By the ripe age of 27, the virtuoso card player Stu Ungar had won two back-to-back World Series of Poker titles, following a gin rummy career so successful that he reportedly had a hard time finding people to play him.
Seventeen years and one more World Series of Poker title later, he was found dead in a Vegas motel room of a heart attack with a small amount of drugs in his system after years of addiction.
Ungar’s dramatic life story has been told onscreen before, in the 2003 unauthorized film High Roller (with Ungar played by The Sopranos’ Michael Imperioli) and in the 2006 ESPN documentary One of a Kind. But now, for the first time, a creative team has secured Ungar’s life story rights exclusively from his family and is promising to shed further light on Ungar’s journey.

What About Bob? has turned out to be one of the more enduring Bill Murray comedies, as much for its hilariously petty behind-the-scenes stories as the movie laughs that still hold up. Murray, who’s on the record as hating his experiences shooting films like Scrooged, sounds like he had fun on this one. “The script wasn’t nearly as annoying as I could be, so I had to improvise a lot in the movie. And even what you eventually see in the movie isn’t close to how really annoying I can be when I put my mind to it,” he told Deseret News, as reported by Ultimate Classic Rock. “It was quite liberating to play someone like that.”
Murray famously got under Richard Dreyfuss’ skin on that movie (Dreyfuss called him an “Irish drunken bully”), but one actor Murray didn’t get to pester was future Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow.

Following the breakthrough success of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, every TV network in the 2010s wanted to emulate its crass, punchy, anarchic humor, but some networks weren’t ready to pay the troll toll.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Kaitlin Olson is finally enjoying her well-deserved moment in the spotlight now that she's smack-dab in the middle of the zeitgeist following two straight decades of TV excellence. Between the return of Hacks, the upcoming 17th season of Always Sunny and the swift renewal of High Potential, Olson is now ubiquitous in the TV world, despite the inability of some networks to make her distinct style of comedic performance work for their delicate, corporate sensibilities. While the ascension of Olson to the top of the TV A-list has been a long time coming, her road to multi-network superstardom wasn’t without its pitfalls, as anyone who watched the unjustly...

You’re not alone if you’re still thinking about the tumultuous ending to High Potential’s freshman season. Fans are foaming at the mouth for more Morgan Gillory, and for good reason.
The ABC series came out of nowhere and gave viewers everything they could want in a police procedural. While the show isn’t exactly redefining the genre, it brings audiences precisely what they want.
There’s a good chance High Potential fans will never truly be satiated by any single season. I’d like to point out that the series is still a hot topic among fans.
(Mitch Hasseth/Disney)
That’s because thirteen episodes were just not enough. In the world of broadcast television, people want a full season of their regularly scheduled shows.
Is that what you want? Well, let me tell you, we’ll probably never get it. The crux is that the reason...

Spike Lee and Denzel Washington's newest collaboration, Highest 2 Lowest, gives fans a first sneak peek of what to expect from the upcoming remake. A new image from the anticipated thriller offers a look at Washington's character as the film secures a major festival release before its theatrical debut.
Per Variety, a preview image from Highest 2 Lowest shows Washington in a sweater and baseball cap riding the subway. The first-look image comes with confirmation that the A24 blockbuster will debut out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival next month, with Washington set to attend the annual event. The reunion with Lee continues a 35-year career trend, marking the fifth collaboration between the actor and filmmaker.
Highest 2 Lowest is an English-language reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa's 1963 crime thriller, High and Low, which chronicles a shoe company executive who's extorted as part of an abduction gone wrong.

For many fans, Kaitlin Olson remains Sweet Dee from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. She is fantastic in the role of the female lead, playing the self-absorbed and egotistical waitress at Paddy’s Pub alongside the guys. Nowadays, fans recognize her more as Morgan, the eccentrically dressed, high-iq mom of three from High Potential.
Olson is enjoying the success of her new series, which has been renewed for a second season. Moreover, Always Sunny will be back in June with a new season. Interestingly, she already has plans for the project that she aspires to do next. She wants to do an indie drama that is legitimately funny, adding that she hasn’t seen one in a really long time.

In the nearly two months since its first season took a bow, ABC’s quirky procedural, High Potential, continues to draw in viewers. While a lot of these numbers are folks checking out the much-talked-about series for the first time, we’d wager that some of the tally comes from those who are giving it another pass through to see what they might have missed the first time around. Despite being one of the network’s biggest hits of the year, the Kaitlin Olson-starrer went black after just 13 episodes, but with cameras set to pick up in the near future, fans are looking for the goods — and by that, we mean any scrap or crumb that the creative team will throw our way.

As the 2024-2025 television season winds down, ABC is already looking to the future, renewing veteran dramas “9-1-1,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Rookie” and “Will Trent,” as well as freshman sitcom “Shifting Gears.”
The five shows join the already renewed comedy “Abbott Elementary” and breakout hit drama “High Potential” as scripted shows returning to the network for the 2025-2026 television season.
In terms of new shows, the network has handed a straight-to-series order to “9-1-1: Nashville,” a spinoff of “9-1-1” that will star Chris O’Donnell.
“9-1-1” Renewed for Season 9
Produced by 20th Television in association with Ryan Murphy Television and Brad Falchuk Teley-Vision, and set to enter its ninth season (third on ABC), “9-1-1” was created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, and explores the high-pressure experiences of first responders — including police officers, firefighters and dispatchers — who are thrust into the most frightening, shocking and heart-stopping conditions. The first three episodes of Dimension 20's Fantasy High adaptation dropped on Webtoon at the end of March, and so far, we seem to be in the Owlbear spirit! The setup of the characters is giving fans everything they could want: from Gorgug and Fabian's fight to Riz being spiked in the trash and dubbed "The Ball." The comic seems to be framed from the point of view of Riz, our young goblin unlicensed Pi. This makes sense, since it means the audience will be following the story through Riz's discovery of information to help his quest of finding his missing babysitter. Riz is right at the heart of the plot, so it would make sense for him to be our focal point.
The problem is that he doesn't really look like a goblin: on Webtoon, he's just a tiny green guy. Part of what makes Riz as...

ABC is renewing four dramas and one comedy series, Variety has learned.
The Disney-owned broadcaster has picked up new seasons of “9-1-1,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Rookie,” and “Will Trent” as well as “Shifting Gears.” The renewals will bring “9-1-1” to Season 9, “Grey’s Anatomy” to Season 22, “The Rookie” to Season 8, “Shifting Gears” to Season 2, and “Will Trent” to Season 4.
ABC had previously announced renewals for both “High Potential” and the hit comedy “Abbott Elementary.” That means that the only current ABC show still awaiting word on a renewal is “Doctor Odyssey.” ABC has opted not to order any pilots this season, but did order the “9-1-1” spinoff “9-1-1: Nashville” straight-to-series, with Chris O’Donnell set for a lead role.
Of today’s renewals, only “Shifting Gears” was seen as a toss up for a new season. The Tim Allen-Kat Dennings multi-cam suffered a noticeable drop off in the ratings since its January debut.

ABC’s The Rookie drew its largest audience of the season — in several seasons, in fact — with its March 25 episode.
The drama hit season highs in both total viewers (8.25 million) and adults 18-49 (1.67 rating, equivalent to about 2.24 million people in that demographic) with three days of cross-platform viewing. About 43 percent of the total audience (3.57 million viewers), and more than 70 percent of the show’s 18-49 rating (1.19), came via streaming.
The 8.25 million viewers were the most for The Rookie after three days since January 2023, midway through the show’s fifth season. The 18-49 rating was the show’s best since the penultimate episode of season two in May 2020.
The March 25 episode, titled “Speed,” found John (Nathan Fillion) and Celina (Lisseth Chavez) in a hostage situation while Tim (Eric Winter) challenged Lucy’s (Melissa O’Neil) decision-making.

The will-they-won't-they dynamic is a tale as old as time. Most notably, in sitcoms, this relationship between two characters allows a series to go on long-term without the main couple getting stale. This idea works not just in comedies but in many long-running procedurals. It is also one of the biggest draws to the crime series Bones. Inspired by real-life anthropologist Kathy Reichs, the series features Temperance "Bones" Brennan, a genius in the field. Her extreme intelligence contradicts her inexperience with personal relationships.
Throwing in forthright Seeley Booth is designed to test Brennan and create tension throughout the series. At first, the two are just partners, but they go on to pursue romantic feelings for each other and eventually form a family. Bones is not the first series to attempt this, even if it does it very well. For fans who are yearning to recapture this classic dynamic, there are...

The producer behind the rather infamous anime series, High School DxD, played a big brain move to shake things up and create a win-win situation for both the industry and fans. Why? In case you didn’t know, all this time, a majority of anime sales within the industry used to come from the DVDs.
However, with the rise of online streaming, accessing your favorite anime shows has become so easy that people are now reluctant to buy those physical copies. This has taken a major hit in the industry revenue!

But instead of fighting the trend, producer Satoshi Motonaga decided to lean into it! He came up with a clever plan to incentivize fans to buy physical copies, and honestly, it turned out to be a total game-changer for the ecchi genre.
A true man of culture would buy the uncensored Blu-Ray version any day!

I love Dutch Marich’s Horror in the High Desert. His low-budget take on mockumentary horror ends with one of the scariest reels I’ve seen in a horror movie… ever. I’m not one to overreact, but when I saw what I saw, I had to pause the film just to catch my breath. Naturally, I was desperate for more, and Marich is slowly carving out a name for himself with not just one, but two additional High Desert films, with more promised in the future. It’s a desert I haven’t yet been disappointed to be lost in. But a star on TikTok seems a bit lost.
In our review of the sequel, Horror In The High Desert 2: Minerva, we wrote, “Horror In The High Desert 2: Minerva is a terrifying found footage experience that’ll have you crawling out of your skin.” And with last year’s third entry,...

Robert Pattinson is undeniably one of the best actors working in the current film industry. The British actor's first major role was in the Harry Potter franchise as Cedric Diggory, but it was his role as Edward Cullen in the Twilight series that projected him further into the spotlight. Thankfully, after those movies were over, Pattinson broke free from the type-casting curse and was able to present his willingness to play various types of characters with different accents.
If one only watched him in Twilight, they would never realize how amazing of an actor Pattinson actually is. For over ten years now, Pattinson has proven how capable a leading and supporting actor he is, with characters that range from wacky to cool to sympathetic to intimidating. The recent release of Bong Joon-Ho's Mickey 17further confirms that statement as he plays multiple versions of a single character. From The Batman to some A24 films,...

In recent seasons, The Rookiestarted telling bigger stories, often taking a case from arrest all the way to court. While this is how most police procedurals tackle their weekly cases, what made the show stand out was its focus on patrol officers. The producers said that Season 7 represents a "pivot" back to the original idea for the show.
The addition of two new training officers -- Deric Augustine as Miles Penn and Patrick Keleher as Seth Ridely -- helps the series get back to the grounded storytelling that made it a hit. While there are episodes that introduce a big spectacle for TV, most of the time the characters and their cases have a narrow personal focus.

While vampires are known to turn into bats in fiction, British actor Robert Pattinsonis probably the only person known to have done just that in real life, making his initial breakthrough as vampire Edward Cullen in the Twilight franchise before capping off his ascendance to stardom by becoming the latest actor to take on the eponymous hero in the Batman franchise. His latest role is as the down-on-his-luck protagonist in Bong Joon-ho's sci-fi dark comedy, Mickey 17 (2025); it's the director's first film since his brilliant, Oscar-winning satire Parasite (2019).
But devoted fans of Pattinson will know that Mickey 17 is not the first sci-fi film in which he portrays a destitute man forced by a dystopian government into embarking on a mission that he is unlikely to survive. Nor is it his first time collaborating with an acclaimed director from outside the US and the UK. Indeed, Pattinson already satisfied both...

There are plenty of Batman cartoons out there, from the superlative "Batman: The Animated Series" to the underrated 2004 series "The Batman" to the new and fresh "Batman: Caped Crusader." But there's another cartoon even the most ardent Bat-fans may not have heard of — because it was never actually made.
"Gotham High" would've shown Bruce Wayne's teenage years as he attends high school alongside Batman's future villains, who all already resemble their costumed selves. Pitched in 2009 or so, the series never made it past the concept stage. Warner Bros. had previously floated a teen Batman cartoon in the late '90s to cash in on "Buffy The Vampire Slayer." That resulted in "Batman Beyond," a cyber-noir imagining a future where an aged Bruce Wayne trains teenager Terry McGinnis to be a new Dark Knight.

Like a tornado, High Potential fiercely tore its way through the 2024-2025 broadcast television season. The show quickly rose to the top of everyone’s “Watch” list.
From its impeccable writing to casting talented actors to play likable characters, the series has rewritten the book on how to make a police procedural exciting without reverting to over-the-top drama.
So, how in the world could High Potential improve itself when the show is already a hit across the board?
(Pamela Littky/Disney)
First, we are using the term “improve” rather loosely. If anything, there’s nothing to take away from the series. It’s more about adding to what makes High Potential such a fantastic series.
To start, as great as it is to see Miss Mama Morgan looking like a pro at juggling work and family, it would be even better to see how she was before becoming a fierce mama bear.

Peter Engel, who executive produced Saved by the Bell and a host of other teen sitcoms for NBC, died Tuesday at his home in Santa Monica, his son Stephen David Engel announced. He was 88.
The show that became Saved by the Bell began life as Good Morning, Miss Bliss on Disney Channel. The series at the time focused on Hayley Mills, who played the title character, and her students at an Indianapolis junior high school. That show lasted only one season, but after a retooling (and change in setting to Southern California), the NBC-produced show was relaunched as Saved by the Bell and became both a staple of NBC’s Saturday lineup from 1989-93 and a touchstone show for Gen X and millennial viewers.
The show helped launch the careers of its young cast — Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Tiffani Thiessen, Mario Lopez, Elizabeth Berkley, Dustin Diamond and Lark Voorhies — and spawned a...

To pilot or not to pilot has been a question broadcast networks have been asking themselves for more than a decade and are increasingly answering ‘no’ to, especially when it comes to the traditional pilot season in the months leading to the May upfronts. We haven’t gotten a single pilot order in 2025 so far. While that is about to change with a handful of orders coming up, the pilot drought has been persistent amid an industry contraction and linear viewing decline, especially as the networks are still dealing with the backlog caused by strike-related delays.
Broadcasters these days often opt for economically efficient planted spinoffs that shoot as regular episodes of existing drama and comedy series or for development rooms and straight-to-series orders, primarily on the drama side. That is ironic because most of the biggest new drama hits of the last two seasons, CBS’ Tracker and Matlock and ABC’s High Potential,...

One of the most unhinged celebrity guest stars on "Family Guy" was James Woods, who played himself repeatedly in the show's early years. His character was absurdly petty and self-centered; he tries to ruin Peter's life on multiple occasions and even destroys one of the only good scripts Brian's ever written. The character did try to make amends in the season 9 premiere, "And Then There Were Fewer," but he was promptly murdered before he could do so.
His death was retconned in the season 10 episode, "Tom Tucker: The Man and His Dream," where he's back in his usual villainous role. This time he convinces Peter to abandon his job as Tom Tucker's Hollywood agent, only to turn out to be so high-maintenance that Peter quickly regrets the decision. In season 15, Woods would go on to host the meta behind-the-scenes episode, "Inside Family Guy." It's a lot like the underrated...

Four-time Grammy winner Keith Urban has joined CBS’s upcoming music competition series The Road. The series, set to debut during the fall 2025 primetime season, comes from prolific producer Taylor Sheridan, Blake Shelton, David Glasser, and Lee Metzger.
“I spent a lot of my underage life playing in some seedy pubs, sometimes just for the bartender. So I love the idea of throwing artists into a real-world environment to find out if they are artists,” said Keith Urban. “Paying your dues sucks, but there are things in this business that can’t be taught, like how to put together a set list, whether to extend or cut a song during your performance or how to work the crowd. For me, touring has always been my first love. It’s where the rubber meets the road. But it...
