Thanks to DVD sales, cheap-and-cheerful crime movies have become a force to be reckoned with. How are they staying on top? The genre’s movers and shakers explain
Darren, sales manager at a plastics firm in Milton Keynes, is a force to be reckoned with in the British film industry. In part, he’s the reason why British crime cinema – low-budget, morally dubious and about as disreputable as it’s ever been – is the genre that refuses to die. At least, Darren would if he actually existed. Darren, it turns out, is a theoretical construct; an audience archetype identified by Jezz Vernon, managing director of distribution outfit Metrodome, the people who released recent examples of the form such as The Guvnors, St George’s Day and The Fall of the Essex Boys.
“We always talk about the buyer of a film,” says Vernon. “For someone like Darren, there’s a certain boredom about his existence,...

★★☆☆☆It's unlikely that The Guvnors (2014) is going to be admitted to the canon of gangland crime thrillers in the near future. A middling script, poor direction and a varying array of stereotypical performances all contribute to the gathering inertia of director Gabe Turner's sophomore feature (his first as scribe). The plot is so razor-thin, it can barely sustain the momentum of any action that the film puts forth. Purportedly, a generational battle of East London firms is in the offing, and at the head of each are two men who must confront their own choices head-on and decide whether they will rise or fall by fates of their own making.

★★☆☆☆Looking to marry the football hooligan punch 'em up with Daily Mail-baiting hoodie horror, Gabe Turner's The Guvnors (2014) does at least prove that there's still some vague spark of life in these two staples of low-budget British filmmaking. Whilst it often finds itself - knowingly or unknowingly - conforming to type, there are several commendable flourishes that raise Turner's barrel of cockney monkeys above the Rise of the Foot Soldiers and White Collar Hooligans of this world. If nothing else, it also provides the conclusive answer to that eternal question - who would win in a fight between old school crooner David Essex and Harley Sylvester, one half of Brighton hip hop duo Rizzle Kicks. 'Ave a bang on that.

Up until now, filmmaker Gabe Turner had only made two feature films – both of which were documentaries. His previous endeavour, which he directed alongside his brother Benjamin, was The Class of ’92, an engaging, entertaining and spirited effort, that offered a profound study of British society. His latest feature, The Guvnors, attempts much of the same thing, yet sadly falls short. Unfortunately the only connection this has to The Class of ’92, is that the aforementioned year is around the same time films of this ilk felt relevant and unique.
Doug Allen plays Mitch, a former football hooligan and ‘Guvnor’, now seeking a more peaceful existence with his wife and young son. However he soon finds himself dragged back into his former way of life, when the opportunist gangster Adam (Harley Sylvester) intends on defeating the old guard, and ensuring he’s the most feared criminal in the area. When he attacks...

Renowned, primarily, for being one half of the Rizzle Kicks – singer Harley Sylvester is now trying his hand at acting, taking on the lead role in Gabe Turner’s gangster drama, The Guvnors.
We had the pleasure of sitting down with Sylvester to discuss his move (or return, in some ways) to acting, and how much fun he had playing the leading antagonist of the piece. We also asked if there was anyone in particular he used to help craft this role, and his joy working alongside good friend and now collaborator, Turner.
The Guvnors is released on August 29th.
