La Zinemaldia presenta su cosecha española para su 73ª edición. © Ssiff

El Festival Internacional de Cine de San Sebastián ha desvelado la selección patria para su edición número 73, que se celebrará entre el 19 y el 27 de septiembre. El anuncio, como no podía ser de otra forma, se hizo en la sede de la Academia de las Artes y las Ciencias Cinematográficas, en Madrid, donde se ratificó la participación de 22 producciones españolas –17 largometrajes, 2 cortometrajes y 3 series– repartidas entre las secciones oficiales y paralelas del certamen.

Tres de estos filmes competirán por la Concha de Oro, la más alta distinción del Festival, en una edición que sucede al triunfo de Tardes de soledad, de Albert Serra. Este año, los contendientes son Los tigres, de Alberto Rodríguez; Maspalomas, de la dupla Jose Mari Goenaga y Aitor Arregi; e Historias del buen valle, de José Luis Guerin.

Spanish movie powerhouse Atresmedia Cine is partnering with ITV Studios’ Cattleya Producciones and indie outfit La Canica Films to co-produce coming-of-age comedy “Todos los colores,” the feature debut of writer-director Beatriz de Silva.

A now classic parody sketch from 2016 features Adam Driver reprising his role as Kylo Ren, but with a reality show twist. Now, Driver’s “Matt the radar technician” Kylo Ren alter ego has found its way into the hallowed halls of Star Wars canon.

Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #5, written by Charles Soule with art by Stefano Raffaele, places Kylo Ren on Naboo in a situation that is strikingly similar to Driver's iconic Undercover Boss portrayal.

The parallels between the comic's plot and the comedic sketch are too conspicuous to be a mere coincidence, suggesting that Charles Soule himself or members of the Legacy of Vader creative team pulled directly from the hilarious parody.

Green goo and big stars are joining forces once again for the 2025 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, which officially unveiled its host and nominees on Thursday.

Grammy-winning artist Tyla will take the reins as host when the show airs live on June 21 from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif.

The slime-filled spectacle will simulcast across Nickelodeon, TeenNick, Nicktoons, Nick Jr., MTV2, and CMT, as well as international Nickelodeon channels, where fans can watch their favorite TV, movie and sports stars get covered in green glop.

This year’s nominees include a fresh batch of first-timers such as Gracie Abrams, Zach Bryan, Jordan Chiles, Frankie Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Doechii, Keith Lee, Chappell Roan, Shaboozey, Shohei Ohtani, and Florence Pugh.

Film Factory has picked up worldwide sales rights to “Operation Cronos,” a high-stakes thriller centering on the 2017 terrorist Barcelona attacks.

Produced by Nostromo, the shingle behind Netflix hit “Through My Window,” and Beta Fiction, a producer on Spanish box office breakout “Undercover,” “Operation Cronos” will be directed by Fernando González Molina. Molina’s credits include big canvas movies such as “Palm Trees in the Snow” and “The Invisible Guardian,” both from Nostromo.

“Operation Cronos” aims to plunge audiences into one of Europe’s darkest modern tragedies with unprecedented realism and intensity.

Unspooling in the immediate aftermath of the Aug. 17, 2017, attacks in Las Ramblas, with a tense countdown format, it chronicles the relentless efforts and quiet heroism of elite Spanish security forces as they race to track down the terrorists responsible.

Biographical drama El 47 and thriller La Infiltrada tied for the top prize at the 39th Goya Awards held in Spain. Meanwhile, Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door, with Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore, which was shut out of the Best Film contest, took home three prizes.

Additional notable winners included Emilia Pérez, since embattled with controversy due to its star Karla Sofía Gascón‘s resurfaced tweets and other remarks made by auteur Jacques Audiard, which he addressed in a Q&a with Deadline, took home Best European Film. Meanwhile, I’m Still Here, with Fernanda Torres, won Best Ibero-American Film.

The Spanish equivalent of the Oscars, the Academia de Cine unveiled its list of nominations back in December: Marcel Barrena’s El 47 led the pack with 14 mentions, followed by La Infiltrada at 13 nods.

The 39th Goya Awards, Spain’s equivalent to the Oscars, came down to a photo finish, with two films: Marcel Barrena’s true-life drama El 47, and the thriller Undercover from Arantxa Echevarría sharing the top prize for best film.

El 47, the story of the bus driver who helped create modern Barcelona, led the Goyas going into the event, which was held Saturday night in Granada, with 16 nominations. It ended up with five trophies, including both supporting acting honors for Salva Reina and Clara Segura. Carolina Yuste took the best actress for Undercover, where she plays a police officer who infiltrates the Eta terrorist group.

Eduard Fernández won best actor for his leading role in Aitor Arregi and Jon Garaño’s Marco, the true-life tale of Enric Marco, a Spanish trade unionist who falsely claimed to be a concentration camp survivor.

BTeamPictures ha anunciado la fecha de estreno de Muy lejos, el debut en el largometraje de Gerard Oms.

En Muy lejos, Sergio (Mario Casas) viaja a Utrecht con su familia para asistir a un partido de fútbol. Antes de coger el vuelo de vuelta a Barcelona, sufre un ataque de pánico y decide quedarse en Holanda. Incapaz de dar una explicación lógica a los suyos, corta el contacto con su pasado. A partir de ese momento, tendrá que sobrevivir sin dinero, sin amigos, sin casa y sin hablar el idioma, hasta que consiga encontrarse a sí mismo.

La película, basada en la propia experiencia del cineasta, está protagonizada por Mario Casas (Escape), David Verdaguer (La casa) e Ilyass el Ouahdani (Suro). Completan el reparto Raúl Prieto (Normas para una página de sucesos), Nausicaa Bonnín (La infiltrada) y Jetty Mathurin (Vrouwenvleugel), entre otros.

Filmax ha anunciado el inicio del rodaje en el País Vasco de Gaua –en castellano, Noche–, el tercer largometraje de Paul Urkijo Alijo tras Errementari e Irati, en el que transitará de nuevo entre los códigos de la fantasía y la realidad histórica.

Gaua está ambientada en las montañas vascas, en el siglo Xvii. En plena caza de brujas, Kattalin abandona el caserío en mitad de la noche, huyendo de su marido. Perdida en la negrura del bosque, siente una presencia que la persigue. En su camino se encuentra con tres mujeres afables que, mientras lavan la ropa, comparten cuentos de miedo y habladurías del pueblo. Para el asombro de Kattalin, ella misma acabará formando parte de dichas historias.

An unprecedented co-production between Vietnam, Chile and Spain, “The Meeting” has found its director. The project was first announced at the San Sebastian Film Festival in 2023.

Arantxa Echevarría, winner of Spain’s Oscar equivalent, a Goya, for her feature debut “Carmen and Lola” and whose €8.3 million ($8.6 million) box office with political thriller “Undercover” (“La Infiltrada”) has made her the highest-grossing female director in Spain’s cinematic history, has boarded the co-production as its helmer and co-screenwriter.

The political thriller details a historical encounter between Chile’s doomed president Salvador Allende, whose downfall heralded the rise of the brutal military dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet in 1973.

Movistar Plus+ ha anunciado la fecha de estreno de La canción y ha publicado las primeras imágenes de su nueva serie original creada por Pepe Coira y Fran Araújo, el tándem de guionistas responsable de Rapa y Hierro, y dirigida por Alejandro Marín (Te estoy amando locamente).

Casi 24 horas para despedir el año, pero en mundoCine no podemos decir adiós sin antes hacer un repaso del top películas españolas más taquilleras de 2024, con datos extraídos del Icaa (Instituto de la Cinematografía y de las Artes Audiovisuales) y, acompañado, como ya viene siendo habitual por nuestra parte, de información muy útil sobre dónde podéis verlas en estos momentos.

Y es que, si en el top de las películas que más han recaudado a nivel mundial predominaban las sagas –secuelas, secuelas y más secuelas, con Wicked como la única excepción–, el del cine español que más ha triunfado en la cartelera de este año nos ha ofrecido, en cambio, una diversidad de lo más refrescante.

Una gala cuyo protagonismo recayó en la película Solos en la noche, de Guillermo Rojas, que se alzó con cuatro premios y la serie En fin, de David Sainz, que se llevó tres galardones. Ayer se celebró la gala de los 37 premios Asecan. Universal Pictures ha lanzado el primer tráiler y póster de Wolfgang (Extraordinario), una feel good movie familiar basada en la novela homónima de Laia Aguilar y dirigida por Javier Ruiz Caldera a partir de un guion de la propia Laia Aguilar, Carmen Marfà, Yago Alonso y Valentina Viso.

Wolfgang, un niño de diez años con un coeficiente intelectual de 152 y trastorno del espectro autista se ve obligado a vivir con su padre Carles, al que nunca ha visto, tras la repentina muerte de su madre. Carles afronta el reto con ganas y voluntad, pero Wolfgang no soporta su desorden ni su desorganización y lo considera un “bajocien” por su falta de intelecto. Así que, a escondidas, Wolfgang planea conseguir su sueño: entrar en la academia de música Grimald de París, donde estudió su madre, y convertirse en el mejor pianista del mundo.

Spain’s Academia de Cine has unveiled its list of nominations for the 39th Goya Awards, the country’s equivalent to the Oscar. Leading the field is Marcel Barrena’s biographical drama El 47, with 14 mentions. It’s followed by thriller La Infiltrada (Undercover) at 13.

Also in the mix is Segundo Premio (Saturn Return) with 11 nods. The movie about real-life rock band Los Planetas was Spain’s submission for the International Feature Oscar, though it did not make AMPAS’ shortlist cut which was revealed yesterday.

Meanwhile, Spanish maestro Pedro Almodóvar’s first English-language feature, The Room Next Door, scored 10 nominations including Best Director and a pair of Best Actress nods for Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton. It did not surface in the Goyas’ Best Picture race, despite taking the top prize Golden Lion in Venice earlier this year, his first ever top A-list festival prize.

The Goyas will be handed out on February 8 in Granada.

The Spanish film academy gave a surprise snub to its best-known director when Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door was not nominated for best film for the Goya Film Awards, Spain’s equivalent to the Oscars.

The Room Next Door picked up 13 Goya nominations, including best director for Almodóvar and best acting nominations for both of the film’s leads, Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore, but the film was left out of the best picture category. Perhaps the language barrier — it’s Almodóvar’s first English-language feature — counted against it among Spanish academy voters.

Instead, the Goya’s best picture race will include five Spanish-language features: Casa en flames from director Dani de la Orden, Marcel Barrena’s El 47, La estrella azul from Javier Macipe, Arantxa Echevarría’s La infiltrada, and Segundo premio from director Isaki Lacuesta and Pol Rodríguez, which was Spain’s official Oscar submission this year.

Según los datos provisionales de Comscore Spain, la película ha recaudado 1,9 millones de euros en su primer fin de semana de estreno, cifra que se eleva a los 2 millones si se incluyen los preestrenos del domingo anterior. Una opción que ha demostrado ser más que ideal para toda la familia.

En una sólida segunda posición se encuentra La infiltrada, de la bilbaína Arantxa Echevarría, que ha hecho una entrada formidable en la cartelera recaudando 1,1 millones de euros en su primer fin de semana. El thriller, protagonizado por Carolina Yuste y Luis Tosar, se convierte así en el segundo mejor estreno español del año.
