A history of underwhelming anime adaptations is one of the most bittersweet things about being a Junji Ito fan. In a sense, the beloved manga creator's works, known for his iconic horror tales and unforgettable, disturbing visual style, stay mostly preserved as a result of a track record of mixed successes. However, for fans of Ito who root for a worthy transposition of Ito from page to screen, the wait for something promising like the plagued Uzumaki can be frustrating.
Thankfully, a macabre world of anime awaits all Junji Ito fans, all worthy alternatives. Whether satiated or starved by the polarizing Junji Ito: Japanese Tales of the Macabre, there's no shortage of anime offerings featuring familiar psychological twists, stomach-turning yet captivating visuals, or folkloric inspirations similar to Itos.

Metallic Rouge is an anime that makes use of persisting science-fiction themes of co-existence between humans and androids in a futuristic society where prejudice is easy and emancipation is hard to come by. Produced by Bones, the studio behind My Hero Academia and both anime adaptations of Fullmetal Alchemist, Motonobu Hori's latest directorial venture brings politics and mecha-battles to a vibrant cyberpunk world beset with inequalities in its very foundations. Co-created by Yutaka Izubuchi, with a screenplay from Toshizo Nemoto and music composition from Towa Tei, the series features the voices of Yume Miyamoto as Rouge Redstar, Tomoyo Kurosawa as Naomi Orthmann, Hiroyuki Yoshino as Jaron “Joker” Fate, and Yu Shimamura as Sarah Fitzgerald in the debut episode.
From time immemorial, humanity filled the gaps in its understanding of the world and rationalized its own fear with the conception of God as an all-powerful being atop the known universe.

Since Metallic Rouge was announced at Fuji TV Anime Lineup Presentation 2023, it was clear that the new anime series from the prestigious Bones studio would be an emotive way to commemorate the first 25 years of the company made by ex-key members of Sunrise Studio (now Bandai Namco Filmworks). Most anime enthusiasts know Bones for series like My Hero Academia , Fullmetal Alchemist (both adaptations), Bungo Stray Dogs , Mob Psycho 100 and movies like Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop and Josee, the Tiger and the Fish . But true fans of the studio’s vast filmography know that their original works had an important impact on the anime industry since their beginning. So, why is Metallic Rouge so perfect to celebrate Bones’ first 25 years? 2024’s anime season is full of exciting series – both old and new – that includes titles like Metallic Rouge, Bucchigiri?!i, and Dragon Ball Daima. However, one of the year’s most anticipated anime releases is Solo Leveling, a power fantasy dungeon crawling epic that’s based on Chugong’s South Korean web novel. Solo Leveling has found a dedicated fanbase who have eagerly awaited its transition to television, yet the positive reception around the anime’s series premiere is greater than what anyone could have anticipated.
Crunchyroll has started to stream Solo Leveling for international audiences and it’s already caused overwhelming traffic for the anime streaming service after only one episode. Audiences are clearly ready for Solo Leveling to become their newest anime obsession, but there are many reasons why it deserves to be the one series that people need to watch in 2024, whether they’re seasoned anime fans or complete newcomers.
