The Dramatic True Story Behind Netflix’s ‘Bank Under Siege’
Image
Barcelona, Spain: May 23, 1981. The Central Bank of Barcelona opened its doors as it did any other day, seemingly a day that promised to be as uneventful as any other. It was a hostage drama that played out over 37 hours, eliciting concern worldwide from people captivated by the unfolding situation. It's an event brought to life in the new Netflix series Bank Under Siege (Asalto al Banco Central), a Spanish production starring Miguel Herrán, María Pedraza, and Hovik Keuchkerian. Bank Under Siege Review: Political Drama Reimagined
Image
In the early stages of Spain’s democracy, a risky bank robbery would become a turning point to test the country’s new political order. “Bank Under Siege” brings back to life the amazing events of May 23, 1981, when eleven men in masks broke into Barcelona’s Central Bank and turned what seemed like a heist into a powerful political statement.

Three months after a failed military coup to remove Spain’s new democratic government, these thieves took more than 200 hostages. They demanded that Colonel Antonio Tejero and the other people who were involved in the coup be freed. What at first looked like a simple criminal operation turned out to be a complicated political move meant to throw off the country’s delicate shift to democracy.

The show is set in Spain after Franco’s death and shows a country still dealing with its authoritarian past. King Juan Carlos and...

However, when Tejero refuses to be released because he doesn’t know who the masked men are, problems start to occur. Real-Life Documents In ‘Bank Under Siege’: Who Hid The Documents In The Bank Locker, & Why?
Image
So, the truth is, no one really knows if the secret document featured in Bank Under Siege is real or not. The entire narrative is based on the accounts of the real-life Jose Juan Martinez Gomez, the mastermind of the 1981 Central Bank robbery, who claimed that the former director of Cesid, Emilio Alonso Manglano, had hired him to steal a briefcase from bank safe deposit box number 156. But hold on, what was really inside these documents, and why was it so important for the director of the secret service that he funded a heist just to retrieve the documents?

According to Martinez, these documents had some confidential details about the infamous Operation Armada. Now what was that? Without going much deeper into the political history of Spain, you might just want to know that the country was going through a transition phase during the early 1980s. And even though former...

Real-Life Jose Juan Martinez Gomez In ‘Bank Under Siege’: Where Is “Number 1” Now?
Image
Played by the charismatic Miguel Herran, the character of Jose Juan Martinez Gomez, also known as “Number One” and “El Rubio” (the blonde), is based on a real-life person of the same name. According to the reports, he was just 25 years old when he pulled off the Central Bank robbery on May 23, 1981, in Barcelona, Spain. As per the series and real-life accounts, Martinez and his friends had previously been arrested for various armed robberies, though not much is known (or has been reported) about Gomez’s past life. It could be possible that the makers of Netflix’s Bank Under Siege added a few fictional elements to Gomez’s backstory to make his character appear much more realistic.

The fourth episode focused primarily on Martinez’s past, where we found out that he was raised on the streets of Almeria, where he used to rob local jewelry stores and banks from a very young age.

‘Bank Under Siege’ Ending Explained & Finale Recap: Did Manglano Plan The Banco Central Heist?
Image
Given how the bank heist was over in the fourth episode of the Netflix miniseries, the fifth episode was all about the repercussions of the robbery, and Bank Under Siege’s ending finally revealed who was actually behind the operation. Initially, the robbers who held around 300 people hostage at the Central Bank of Barcelona said that they wanted the freedom of the former Lt. Colonel of the Civil Guard, Antonio Tejero, and three other prominent leaders who were arrested after the failed coup of February 23, 1981. But when Tejero denied his involvement in this incident, the leader of the robbers, Jose Juan Martinez, pretty much admitted that they were bluffing and they were in there just for the money. There were talks about smuggling some secret documents under the garb of stealing all the cash in the lockers, but given how Martinez and his right-hand man, Cuevas, were the only ones aware of this hidden agenda,...

‘Bank Under Siege’ Recap (Episodes 1-5): What Happens To Francisco Lopez & Maider Garmendia?
Image
Daniel Calparsoro’s Netflix series, Bank Under Siege, takes us back to 1981, when a gang of robbers orchestrated a heist at the Central Bank of Barcelona. The series is inspired by true events, though many fictional plot points have been added, and certain creative liberties have also been taken. The country was going through a political upheaval at that point in time, and there was a state of chaos and uncertainty. A coup was attempted just 3 months before the heist, and so, at first, it was believed that both events were linked. Let’s find out who the mastermind of the heist was, and if the real perpetrators were ever caught and charged.

Spoiler Alert

Was the heist committed by the civil guards?

At the beginning of Bank Under Siege, we saw that, after the attempted coup conducted under the leadership of Lt. Colonel Antonio Tejero, everybody believed that the...

‘Bank Under Siege’ Netflix Review: Yet Another Miniseries That Could Have Been A Movie
Image
Netflix releases a lot of miniseries every year, and a lot of them fail to justify why they needed to tell their stories in an episodic fashion instead of taking the feature film route. If we take a look at the streaming platform’s 2024 slate so far, Fool Me Once was absolutely atrocious. The Indrani Mukerjea Story seemed like an overlong PR stunt. Baby Reindeer was phenomenal, sure. Eric was so goddamn listless. Ic 814: The Kandahar Hijack seemed like a live-action version of the incident’s Wikipedia page. The Perfect Couple seemed so disinterested in its own story. And then there was The Last Night at Tremore Beach, which spent over 8 hours spinning some elaborate tale and then eventually revealed that maybe all of it had been a figment of its protagonist’s mind. Now, we have Bank Under Siege in our hands. Does it justify its miniseries tag?...

‘Bank Under Siege’ True Story Explained: Is Maider Garmendia Based On A Real-Life Person?
Image
Bank Under Siege (or Asalto Al Banco Central in Spanish), directed by Daniel Calparsoro, is based on true events that shook all of Spain on 22nd May 1981. A group of 11 armed men with masks on their faces entered the Central Bank of Barcelona to rob the bank. While initially it appeared that these were some professional bank robbers, later it was speculated that the criminals might have a political motive. [Spoiler Alert] Most of the things shown in Netflix’s Bank Under Siege are true. Such tragic events did take place in real life, but the creators of the show have taken a few creative liberties, like adding certain fictional characters, and incorporated a few conspiracy theories based on real-life interviews, mainly to dramatize the narrative and take the entertainment quotient a notch above.

In real-life too, the assailants had demanded the release of political prisoners of the country, which made the...

Netflix’s New Releases Coming in November 2024
Image
A topical historical drama depicting the creation of IVF; a paranoid thriller series starring Colman Domingo; a bracingly original crime musical, and awards contender, from Jacques Audiard; the second part of the final season of Cobra Kai; and a reverential big-screen adaptation of a Pulitzer-winning August Wilson play are some of the highlights among the new films and series hitting Netflix in November.

On Nov. 7, action and mystery drama Outer Banks returns to Netflix. The first half of season four ended with several cliff-hangers for the Pogues, many of which should be resolved, to some degree, in the second half of the season. Over on Kildare Island, Rudy Pankow’s JJ probably gets the biggest bomb dropped on him when he learns that he’s not the son of his alcoholic and abusive father, Luke. The cast have promised “craziness” so expect some more jaw-dropping revelations.

In a big movie month for Netflix,...
