," Yen added. "But yes, we are talking, and we are talking intimately. We'll see what happens."

Donnie Yen, fresh off his critically acclaimed performance as the blind assassin Caine in John Wick: Chapter 4, has confirmed that he may be doing more than just starring in a spin-off based on the character. In an exclusive interview with Collider’s Steve Weintraub while promoting his latest movie, The Prosecutor, Yen revealed that not only is he set to reprise his role, but there’s a strong possibility he may direct the project himself. Adding fuel to the fire, Weintraub shared that John Wick director Chad Stahelski himself mentioned Yen’s potential involvement behind the camera. Yen, while flattered, also expressed the weight of responsibility such an opportunity would bring. “It is true,” he confirmed.

Sixty-one-year-old martial arts legend Donnie Yen may not be a spring chicken anymore (even his Iron Monkey days are behind him), but the “Ip Man” star is still committed to fighting bad guys with the best of them. Exhibit A: “The Prosecutor,” a solid genre hybrid in which Yen directs himself as a hero cop who decides to become Hong Kong’s most righteous lawyer in order to personally seal the cracks in the region’s legal system. So begins the rare movie that could accurately be described as a “bone-crunching courtroom thriller,” as Yen’s character adopts an uncommonly hands-on approach to arguing his first big case.

Jackie Chan once attempted to break out of his signature comedy style in the early part of the millennium when he made New Police Story, which had him playing a more dramatic role as an alcoholic ex-cop. He would follow it up with 2005’s The Myth, which would be half of an Armor of God-type movie where he played an archeologist and half of a period film where Chan also played a General of a historical Chinese army. Chan returns with a new sequel to The Myth, titled A Legend. This film reunites him with director Stanley Tong, who directed Chan in movies like Rumble in the Bronx and Police Story 3: Supercop.
