America’S Got Talent — “Auditions” Episode 2003 — Pictured: Urban Theory — (Photo by: Trae Patton/NBC) Things are officially heating up at America’s Got Talent! Auditions Night 3 brought out a truly unforgettable mix of the best, the strangest, and definitely some of the most controversial acts we’ve seen yet. Plus, a little behind-the-scenes peek showed us just how real things get! Host Terry Crews revealed that for this 20th season, AGT is embracing a “less polished, but more real” vibe, with tons of behind-the-scenes moments. He likened it to seeing the cooks in a great restaurant – you appreciate the meal more when you see what goes into it. This means even technical mishaps, like a friendly humanoid robot named Pepper overheating and sadly missing her audition, are part of the journey. But for the acts who did make it to the stage, it was a day of incredible highs, surprising lows, and pure talent!

Running five minutes longer than “Wicked” — and still nearly an hour below “The Brutalist” — the “2025 Oscar Nominated Short Films: Documentary” package makes for a heavy evening at the movies. Bodycam evidence of police brutality, raw survivor reactions to school shootings, a deep dive into the death penalty and so on. Shorts International’s annual round-up is essential viewing for those determined either to win their Oscar pool or to keep up with what the Academy considers the year’s best nonfiction work. But it’s not an easy watch, and though the finalists all seem “worthy” enough, one can’t help but crave a little levity.
Nothing new there. This award (which differs from the feature-length categories in that the nominees weren’t made for the big screen) often downplays formal innovation in favor of the underlying issues addressed by the finalists. That makes the first nominee, the New...

Little films are a very big deal at this year’s Academy Awards. Topics as heavy as Ptsd, ethnic cleansing and the immigration system, and as light as music, kissing and children with a passion to perform are all vying for the short film Oscars. Here’s a look at the nominees in the documentary shorts, animated shorts and live-action shorts categories.
Documentary Shorts
The proliferation of platforms distributing short subject documentaries in recent years has led to an abundance of high-quality films that pack a punch. This year’s five nominated short nonfiction docs stand out for their impactful and exquisite storytelling.
It’s anyone’s guess as to what film will take home The Little Gold Man, but if previous award season wins mean anything, Bill Morrison’s “Incident” could be a frontrunner. Told using police surveillance footage, Morrison offers a raw look at the Chicago police shooting of a Black man.

In Japan, you can set your watch by the arrival of a train. “Delays” (if that’s the word) tend to be calculated in seconds – not minutes or hours.
“This precision results from a combination of advanced technology, meticulous planning, and a deep-rooted cultural emphasis on punctuality and respect for others,” notes the website ScienceABC.
But how do you cultivate a society that values punctuality and respect for others? The key can be found in the country’s primary school system, observes filmmaker Ema Ryan Yamazaki. Her Oscar-contending documentary Instruments of a Beating Heart, a New York Times Op-Doc, goes inside a typical Tokyo school where kids are preparing to complete first grade. Yamazaki herself is a product of that educational environment.
“If you wonder why Japan is the way it is, why our trains run on time, why there’s no trash on the streets — we’re not born that way,...

Trombone Champ became an unexpected global phenomenon in the quirky world of rhythm games, transforming from a 2D comedy music experience to a full-fledged virtual reality adventure. Trombone Champ: Unflattened, created by Flat2VR, takes the original’s charmingly ludicrous concept and brings it into the immersive world of VR, allowing players to simulate playing the trombone with motion controllers.
Originally a PC and Switch sensation where players honked their way through classical songs, the game has since developed into a VR experience that enhances its underlying comedy. Players physically operate a virtual trombone, adjusting the pitch and timing notes while surrounded by cartoonish Mii-like characters who react to musical mishaps.
This review will explore the VR makeover, examining how Trombone Champ: Unflattened uses virtual reality to enhance its comic rhythm gameplay. We’ll examine the fundamental mechanics, musical selection, gameplay challenges, and unique sense of humor that distinguish this...

Chris Wallace may not be the most obvious artistic muse, but Grammy-winner Jon Batiste owes some credit to the veteran newsman for inspiring his latest musical experiment.
Last year, the pianist and composer was a guest on the CNN/Max show Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace. Remarking on how Batiste bridges divides with such category-scrambling efforts as his album World Music Radio and his magnum opus American Symphony (inspiring the Oscar-nominated doc of the same name) Wallace put him on the spot. “Can you show us how you can break a barrier, a musical barrier, go from one genre to another,” he asked.
The New Orleans native — whose career has taken him from Juilliard to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to the highest echelons of jazz, pop and classical — happily obliged.
He turned to the piano and began playing Beethoven’s Für Elise, gradually infusing it with blue notes and gospel chords.

Double eliminations are always tough on Dancing With The Stars, especially early on in the competition. However, many viewers don’t think Family Matters star Reginald VelJohnson deserved to advance to week three — especially over Tori Spelling.

Here’s what we know so far: Anna Delvey couldn’t be found after night one of Dancing with the Stars because she was off crying in the bathroom. Apparently, the infamous subject of Netflix’s Inventing Anna read some negative comments online about her opening night cha cha and she just couldn’t take the pressure.

Dancing with the Stars season 33 week 2 scorecard: Who went home on DWTS?
The Dancing with the Stars season 33 premiere on Sept. 17 did not send anyone home. Each duo was introduced and performed their first dance, giving audiences and judges a good idea of where they stand and their chances of improvement. It was quite the event! As Alfonso Ribeiro shared in Week 2, the season 33 premiere was the most-watched in years!
No one was sent home at the end of Week 1, but the scores have been added to this week’s scores to decide who’ll be going home. But it’s not only one duo packing and going home this week, but Two! That’s right, we got a double elimination. Did you cast your vote? They can make all of the difference!
Week 2 was Oscars Night, so all songs are from popular, critically acclaimed movies. How did everyone do this week?...

Dancing with the Stars Season 33 is about to take a hard left turn.
The season premiere aired earlier this week, and everyone stayed in the competition for the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy for another week.
However, the second episode of the season will feature a double elimination, shifting the ballroom dynamics quite a bit.
With the cast able to perform their first performances of the season without the threat of going home the same night, the heat will be turned up, and we’ll have to watch to see whether there will be any mistakes with the increased pressure.
Losing two competitors this early in the season is a big swing, but it will be a great way to eliminate the worst performers, assuming viewers vote based on their performances alone.
Despite scoring a decent 18 out of 30 during the premiere, Anna Delvey is probably on borrowed time.

The John Wick franchise is a love letter to classic movies with nods to Die Hard, Enter the Dragon, and The Matrix. From music cues to iconic scenes, John Wick movies reference cinematic history. With influences from Lawrence of Arabia to The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, John Wick is a masterful homage to film classics.
From Enter the Dragon to Lawrence of Arabia, the John Wick franchise is jam-packed with references to classic movies. John Wick was conceived as a mishmash of the visual style of neo-noir, the fight choreography of martial arts movies, and the operatic violence of spaghetti westerns, so it makes sense that the franchise has drawn from a deep well of cinematic influences. From a nightclub named after a French heist film to a criminal underworld radio station named after a kung fu subgenre, the John Wick series has more movie homages and inside...

When Arte Germany CEO Wolfgang Bergmann approached Toronto director Larry Weinstein in January 2023 about making a documentary to mark the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, the filmmaker didn’t exactly break into a chorus of “Ode to Joy.”
Nor could he have anticipated that his film “Beethoven’s Nine: Ode to Humanity,” which premieres in Toronto at Hot Docs on April 28, would be not only his first to break the fourth wall but also his most personal to date.
A prolific director-producer since his early years with Canada’s Rhombus Films, Weinstein has made numerous acclaimed creative music docs, including “Beethoven’s Hair,” a 2005 forensic adventure exploring the composer’s physical and psychic woes. The prospect of making a second Beethoven film, especially with several “Ninth films” already in circulation, seemed dim.
“There wasn’t a lot of time to come up with a big idea,” he told Variety in early April.

When The Jonas Brothers open their show in Brisbane by walking out to your animated kid show’s theme tune, then that theme song and that show have done way more than entertain some 6-year-olds. The show in question, “Bluey,” has been a phenomenon for a while — it’s approved by the kids of “Abbott Elementary” as well as millions worldwide — and the music by composer Joff Bush and a coterie of talented collaborators has fueled two albums and untold instances of “Dance Mode.”
Music has always anchored the wordless sequences where “Bluey” reaches its most poignant heights — whether gently cribbing from Gustav Holst as younger sister Bingo swims past the planets in her dream in “Sleepy Time” or ever-so-slightly tweaking a recurring theme as Rusty walks off the cricket pitch in “Cricket” and high fives his future self as that Rusty steps up to a much bigger stage. But the latest,...

Billy Joel‘s Madison Square Garden (Msg) concerts are coming to an end, but there’s still time to see him at the famous New York City arena.
The New York local first began performing for Msg in 2014 and, in October, started the countdown to his last ten shows. The “Uptown Girl” singer currently holds the record for most appearances at Msg.
“Madison Square Garden is the center of the universe as far as I’m concerned,” Joel is known to have said. “It has the best acoustics, the best audiences, the best reputation, and the best history of great artists who have played there. It is the iconic, holy temple of rock and roll for most touring acts and, being a New Yorker, it holds a special significance to me.”

The countdown to Billy Joel’s last Madison Square Garden concert has begun.
On October 20, the first of Joel’s last ten concerts at Msg kicked off to a nostalgic start as he sang his top hits like “Uptown Girl” and “Piano Man” throughout the show. That Friday, he told his fans he had “bad news” and “good news.”
“The bad news is I don’t have any new songs for you,” he said during the concert. “The good news is you don’t have to sit through songs you didn’t know that you don’t want to hear in the first place.”
Since 2014, the Grammy singer has played one show at Msg every month. The 74-year-old currently holds the most appearances at Msg and is planning to end at 150 shows next year.

Since 2007’s Sky Blue Sky, Wilco has settled into a more straightforward musical style defined by stripped-back, acoustic instrumentation and Jeff Tweedy’s confessional songwriting. The band’s latest, Cousin, seeks to fold Tweedy and company’s past into their present, exploring a more experimental and messy sound than their other recent releases.
This is due in no small part to Cate Le Bon’s varied production style. Cousin opens with the dense “Infinite Surprise,” whose main melodic hook is buried within layers of guitars, feedback, synths, and cacophonous strings. Tweedy’s vocals sound frailer than usual, almost frightened, which complements the track’s unsettling atmosphere. It’s perhaps the grandest opening statement to any Wilco album since Yankee Hotel Foxtrot’s “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart.”

The ultra-violent superhero satire The Boys is known for its shocking visuals, blood-soaked violence, and a burning antipathy towards anything in a cape, but in-between the dark critiques of Marvel and DC's crime-fighters, there's a surprising emotional core that has a lot to say about love, grief, and masculinity. Each of the heroes of The Boys has suffered a terrible loss, channeling their experiences into keeping Supes under control, and foiling the ambitions of the Homelander and Vought-America. It's therefore not that surprising to learn that each member of Billy Butcher's team can be read as expressing a different aspect of the Five Stages of Grief.
The Five Stages of Grief - aka the Kübler-Ross model - is a theoretical description of distinct emotional states people experience while processing grief. Essentially an example of pop psychology without much empirical support, the Five Stage of Grief have still become enmeshed in popular culture,...

When Alfred Hitchcock fired the composer behind “Vertigo” and “Psycho” over creative differences during the production of “Torn Curtain” in May 1966, it was clear that film music was changing. Although Bernard Herrmann’s theremin-laden score for “The Day the Earth Stood Still” had changed the game, his rugged determination not to succumb to rock ‘n’ roll, jazz, or (God forbid) “theme tune” scores that were quickly becoming all the rage in Hollywood made him an enemy of serial pragmatist Hitchcock. They never worked together again.
Three months later, The Beatles released “Revolver,” with what The Village Voice called a “bent and pulverised sound” — and pop music had gone electronic. Amid times a-changin’, Herrmann dug his heels in. His final score a decade later, for “Taxi Driver,” is as classic as they come.
When the synthesizer again altered the sound of film music in the 1980s, Herrmann’s fingerprints were, ironically,...

Xavier Henry-Rashid’s London-based sales agency Film Republic has closed deals for multiple territories on “F*cking Bornholm,” a tart comedy of social discomfort. The film had its international premiere in the main competition section of Karlovy Vary Film Festival, where it won the Europa Cinemas Label award.
In his review, Variety’s Guy Lodge commented that Polish writer-director Anna Kazejak‘s “precise, piquant film deserves wider festival exposure and discerning distributor interest.” It has now been acquired by Iceland’s Bio Paradis, Arsenal for Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Lithuania’s Garsas, Slovenia’s Rtv, Israel’s Yes and Sweden’s Lucky Dogs. The international trailer has its debut below.

Gary Oldman is one of the greatest film actors of all time. His versatility is so established now that there are internet memes about his uncanny ability to just simply vanish into a role. No other actor could convincingly play real-life figures as diverse as Lee Harvey Oswald and Winston Churchill, let alone such contrasting literary characters as Dracula and George Smiley. It's this versatility that has led to his success and longevity as an actor; he can play the hero, the villain, a supporting role, or a mere cameo, and never gives a part anything less than his all, whether he's playing Beethoven or a CGI peacock.
It's true that he displayed a propensity for playing villains in outlandish science fiction romps like "The Fifth Element," popcorn actioners like "Air Force One," or serial killer thrillers like "Hannibal." However, more recently he has received long overdue recognition for his...

Update, writethru: With an estimated 58.2 of the vote, Emmanuel Macron has been reelected as President of France, defeating extreme right National Rally leader Marine Le Pen who amassed 41.8. Macron now becomes the eighth French incumbent to win a second term.
Coming into today’s final round of the election, independent centrist Macron was leading in the polls, but throughout her campaign, Le Pen had gained momentum compared to the first time the two faced off in 2017. Today marked the second runoff between candidates from parties other than the traditional left and right.
Voter abstention today was estimated at 28.7, according to media reports. This is higher than in 2017, and is also more than the first round of voting two weeks ago. However, it is not a record breaker.

Despite all the high-tech tricks, political posturing and pyrotechnics, the best part of the Closing Ceremony of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics proved to be the athletes.
Competing the past two weeks amidst rising international tensions, pandemic quarantines and with a heavy-handed host, the participants injected a bit of fun this morning into the tightly scripted affair. Following the traditional flag waving parade of nations into the reasonably full Bird’s Nest, American flag-bearer, Elana Meyers Taylor and her fellow masked team members from around the globe let off some stream cavorting on the giant stadium’s floor to a loop of Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Ode To Joy” over the protests of Chinese officials who repeatedly asked everyone to take their seats.
This year’s Winter Olympics was unique in many ways, but it may not be a bad idea for future games to let the actual athletes rule the roost more often.

Since the first Oscar for Best Actress was presented to Janet Gaynor at the 1929 ceremony, 77 different women have heard their names called on the big night, 14 of whom have won more than once. In 1982, Katharine Hepburn became the first, and to date only, individual to win four acting Oscars, all in the leading category. She held the record for most competitive acting nominations (12) from 1982 until Meryl Streep tied her in 2000, and then surpassed her in 2003. Streep currently holds the record for acting nominations with 21, 17 as a lead and four in supporting. However, it’s one of her contemporaries who is right behind Hepburn for most wins for Best Actress.

It’s summer, everyone! And with its relatively sparse list of new releases for July 2021, Hulu seems to be subtlety imploring its subscribers to go outside.
Don’t get us wrong: Hulu’s library offerings get a big upgrade this month. July 1 sees the arrival of great films like Galaxy Quest, Fargo, and Caddyshack. Bill and Ted Face the Music premieres on July 2 and its followed by Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar on July 9. Not bad stuff! It’s just that, outside of the library titles, there isn’t much to go off of.
Hulu’s only major original release this month is the FX on Hulu production American Horror Stories on July 15. As its name implies, the show is a spinoff of American Horror Story and will feature self-contained horror episodes rather than a season-long arc. If you’ll allow this geriatric millennial to deploy one truly ancient meme: “Yo dawg,...

Using Leonard Bernstein’s own voice, collected from his myriad interviews throughout his life, as well as personal letters, many of which were published in the 2013 book “The Leonard Bernstein Letters,” Douglas Tirola’s “Bernstein’s Wall” works as both a broad overview of the famous conductor’s life, as well as a deep dive into his political activism. Framed around Bernstein’s famous 1989 “Ode to Freedom” concert that coincided with the Fall of Berlin Wall – and saw Bernstein change Schiller’s “Ode to Joy” to reflect the word “Freedom” – Tirola’s documentary allows Bernstein to create a political bildungsroman, as he talks through his entangled interests of artistic creation and social change.

NBC has given a pilot order to Night Court, a follow-up to the classic legal comedy series, starring The Big Bang Theory’s Melissa Rauch and the original series’ co-star John Larroquette, reprising his Emmy-winning role.
Written/executive produced by Dan Rubin based on the original series created by Reinhold Weege, the multi-camera Night Court centers on unapologetic optimist judge Abby Stone (Rauch), the daughter of the late Harry Stone, who follows in her father’s footsteps as she presides over the night shift of a Manhattan arraignment court and tries to bring order to its crew of oddballs and cynics, most notably former night court prosecutor Dan Fielding (Larroquette).
Melissa Rauch and Winston Rauch executive produce via their After January production company; Larroquette is a producer. After January produces in association with Warner Bros. Television, which was also the studio behind the original series, and Universal Television.

Five competitive local titles have announced as of Monday that they will be vying for box office supremacy in China over the May 1 Labor Day weekend, a public holiday.
They include a long-anticipated video game adaptation, an omnibus pandemic film helmed by three different female big shots from China, Hong Kong and the U.S., a sleek Aaron Kwok-starring thriller, a TV series adaptation and the first title from helmer Li Yu not to star the now-disgraced Fan Bingbing in 14 years.
Their sales will be worth tracking, as holiday periods tend to be the most money-making in the world’s largest film market, where the February Chinese New Year box office set world records with an impressive $1.2 billion in sales in just six days.

Elisabeth Röhm’s new Lifetime movie “Girl in the Basement” is “a call to action about abuse on a very significant level,” the director told TheWrap.
The film stars Judd Nelson as a father who locks his daughter (played by Stefanie Scott) in the basement for 20 years, raping and assaulting her, and even fathering multiple children with her. Meanwhile, her mom and sister live upstairs and believe she ran away to start a new life away from them.
To many, this story might ring a bell. In 2008, Elisabeth Fritzl told Austrian police she had been held captive by her father for 24 years, which resulted in the birth of seven children who remained in captivity with her. While “Girl in the Basement” takes elements from the Fritzl case, Röhm said there were actual multiple stories that inspired the screenplay for her movie.
