Samuel L. Jackson’s Fan-Favorite Sports Drama Stages a Comeback on Streaming
Image
Only a few years before he debuted as Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and eventually became the highest-grossing movie star in global box office history, Samuel L. Jacksonheadlined the inspirational sports drama Coach Carter. The movie was based on a true story, and was a modest hit at the box office upon its release in 2005, grossing over $75 million worldwide. Coach Carter is also notable for being Channing Tatum's debut film. The movie has since become something of a home video favorite, a reputation that it lived up to recently, when it debuted on Netflix.

Coach Carter was the sixth-most-watched film on Netflix's worldwide charts on August 8, jumping three spots from August 7. It beat out the likes of Gladiator II, The Gambler, Storks, and An Honest Life, which brought up the second half of the list. The number one film on Netflix continues to be the poorly reviewed romantic drama My Oxford Year,...

Korean Horror Film 'Holy Night: Demon Hunters' Starring MCU Actor Tops Netflix Charts
Image
Korean-language films and TV shows have been surging onNetflix in recent years. This has especially been the case since the release of Squid Game season 1 in 2021, which became an international sensation and led to an increased interest in K-dramas overall.

This also came after the vibrant Korean film market was becoming more well-known across the globe, even outside K-drama. Bong Joon-Ho's 2019 film Parasite historically won the Best Picture award and served as a great example of the interesting and socially conscious work coming out of Korea.

In reaction to these various trends, Netflix has been leaning into its Korean-language content more in recent years. This was especially true this year, when the streamer kicked off Q1 by announcing the release of 29 Korean-language films and TV shows.

After TV success with When Life Gives You Tangerines and Weak Hero Class 2, Korean films have also been doing well on Netflix. Most recently,...

John Boyega's Torn From the Headlines Thriller Is a Sleeper Hit on Netflix
Image
Star John Boyega has had a tremendous post-Star Wars run. After playing Finn in the sequel trilogy, Boyega headlined a string of well-reviewed genre films, returning to his roots. He broke out with a charming lead role in the British science-fiction film Attack the Block, before being cast in one of the lead roles in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens. Among his recent films is the drama-thriller Breaking, which was released theatrically in 2022, following a premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. The fact-based movie was compared to the Al Pacino classic Dog Day Afternoon, and earned excellent reviews. Although it didn't make much of a dent at the box office, Breaking is climbing up the streaming charts following its debut on Netflix.

According to FlixPatrol, Breaking was the ninth-most-watched film on Netflix worldwide on August 5. It outperformed An Honest Life, and finished just behind Gladiator II. The...

‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Becomes No. 4 Most-Watched English Language Netflix Movie of All Time, Securing 158 Million Views
Image
“KPop Demon Hunters” made Netflix history during the week of July 28, becoming the streamer’s fourth most-watched English-language movie to date. In the seven weeks since its debut, the action musical secured 158.8 million views.

The animated movie from Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans has now been more widely watched in its first 90 days than Ryan Reynolds and Jennifer Garner’s “The Adam Project,” Sandra Bullock’s “Bird Box,” Cameron Diaz and Jaime Foxx’s “Back in Action,” Sam Esmail’s “Leave the World Behind,” Ryan Gosling’s “The Gray Man,” Millie Bobby Brown’s “Damsel” and Robert Rodriguez’s “We Can Be Heroes.” It also bumped “We Can Be Heroes” out of Netflix’s top 10 most popular English-language movies list.

And since the 90-day cutoff for “KPop Demon Hunters” won’t happen until mid-September, chances are high that ranking will only be going up, up, up.

Despite the success of Netflix’s latest hit,...

Netflix’s An Honest Life Cast And Character Guide
Image
Being politically aware is one of the foremost responsibilities of a young person. In a world where your future is shaped by decisions made above you, choosing to stay uninformed about your rights and surroundings only strengthens the systems that’s built upon your silence. But when that awareness is twisted or misunderstood, the consequences can be dangerous. Netflix’s latest Swedish thriller, An Honest Life, explores what happens when a young man falls in with the wrong crowd under the guise of political ideology and a misguided rebel mentality.

Spoilers Ahead

Nora Rios as Max

Swedish actress Nora Rios plays Max, an enigmatic and alluring anarchist with a dangerously magnetic charm. Once an art history student, she now lives in Charles’ house with a group of like-minded friends, embracing the lifestyle of a modern-day hippie revolutionary. Rios is fantastic as the deluded yet captivating young woman who truly believes...

An Honest Life Ending Explained And Full Story: Who Shot Joyce?
Image
Russian lit nerds will spot it right away: Raskolnikov 2.0 has arrived, and this time he’s Swedish. In the coming-of-age thriller An Honest Life, Netflix drops us into Lund University, Sweden, where yet another law student decides that moral obligations are for losers, and chasing chaos with a hot anarchist instead is a better use of his tuition. Like Dostoevsky’s brooding antihero, Simon starts to believe he’s above boring lives and boring laws, until rebellion stops being romantic and starts getting blood on his hands. Borrowing Godard and Truffaut’s favorite ingredients—politically disillusioned youth, ideological angst, and a taste for self-destruction—An Honest Life turns political romance into something far moodier and messier, with just enough noir to keep the guilt sexy.

Spoilers Ahead

What happens in the movie?

Simon, a bright student from a modest background, lands a spot at Lund University, trading his dream...

‘An Honest Life’ Movie Summary: Did Simon And Max End Up Together?
Image
In Netflix’s 2025 Swedish release, An Honest Life, a young law student, Simon, starts questioning the purpose of his existence when he crosses paths with a gang of bandits. Simon had always wanted to be a writer, but he didn’t have anything interesting to write about. So, he decided to pursue the next best thing—law. He figured learning the rules of the world would at least help him get a well-paying job. But soon, he realized that the race to the top of the career ladder was already rigged, and no matter what he did, the seats to the best jobs and internships were reserved for the students who came from generational wealth. Compared to his life, the lives of bandits he saw stealing jewelry on his first day at Lund seemed liberating. Their purpose resonated with him, and when he noticed one of the members, Max, waiting outside his university,...

‘An Honest Life’ Ending Explained: Did Simon Find Max And The Bandits?
Image
An Honest Life’s ending was centered around a final confrontation between Charles’ bandits and Simon. Simon was a law student at Lund University who got mixed up with the wrong crowd the day he set foot in the city. He fell in love with a girl called Max, who introduced him to the anarchist named Charles and the team of thieves that worked for him—Robin, Dinah, and Gustaf. Since Simon wasn’t all that interested in becoming a lawyer, he gravitated towards this modern version of the Merry Men and began fraternizing with them on a regular basis. He officially became a part of the team when he played an integral role in the burglary of a showroom for expensive watches. The next step involved partaking in a robbery at the house of his wealthy roommate, Ludvig, but things went sideways and almost led to the death of the housekeeper,...

‘An Honest Life’ Netflix Review: A Dishonest “Eat The Rich” Movie
Image
2019 was a big year for movies about classism. The most popular one out of the lot was Parasite, which not only talked about the massive economic chasm that exists between the upper and the lower classes but also highlighted how it leads to a lack of class solidarity between the lower classes. Knives Out was a pointed commentary on how the wealthy can’t even imagine sharing their property and riches with the child of an immigrant, even though, morally and ethically speaking, the latter had more claim on their inheritance than the former. Article 15 showed that it’s pointless to talk about class divide without bringing up caste, and the list goes on. While, in real life, the Covid-19 pandemic underscored the fact that the aforementioned chasm between classes is deeper than we had imagined, entertainment took a weird pivot into celebrating “posh behavior” under the guise of “critiquing” it.
