Since the earliest days of Hollywood, the Western genre has proven to be incredibly versatile, with visionaries like John Ford, Sergio Leone and Howard Hawks bringing their own styles to the big screen. While most fans of the Old West know it for epic, classical and revisionist stories, horror has also been a core part of the genre for decades. Dating back to the earliest uses of claymation monsters in B-movie Westerns, filmmakers have used the desolate, lawless setting to great effect in telling scary stories.
Where some movies will lean into the horror element more, others make the scares almost incidental to the Old West setting. Regardless, the combined use of two genres that are best known for tension, isolation and danger has made for some truly great pieces of cinema. Ranging from overlooked popcorn movies to surprisingly deep takes on the American West, these movies are a great source of entertainment.

Director Brandon Slagle is known for his fun, quick, in-and-out style and prolific indie filmography. While no film production is easy, he arguably met his greatest challenge with the new alligator thriller, The Flood. Starring Nicky Whelan and Casper Van Dien among others, The Flood centers on a Louisiana prison being battered by a hurricane; the flooding gets so bad that a congregation of alligators makes their way into the prison, and soon inmates and guards must work together to survive.
As one can imagine, shooting the wet alligator film was no dry picnic. “There were a lot of challenges filming in water,” Van Dien told MovieWeb. “We were in abandoned buildings that they tried to waterproof, but then they pour the water into it, but you know, the building has rats and snakes and bugs and dirt. The water is clean when they put it in, then everybody's walking through it,...

Tagline: "You're Mission: Don't Die." Another Doom film is coming your way via Universal 1440 Entertainment and director Tony Giglio, titled Doom: Annihilation. Universal 1440 is the same production house behind Death Race 4: Beyond Anarchy and Giglio also wrote this film venture. Both Doom: Annihilation and Death Race 4 where shot in Bulgaria. And, the latest Doom production sounds very similar, in story, to the original 2005 film. Of course, both films are based off of the 1993 first-person action shooter game. This latest release borrows from the game's story with Space Marines investigating a distress call from a Martian moon. The 2019 version stars: Louis Mandylor (Daylight's End), Amy Manson (The Chameleon), Nina Bergman (Assassin X), Gavin Brocker and many more. The film's official teaser trailer is here. The clip does not reveal too much. However, fans of the series can see some of the film's settings and creatures. There is an action...

"What set this film apart from the typical post-apocalyptic zombie movies," wrote our own Hugo Ozman in his review, "are that the humans use powerful weapons while the creatures are fast and agile instead of slow and jerky, and these features really add to the intensity of the action scenes." Here's the official synopsis: Years after a mysterious plague has devastated the planet and turned most of humanity into blood-hungry creatures, a rogue drifter on a vengeful hunt stumbles across a band of survivors in an abandoned police station and reluctantly agrees to help...

There are a lot of post-apocalyptic films swirling around in the wind these days. Most of them have zombies, and the genre is honestly getting a bit tired.
That being said, I'm genuinely excited about the upcoming release of Daylight's End. I've had this one on my radar ever since I watched the trailer a while back.
The film is a post-apocalyptic action horror film starring Johnny Strong and Lance Henriksen. Directored by William Kaufman and written by Chad Law.
This one promises the big guns and action, and that's what I dig about this offering -- I like things that go boom! Plus Lance Hendriksen and the entire team involved in this movie makes it one you simply don't want to miss.
Daylight's End will release in limited theaters and on VOD on Friday, August 26th. Check out the synopsis and Exclusive Trailer Premiere below.

Last weekend was supposed to knock Suicide Squad from atop the box office, with three new releases hitting theaters after this superhero blockbuster suffered a massive 67.4% drop during its second week of release. Thanks to all three of those new releases (Ben-Hur, War Dogs and Kubo & the Two Strings) underperforming, Suicide Squad three-peated to become the #1 movie yet again. Now it looks to close out the month of August with a clean sweep. Standing in its way are three newcomers, Sony's horror-thriller Don't Breathe, The Weinstein Company's boxing biopic Hands of Stone and Lionsgate's action sequel Mechanic: Resurrection. If our predictions ring true though, we believe Don't Breathe does have a chance to win the last weekend of the summer.
It has certainly been an unusual summer box office, which closes out on a rather weird note. All three of these new releases are rated R. R-rated movies...

Most expected Warner Bros.' Suicide Squad to dominate at the box office throughout the month of August before it hit theaters three weeks ago. However, after suffering a huge second weekend drop of 67.4% last weekend, many believed that its reign would come to an end this weekend, with three new releases hitting theaters, the epic remake Ben-Hur, the animated adventure Kubo and the Two Strings and the true story adaptation War Dogs. As it turns out, all three of those newcomers underperformed leading to Suicide Squad winning for the third week in a row with $20.7 million.
Suicide Squad's $133.6 million made it the fourth-highest opening of the year. The debut falls below Marvel's Captain America: Civil War ($179.1 million), Warner Bros./DC's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($166 million) and Disney Pixar's Finding Dory ($135 million). Disney Pixar's Finding Dory is still the highest-grossing domestic release this year so far, with $473.8 million,...

Last weekend, Warner Bros.' Suicide Squad managed to win the top slot at the box office for a second time in a row with $43.5 million, despite a massive second-weekend drop of 67.4%. This Friday, it goes up against three wildly different movies, the epic remake Ben-Hur, the animated adventure Kubo and the Two Strings and the true story adaptation War Dogs. Regardless of who actually comes out on top, it's shaping up to be a rather close run, but we think Ben-Hur will win this round with $19.6 million, proof that the summer season is indeed coming to a close.

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by director William Kaufman. Director: William Kaufman. Writer: Chad Law. Cast: Johnny Strong, Lance Henriksen, Louis Mandylor and Chelsea Edmundson. Daylight's End is another collaboration between director William Kaufman (Sinners and Saints) and actor Johnny Strong. This time, events take place in a future world, where a devastating pandemic has turned the world into a haven for murderous cannibals. The film blends a number of genres, with action elements forefront. Meanwhile, Strong's score helps amplify the violent events onscreen. However, the film, admittedly, borrows from several films in the genre. Daylight's End is an exciting feature, in which the focus is on action and less on dramatic characterizations. The story begins with the character Rourke (Strong). Three years after a virus has decimated the world, Rourke is searching for revenge. He seeks the Alpha, a vampiric strongman. His hunt leads him into.
