The Málaga Film Festival held the closing ceremony for its Mafiz industry section on Friday evening. Industry-accredited representatives attended, celebrating the culmination of five days of intense networking and pitching.
The big winner from this year’s Mafiz Work in Progress section was Carlos Saiz’s “Lionel,” produced by Bluconic Films, Blur and Icónica in Spain and Promenade Films in France. The film won the Cine y Tele, Sideral, Yagán and Rec Festival prizes.
“‘Lionel’ is a story of reconciliation between a father and son after two decades apart. Through an intimate road trip, the film explores the complexity of family bonds and the lasting scars of Lionel’s paternal absence,” Saiz explained to Variety ahead of this year’s Mafiz. “Inspired by the real-life story of my friend Lionel and his family—who portray themselves in the film—this project originated from a journey he once recounted to me.

Acclaimed filmmaker, writer, and festival favourite Izzy Lee makes a triumphant return to Pigeon Shrine FrightFest Glasgow with the International Premiere of her highly anticipated debut feature, House of Ashes. No stranger to the FrightFest crowd, Lee has long been a celebrated alum of the festival with her provocative and genre-pushing short films. Following a sold-out world premiere at Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, House of Ashes brings its phantasmagoric chills and politically charged terror to Scotland’s most prestigious horror showcase. "What evil did you bring here?" Whatever it is, I don't want it in my apartment! Cranked Up has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror anthology feature titled Tenants, featuring "7 Floors of Terror!" This will be debuting on VOD at the end of this month in time for horror season. After waking up in an unfamiliar apartment complex, a woman desperately searches for her sister while being hunted by a shadowy figure. As she makes her way through the building, unspeakable horrors befall the tenants she interacts with. With segments directed by Jonathan Louis Lewis, Sean Mesler, Blake Reigle, and Buz Wallick. The anthology film stars Mary O'Neil, Christa Collins, Myles Cranford, Rib Hillis, Clarke Wolfe, Kathryne Isabelle Easton, and Douglas Vermeeren. The mysterious black smoke creepo in this looks pretty cool, but the rest of the segments seem hit or miss, which is the usual with these fun anthology tales.

Eun-Kyung Yoon's The Tenants reflects South Korean hardships that are universally traumatic. It's fringe horror, nodding to existential absurdism and black-and-white interpretations of Kafkaesque illusions, but terrifying nonetheless. Yoon examines the drab reality of middle-class workers who only exist to uphold any city's ecosystem: corrupt capitalism built on the backs of its forgotten contributors. Storytelling doesn't lack eerie imagery of crawlspace dwellers or sleep paralysis encounters, yet Yoon avoids traditional genre formulas. Don't expect the shared-space suspense of Two Pigeons or the cuckoo slasher violence of Dream Home — The Tenants plays more like artisan science fiction with slinking discomfort.
Shin-dong (Kim Dae-geon) is your typical slave to the grind. He crunches corporate numbers for Happy Meat, an artificial meat company that barely pays him enough to afford rent. That won't matter much longer because Shin-dong's child-aged landlord giddily reveals that his struggling tenant will soon be homeless due to building renovations.
