Diane Kruger is set to receive the Golden Eye Award at this year’s Zurich Film Festival. Famed for working with directors including Quentin Tarantino, Wolfgang Peterson and Robert Zemeckis, the 47-year-old is renowned as one of Hollywood’s finest character actresses and is probably best known for her roles as Helen of Sparta in 2004’s ‘Troy’, Bridget von Hammersmark in Tarantino’s ‘Inglourious Basterds’ and Anna in 2009’s ‘Mr. Nobody’. She said: “Thank you Zurich Film Festival for this wonderful recognition. I’m honoured and proud to be part of the impressive list of past honourees. “I look forward to return to Zurich and celebrate with all of you in October!” Diane will receive the Golden Eye Award on 2 October, with the Zurich Film Festival taking place from 28 September to 8 October. Christian Jungen, Zurich Film Festival’s artistic director, said in a statement: “Diane Kruger is one of cinema’s most versatile character actresses.

German actress Diane Kruger will be honored with the Golden Eye award, a lifetime achievement prize, at this year’s Zurich Film Festival, the festival announced Thursday.
Kruger has had a diverse career, balancing roles in global blockbusters — she is arguably best-known for her turn in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds and for her performances alongside Nicolas Cage in the National Treasure films — with work in more international and art house movies. Her starring role in Fatih Akin’s In the Fade, as a victim of neo-Nazi violence who seeks bloody revenge, won her the best actress prize in Cannes in 2017. More recently, she starred in Neil Jordan’s 1930s-set crime thriller Marlowe alongside Liam Neeson. Marlowe screened in Zurich last year.

It has been two weeks since the passing of Cormac McCarthy, the taciturn Southern gentleman widely regarded as one of the great American novelists of the last hundred years, if not all of American history. His prose poetry, as deliberate and lacerating in its construction as the lethal instruments often featured therein, evokes the country as an earthy garden of sin where men gamble their fates and faith before a pitiless, Old Testament God.
Where many great writers of McCarthy’s generation carved ever-deeper niches into the peculiar artifices of language and the 20th century’s assault of information, his lucid, imagistic narratives and spectacles of violent incident have often suggested the cinematic. His engagement with genre––Western, horror, neo-noir––interrogated American myths, peeling back their skin and tissue to reveal the stark existential queries beneath. McCarthy was fascinated by cinema from early in his career––he wrote several screenplays dating back to the 1970s,...

Cormac McCarthy, a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist who endured decades of obscurity and poverty before film versions of “All the Pretty Horses,” “No Country for Old Men” and “The Road” brought him a wide readership and financial security, died Tuesday in Santa Fe, N.M. His publisher, Penguin Random House, said his son John McCarthy announced his death from natural causes. He was 89.
Extremely reclusive, McCarthy shunned publicity so effectively that one critic observed, “He wasn’t even famous for it.” But Joel and Ethan Coen’s 2008 adaptation of 2005 novel “No Country for Old Men” put him momentarily in the limelight; the crime thriller, which starred Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin, won Oscars for best picture, director, adapted screenplay and supporting actor.

There are few fictional worlds as expansive and popular as that of Middle-Earth from The Lord of the Rings. The stories of J.R.R. Tolkien changed the landscape of modern fiction in the 20th century, and they continue to be some of the most beloved of all time. There have been numerous adaptations of the author’s works over the years, ranging from the Hobbit animated TV special to Peter Jackson’s live-action Lord of the Rings trilogy from the early 2000s and, most recently, Amazon Prime Video’s The Rings of Power series. The desire for new Lord of the Rings materials has been consistent over the years, and fans are likely going to get a lot of it in the coming years.
Earlier this year, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO announced Wbd’s intentions to evolve The Lord of the Rings into a cornerstone franchise, similar to what Disney has done with Star Wars.

In case you missed it during your annual "Star Wars Day" machete viewing order party, season 2 of "Star Wars: Visions" was officially released on Disney+, and is back with an even more ambitious catalog of animated shorts from various studios. While the first season was best known for sticking to a theme of Japanese anime influences and pushing the boundaries of "Star Wars" aesthetics, the second season of "Visions" somehow takes things even further. Pulling from studios all around the world, including the famous British animation studio Aardman, Irish studio Cartoon Saloon, and French studio La Cachette, this season has an interesting focus on diverse and distinct cultural flairs and influences.
Despite how different the shorts that make up "Visions" are — they're completely self-contained and unique in tone and style — they all share the same "Star Wars" spirit, bringing us insight into the larger galaxy that exists outside of the Skywalker bubble.

Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Star Wars: Visions Season 2.The Star Wars franchise takes place in a vast galaxy, and, despite the ample stories already told in the universe, the franchise has still only scratched the surface. As new projects venture into remote corners of the world and different points in time, the world is ever-growing, so there is no end to Star Wars. Star Wars: Visions is a manifestation of that. Taking place anywhere from unexplored history to the distant future, Visions features a little bit of everything while establishing lore and telling fascinating stories. The anthology series includes a variety of characters, planets, and time periods.

The following contains spoilers from Star Wars: Visions Season 2, Episode 5, "Journey to the Dark Head," streaming now on Disney+.
Star Wars: Visions Season 2 pays homage to quite a bit of Star Wars lore, from the High Republic era to the modern periods. As a series, the animation anthology does its own thing in terms of visuals and narrative. However, the deep cuts and comparisons that nod to the source material fans are familiar with resonate deeply.
In Episode 5, "Journey to the Dark Head," Visions ends up remixing the story of Anakin Skywalker. It leans hard into trauma, riffing on the heartbreaking descent to darkness the young Jedi undertook. But in this case, there's a more nuanced, happy ending that fans wish Anakin got before he became Darth Vader.

The following contains spoilers from Star Wars: Visions Season 2, Episode 6, "The Spy Dancer," streaming now on Disney+.
As expected, Star Wars: Visions Season 2 is outstanding. There are nine episodes from nine different animation studios, and each one of them brings its animation style to bear. Amidst all of those styles, there is plenty of color and plenty of storytelling potential. In fact, every one of the episodes could spawn a spinoff series of its own.
While Visions isn't considered canon by Disney, all the episodes are quintessentially Star Wars. There are Stormtroopers, lightsabers, Sith and all the other cool things that have made Star Wars into the global phenomenon that it is. However, Visions also puts the bad things on display with the good things. "The Spy Dancer" is a family-centric tragedy that puts the Empire's worst flaw on display, and it is appalling for more than one reason. Here's...

The following contains spoilers for Star Wars: Visions, Season 2, Episode 1, "Sith" now streaming on Disney+.
The entry by El Guiri Studios for Star Wars: Visions Season 2 is a wonderful short story about a Sith Lord chasing down an apprentice trying to find her own destiny. Since most of the Visions entries fit into a known time period in Star Wars, when does "Sith" take place? Every entry in Season 2 is a visually distinct masterpiece, and "Sith" is no different. Like the forthcoming Across the Spider-Verse movie, "Sith" blends two- and three-dimensional animation together.
The story centers on a former Sith apprentice trying to use art as therapy to heal herself in the Force. Her Master arrives, and she is forced to both face her own darkness and him, only killing the latter. It's worth remembering that none of these shorts are considered canon in Star Wars. Close your eyes and meditate on the Force for a moment. What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think about "Star Wars"? For me, it's the opening shot of "A New Hope" when the Tantive IV is being stalked by Darth Vader's Star Destroyer, the Devastator. The next image is, without a doubt, Ben Solo igniting Anakin Skywalker's lightsaber to give to Luke in his hut on Tatooine. By leaps and bounds, the lightsaber has become the most recognizable piece of "Star Wars" lore.
Used sparingly throughout the original trilogy, the Jedi's weapon was only unsheathed in a handful of key moments, allowing for maximum impact when Luke, Obi-Wan or Vader ignited their blade. As the Skywalker saga continued into the prequels, the lightsaber was used one too many times and the magic of seeing it on screen was severely diminished. By choosing to not...

This post contains spoilers for "Star Wars: Visions" season 2.
The highlight of "Star Wars: Visions" season 2 was, for me, episode 5: "Journey to the Dark Head." Animated by South Korea's Studio Mir (which was responsible for the majority of episodes in "The Legend of Korra"), the short is set during a period of open war between the Jedi and the Sith. "Journey to the Dark Head" has the classical anime style that made "The Village Bride" (courtesy of Kinema Citrus) and "The Ninth Jedi" (the work of Production I.G.) such standouts of "Visions" season 1.
There are three main characters. One is Ara (Jang Ye Na/Ashley Park), a young girl born on the Outer Rim planet Dolgarak. On Ara's home is two large parallel statues, representing the light and dark side of the Force. Children are taught to read prophetic images left on the stones below these statues by rain.

This article contains spoilers for the first episode of "Star Wars: Visions" season 2.
For those who regard "Star Wars: Visions" as one of the most exciting additions to the entire franchise, it's no surprise that the very first installment of season 2 feels unique and distinct right from the first minute. Rather than starting with an opening crawl or a slow pan across stars, as the main saga movies do, we open on an almost impressionistic landscape completely devoid of color and form. Produced by Spanish animation studio El Guiri and directed by Rodrigo Blaas, the episode (which is plainly yet evocatively titled "Sith") proves to be a fascinating choice to kick off this next batch of shorts -- not only for its aesthetic risks, as impressive as they are, but for boldly and unapologetically evolving some of the most core tenets of the "Star Wars" universe, too.

Star Wars: Visions is a collection of animated short films from different studios that offer a unique new perspective on Star Wars. The first volume focused on Japanese studios, with each episode featuring a different anime style. Volume 2 expands to include studios from around the world, including Ireland, Chile, South Korea, and South Africa.
Star Wars Visions has to balance the freedom for each studio to tell original creative stories while staying true to the heart of Star Wars. Each Star Wars: Visions episode explores new characters' stories, including the Sith, the Jedi, and characters that aren't connected to Force users. The Star Wars Visions episodes are also influenced by the culture of each country, with the French episode tapping into the idea of spy dancers while the Irish episode brings the Irish ghost story style into Star Wars.

The animated anthology series "Star Wars: Visions," which debuted in 2021, may be the best way to explore the franchise's vast and complicated mythology, better even than legacy shows like "The Book of Boba Fett" and "Obi-Wan Kenobi." Every one of the "Star Wars" movies has featured a lot of background detail, often depicting space aliens of all walks of life casually going about their business, oblivious to the adventures that our heroes may be going through at any given moment. In presenting out-of-timeline animated shorts, "Visions" has the leeway to look into the cracks and explore what life is like in the "Star Wars" universe outside the tiresome saga of the Skywalkers. It has only been through expanded universe fiction, and shows like "Visions," that Starwoids have been able to see what non-soldiers are doing in wartime.

Part of the joy of Star Wars: Visions is, you never know quite what you’re going to get when you load up an episode. Lucasfilm’s anthology series lets animation houses present their own unique spin on the galaxy far, far away – taking any characters, any settings, any imagery from George Lucas’ sprawling space opera and doing whatever feels right or interesting with them, canon be damned. Think of it like a remix compilation, with wildly creative spins on familiar material from fascinatingly varied voices. Where Volume 1 of Visions was comprised solely of Japanese anime studios, Volume 2 is going worldwide – including a contribution from British stop-motion legends Aardman.
While there’s no Wallace and Gromit or Feathers McGraw here, Aardman’s short ‘I Am Your Mother’ (see what they did there?) is set in the aftermath of the original trilogy, and tells the story of wannabe-pilot Twi’lek tween...

Out of all the studios announced to be working on Volume 2 of the animated anthology series, "Star Wars: Visions," it's Aardman Animation's involvement that's got me the most intrigued. The "Wallace & Gromit," "Shaun the Sheep," and "Chicken Run" stop-motion powerhouse's various idiosyncratic settings and toothy-mouthed characters aren't as far removed from the galaxy far, far away as you might imagine, either.
Speaking during the "Visions" panels at "Star Wars" Celebration 2023 in London, England (where members of the /Film crew are currently on the ground), the team behind Aardman's "Visions" short, title "I Am Your Mother," noted that stop-motion has a long history in "Star Wars." Indeed, the Industrial Light & Magic visual effects legend Phil Tippett famously used never-before-seen VFX to make the stop-motion tauntauns and At-ATs more convincing for the Hoth sequences in "The Empire Strikes Back." The past, present and future of Star Wars was on ample display on Friday at the Star Wars Celebration fan convention, as Lucasfilm unveiled the most robust look yet at the company’s plans for the hallowed franchise. As studio chief Kathleen Kennedy revealed three new feature films and first looks at four upcoming TV series, Lucasfilm made clear it aims to test just how far it can stretch the Star Wars galaxy: creatively, logistically and even historically.
Starting with “The Phantom Menace” and concluding with “The Rise of Skywalker,” the previous nine “Star Wars” movies have all taken place within a roughly 70-year timeline, straddling the climactic Battle of Yavin in “A New Hope” that has served as the official fulcrum point for the franchise for six decades. After season 1 proved to be a hit, LucasFilm have provided a release date and story information surrounding Star Wars: Visions season 2. The animated anthology’s renewal seems obvious given the multiple directions it took in terms of both the narrative and visual style. Featuring nine animated shorts by leading Japanese anime studios like Studio Trigger (Cyberpunk: Edgerunners) and Production I.G. (Ghost in the Shell), Visions experimented with multiple color schemes and also featured a star-studded ensemble with voice talents of Neil Patrick Harris, Lucy Liu, George Takei, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
The debut season proved how the Star Wars lore and a format like Japanese anime can go hand in hand. This only seems poetic given how George Lucas’ A New Hope has many parallels with Akira Kurosawa’s Hidden Fortress. Oscar-nominated and double Palme d’Or winning film company Plattform Production has premiered its latest film, “A Tiger in Paradise,” by director and editor Mikel Cee Karlsson, as part of a live event that received a standing ovation at Cph:dox, one of Europe’s leading documentary film festivals.
Set in the picturesque Swedish countryside, the doc takes viewers on a surreal journey into the inner world of Swedish indie folk singer-songwriter José González.
Peppered with songs from his latest album “Local Valley,” introspective musings, self-deprecation and playful special effects involving moving portraits, looping techniques and Conway’s famous Game of Life computation model, the film opens with a disarmingly candid disclosure by González about his past mental health issues.
Karlsson tells Variety: “We used José’s mental illness as a jumping off point, in a way, to discuss themes that both of us think are really interesting. We read a lot of the same books.

Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 1.After a long wait filled with intense speculation, commentary, and rumors, the third season of The Mandalorian has aired its first episode. The series unquestionably saved the franchise in the wake of the disastrous critical backlash to The Rise of Skywalker, and its success has led to the development of a diverse ecosystem of Star Wars shows on Disney+, including Andor, The Book of Boba Fett, The Bad Batch, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Tales of the Jedi, and Visions. While the first episode of The Mandalorian Season 3 confirms that many things have stayed the same, there are some notable differences from the past, including a brand new intro and logo that hints at a new direction for the series.

When “Star Wars: Visions” debuted back in 2021, it was just what the doctor ordered. A collection of gorgeously animated shorts by some of Japan’s leading animation studios, the shorts offered up new sensibilities and visual styles that existed outside the comparatively stodgy realms of the live-action “Star Wars” franchise.
Fortunately, “Star Wars: Visions” is coming back on May 4 with a second volume of all-new studios from around the world.
Instead of exclusively Japanese studios, the second volume of “Visions” canvasses our world, with shorts from El Guiri (Spain), Cartoon Saloon (Ireland), Punkrobot (Chile), Aardman (the United Kingdom), Studio Mir (South Korea), Studio La Cachette (France), 88 Pictures (India), D’art Shtajio (Japan) and Triggerfish (South Africa). This is truly an international affair!

Bhutanese filmmaker Dechen Roder’s new film, “I, The Song,” which is selected at the Venice Production Bridge’s gap financing market, will commence principal photography in December.
Roder’s debut feature “Honeygiver Among the Dogs” premiered at Busan in 2016, and went on to have a successful festival run including at Berlin, Locarno, Hong Kong, Taipei and Fribourg, where it won three major awards.
“I, The Song” was born when two friends of Roder experienced the horror of being in non-consensual pornographic videos and photos in Bhutan, where in both cases it was recorded and shared without their knowledge or consent.
Roder also wanted to make a film to explore the story where a remote community in Bhutan claimed that the capital city Thimphu had stolen a sacred song of theirs, performing it on TV, over the radio, on stage, and for entertainment. The community felt that this song was sung out of context,...

Pairing wine with movies! See the trailers and hear the fascinating commentary for these movies, and many more, at Trailers From Hell. This week we pair wines with a look – and listen – to three Martin Scorsese films about music.
Who uses music to better effect in movies than Martin Scorsese? Put your hands down – that was a rhetorical question. Scorsese, however, has not only used music in his films, he has examined it – thoroughly.
No Direction Home is the 2005 documentary on Bob Dylan as he appeared in the early to mid 1960s. Dylan’s manager got the ball rolling by conducting scores of interviews with people who knew The Enigmatic One back in the day. When it came time to put all that video, plus the hundreds of hours of footage culled from historical sources together, Scorsese’s name came up.

The anime anthology "Star Wars: Visions" was a breath of fresh air for the "Star Wars" franchise, tapping into its Japanese cinematic roots and influences by recruiting a number of Japanese animation studios to bring the galaxy to life. In a time of fandom obsessed with canon alignment, "Visions" emboldened artistic and philosophical conversations with the franchise, the Force, and the Jedi -- more so than most other onscreen "Star Wars" media -- by letting creatives steer the wheel and reconfigure the kyber crystal and the Force in their own image. The result was nine non-canon shorts, featuring a myriad...

People like Ralph Bakshi and Frank Franzetta left a very specific visual imprint in the realm of fantasy art and storytelling, and now a new project has come along which takes the baton from those veterans and carries it a few steps further in the race. I'm not confident that rotoscoped projects have a vibrant future ahead of them (they are extremely work-intensive), but the style isn't fully dead yet, and "The Spine of Night" is going to make damn sure everyone knows it by leaning hard into hyper-violence and psychedelic imagery. When Masi Oka was first approached to provide a voice for “Star Wars: Visions” — Lucasfilm’s sensational new anthology series for Disney Plus that presents nine “Star Wars” shorts by seven Japanese anime studios — it did not take much to convince the actor to say yes. “Star Wars: A New Hope” was the first movie Oka ever saw in theaters. It was the first VHS tape he ever purchased. His first job out of college was at Industrial Light and Magic, and some of his earliest credits are as a visual effects artist on George Lucas’s “Star Wars” prequels.
“My whole career was shaped by ‘Star Wars,'” Oka says. As an actor, he’d held out hope that he might land a role in Disney’s live-action “Star Wars” sequels, or on the Disney Plus series “The Mandalorian.” So by the time he heard about “Visions,” he was primed.

I Still Love You, chances are you’ve seen the talented multihyphenate at one point or another, but he can currently be heard (and seen) as Dan on Visions, which fuses Star Wars and anime. Once he got the role, Fisher was pleased to see that his Padawan character resembled him, which is a rare occurrence for voice actors. He was also ...

[Editor’s Note: The following review is based on all nine episodes of “Star Wars: Visions” and contains spoilers for Episode 1.]
“Star Wars: Visions” is one of, if not the best, titles — television, film, or otherwise — to come out of the sci-fi franchise’s era under Disney ownership. It’s a beautifully animated and smartly written homage to everything that fans love about “Star Wars,” as well as the rare kind of installment in a multi-billion dollar IP that doesn’t feel like it was created by committee or focus-tested until all the artistry has been stripped away. If you’re a “Star Wars” fan who has become apathetic toward lightsabers and the Force in recent years, “Visions” could remind you about what made you love the franchise in the first place.
That’s a lot of extremely high praise, but “Visions” earns it over the course of its nine brief episodes. The animated anthology series’ episodes hail from seven Japanese anime studios...

The "Star Wars: Visions" anthology is a much-hyped Disney+ release for animation fans who are hungry to experience Star Wars in a different way. George Lucas' galaxy far, far has always paid homage to Japanese cinema, particularly the films of Akira Kurosawa films. Now, under Lucasfilm's guidance, "Visions" opens the door to artists who specialize in Japanese animation, allowing them to tell new stories in the Star Wars universe unbounded by restrictive canon, re-mythologizing the Force and its wielders in the process.
"Star Wars: Visions" consists of nine short films produced by seven Japanese animation studios, all of which have superb reputations. However, if you're not familiar with anime,...

The Film TV, the Paris-based outfit headed by well-established producers Michael Gentile and Lauraine Heftler, has gained a substantial track record in three years.
The banner is presenting its first two shows at Series Mania Festival, Julie Delpy’s TV debut “On The Verge” which is backed by Canal Plus and Netflix; and “Jeune et Golri,” a series set against the backdrop of the stand-up comedy world.
Commissioned by French pay TV service Ocs, “Jeune et Golri” is a half-hour contemporary romantic comedy series based on an original idea by Agnès Hurstel, an actor and screenwriter, who created the show with Victor Saint-Macary (“Le Brio”) and Léa Domenach.
Hurstel stars in the show as Prune, a 25 year-old stand-up comedian who falls in love with a middle-aged man, Francis, not knowing he has a six-year-old girl. While Prune herself still feels like a teenager, she becomes an unlikely step mom to this little girl.
