By the ripe age of 27, the virtuoso card player Stu Ungar had won two back-to-back World Series of Poker titles, following a gin rummy career so successful that he reportedly had a hard time finding people to play him.

Seventeen years and one more World Series of Poker title later, he was found dead in a Vegas motel room of a heart attack with a small amount of drugs in his system after years of addiction.

Per Variety, a preview image from Highest 2 Lowest shows Washington in a sweater and baseball cap riding the subway. Highest 2 Lowest is an English-language reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa's 1963 crime thriller, High and Low, which chronicles a shoe company executive who's extorted as part of an abduction gone wrong.

ABC is renewing four dramas and one comedy series, Variety has learned.

The Disney-owned broadcaster has picked up new seasons of “9-1-1,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Rookie,” and “Will Trent” as well as “Shifting Gears.” The renewals will bring “9-1-1” to Season 9, “Grey’s Anatomy” to Season 22, “The Rookie” to Season 8, “Shifting Gears” to Season 2, and “Will Trent” to Season 4.

ABC had previously announced renewals for both “High Potential” and the hit comedy “Abbott Elementary.” That means that the only current ABC show still awaiting word on a renewal is “Doctor Odyssey.” ABC has opted not to order any pilots this season, but did order the “9-1-1” spinoff “9-1-1: Nashville” straight-to-series, with Chris O’Donnell set for a lead role.

Of today’s renewals, only “Shifting Gears” was seen as a toss up for a new season. The Tim Allen-Kat Dennings multi-cam suffered a noticeable drop off in the ratings since its January debut.

ABC’s The Rookie drew its largest audience of the season — in several seasons, in fact — with its March 25 episode.

The drama hit season highs in both total viewers (8.25 million) and adults 18-49 (1.67 rating, equivalent to about 2.24 million people in that demographic) with three days of cross-platform viewing. About 43 percent of the total audience (3.57 million viewers), and more than 70 percent of the show’s 18-49 rating (1.19), came via streaming.

The 8.25 million viewers were the most for The Rookie after three days since January 2023, midway through the show’s fifth season. The 18-49 rating was the show’s best since the penultimate episode of season two in May 2020.

The March 25 episode, titled “Speed,” found John (Nathan Fillion) and Celina (Lisseth Chavez) in a hostage situation while Tim (Eric Winter) challenged Lucy’s (Melissa O’Neil) decision-making.

Seven up-and-coming television writers have been chosen for the selective and intensive Lab, which is now in its ninth year.

Supported by the Golden Globe Foundation and Shivhans Pictures, the lab focuses on preparing women writers and writers of underrepresented genders for a career in writing television. Returning on March 11th after a week hiatus, The Rookie Season 7, Episode 9, "The Kiss" will pick up from the previous episode's cliffhanger ending where one of the regular characters' lives hangs in the balance. It promises to be a deeply emotional episode.
