Bafta has unveiled the round two voting longlists for its 2024 film awards, with Emilia Perez leading the way with 15 spots followed by Conclave with 14.

Eighty films have been longlisted across 25 categories, including the new children’s and family film award – the first new category at the Bafta film awards for five years.

London-based international documentary sales and production outfit Dogwoof has secured further international sales for Shiori Ito’s “Black Box Diaries,” which was Oscar-shortlisted last week for documentary feature.

The film premiered in competition at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and has since been an audience and critical favorite at international festivals worldwide, picking up several awards on its journey.

Dogwoof has secured further sales in territories including BBC Storyville (U.K.), Zdf/Arte (Germany and France), Sky Digi Ent. (Taiwan), Star Alliance (China), Anticipate (Singapore and Thailand), Falcon Pictures (Indonesia), Discovery (former Yugoslavia), and Mbc (Middle East and North Africa).

Previously announced sales include Art House Films (France), Trigon (Switzerland), Periscoop (Benelux), NonStop (Scandinavia and Baltics), Anticipate Pictures (Singapore), Filmin (Spain), Sherry Media (Canada) and Edko (Hong Kong).

Exclusive: Black Box Diaries, the award-winning documentary that just made the Oscar shortlist, will debut on Paramount+ with Showtime in the U.S. next month.

Shiori Itō’s film, winner of the Human Rights Award at Cph:dox and three awards at the Zurich Film Festival among many other honors, will bow on the streaming platform January 7. Oscar nomination voting begins the next day – Wednesday, Jan. 8.

“Black Box Diaries follows director Ito’s courageous investigation of her own sexual assault in an improbable attempt to prosecute her high-profile offender,” notes a release. “Unfolding like a thriller and combining secret investigative recordings, vérité shooting and emotional first-person video, her quest becomes a landmark case in Japan, exposing the country’s desperately outdated judicial and societal systems.”

Sugarcane earned a leading five nominations as the IDA Documentary Awards announced its nominees today, followed closely by Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat with four.

Black Box Diaries, My Sweet Land, and Queendom earned three nominations apiece. Also earning multiple nominations were Agent of Happiness, No Other Land, Seeking Mavis Beacon, and The Remarkable Life of Ibelin – each with two nominations.

Sugarcane’s nods came for Best Documentary Feature and Best Director, recognizing the work of Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie, as well as nominations for cinematography, editing, and score. The new Nier Automata anime began its first episode with some awesome action scenes, but it was a puppet segment at the end of the episode that surprised the most by promising to bring the game's alternate endings to life, too.

For anime series, particularly those which can get a little heavy at times, it's not uncommon to see a small, jokey segment attached to the end of the episode. These are often based on omake from the manga, but can also draw inspiration from character data sheets, or just explain concepts of the world in a fun way. They often use a different art style from the main series, usually a cutesy chibi style, and are animated very simplistically, if at all. Emancipation boasts an exemplary cast who bring the characters to life in a harrowing story. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, Emancipation marks Will Smith’s return to film following the controversy surrounding his highly publicized Oscars slap. Emancipation is based on a true story of an enslaved man who escaped to freedom and joined the Union army in 1863.

Emancipation was first announced in June 2020, and began filming a year later in 2021. The film was stuck for a while, with a proposed postponement potentially in the cards because of the controversy surrounding Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards. However, Emancipation’s release date was ultimately not affected very much, debuting in limited theaters December 2 before streaming on Apple TV+ December 9.

A trailer combining the dread of each showing has now been released to give us some idea of what’s in store for us and quite frankly, it looks great.

Exclusive: Rome and Generation Kill executive producer Anne Thomopoulos is reuniting with her former HBO boss Chris Albrecht at Legendary Global.

Thomopoulos has joined the joint venture between Legendary and Albrecht as a partner, and comes from CAA’s Global Television department. She has been tasked with focusing on identifying and acquiring international content that Legendary Global can develop, produce and finance for local and global platforms.

Thomopoulos and Albrecht are reuniting after a successful run together at HBO, where Albrecht served as chairman and CEO and Thomopoulos created and oversaw the network’s dramatic series department. Kicking off with Oz, she first established HBO’s miniseries division with projects including From the Earth to the Moon, Band of Brothers and The Corner, before going on to exec produce Rome and Generation Kill.

She subsequently served as exec producer on Camelot for Starz, where she had a first-look producing deal.

Former TNT/TBS and Gemstone Studios exec Kathryn Busby has been named executive vice president of TriStar Television, a division of Sony Pictures Television.

For the last nine months of her 14-year Sony tenure, Minghella had a dual role as President of TriStar Pictures and TriStar Television, adding TriStar TV duties in January 2019.

ABC has given a put pilot commitment, Homicide Special, a crime drama from The Resident co-creator/executive producer Amy Holden Jones and the series’ co-executive producer Andrew Chapman. The project hails from 20th Century Fox TV, the studio behind The Resident.

Written by Holden Jones and Chapman, Homicide Special is set inside the Homicide Special division of the Philadelphia Pd. It follows two young and recently promoted female detectives and a beat cop as they take on an entrenched and corrupt system at an inner city precinct.

Holden Jones and Chapman executive produce alongside The Resident exec producer Oly Obst of 3 Arts for 20th TV, a division of Disney TV Studios.

Exclusive: French distribution and production force StudioCanal is launching sales in Cannes on $20M-budgeted, English-language animated film Around The World, and flight-themed thriller Black Box, starring Pierre Niney (Yves Saint Laurent) and Marine Vacth (Young And Beautiful).

Despicable Me outfit Mac Guff is handling the animation on the former, an update of the Jules Verne classic Around The World in Eighty Days, this time featuring a marmoset and a con man frog who set off to achieve a record-breaking journey. The Cottonwood Media-produced project, which is one of the biggest new animated projects at this year’s Cannes market, already has positive feedback from buyers, I understand.

Script comes from Ice Age: The Meltdown scribe Gerry Swallow. Samuel Tourneux, Oscar-nominated for his 2008 short Even Pigeons Go to Heaven, is making his feature debut on the project, which is in pre-production.

The Resident co-creator Amy Holden Jones is expanding her relationship with 20th Century Fox TV, signing a new overall deal with the studio behind the medical drama series.

“Amy delivered one of the most compelling procedurals on television in The Resident, and she is not done by any stretch, said Jonnie Davis, President of Creative Affairs, 20th Century Fox TV . She’s brimming with ideas, and we’re excited to have her continued services on our series as well as her development. She’s an important voice.”

Holden Jones will continue her work on The Resident, which was recently renewed for a third season. The Resident, from Holden Jones and Todd Harthan, ranks among the season’s Top 20 broadcast dramas among Young Adults and Teens and is Fox’s second most watched drama series behind 9-1-1.

“The Resident” co-creator Amy Holden Jones has signed a new overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV, just five days before the medical drama’s season 2 finale.

Overall deals have been coming thick and fast at the TV studio since it was acquired by Disney a little over a month ago, with more apparently in the pipeline. Holden Jones’ deal is the eighth such agreement announced in the last few weeks. The other creatives who have recently signed with Twentieth Television are Liz Meriwether, Drew Goddard, Jason Winer, Octavia Spencer, Nora Smith, Jake Kasdan & Melvin Mar, and Marlene King.

“Peter Rice, Dana, Jonnie, Howard and everyone at the studio have provided me with invaluable support, combined with that rarest prize, creative freedom. I’m deeply grateful to them and to the entire team at 20th, and incredibly excited to start this new journey together,” said Holden Jones.

The theme of this year’s MipTV conference is pushing boundaries, something that keynote speaker and television executive producer Ilene Chaiken has been known for throughout her career, working toward inclusion both before and behind the camera.

Chaiken is the creator of “The L Word,” the groundbreaking drama that followed the lives of lesbian women living in California that ran on Showtime from 2004-’09. But she also executive produced and served as showrunner on the first four seasons of “Empire,” Lee Daniels’ musical family drama about an affluent African-American family in the music business, and served as executive producer on ABC’s “Black Box,” about a neuroscientist living with bipolar disorder, as well as Hulu’s dystopian drama “The Handmaid’s Tale,” centering on a regime where women have no rights.

U.S. writer, showrunner and producer Ilene Chaiken, best known for “The L Word,” “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Empire,” will be among the recipients of the Médailles d’Honneur, a career achievement award bestowed by Cannes-based TV conference and market MipTV.

The honor, handed to TV executives who have “through their talent, leadership and passion made a significant contribution to the world of television and the development of the international TV community,” will also go to Stéphane Courbit, chairman of France’s Banijay Group, Mosunmola “Mo” Abudu, CEO of Nigeria’s EbonyLife Media, and Jane Millichip, managing director of the U.K.’s Sky Vision.

The four will receive their awards at a cocktail and awards ceremony taking place at Cannes’ InterContinental Carlton Hotel on April 8.

Exclusive: Rocker Melissa Etheridge will provide the musical ingredients for a stage adaptation of Mystic Pizza, the 1988 MGM rom-com that launched Julia Roberts and gave an early look at a very young, lobster-eating Matt Damon. The new production, announced today by Lively McCabe Entertainment, will be directed by Gordon Greenberg, who is co-writing the book with Sas Goldberg based on the story and characters by original screenwriter Amy Holden Jones.

“MGM’s Mystic Pizza is a seminal film for an entire generation of young people looking to distinguish themselves in a rapidly changing world,” said Greenberg. “Adapting Amy Holden Jones’ original screenplay for the stage with rock icon Melissa Etheridge, a beacon of strength and raw musical energy, and the brilliantly hilarious Sas Goldberg, is a dream collaboration on a story that is as relevant today as it was when we all first experienced it.”

Natalie Portman is remembering her good friend and Israeli author Amos Oz.

Oz died of cancer on Friday at the age of 79, according to NPR. The literary giant inspired Portman, 37, with his 2002 autobiographical novel A Tale of Love and Darkness, which she made into a film in 2015.

The Oscar-winner shared her condolences on Instagram Friday writing, “My heart is broken.”

“Today we lost a soul, a mind, a heart, Amos Oz, who brought so much beauty, so much love, and a vision of peace to our lives,” Portman wrote in the caption. “Please hold him in your hearts and read his gorgeous books.

Amos Oz, lauded Israeli author whose works included critically praised memoir A Tale and Love and Darkness which was made into the 2015 feature film, and an outspoken advocate for peace with the Palestinians, died of cancer Friday. His daughter, Fania Oz-Salzberger, confirmed her father’s death on Twitter. He was 79. “To those who loved him, thank you,” Oz-Salzberger wrote, adding he had died “after a speedy deterioration, in his sleep.”

Among his most acclaimed works are his 2002 memoir A Tale of Love and Darkness, which was adapted for the screen and directed by Natalie Portman, who also starred in the film. “It was a tale of love and light, and now, a great darkness,” Israeli President Reuven Rivlin said in a statement eulogizing Oz. “Rest in peace, dear Amos. You gave us great pleasure.”

Jason Taylor has joined Futurism Studios as the new president of production, where he’ll spearhead the Brooklyn studio’s expansion into scripted content.

Taylor will work to build a television and theatrical film slate that takes advantage of Futurism’s online audience and its interest in coverage of technology and scientific discoveries. Initially, he’ll focus on the science fiction genre.

Based in Los Angeles to give Futurism a West Coast presence, Taylor also travel to the studio’s current headquarters in Brooklyn, New York.

Taylor joins Futurism Studios from Bryan Singer’s Bad Hat Harry Productions, where he was president of production. He worked as co-producer on many of Singer’s films, including X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse. He has also produced several independent projects; most notably the award-winning British thriller UWantMe2KillHim? and the Netflix horror/mystery The Taking of Deborah Logan.

Actress-comedian Ali Wong is set to star opposite Tiffany Haddish in Tuca & Bertie, Netflix’s upcoming 10-episode animated comedy series produced by Michael Eisner’s The Tornante Company.

Created by Lisa Hanawalt (BoJack Horseman), the animated comedy is about the friendship between two 30-year-old bird women who live in the same apartment building: Tuca (Haddish), a cocky, care-free toucan, and Bertie (Wong), an anxious, daydreaming songbird.

Haddish, Wong and Hanawalt executive produce Tuca & Bertie alongside Raphael Bob-Waksberg (BoJack Horseman), Noel Bright, and Steven A. Cohen. Animation is being done at Shadowmachine.
