The Six Triple Eight delivers the quality and emotion that is expected of a Tyler Perry story. It touches upon the forgotten accomplishments of the unsung heroes of the 6888th Battalion of the Women’s Army Corps - the first of its kind to ever serve overseas. The movie is all about these women who were brought together to organize the delivery of thousands upon thousands of untouched mail and parcels of soldiers and their families from home during the Great War.
Witness the replay of history where 855 black women come together as they overcome unwarranted racism, obstruction, and vilification. All the while, their service brings relief to thousands of households in the US as they await their beloveds who are sacrificing their lives on the other side of the Atlantic.

When it comes to period pieces that chronicle real-life incidents, characterization becomes much more significant—for quite obvious reasons, as there needs to be a resemblance between the person in real life and their on-screen portrayal. Director Tyler Perry’s war drama The Six Triple Eight, which revolves around the real-life heroics of the titular battalion of all-Black female soldiers during the Second World War, presented the bitter reality of existing racial prejudice in the armed forces. As the movie introduced a number of historical figures while bringing the unsung war heroes to life, needless to say a strong ensemble cast was essential to do justice to their silver screen counterparts. Thankfully, the strength of The Six Triple Eight is showcased through the performance of its cast, stacked with some prolific actors from contemporary media.

Although Kerry Washington finds the fact that she’s receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame “surreal,” her father, Earl Washington, thinks she should’ve gotten a star a lot sooner.
“Anytime he would hear that somebody was getting one, he was like, ‘Why don’t you have one?’” Washington tells Variety, laughing as she recounts their conversations. “I was like, ‘I don’t know, Dad. I don’t make those decisions.’ So I feel like he’s manifested this moment. I’m excited that I get to share it with him.”
Washington’s father is right. She could’ve been honored anytime in her nearly 25-year career — with a resume highlighted by standout turns in films like “Save the Last Dance,” “The Last King of Scotland,” “She Hate Me” and “Ray,” all before she landed the role of D.C. fixer Olivia Pope on ABC’s “Scandal.

If American Son, the record Colby Acuff released in late August, paints a broad picture of present-day America, that’s by design. But the record is also a portrait of a songwriter processing grief and healing after the most difficult time in his life.
“I came in the room for pre-production on this album like, ‘Here’s the deal,’” Acuff says, “’I feel like shit after this whole year, but I do not want this record to be about me. I want this record to be about the listener, and...

Sandra Oh and Awkwafina proved to be a terrific duo this year in their hit Hulu telefilm “Quiz Lady.” The flick follows the pair as estranged sisters who must reunite and work together in order to pay for their mother’s gambling debts via the game show that one of them is obsessed with.
Oh and Awkwafina subvert expectations with their performances here with Oh playing the zany, wild sister and Awkwafina turning in a subdued performance as the awkward, restrained, quieter one. These dual performances have become the foundation of overwhelmingly positive notices for “Quiz Lady.”
Charles Bramesco (Indie Wire) opined: “The odd couple… shares a sensational chemistry, building on the base amusement of seeing Oh let her extension-laden hair down and Awkwafina crimp the straight-man character into weird new shapes.”
Emma Simmonds (Radio Times) observed: “Awkwafina and Sandra Oh prove a match made in comedy heaven in this...

Exclusive: Rapman utilized a superpower of his own — one that didn’t require him to don figure-hugging spandex tights and a cape — to survive the setbacks he encountered making the earthshaking new Netflix drama Supacell that began streaming Thursday.
“My superpower is discipline,” he declares.
Having an indomitable will comes in handy, too.
Rapman required his superpower to be at full throttle to help him wind his way through a thicket of obstacles.
For starters, he began the process in 2020, the year the pandemic hit everything. There were often heated and frank discussions over writers, special effects (the usual), and two composers came and went before he persuaded Netflix to let him chime with a third, Sillkey, the songwriter, producer and musician.

Back in early 2020, the British musician turned filmmaker Andrew Onwubolu — better known by his stage name Rapman — was readying for the release of his feature directorial debut “Blue Story” in the U.S. Based on his own experience living in South London, the musical crime drama tells the story of two friends from different neighborhoods who become embroiled in deadly gang wars. The film had already been a hit on home soil, making £4.7 million ($6 million) from a budget of £1.4 million ($1.8 million) the previous November, becoming the most successful British urban film of all time.
Sadly, like so many films due out in 2020, “Blue Story” was an early casualty of the Covid-19 pandemic. Paramount pulled its planned U.S. theatrical release and set it for digital months later. Another film Rapman was developing — “American Son,” Paramount’s remake of French hit “A Prophet” due to star Russell Crowe — also fell apart.

The upcoming slate features docs about topics including gamer brand FaZe Clan, former track and field superstar Butch Reynolds, and comedy and sports YouTube creator company Dude Perfect.

Kerry Washington and Elisabeth Moss will star in a limited series adaptation of the Araminta Hall novel “Imperfect Women” at Apple TV+, Variety has learned.
Annie Weisman will adapt the book for the screen. Weisman previously created the Apple dramedy series “Physical” starring Rose Byrne, which aired for three seasons at the streamer.
“Imperfect Women” is described as an “unconventional, psychological thriller examining a crime that shatters the lives of a decades-long friendship of three women. ‘Imperfect Women’ is a mystery complicated by perspective that explores guilt and retribution, love and betrayal, and the compromises we make that alter our lives irrevocably. As the investigation unravels, so does the truth about how even the closest relationships can change over time.”
“From the moment I received Araminta’s novel, I couldn’t put it down,” said Moss. “It was such an electrifying read; I fell in love with it immediately. I...

The long-awaited adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot from director Gary Dauberman (Annabelle Comes Home) is still without a release date, but we did get a bit of an update on Halloween night earlier this week. According to the latest reports, Warner Bros. is toying with the idea of bringing Salem’s Lot straight-to-streaming sometime in 2024.

One of the biggest questions this year in terms of horror releases remains: Where’s the Salem’s Lot remake? According to Variety, the Gary Dauberman-directed Stephen King adaptation may be heading to Max, the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming platform.
Originally set for theatrical release on September 9, 2022, the new Stephen King adaptation was recently bumped to April 21, 2023, before getting ejected from the theatrical slate altogether. As of now, Salem’s Lot still doesn’t have a release date.
While a Warner Bros. spokesperson told Variety, “No decision has been made about the film’s future distribution plans,” the outlet cites that “the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike has created a growing need for Max content.” That makes Salem’s Lot a prime candidate, considering how long the adaptation has been shelved.
Perhaps, with vocal support from fans, Salem’s Lot may yet head to theaters as Evil Dead Rise did earlier this year.

Kerry Washington has no reservations about returning to her past restaurant job if Hollywood is only offering harmful roles when it comes to representation.
The “Scandal” alum has stood by her convictions for decades, and recently told Marie Claire in a cover story that she approaches her career fearlessly.
“Even in the beginning of my career, I would say I’d rather work another shift at the restaurant than do a movie that is going to be bad for women or Black people,” Washington said. “Part of being an artist, being a creative person, is constantly being willing to be a beginner and do things you’ve never done, be in situations you’ve never been, stretch, grow. I’m so attracted to that kind of work, but it is also so fucking scary.”
Washington reflected on leading hit ABC Shonda Rhimes-produced series “Scandal” as being “part of something transformative and culturally significant.

Steven Pasquale is set to star opposite Neve Campbell in the upcoming ABC series “Avalon,” Variety has learned.
The announcement of Pasquale’s casting comes just one day after Campbell’s, with Campbell set to play the lead role in the show. It hails from co-creators David E. Kelley and Michael Connelly, with the show based on a short story that Connelly wrote. It was ordered straight-to-series at ABC in February.
The series takes place in the main city of Avalon on Catalina Island, where LA Sheriff Department Detective Nicole “Nic” Searcy (Campbell) heads up a small office. Michael B. Jordan and Josh Brolin are being considered by director Sam Raimi to star in his remake of the 2009 French film A Prophet.

It's been nearly three years since filmmaker Sam Raimi directed a movie, 2013's Oz: The Great and Powerful, and nearly seven years since his last horror movie, 2009's Drag Me to Hell. While the director has been keeping busy on the small screen with Starz's Ash Vs. Evil Dead, which returns for its second season later this year, he also directed a new 60-second horror short film that serves as an ad for Chevrolet's 2016 Malibu and Cruze vehicles. Here's what the director had to say in a statement to AdWeek.
"We approached the development of the Chevrolet trailer in the same way we would an actual movie-by thinking through the plot, characters and eventual outcome. I've been in plenty of theaters where the audience is so concerned for the safety of the main characters that they call out warnings to save them. That's what this is based on."

Sam Raimi is jumping from superheroes and Oz, to possibly helming the mooted remake of A Prophet.
After spending a number of years with superheroes, fantasy characters and demonic gypsies, Sam Raimi might find himself at the helm of a gritty crime thriller.
Variety reports that Raimi is in talks to direct Sony’s American remake of A Prophet, the masterful 2009 French film about a small-time Algerian convict who rises to become a criminal overlord inside the walls of a prison.
The script is being adapted by novelist Dennis Lehane, whose books include Mystic River and Shutter Island, and who recently wrote the screenplay for the indie crime drama The Drop (based on his short story Animal Rescue).
Raimi’s last film was 2013’s Oz the Great and Powerful, and his other recent directorial efforts include Drag Me To Hell and the Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire.

I've been wondering what Sam Raimi's next big movie project would be, and now it looks like he's getting ready to make his move on one. Variety is reporting that the Evil Dead director is in talks to direct a remake of A Prophet for Sony Pictures.
If Raimi takes the gig, this will be a very different kind of project for him. The original film follows an Arab man who is sent to a French prison and soon becomes a Mafia kingpin among the prisoners.
The script for the remake was written by Dennis Lehane (Shutter Island), and Neal H. Moritz is attached to produce. The studio is looking to put the project on the fast track to production, and they hope to start shooting this summer. On top of trying to get Raimi on board to direct, the studio is also looking to cast someone in the lead role.
