Today, Apple TV+ shared a first look at Carême, the upcoming French-language drama starring César Award winner Benjamin Voisin, César Award nominee Jérémie Renier, César Award winner Lyna Khoudri and Alice Da Luz.

The series is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Martin Bourboulon. Carême will make its global debut on Apple TV+ on April 30, 2025, with the first two episodes, followed by one episode weekly every Wednesday through June 11, 2025.

When the Light Breaks, a quiet and haunting drama about grief from Icelandic filmmaker Rúnar Rúnarsson, won the Dragon Award for Best Nordic Film at the 48th Göteborg Film Festival. The award, which comes with a 400,000 Swedish krona ($36,000) cash prize, was announced during the closing gala Sunday night.

Shot on 16mm, When The Light Breaks stars Elín Hall (Cold, Let Me Fall) as a young art student confronted with a sudden loss who has to navigate love, friendship and grief over an endless long summer day in Iceland. The film premiered in the Cannes’ Un Certain Regard lineup.

The Göteborg jury, which included filmmakers Ella Lemhagen, Philippe Lesage, Athina Rachel Tsangari, cinematographer Jp Passi and actor Frida Gustavsson, praised the film for its “masterfully calibrated mise en scène, its sensitivity and delicate lightness, and its unexpectedly uplifting treatment of grief.”

When The Light Breaks, the latest film from Icelandic filmmaker Rúnar Rúnarsson, has won the Dragon Award for Best Nordic Film at this year’s Göteborg Film Festival. The award is the festival’s top competitive honor.

The award comes with a Sek 400,000 cash prize. The competition jury featured filmmaker Athina Rachel Tsangari, cinematographer Jp Passi, filmmaker Ella Lemhagen, director Philippe Lesage, and actor Frida Gustavsson.

Runarsson’s film, which opened the Cannes Un Certain Regard sidebar in May last year, received the 400,000 Sek Goteborg prize.

“Home” is the theme of the 4th edition of the Red Sea Film Festival as it returns to its original location, but in a sleek custom-built venue, in the recently renovated Al-Balad district in Jeddah, a Unesco World Heritage site.

Kaleem Aftab, the fest’s head of international programming, says that home is a fitting theme for this year’s edition since the festival increasingly serves as a key platform for Africa, Arab and Asian cinema, and its impact is now all-year-round through the work of the Red Sea Film Foundation.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker will preside over the Jeddah, Saudi Arabia film festival’s features-competition jury this year, Red Sea announced on Thursday via Instagram. Lee’s impressive filmography includes “Do the Right Thing” (1989), “Malcolm X” (1992), and “BlacKkKlansman” (2019), for which he won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar. “BlacKkKlansman” was also nominated for Lee’s directing and for Best Picture.

On Monday, the festival — which will run Dec. 6 to 14 in Jeddah, on the Red Sea’s eastern shore — announced the main lineup of its fourth edition, which will open with the world premiere of Egyptian director Karim Shenawy’s musical drama “The Tale of Daye’s Family.” The film follows an 11-year-old Nubian albino with a beautiful voice “who faces adversity due to his unique appearance,” as the provided synopsis puts it.

“For us, this a perfect representation of where this region is headed and what’s happening here,” said the fest’s managing director Shivani Pandya Malhotra at a press conference, noting that the inspirational film is a co-production between Egypt and Saudi.

Chicago – The 60th Chicago International Film Festival (Ciff) announced its competitive award winners on October 25th, 2024, and the recipient of The Gold Hugo in the International Feature Film Competition – the festival’s top honor – is Italy’s ‘Vermiglio” (directed by Maura Delparo), regarding a woman and family complexities in the Italian Alps.

Picking up the Festival’s Silver Hugo in the International Feature Film competition is a multi-internationally produced “All We Imagine as Light” (directed by Payal Kapadia). Atsuko Tanaka, a popular Japanese-language anime voice actor best known for voicing characters such as Ghost in the Shell's Motoko Kusanagi, has passed away at age 61. It was revealed that she had been suffering from an undisclosed illness for roughly a year.

Tanaka's son, and fellow voice actor Hikaru Tanaka announced that Atsuko had passed on Aug. 20, 2024. In a post via the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), her son said, "I would like to express my deepest gratitude on behalf of the fans who loved Atsuko Tanaka, and to the industry people who took care of her during her lifetime. It is very unfortunate that we have to announce the relationship between mother and daughter in this way."
