Teyana Taylor Confirms Role As Dionne Warwick In Upcoming Biopic
Image
Teyana Taylor is stepping into the shoes of Dionne Warwick for a biopic.

The “Gonna Love Me” singer recently confirmed that she’s taking the role of the hit-making icon to Tamron Hall in an interview shared with Billboard.

“We’re already working on it,” Taylor said regarding the biopic. “We’re in the building process right now. I always wanted to make sure I could lock in with any person that I would be playing.”

Taylor detailed that she’s drawing inspiration from other famous Hollywood depictions, including Angela Bassett’s role as Tina Turner in 1993’s “What’s Love Got to Do With It” and Jamie Foxx’s portrayal of Ray Charles in 2004’s “Ray”.

Every Kill In Zombieland
Image
Zombieland is a horror-comedy that is laugh-out-loud funny while packing in plenty of gnarly kills of both zombies and humans. The movie follows a young man nicknamed "Columbus" (Jesse Eisenberg) who has managed to survive a worldwide zombie apocalypse by following a set of rules that are meta comments on the undead genre. Columbus teams up with “Tallahassee” (Woody Harrelson) who is another successful survivor. The two are ostensibly on respective journeys to find living family members, but it becomes clear that they are more or less happy to just enjoy lives without responsibilities.

Eventually, the wandering pair run into the sister team of "Wichita" (Emma Stone) and "Little Rock" (Abigail Breslin) — the characters are all named after cities to avoid getting too emotionally attached. As the quartet grows closer, Columbus ends up breaking his Zombieland survival rules to protect them. The movie is hilarious and wacky, but that doesn...

‘Shazam 3’ Theories & Expectations: What Are The Possible Routes To Be Taken For The Next Film?
Image
The soon to be revamped DC Extended Universe’s twelfth entry, “Shazam! Fury of the Gods”, the much-awaited sequel of the first silver screen adaptation of the origin of World’s Mightiest Mortal “Shazam”, has hit the screens worldwide. As fans already know, the disjointed condition of DC’s cinematic universe has been the cause of headache for fans and the creators alike, despite that, “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” takes few chances to tease the possibility of interconnected storytelling while recognizing the hindrances. There are two post-credits scenes which provide us crucial hints both for the larger DC universe and the expansion-related character-oriented lore of Shazam, respectively. We would like to connect the dots by forming a connection with the existing DC universe and also exploring some possible plot points from comics to determine what readers can expect from the third Shazam movie.

Michelle Yeoh Reflects On Her Win & The Long Fight For Inclusivity: “Finally After 40 Years” – Oscars Backstage
Image
When Best Actress winner Michelle Yeoh came backstage to the Oscars press room following the show, she was filled with zeal for the way she and Everything Everywhere All at Once have moved the inclusivity needle.

“This is actually an historical moment so I really have to thank the Academy for acknowledging and embracing diversity and true representation,” she said. “This is something we have been working so hard towards, for a very long time…I’m still here today. Finally after 40 years I get this,” she went on, holding up her Oscar. “It just goes to show we will win. That’s what we’re doing. Don’t give up, because once you give up that’s a loss. Don’t let anybody put you in a box, don’t let anybody say you are past your prime.”

Oscars 2023: Who will win, should win, and who should have got a look in
Image
This late into awards season, we typically tend to know which movies and performances will triumph on Oscars night. But this year has been a bit more erratic than usual. The usual precursors – the Baftas, the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards – have been unusually diverse when it comes to winners, with voters choosing to spread around the wealth rather than focus on the same collection of faces each time. It means this weekend’s Oscars might actually be exciting to watch. It also means difficulty in predicting what will happen on the night.

This is partly down to an unusually strong line-up of nominees this year, from populist hits such as Avatar and Elvis to critical darlings such as Tár and The Banshees of Inisherin. Then there are the movies that were both bona fide phenomenons that made a lot of money and drew raves, like the...

Shazam 2's Wonder Woman Cameo Is Worse Than First Movie's Superman Scene
Image
Shazam! Fury of the Gods will create a tradition for the franchise, continuing the first movie's DC hero cameo, this time swapping Superman for Wonder Woman, but the way the sequel will address Diana's appearance might make it worse than the original Shazam movie's headless Superman scene. Shazam! Fury of the Gods can make or break the character's future in the new DC Universe. DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn has said that Shazam inhabits a relatively separate corner of the DC Universe, making it easier for Zachary Levi to continue in the role than it was for former Superman Henry Cavill.

While it is possible that the new Shazam movie could become Dcu canon, Shazam! Fury of the Gods is set to repeat the original movie's choice of including a cameo from another hero belonging to the wider DC Universe, which, allied to the poor box office projection for the sequel,...

Celebrations With Blanchett, Bono, Baz And More; The Best Books On Oscar; Farewell To An Industry Giant & Academy Award Record Holder – Notes On The Season
Image
A column chronicling conversations and events on the awards circuit.

The votes are in. The ballots are being counted. The clock is ticking toward Oscar Sunday (which also is the day the clock ticks ahead as daylight-saving time begins). This also means the party circuit is in full bloom, and if you wondered if anyone was still worried about Covid, as has been the case for the past two Oscar seasons due to the pandemic, well, think again. As evidence, the two celebrations I hit on Thursday night — one for the Australian Oscar nominees, the other for Irish nominees – were packed to the max, barely a mask in sight. And if anyone was worried, it seems they have decided to party hearty instead, at least until the hangover following this six-month awards season finally takes hold Monday morning.

Written and drawn by Ngozi Ukazu, Barda is an upcoming graphic novel for young adult readers that puts the iconic warrior into the spotlight for a story that seeks to reexamine the past of the Fourth World's notorious warrior. Set during her years serving under Darkseid and Granny Goodness, Big Barda is finding herself curious about the idea of love, even on the harsh world of Apokolips. Ukazu explains how this origin story will add welcome layers to the heroine, and her path from soldier to hero:

"Barda is a story of a very tough soldier who slowly realizes that her loyalties are more complicated than it seems. Barda is a great character because she is so complicated.

Film Review: Cold as Marble (2022) by Asif Rustamov
Image
Azerbaijani drama “Cold as Marble” was one of the big winners of Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. For “his powerful and nuanced performance as the mean and manipulative father”, Gurban Ismailov received the Best Actor award, and this is probably one of the most relatable prizes handed out at the night of the closing ceremony in Tallinn.

“Cold as Marble” is screening at Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinema

Ismailov gives “Cold as a Marble” the necessary weight when he appears on screen almost halfway into the film. Playing a rough, emotionless man who has just returned home from prison, he becomes the centerpiece of the narrative and its solid rock. His role is dark but not without a pinch of humor, and there is a heavy polarity between his passive-aggressive behaviour and the likeability of his witty remarks. The first encounter with the old man is shockingly natural,...

Ariana DeBose Addresses Viral BAFTAs Rap: “The Internet Is Wild”
Image
Ariana DeBose is doing the thing and sharing her thoughts about the reaction to her much-debated viral rap from the recent 2023 BAFTA Awards ceremony.

The Oscar winner took to Instagram on Saturday to post a carousel of images and footage related to her musical performance while recently hosting the BAFTAs. During Sunday’s awards ceremony, DeBose rapped about a number of the nominees and used the line “Angela Bassett did the thing,” leading to widespread social media commentary.

“The internet is wild y’all!” DeBose wrote in her post. “Appreciate all the love.”

Her carousel included footage from the stage of Lizzo’s Thursday concert in Amsterdam, during which the music star told her audience to “shake it off” before twice reciting the now-infamous line about Bassett and seeming to mimic DeBose’s body movement from the awards show.

DeBose’s post also included a tweet from Halle Berry that used the Bassett line,...

WGA East Files Third Unfair Labor Practices Charge Against Hearst Magazines Media
Image
After two years of collective bargaining, the WGA East has filed another unfair labor practices charge against Hearst Magazines Media – this time for giving employees a raise while in contract negotiations with the guild. The guild, which says that this violates federal labor law, represents some 500 of the publishing giant’s editorial, video, design and photo staff at more than 25 brands, including Esquire, Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazaar, Town & Country, Good Housekeeping, Popular Mechanics, Car & Driver, Oprah Daily, Seventeen, Elle, Redbook and Woman’s Day.

The complaint, filed today with the National Labor Relations Board, claims that “Within the last six months, the employer unilaterally implemented a wage increase for bargaining unit employees while it is in negotiations for a collective bargaining agreement with the charging party.”

This is the third unfair labor practices charge the guild has filed against the company for allegedly acting unlawfully during bargaining. In this latest case,...

Where Was The Woman King Filmed? All Locations Explained
Image
While The Woman King might occur in what is today known as the Republic of Benin in West Africa, the historical epic starring Viola Davis and John Boyega wasn't filmed there. To replicate the picturesque landscape depicted by 19th-century accounts of the Kingdom of Dahomey, director Gina Prince-Blythewood and cinematographer Polly Morgan had to find locations that made the perfect backdrop to the story of King Ghezo and his Agojie. This all-women warrior cohort protected him. Davis's General Nanisca needed to lead her powerful army across burnt orange earth, through ocean-like fields, and stalk the corridors of buildings that authentically represented the period's regal architecture.

The Woman King was filmed over five months, with the crew working six days a week until 65 percent tested positive for the Omicron variant, and production shut down for two months (via The Hollywood Reporter). To tell The Woman King's true story, West Africa would...

Chelsea Handler Rips Tucker Carlson, Ben Shapiro After They Mocked Her for Having No Kids: ‘Who Needs Birth Control When Your Voice Is 100 Effective?’
Image
Chelsea Handler eviscerated Tucker Carlson and Ben Shapiro on social media after they mocked her for being a “childless woman.” The beef among the TV personalities started on Valentine’s Day when Handler posted a playful comedy video about the “day in the life of a childless woman.” Carlson was apparently so triggered by the video that he referred to Handler on his show as an “aging, deeply unlikeable woman who never had kids.”

Carlson’s guest, the right wing radio host Jesse Kelly, took things even further by going on a misogynistic rant against Handler. Kelly said Handler’s “womb resembles a dried-up tumbleweed blowing down an old western town,” adding her “Valentine’s date for the 10th year in a row is a 10-year-old copy of ‘Magic Mike’ and a half-full bottle of Xanax, and you’re trying to pretend like you’re happy, but you’re not happy.

The selection process for the Grammy Awards was altered last May, following very public criticisms from The Weeknd. See the complete list of this year’s winners below:

Record of the Year

“Don’t Shut Me Down” — Abba

The 2023 Grammy nominee pool was stacked with heavy-hitting artists. On Nov. 15, the Recording Academy revealed the 2023 nominations across all 91 categories, some of which were presented by past Grammy winners like Olivia Rodrigo, John Legend, and Machine Gun Kelly.

Armie Hammer Breaks Silence In First Interview Since Cannibalism Scandal, Alleges Child Sexual Abuse, Suicide Attempt
Image
In early 2021, actor Armie Hammer’s Hollywood career came to a screeching halt after disturbing text messages emerged detailing Bdsm and cannibalism, followed by several accusations of sexual misconduct and, in the case of one woman, rape.

Two years later, Hammer is breaking his silence in the first interview since the scandal that’s cost him his career and his marriage, revealing he was a victim of child sexual abuse and that he was so distraught that he considered suicide.

Speaking with Air Mail, Hammer claimed that his interest in Bdsm stems from that childhood trauma, when he was sexually molested by a youth pastor when he was 13.

Grammys Record of the Year predictions: Adele could tie Bruno Mars and Paul Simon’s record
Image
Unlike the songwriter-focused Grammy for Song of the Year, Record of the Year aims to award the performance and recorded aspects of a song, like the mixing, mastering, and producing. But while the award doesn’t go to the songwriters, the chances of winning one award are very high when you win the other. This year a select group of 10 year-defining hits from multiple genres are battling it out in what could be a race of familiar favorites versus fresh successes. Let’s take a look.

This award definitely has its clear favorites. The biggest hit of the year is always a factor here, so it’s safe to say one of the front-runners is Harry Styles’s “As It Was.” The track is right up the Grammys’ alley, being a pop-rock jam that will appeal to most sectors of the Recording Academy. Styles is also not unknown to voters,...

Hilary Swank Returns to Sci-Fi in I Am Mother
Don Kaye Jun 10, 2019

The Oscar-winning actress plays a mysterious character in Netflix’s new post-apocalyptic thriller.

The last time that Hilary Swank starred in a science fiction movie was 2003, when she played one of a team of scientists who drill deep into the Earth’s crust to save the planet in the rather out-to-lunch The Core. She’s back underground in I Am Mother, a decidedly more serious story in which she plays a mysterious character known only as Woman. Swank’s enigmatic interloper comes between a young girl named Daughter (Clara Rugaard) and an AI called Mother (voiced by Rose Byrne) when the girl lets Woman into the bunker in which she has been raised by Mother from an embryo.

The bunker, it turns out, is a repository for thousands of such embryos, stored there to restart the human race in the wake of an unknown global catastrophe. But...
