$634 Million Animated Movie Climbs Back Up Netflix Global Chart Just When It Looked Like It Would Fall
Image
An animated movie that was a $600 million hit in theaters and then found success again on streaming, has risen back up the Netflix global chart at the moment it looked like it was about to fall from the Top 10. This combined success is a divergence from a modern trend, as in recent years, animation has had a complicated relationship with the box office and with streaming. The theatrical success of animated releases, even from major companies such as Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios, has become increasingly difficult to predict.

For instance, Disney's Encanto likely failed to turn a profit in theaters, grossing $261.3 million against a roughly $150 million budget, but its Disney+ release made it a smash, sending the song "We Don't Talk About Bruno" to the top of the charts. Meanwhile, other titles have debuted with low to middling opening weekends but proved to be sleeper hits, including 2023's...

Image
Universal-owned animation studio Illumination surprised fans with a Halloween special based on its popular Sing franchise. The special, Sing: Thriller, was released on Netflix this Wednesday and announced the day before.

The 11-minute short sees the cast and characters reenact scenes from the music video for the famous 1983 Michael Jackson song “Thriller.” Many of the actors, such as Matthew McConaughey, Scarlett Johansson, Nick Kroll, Taron Egerton, and Tori Kelly, return for the special. Garth Jennings, director of the first two films, also returns to direct and voice the character Ms. Crawly.

So is Sing: Thriller full of spooky songs and terrifying tunes? Let’s find out.

The special begins with the theater troop performing a play at the theater. We see many cameos in the crowd, including a surprise return of fan-favorite Mike the Mouse from the first Sing movie, who was originally voiced by Seth McFarlane. They put...

The 2016 animated jukebox musical Sing comes from Illumination Entertainment and features some of the best characters Illumination has brought to the screen. Sing is set in a world of anthropomorphic animals and follows Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey), a koala who has to come up with a way to save his struggling theater. His idea is to host a talent show to prevent foreclosure, but the competition leads to problems of its own.

The cast of Sing includes an ensemble of award-winning actors and talented singers. Among them are, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson, John C. Reilly, Taron Egerton, and more. Sing earned $634 million at the box office (via BoxOfficeMojo) and has a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes. It led to a sequel, Sing 2, in 2021, and there are plans for a Sing 3.

Steve Carell, Tara Strong, and Pierre Coffin in Moi, moche et méchant 4 (2024)
Following Despicable Me 4's successful opening, another film in the Minions spin-off series has been announced.

Illumination and Universal have announced that Minions 3 is on the way and will arrive in June of 2027. The film will be directed by regular Despicable Me and Minions helmer Pierre Coffin and continue the successful franchise that has earned almost $5bn to date.

As shared by The Hollywood Reporter, Minions 3 will be written by Brian Lynch, who wrote film in the series as well as The Secret Life Of Pets, and will be produced by Chris Meldandri and Bill Ryan.

The current film in the series, Despicable Me 4, has already snagged a healthy $230m worldwide from its opening weekend, proving that there’s still an appetite for these characters – even though Minions 3 will mark the seventh film in the series.

That was certainly evident back in 2022, when Minions: The Rise Of Gru...

Disney Needs More Than Frozen 4 To Keep Up With Its Biggest Competition
Image
Disney's recent confirmation of Frozen 3 and Frozen 4 signals a lack of confidence in its other properties and suggests a stagnant creative direction. Illumination and Dreamworks, with their diverse range of franchises like Despicable Me, Super Mario Bros., and Kung Fu Panda, pose stiff competition for Disney Animation. While the Frozen franchise guarantees commercial success, relying solely on it may jeopardize Disney Animation's position at the top of the animation industry, especially as other studios build their own successful franchises.

With Disney’s recent confirmation of Frozen 3 and Frozen 4, the studio’s slate of upcoming movies may struggle to compete against its animation rivals. The name of Disney is synonymous with the form of animation; the studio has been a force to be reckoned with for as long as cartoons have boasted sound. However, Disney Animation has been on something of a losing streak as of late. Amid the box office disappointments of Strange World,...
