‘Snakes And Ladders’ Netflix Review: This Satirical Mexican Dark Comedy Is Not For Everybody
Image
The moment you bring up a genre like dark comedy, you’ve opened yourself up for some easy criticism. This was not satirical enough, it wasn’t comical enough. What was so dark about it? That’s the kind of thing you can expect to hear when you bring up the subject. But putting all of that aside, the most important aspect of TV has to be its entertainment factor, and in all honesty, I’m left genuinely confused after watching the 8-episode Mexican series Snakes and Ladders. As the title suggests, the show is about ambition, backstabbing, corruption, betrayal, and anything else considered remotely immoral in human beings. It’s a show that defines the contradictions of human nature. The show follows an innocent woman named Dora, who finds herself in a predicament when she launches herself into a campaign to become the headmistress of the school where she works.

The Emmy Award-nominated actress recently starred in and executive produced “Cooper’s Bar,” which began as an independent series before being picked up at AMC Networks. “Rhea Seehorn exemplifies the spirit of the Excellence in Acting Award through fearless performances, artistic integrity and a commitment to authentic storytelling,” SeriesFest co-founders Randi Kleiner and Kaily Smith said in a joint statement. “From her iconic role in ‘Better Call Saul’ to her incredible work on ‘Cooper’s Bar,’ she continues to champion...

Vanessa Bayer Makes Surprise Appearance on ‘Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney’ as Netflix’s AI Assistant
Image
“Saturday Night Live” alum Vanessa Bayer made a surprise appearance during this week’s episode of “Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney,” playing Netflix’s new AI assistant.

During a break in the interview, which featured Ben Stiller, Quinta Brunson and Nick Kroll, Bayer was introduced in a phony camera test as Netflix’s new AI helper.

“Hello, I’m Jerica, your Netflix AI executive assistant,” Bayer said with a deadpan smile and robotic posture. “It looks like, in the past 10 days, you’ve watched: bad stand-up special, good stand-up special, dog shit special, absolute dog shit special. As well as multiple series where the main character is: a sad girl, a short girl, a horse girl, a dinner girl. We’re thrilled you are enjoying the diversity of our programming!”

Jerica then gave them some suggestions on what to watch next based on the viewer’s “complex viewing habits.

‘Welcome To The Family’ Recap (Episodes 1-8): How Did Cristina Change Raul’s will?
Image
Netflix’s Welcome to the Family is a lighthearted comedy/drama that follows the life of a single mother who got evicted from her own house. Cristina was content with what she had, and she had made peace with her life. She didn’t have a fancy house, but she liked her independence, and she loved the fact that she had her kids by her side. But then, one day, a few goons barged into her home, and that’s when Cristina’s quest to get what she felt she deserved started. So, let’s find out what happened in the Welcome to the Family series and if Cristina was able to get what she wanted.

Spoiler Alert

Why did Raul hate Cristina?

At the beginning of Welcome to the Family, we saw that Cristina, who worked as a nurse, lived with her three kids, Toto, Jana, and Jorge, in her humble abode.

‘Welcome To The Family’ Netflix Review: Mexican Comedy Of Errors Should Be A Comedy Of Nevers
Image
Look, right off the bat, I’m going to say I really don’t enjoy comedy as a genre because it’s super hard to get right, and most people just don’t. What makes a person laugh is completely subjective, and simply making fools of people doesn’t in any way do the trick for me. The Mexican show Welcome To The Family relies solely on this gimmicky kind of comedy. But what’s worse is that it doesn’t even give everybody the gimmicks; it’s only the characters who look slightly different that get pushed into silly shenanigans that are just set up around a baseless idea of what can be found funny. The show tells the story of Cristina, a single mother (as she reminds us every 15 minutes or so), who loses her house to mobsters, thanks to her dad, who is an absolute prick. When...

‘Welcome To The Family’ Ending Explained & Finale Recap: Is Cristina Finally Rich?
Image
Welcome To The Family’s ending is a chaotic mess that looks straight out of an 80s/90s Hollywood comedy. The Mexican Netflix original drama tells the story of a single mother who finds herself in the soup when her house is raided by thugs. All Cristina ever wanted to do was look after her kids and pay off her mortgage, which she did. But, instead of supporting her, not only did her father throw her out, he’s also the reason the thugs stole her house. It’s Cristina’s dad and brother who owe those men money, but the pair plan to keep all the money they have, pull the rug from under Cristina’s feet, and run off to Guam. When Cristina shows up to her father’s house with her family of 3 kids and their paternal uncle (he has lived with them ever since his brother...

Here’s What’s New on Netflix This Week
Image
It’s a new week, and Netflix is dropping some fresh titles on the platform, including John Mulaney’s highly anticipated variety talk show “Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney.”

Between Swenden’s spinoff series of Netflix’s hit dating reality series “Love is Blind” and a hard-hitting documentary centered on the hunt for al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, there’s something for everyone to watch. Many fans are looking forward to Mulaney’s live talk show, which stands to further cement Netflix’s swing at live content as well as the streamer’s relationship with the actor-comedian, who stars in the hit adult animated series “Big Mouth.”

And speaking of Netflix stars, Millie Bobby Brown (“Stranger Things”) stars alongside Chris Pratt in the sci-fi adventure “The Electric State.” The film, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, is loosely based on the 2018 illustrated novel of the same name by Simon Stålenhag.

Netflix adding 8 movies and series this week
Image
Netflix isn't exactly known for sitting back on its laurels as the world's number one streaming service. This week is no exception. There may only be eight new movies and shows this week, but there are definitely some heavy hitters in the mix.

A new documentary series debuts this week, along with new seasons of a pair of reality shows. One of the most popular comedians on Netflix debuts a live talk show this week, a first for the streamer. A Spanish comedy series makes its debut, while a documentary of one of the most beloved icons of the 20th century returns to Netflix this week.

The biggest news is the debut of a chilling new drama series that's already received critical raves. Okay, that was the second-biggest news. The really big news is the premiere of the latest film that combines some of Hollywood's most popular stars with two...
