One of the best performances of Kristen Stewart's career is coming to Netflix next month. Though her breakout roles came in David Fincher's Panic Room, Zathura: A Space Adventure, and Into the Wild, Stewart has been synonymous with Bella Swan and The Twilight Saga for much of her career, starring in the five franchise films from 2008 to 2012. In those five films, Stewart's performance as Bella was widely panned, which led to her being unfairly labeled as an emotionless actress.
After starring in another big-budget production, 2012's Snow White and the Huntsman, Stewart shifted her focus to indie projects and, just like her Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson, reinvented herself as an actor. During the remainder of the 2010s, Stewart starred in the dramas Camp X-Ray, Still Alice, and Equals, but began garnering critical acclaim for her collaborations with director Olivier Assayas in Clouds of Sils Maria and Personal Shopper.

“I will quit the fucking business.”
Kristen Stewart is jabbing her finger into the couch we’re sharing, speaking with increasing speed and ferocity about what has driven her to this brink. She’s spent five years fruitlessly trying to drum up financing for what she hopes will be her feature directing debut, “The Chronology of Water,” based on the stream-of-consciousness memoir by bisexual author Lidia Yuknavitch. She’s so hacked off about it that she’s about to ruin the furniture.
“I won’t make a-fucking-nother movie until I make this movie,” she declares. Then she sits back and breaks into nervous laughter. “Can’t wait for my agents to read that.”
Stewart has clearly entered the “fuck it” phase of her career.
Don’t worry: She isn’t going anywhere yet. Next week, Stewart is packing her snow boots for her eighth trek to the Sundance Film Festival,...

Kristen Stewart's career has shifted away from big-budget Hollywood blockbusters, resulting in mixed quality movies. Despite this, her 2020 Christmas rom-com "Happiest Season" stands out as one of her best movies since 2014. The film appeals to critics and audiences by offering a mainstream queer narrative that is funny, heartwarming, and showcases Stewart's strengths.
Kristen Stewart’s output since 2014 has endured mixed results, meaning a 2020 Christmas movie remains one of her best over the past decade. Since starring in the Twilight films, Kristen Stewart's career has gradually veered away from big-budget Hollywood blockbusters. The star’s filmography after Breaking Dawn - Part 2 primarily consists of lower-budget fare, and Stewart does not even appear in The Huntsman: Winter’s War, despite having starred in the previous installment. While this apparent preference for modest budgets gives the star more mobility, it hasn’t resulted in consistently high quality movies.

Some major celebrities, like Daniel Radcliffe and Kristen Stewart, choose to also work in smaller indie films despite their success in blockbusters. These actors prioritize their craft and are willing to accept smaller payouts for the opportunity to take on challenging and complex roles. Their versatility and ability to excel in both indie and mainstream films demonstrate their dedication to their craft and their willingness to explore different genres and characters.
The worlds of independent cinema and blockbuster Hollywood productions are often very separate, however, some actors tread the line between the two with incredible ease. Indie films tend to have much smaller budgets as they don't have the same level of backing as large production companies and major studios in Hollywood. As such, the actors and everyone involved in indie productions tend to have a much smaller payout for their work.

Back in 2008, "Twilight" hit the big screen and became a box office sensation. After the vampire romance books by author Stephanie Meyer became the next big young adult sensation alongside the Harry Potter franchise, a film adaptation of what came to be known as "The Twilight Saga" was inevitable. Cast in the lead roles were then-rising stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, and their roles turned them into international superstars, especially after the two started dating in real life. Stewart played the timid Bella, who becomes entranced by a mysterious boy named Edward (Pattinson) after he miraculously saves her life a couple times. As it turns out, Edward is part of a vampire family who has ongoing beef with a clan of werewolves, one of which Bella has also befriends, creating a love triangle that only heightens the ongoing rivalry.

David Gordon Green's "Halloween" trilogy proved to be one of the wildest swings to emerge from our current era of legacy sequels and revivals, sporting questionable lines of dialogue ("Evil dies tonight!") and a narratively suspect yet fascinating finale. In light of this, it's hard not to be intrigued (if also apprehensive) as to what the filmmaker has cooked up with his latest sequel to a landmark work of horror -- "The Exorcist: Believer."
Much like Green and producer Jason Blum's "Halloween" movies, "Believer" hopes to rejuvenate a flailing horror franchise that has gone in some rather bizarre directions since the '70s classic that started it all. The only difference? This time, Green isn't wiping the slate clean by removing the previous installments from the canon, the sequels and prequel (prequels?) alike. "I like all the 'Exorcist' movies," Green told Total Film in May 2022, adding...

Grief is a complicated emotion. People say that what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger, but what if you can go back and change the past? In today’s Aporia trailer, Judy Greer plays a mother devastated by loss who alters time and space to change the course of history. However, manipulating the laws of time is dangerous, and the results could be worse than the event you hoped to change.
In the Aporia trailer, Greer’s Sophie learns about a secret time machine built by her husband’s best friend, played by Payman Maadi. Sophie thinks she can bring her husband back after he dies in a tragic drunk-driving accident, but the consequences of her actions could lead to losing her teenage daughter or worse.
Jared Moshe directs from his own script, with Greer, Edi Gathegi, Payman Maadi, and Faithe Herman starring as the main cast.

Even if their filmography is varied, a lot of actors do the same thing in almost every movie. Sometimes it's something that can be attributed to a character quirk, and sometimes it's an acting choice that fans notice over time, and eventually, it ends up being something that specific actors are known for, and it becomes a hallmark of their films. A recognizable action or trait that they become associated with that might even become something that defines their performances in a way that's memorable and iconic.
It might not be consciously done but eventually, it's something that gets noticed more often than not in an actor's movies. Whether it's Sean Bean always suffering a grisly onscreen death or Brad Pitt always finding something to eat in all of his movies, eagle-eyed fans have noticed that these actors have become defined by very specific characteristics. The 21st-century continuation of "The Exorcist" has found its star: according to Deadline, Ethiopian-born teen actor Lidya Jewett will be taking on the lead role in the first film in what's planned as a potential trilogy by new "Halloween" trilogy director David Gordon Green.
Details about Jewett's character are still under wraps, but it's safe to assume she won't be playing a version of the original 1973 film's possession victim Reagan, as the new installment is reportedly planned as a sequel, not a reboot. Ellen Burstyn is set to return as Chris MacNeil, Reagan's single mom who worked as an actress in the William Friedkin-directed classic. As Green told Collider, the film is "a new journey [with] some familiar characters and some new ones as well."

Now that it has been 21 years since 9/11, more and more films are being made about the aftermath of this tragedy – including the way America responded with torture and heinous decisions in an attempt to punish everyone responsible. Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush is another film that digs into the same kind of story as the one told in The Mauritanian, about one innocent individual who was (illegally) locked up for years in Guantanamo Bay by the US over exaggerated suspicions that were never proven. There have been a growing number of films about Guatananmo and how horrible this place is, between Camp X-Ray, and even Paul Schrader's The Card Counter (which dips into this in an unusual way). Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush premiered at the Berlin Film Festival (where it won two awards) and tells the story of a Turkish man from Germany who was sent to Guantanamo,...

I know Ben Platt predominantly from his major role in the Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen and his comedy role in Pitch Perfect, but he’s a good actor with a bright future at his feet, and small independent drama Broken Diamonds appealed to me. With Platt playing Scott, a twenty-something writer who plans to move to Paris to focus on his writing, he encounters a hurdle in the form of his father passing away and his sister, Cindy, who struggles from mental illness, being temporarily injected into his life on a wider level.
It’s a really well acted film and director Peter Sattler (Camp X-Ray) does a wonderful job at keeping the camera on the emotions of his actors, a fly on the wall to the proceedings. It’s a nicely written movie,...

There’s more plucking acoustic guitar in “Broken Diamonds” than can be heard in your average coffee shop — one of innumerable indie filmmaking clichés employed by “Broken Diamonds,” the story of a wannabe author, his schizophrenic sister and the crossroads they find themselves at when their father dies. Penned by Steve Waverly and directed by Peter Sattler (“Camp X-Ray”) with a dogged attention to cornball conventions, , whose overdone theater-kid turn further dooms the material’s stabs at humor and pathos. Consequently, the prognosis — for both its theatrical (July 23) and VOD (Aug. 23) releases — looks dire.

"Your sister didn't ruin your life, her illness did." FilmRise has unveiled an official trailer for an indie film titled Broken Diamonds, the latest from filmmaker Peter Sattler, his second feature following his debut Camp X-Ray with Kristen Stewart. It just premiered at this year's Santa Barbara Film Festival a few months ago. In the wake of his father's death, a young writer sees his dream of moving to Paris put in jeopardy when he's forced to temporarily take in his wildly unpredictable, mentally ill sister. The film stars Ben Platt and Lola Kirke, with Yvette Nicole Brown, Alphonso McAuley, Lynda Boyd, and Peter Benson. This looks like it has heart and a dash of brutal truth as he tries to figure out what to do with his life. Take a look. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Peter Sattler's Broken Diamonds, direct from YouTube: In the wake of his father's death,...

The United States’ rendition, torture and indefinite confinement of suspected terrorists after 9/11 remain shameful in the nation’s history, but those cases have also proved themselves difficult to dramatize, even in a film with the pedigree of “The Mauritanian.”
Kevin Macdonald (“The Last King of Scotland”) directs Tahar Rahim, Jodie Foster and Benedict Cumberbatch in an adaptation of Mohamedou Ould Slahi’s acclaimed “Guantanamo Diary,” but the results are no more successful than previous films like “Rendition” and “Camp X-Ray” in turning this real-life horror into satisfying drama. (That sinking feeling that audiences might get at seeing the words “based on a true story” open a film is completely merited here.)
Whether it’s because these wounds are too recent and can’t be examined with historical perspective yet, or because the abuses heaped upon Guantanamo inmates are so unquestionably barbaric that there’s nothing that a narrative film can conclude about the process besides,...

Haven’t the faintest why Peter Sattler‘s sophomore feature Broken Diamonds (formerly Love & Oatmeal) has been held off the scorecard as production was complete in the summer of 2018. Ben Platt, Lola Kirke and Yvette Nicole Brown star in Sattler’s follow up to his directorial debut in Camp X-Ray – a Sundance Film Fest selection in 2014. Steve Waverly wrote the screenplay.

Party people unite, because it's Kristen Stewart's birthday! The Los Angeles native turns 29 years old today and fans of her have really watched her grow right in front of their eyes thanks to all of the movies she's been in so far in her career. “Community’s” Yvette Nicole Brown and “The Middle’s” Alphonso McAuley have joined Ben Platt in Black Label Media’s “Love & Oatmeal.”
“Camp X-Ray” director Peter Sattler is helming the project, with Steve Waverly penning the script. Black Label Media’s Molly Smith, Rachel Smith, Thad Luckinbill, and Trent Luckinbill are producing, along with Trina Wyatt. Blm’s Jon Schumacher will executive produce.
The story centers on Scott, a 20-something aspiring writer who, in the wake of his father’s sudden death, sees his dream of moving to Paris put in jeopardy when he is forced to temporarily take in his wildly unpredictable, mentally ill sister. They are eyeing a start of production early summer.
Brown is best known for her starring role as the opinionated but sweet Shirley Bennett on NBC’s “Community.” She recently appeared on ABC’s “The Mayor” and currently has a recurring role on “Mom.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Culturally clueless cinematic vomit, a cynical undertaking embracing the most diminishing clichés it can apply to its characters. Low stakes, and low humor. I’m “biast” (pro): big fan of Dwayne Johnson, occasion fan of Jack Black
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
More than 20 years after 1995’s Jumanji — the family adventure film about a couple of kids who get sucked into an ancient board game and have to play it to completion to escape — the sequel has arrived… and this time, it’s all about hapless teens who get sucked into a videogame and have to play it to completion to escape. Was anyone demanding a second go at Jumanji? Zathura, the 2005 “spiritual sequel” — which, to be fair, does sound more like marketing baloney than anything else — was a flop. And, to be “fair” to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,...

Kristen Stewart might be the most adventurous young actress working today. Instead of playing variations on the Twilight role that made her a star, she keeps pushing ahead into new territory (Camp X-Ray, Still Alice, Certain Women), the riskier the better. Nothing scares her. She hit a recent career peak playing the personal assistant to a demanding Juliette Binoche in Clouds of Sils Maria. And in Personal Shopper, she reteams with French director Olivier Assayas, to again investigate living in the shadow of another person.
