Last Shift

This Haunting 11-Year-Old Horror Mystery Is Perfect for Longlegs Fans
Image
Quick Links The Entire Movie Takes Place at a Police Station Last Shift Depicts Occult Horror Similar to Longlegs The Movie Plays Tricks On the Mind the Whole Time Last Shift's Cryptic Ending Is Worth the Wait

The horror genre has been experiencing a massive change for the last decade. The masterful art of terrifying the viewers has categorically evolved, transitioning out of trope-filled storytelling and approach. Instead of blatantly depending upon supernatural elements, most horror movies have shifted to a slow and steady buildup supported by a strong foundation of good writing and direction. Recent hits like Longlegs, When Evil Lurks, Oddity, and more have awakened the audience's excitement for psychological horrors, which are proficiently well-balanced with adequate jumpscares and ominous presences.

Having said that, if fans have particularly enjoyed the brilliant amalgamation of crime drama and horror like Longlegs, there's an 11-year-old underrated title that will also invoke similar emotions.

15 Great Horror Movies That Were Never Released In Theaters
Image
While it can be a special experience to witness a truly terrifying horror movie in theaters, there were several fantastic scary movies that never made it to the big screen. While the advent of the internet means many horror movies come straight to streaming, there were also plenty of excellent straight-to-dvd or even straight-to-vhs horror movies from years gone by. These often low-budget releases didnt have to pander to box office expectations and, in some cases, were able to be more ambitious and unique as a result.

Some of the best non-theatrically released movies were in the horror genre, as incredible horror movies were often produced with very little funding or support from major studios. In some cases, direct-to-video sequels even outdid their theatrical predecessors and gained cult followings among horror fans in the years since their release. These incredible non-theatrical horror movies proved that filmmakers dont need to get...

This Psychological Horror Remake Doesn't Come Close to the Petrifying Original
Image
It's always amazing when a filmmaker gets to revisit the stories they never fully got to tell. Whether it be budgetary restraints or producers' influence, it's great when a director returns to the movies they created years ago, getting the chance to flesh them out in ways they couldn't before and, hopefully, granting them the cathartic climaxes they deserved. That seemed to be the intent of horror director Anthony Diblasi on his movie, 2023's Malum; focusing on a rookie cop facing off with demonic cult members, this story is an almost direct remake of the director's earlier, widely acclaimed movie, 2014's Last Shift.

This Psychological Horror Movie Spends Its Entire Runtime Messing With You
Image
The best horror movies are the ones that make their watchers look over their shoulders. The ones whose scares echo through the TV, bringing viewers into the minds of those fighting for their lives onscreen. It takes a truly exceptional film to get its viewers to resonate with the terrifying plight of its main characters something that Last Shift does perfectly. Directed by Anthony Diblasi and streaming on Tubi, the film focuses on a rookie cop stuck as the lone patrol in a decrepit police station whose insidious past terrorizes our protagonist during her first assignment. Supernatural menaces in strange locations aren't abnormal in horror, but it's how the film messes with not only the main character but the audience themselves that makes it a genuinely haunting experience.

Malum Review: A Nightmare Reworking of Familiar Fears
Image
Anthony Diblasi’s 2023 film Malum tells a harrowing tale that unfolds over rookie police officer Jessica Loren’s first night shift alone at a soon-to-be closed-down police station. Nine years after his chilling film Last Shift covered similar ground, Diblasi revisits the story with this remake. Malum thrusts Jessica into a nightmare as strange happenings and unexplainable visions plague her shift.

On the one-year anniversary of her father’s tragic death, Jessica volunteers for the final shift at the old Lanford police station, hoping to find answers. As her night progresses, Jessica’s reality begins to blur. Terrifying phone calls and uninvited intruders disrupt her shift, while flashbacks reveal new information about her father and his fateful encounter with the sinister cult known as The Flock of the Low God. Strange sights and unearthly presences haunt the empty hallways, but is there a rational explanation or has an unseen evil...

Malum review | A gorily effective horror remake
Image
A young rookie cop faces the worst shift of her life in an abandoned police station. Here’s our review of the indie horror, Malum, in cinemas now.

Most of us have done nightmarish shifts at work. Regardless of your industry, no one is immune to a bad day. Maybe a customer yelled at you, you had to clean up a mess of something yucky, or perhaps everything that could go wrong, just went wrong.

Still: I doubt any of us have experienced quite as bad a shift as Jessica Loren does in Anthony Diblasi’s Malum.

Malum is in fact a remake, or more of a reimagining, of Diblasi’s 2015 film Last Shift. Remaking your own film less than 10 years after it was released might seem silly, but Malum manages to successfully squeeze more out of Last Shift’s deceivingly simple premise.

The basic idea and plot are the same in both films.

‘Malum’ Review
Image
Stars: Eric Olson, Jessica Sula, Candice Coke, Kevin Wayne, Natalie Victoria, Chaney Morrow | Written by Anthony Diblasi, Scott Poiley | Directed by Anthony Diblasi

Malum is, according to its press release “a bold and expanded reimagining of the 2014 horror cult classic, Last Shift”. Now some may simply take that as a fancy way of saying it’s a remake of a film that’s less than ten years old. But there’s a difference between this and your average remake, it’s the work of the original director Anthony Diblasi and his co-writer Scott Poiley.

I considered revisiting Last Shift before watching Malum because while I remembered the basic plot and that I really liked the first hour then being let down by the final act, I didn’t recall a lot of the details. But, in part due to how knowing what to expect spoiled the impact of another recent reimagining,...

Craig Fairbrass in Villain (2020)
Malum/Hunt Her, Kill Her review – double bill of low-budget, single-location horror
Craig Fairbrass in Villain (2020)
Welcome Villain Films presents two fright-fests, but tired tricks, bad acting and some head-banging repetition leads to hackneyed hokum

New horror-focused studio Welcome Villain are aiming to be the next Blumhouse, but judging by this double bill of early releases it could be a long road. Both aim to maximise low-budget returns by restricting themselves to a single location – an approach that worked very well recently for filling station ordeal Night of the Hunted, not to mention of course the apex of horror, The Shining. But in truth neither of these makes strong use of its chosen locale, and both are tired, borderline exhausted deployments of the audience-prodding, jump-scare bag of tricks.

Malum (★★☆☆☆), by director Anthony Diblasi, at least gives its backstory a bit of welly. A reworking of his 2014 film Last Shift, it sees rookie police officer Jessica (Jessica Sula) choose to work a solo shift at the old...

The 10 Best Horror Movies Released in the First Half of 2023
Image
Where does the time go? We’re now halfway through 2023, so you know the drill. It’s time to reflect on the year so far with a look at the best horror movies released in 2023… so far.

This summer’s only getting warmed up for horror releases, and the Halloween season ensures a packed Fall to come. So far, though, 2023 offers no shortage of horror gems that run the gamut from highly anticipated sequels to genre-benders and viral sensations.

As a refresher and to ensure great movies don’t fall through the cracks, here are the ten best horror movies released in the first half of 2023…

Huesera: The Bone Woman

When so many pregnancy horror movies isolate the mother-to-be, breeding mistrust from everyone around her, Huesera internalizes it. Refreshingly, it’s less about motherhood and more about the loss of self. Director Michelle Garza Cervera, who co-wrote with Abia Castillo,...

‘Malum’ (2023) Ending, Explained: Does Jessica Loren Survive?
Image
The occult/supernatural horror sub-genres has been going around for a while, with some international gems going seemingly unnoticed because of a lack of mainstream coverage. The Turkish Dabbe 4 and the Taiwanese Incantation are some of the scariest occult horror pieces that you could try out if you’re truly feeling adventurous. If you’d rather prefer some good ol’ American occult instead where young women are sacrificed to some pre-Biblical King of Hell, then Anthony Diblasi’s remake of his 2014 horror Last Shift is right up your alley. The 2023 supernatural horror Malum follows more-or-less the same plot as its predecessor, with slight tweaks here and there and a greater emphasis on the gore. The story follows Jessica, daughter of cop Will Loren, who returns to the soon-to-be-decommissioned police station where something diabolical happened one year ago. With a few changes to the approach and the way 2023’s Jessica is...

10 Low Budget Horror Movies That Deserve Remakes
Image
While movie remakes are popular across genres (Anyone remember the 2018 remake of Garry Marshall's "Overboard"?), the horror genre is especially susceptible. The genre is unique insofar as its scares endure more than most. Where comedies and action movies, for instance, are inextricably linked to their time of release, a scary movie is a scary movie. With a fresh coat of paint, what was new three decades ago can seem fresh again.

A curious contemporary trend has emerged in which relatively recent titles are remade just a few years after their original releases. Released just 14 years after the first "Cabin Fever," the remake used the exact script as the original. Recently, horror filmmaker Anthony Diblasi released "Malum" in select theaters. "Malum," a remake of Diblasi's 2014 indie "Last Shift," isn't quite a shot-for-shot remake so much as it is a reimagining. With more money and more experience, Diblasi revisits his demonic fable in a new context.

‘Malum’ and ‘Last Shift’: Companion Films Forged in the Fires of Hell
Image
The following contains major spoilers for Last Shift (2014) and Malum (2023).

Nothing divides the horror community like a remake. For decades fans have debated the merits of cinematic retellings of our most beloved horror films with strong arguments on either side of the equation. The trend exploded in the early 2000s with Platinum Dunes leading the charge to remake or reboot nearly every iconic title available. Recent years have seen the rise of legacy sequels; a curious hybrid that simultaneously continues the original story and (hopefully) takes the franchise in a new direction. Enter Malum. Anthony Diblasi’s 2023 gore-fest is an expanded reimagining of his own breakout film Last Shift. Released in 2014, this haunting cult horror follows rookie police officer Jessica Loren (Juliana Harkavy) whose first shift on the job goes terrifyingly wrong.

Co-written by Diblasi and Scott Poiley, Last Shift is an atmospheric nightmare with most of its terror coming...

Malum Review

Plot: On a search to uncover the mysterious circumstances surrounding her father’s death, a newly appointed police officer, Jessica Loren is assigned to the last shift in a decommissioned police station where a notoriously vicious cult saw their demise years prior. The lone officer at the station, she soon finds herself barraged by terrifying paranormal events, and in the process, is taken on a journey during which she learns the shocking truth behind her family’s entanglement with a demented cult leader.

Review: Reboots are nothing new these days, but rarely do you find a filmmaker who remakes his own film released not even ten years prior. Anthony Diblasi, a protege of Clive Barker who has produced or directed three adaptations of the British author’s writing, released Last Shift in 2014. The little-seen flick, written by Diblasi and Scott Polley, followed a rookie cop witnessing supernatural events in a police station.

‘Malum’ Review – ‘Last Shift’ Reimagining Takes a Bigger and Bloodier Approach
Image
In a rare turn of events, director/co-writer Anthony Diblasi gives a new update to his own 2014 horror film Last Shift with Malum. Diblasi reunites with Last Shift co-writer Scott Poiley, creating an expanded story that strengthens the original narrative and offers even bloodier occult mayhem. Diblasi’s Malum serves as a perfect introduction to his twisted demonic realm while supporting his original film as a fascinating companion piece.

Rookie cop Jessica Loren requests the last shift in a decommissioned police station where a notoriously vicious cult saw their demise years prior. Loren hopes to use the solitude to her advantage as she searches the empty building for answers about her father’s strange death. What should be a simple, quiet evening becomes anything but when the cult members seem to reach out from beyond the grave, plaguing the officer with harrowing visions and torment in attempts to finish what they started.

Malum: A Horror Movie Remake With a Difference
Image
Remakes are nothing new in Hollywood, and horror movie remakes have long been a thriving part of the industry. Directors will turn their creepy, viral short films into larger studio features, like David F. Sandberg did with Lights Out, and surprise foreign genre hits will sometimes get a makeover for U.S. audiences with the original director at the helm. But you’d be hard pressed to find a modern American director who’s interested in remaking their own feature film.

Enter Clive Barker protégé Anthony Diblasi, who was certainly up for the challenge when he was approached by new genre studio Welcome Villain with the possibility of remaking his 2014 low-budget gem, Last Shift. The director believes he’s the first American director to take on such a feat since Leo McCarey remade Love Affair into An Affair to Remember in 1957.

This week, Welcome Villain releases Diblasi’s remade version of Last Shift,...

‘Malum’ Gets Official VR Survival Horror Game ‘Flock of the Low God’
Image
Welcome Villain Films has teamed up with Xr content developer and publisher Top Right Corner to release a new VR survival horror game based on Malum, releasing in theaters this Friday, March 31.

The game, Flock of the Low God, is “a terrifying survival horror experience that immerses players into the thrilling world of Malum. Players will be challenged to survive their first shift at the Lanford Police Department by evading supernatural forces, unlocking new environments, scavenging weapons and tools, and defeating wave after wave of possessed cultists through intense close-quarters combat. The game will feature both single-player and multiplayer modes.”

This game was designed using sets and locations from the film, allowing players to follow in the footsteps of Officer Jessica Loren, played by Jessica Sula in Malum. Players will interact with various props, scenes, and locations recreated in screen-accurate virtual reality, including the main office, morgue, and shooting range.

Horror Movie Director Explains Why He's Remaking His Own Film
Image
Malum director Anthony Diblasi explains why the 2023 horror film is a remake of one of his previous films. Malum follows a young police officer named Jessica (Jessica Sula), who is assigned to the final shift of a decommissioned police station, only to be tormented overnight by a supernatural entity. This is the same premise of Diblasi's 2015 video-on-demand film Last Shift, which starred Juliana Harkavy as Jessica.

Screen Rant recently sat down with Diblasi (who also produced the Clive Barker adaptation The Midnight Meat Train) to discuss Malum ahead of its release on March 31. When asked why he and screenwriter Scott Poiley decided to remake Last Shift instead of creating a sequel when presented with the opportunity, he revealed that they wanted to update their original work with a bigger budget. Even though they are proud of their original project, Diblasi "was confident about it playing with an audience in the...

‘Malum’ Set Visit – Expanded ‘Last Shift’ Reimagining Aims to Be Rollercoaster Ride from Hell
Image
There’s something inherently creepy about abandoned locations that make them well-suited for horror movies. The former Metro Police Department Headquarters Building, slated for demolition in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, is one of them.

Its labyrinthine layout, a dizzying maze of cell blocks adorned with sickly green tile and offices spread across multiple floors, presents the perfect setting for director Anthony Diblasi to tackle the production of Malum, an expanded retelling of his 2014 cult favorite Last Shift.

Malum marks the first original production from the new genre studio Welcome Villain Films, who invited Bloody Disgusting exclusively to the Louisville set to learn about the more extensive, bloodier reimagining. The more pressing question heading in, of course, was why remake the potently chilling Last Shift?

Diblasi answers that immediately, detailing how the desire to expand Last Shift’s audience evolved into a brand new reimagining that opened up the mythology in an exciting way.

Review: Malum is a Frightfest Remake Worth Checking Out
Image
Remakes are nothing new. They made up like 98% of the horror output through the 2000s, and though they have slowed to allow room for other types of storytelling (legacy sequels remain the current hotness), they are still very much a part of the horror landscape. The standard remakes are really no-brainers—a film reaches a certain age and the studio might want to breathe new life into it for an opportune release. Or maybe a director has a particular vision or a way to spin it for a more modern audience. And of course, foreign films are often remade in the US to make them more appealing to an American audience. The smallest subsection of remakes is a little harder to understand, and often leave audiences wondering, “Why?”

These are the ones that fall somewhere in the middle. The originals aren’t really that old, they were released in the...

Official Trailer for 'Malum' - A Demonic Remake of Horror 'Last Shift'
Image
"Your daddy started something very important..." Welcome Villain has unveiled the official trailer for an indie horror film titled Malum, arriving in theaters only at the end of March. This is actually a new remake of the 2014 horror film Last Shift, made by the same filmmaker updating his own film, similar to the way Sam Raimi made Evil Dead 1 & 2. Helmed by director Anthony Diblasi and co-written by Diblasi and Scott Poiley, Malum re-imagines the original critically-acclaimed horror hit from the festival circuit and expands on the filmmaker's vision of nightmare-inducing terror. A rookie police officer willingly takes the last shift at a newly decommissioned police station in an attempt to uncover the mysterious connection between her police officer father's death and a vicious cult. This updated film stars Jessica Sula as Jessica Loren, with Kevin Wayne, Monroe Cline, Candice Coke, Valerie Loo, Clarke Wolfe, Natalie Victoria. This does look pretty freaky.

Bloody Disgusting can exclusively report today that new genre studio Welcome Villain Films’ first original production, previously known as Untitled Last Shift Reboot, has a new name

The official title treatment and new film stills have been unveiled for the film, now titled Malum, along with an announced Spring 2023 nationwide theatrical release.

Helmed by director Anthony Diblasi and co-written by Diblasi and Scott Poiley, the same creative team behind 2014’s Last Shift, Malum reimagines the original critically-acclaimed horror hit and expands the filmmakers vision of nightmare-inducing terror.

“With this new film, we really wanted it to stand on its own, and giving it a new title absolutely does that,” says filmmaker Anthony Diblasi. “The name ‘Malum’ is not only a major element of the plot and how things unfold, but that word, in some of the oldest languages in history, means ‘evil’ and ‘an offense against right or law,’ which seamlessly ties into the twisted,...

Last Shift: Anthony Diblasi directs a reimagining of his 2014 film
Image
Only eight years have gone by since the release of director Anthony Diblasi’s well-received horror feature Last Shift – but the filmmaker has already decided to return to the concept for an “expanded reimagining” that recently wrapped production. Jessica Sula (Split) stars in the currently untitled reimagining, which is coming to us from Welcome Villain Films. This is the company’s first feature.

The Last Shift reimagining centers on

a rookie police officer (Sula) who willingly takes the last shift at a newly decommissioned police station in an attempt to uncover the mysterious connection between her father’s death and a vicious cult. Throughout the night, she finds herself barraged by terrifying supernatural events while unveiling the truth behind her family’s twisted past. This reimagining takes the premise of the 2014 festival hit and flips it on its head, thrusting viewers into a relentless, adrenaline-fueled, bloody cult nightmare.

‘Last Shift’ Reimagining Gets a Star in ‘Split’ Actor Jessica Sula
Image
Earlier this year, brand new production and distribution company Welcome Villain Films launched with “an expanded reimagining” of 2014’s Last Shift in the works. Today, Last Shift announced its lead and a tease of what to expect.

Split actress Jessica Sula (“Scream: The TV Series”) will star in director Anthony Diblasi’s reimagining of his 2014 chiller.

Sula will play “a rookie police officer (Sula) who willingly takes the last shift at a newly decommissioned police station. She hopes to uncover the mysterious connection between her father’s death and a vicious cult, but throughout the night she’s thwarted by terrifying supernatural events that connect to her family’s twisted past.”

The untitled reboot has wrapped production, with post-production expected to finish this fall for a planned 2023 release.

Diblasi co-wrote the upcoming film with Scott Poiley, and it sounds like it will be a much bigger, bloodier affair.
