Neal McDonough’s Homestead shocked everyone when it premiered in December during a stacked month of box office contenders and earned $6 million to take the #5 spot, even beating major blockbusters like Gladiator 2 and Red One. The film has since tapered off after its impressive opening weekend, earning $3 million and then $2 million, until it most recently completed its fourth weekend in theaters with just over $1 million. Homestead now sits at $19.3 million at the box office, and it will surely pass the $1 million mark by the end of this weekend, which will likely be its final box office milestone. The film is already outside the top 10 and poised to continue dropping, but it should have no problem juicing past this one last milestone.

At first glance, Homestead – from director Ben Smallbone – might seem like another run-of-the-mill doomsday prepper tale designed to validate hoarding canned goods and ammo. However, there’s more depth lurking beneath the surface.
When a nuclear bomb obliterates Los Angeles, former Green Beret Jeff Eriksson (Bailey Chase) takes his family to the Homestead—a secluded survival haven owned by his wealthy friend Ian Ross. With its self-sustaining gardens, stocked armoury, and endless food supplies, the compound is a prepper’s paradise. But Homestead isn’t simply about the comforts of bunkered survival; it digs into the darker side of fear-driven living and the steep ethical price of protecting oneself at all costs.
The story unfolds as a taut moral drama, centering on the conflict between Ian and his wife Jenna (Dawn Olivieri). Ian is adamant about keeping the gates closed to the desperate, starving masses gathering outside, fearing that helping them would jeopardise their resources.

After being edged out of first place last weekend, Mufasa: The Lion King wrestled the top spot of the box-office weekend from Sonic the Hedgehog by a $2.6 million margin. Other than that, all of the players from last weekend managed to remain on this weekend’s list as well.
Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures saw Mufasa: The Lion King take control of the box-office weekend top ten as it led the weekend with $23.8 million in its third weekend of release. This gives the film an overall total of $168.6 million. This was enough to push Sonic the Hedgehog 3 from the top spot to second place with $21.2 million, bringing the Paramount Pictures’ product a three-week total of $187.5 million. Meanwhile, Nosferatu held steady in third place, adding $13.2 million over its second weekend in release as Focus Features saw the film’s total increase to $69.4 million. Kraven the Hunter is Sony's latest addition to its rocky Spider-Man Universe. The film, which marks the first R-rated entry in the Ssu, has seen the worst performance yet.
Just two weeks following its Dec. 13 release, Kraven the Hunter has already dropped out of the Top 10 at the box office, as reported by Deadline. The superhero film, which gives life to the popular character from the Spider-Man comics, first introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man #15 in August 1964, stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the titular role. However, his recent star power and action roles didn't convince moviegoers to give the Ssu film a shot over the holiday and, instead, focused on other titles.

“Mufasa: The Lion King” (Disney) held the #1 position for both Christmas Day and December 26. Its two-day gross of $26.7 million edged out #2 “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” (Paramount) by over $4 million. However, because “Sonic” last weekend was $28 million ahead of “Mufasa,” who comes out ahead for the full Christmas season remains unclear, though ultimately “Mufasa” could have the edge for total domestic gross.
At this point, 2024 will have an adequate Christmas compared to recent years. Grosses for December 25 and 26 are about $5 million ahead of 2023. But the $116 million two-day total was dramatically lower than the years before Covid struck. From 2016-2019, the two days grossed between $138 million and $177 million. At 2024 prices, that would be as much as $235 million, meaning attendance is down as much as half from those years.

There is a great deal of context surrounding the $60 million No. 1 opening weekend of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and its place in the overall franchise. The 2024 movie, which was directed by Jeff Fowler, stars Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz, Krysten Ritter, Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Idris Elba, and Keanu Reeves. It is the third feature-length installment in the live-action franchise adapting the video game franchise of the same name, which launched in 2020 and also includes the Paramount+ spinoff series Knuckles, focusing on the adventures of the titular echidna voiced by Elba.

Gladiator 2 has already been winding down at the box office for the last week or two, and now that the film is available to purchase on digital platforms like Apple TV+ and Prime Video, it’s likely that it will continue to dwindle even further. Ridley Scott’s historical epic finished the weekend of December 20, its fifth full weekend in theaters with only $4.5 million, taking the #6 spot and falling behind Kraven the Hunter (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Homestead (Neal McDonough). However, its fifth-weekend haul did help Gladiator 2 reach $154 million domestically and pass both Beverly Hill Cop II (Eddie Murphy) and Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) to become one of the top 50 highest-grossing R-rated movies ever, still trailing Fatal Attraction (Michael Douglas) and Scary Movie (Marlon Wayans).

Yellowstone's cast is going in a lot of different directions after working on the hit series. Some of them will stay in the universe by acting in the next installment of the Taylor Sheridan-created franchise. Though Yellowstone season 5 has ended, the series will be getting a sequel show starring Beth and Rip. While other stars from the series are expected to be featured, this means that at the very least, Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser will stay in the Yellowstone universe in their next major project.
Some of the show's ensemble members are relative newcomers, when other Yellowstone actors come from other established TV shows. Such is the case with Dawn Olivieri, who plays villain Sarah Atwood in the series. Prior to her appearance as a villain in the Sheridan series, Olivieri appeared in 41 episodes of the series House of Lies. Now, she has grown more and more as a television actor,...

The Jim Carrey and Ben Schwartz starrer Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has opened with a bang on the week before Christmas. The third film in the video-game-based franchise has raced to the top of the box office despite clashing with Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King. While there is still a long way to go, Sonic 3 seems to be the clear winner this week.
The film jumps off from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and sees Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles band together to stop a threat like no other. Keanu Reeves joined the already-stacked cast to play Shadow, the antagonist. Jim Carrey also reprised his role as Dr. Ivo Robotnik and pulled double-duty by playing Professor Gerald Robotnik too.

After several weeks of Moana 2 atop the box office, the tides have finally shifted as Disney’s animated sequel dropped to #4 over the weekend of December 20 thanks to new arrivals. One of the new premieres that didn’t quite earn the same haul as Moana 2 but did finish one spot behind it this weekend is Homestead, the action thriller starring Neal McDonough and Dawn Olivieri that opened to $6 million from only 1,800 screens, roughly half the total theaters of the big blockbusters like Mufasa: The Lion King. Homestead follows an ex-Green Beret who joins a prepper compound that leads to horrifying truths, and unexpected community. The film earned a 38% score from critics but a 77% rating from general audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.

A little over a week after it arrived in theaters, it feels a lot like everyone has already forgotten Kraven the Hunter. Of course, that's hardly surprising when not that many people actually watched the Sony Pictures-produced Marvel movie last weekend.
However, if Sony was hoping fans might turn up to watch Kraven's one-and-only hunt before the holidays, executives at the studio must be mighty disappointed today.
With a -72% second weekend drop, Kraven the Hunter has grossed only $3.1 million. That takes its domestic total to $17 million and, when its overseas numbers are taken into account, it's earned only $42 million worldwide. The budget, which shot up as a result of delays caused by the pandemic and last year's strikes, was $110 million.
There's some good news, though. A -72% drop is better than Joker: Folie à Deux (-81%) and The Marvels (-78%). It still opened to significantly less than those,...

Few weekends annually are less certain indices of future grosses than the one before Christmas. That said, a combined $97 million for the openings of two new family-oriented titles set theaters up for a healthy holiday season.
“Sonic the Hedgehog 3” (Paramount) was the clear winner with $62 million, with “Mufasa: The Lion King” (Disney) second with $35 million. This is the first time two films on this pre-holiday date have debuted at $35 million or more, and with higher ticket prices today a factor, the best overall since 2011.
The weekend also saw the start of New York/Los Angeles platform runs of two significant awards contenders. New York Film Critics’ Best Film winner “The Brutalist” (A24) despite an over three and a half hour running time averaged nearly $67,000 in four theaters, while Pedro Almodóvar’s first English-language film “The Room Next Door” (Sony Pictures Classics) started with $107,000 in six.

The box office battle between Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Mufasa: The Lion King came to a pretty definitive end this weekend, with the former almost doubling the latter’s business. Indeed, despite a banner year, Disney’s ending 2024 on a downer note, with Mufasa: The Lion King, which sports a $200 million budget, seriously underperforming with a $35 million opening. Note that the 2019 remake of The Lion King opened with nearly $200 million, making this arguably one of the least successful sequels of all time (although the film is technically both a sequel And a prequel).
While Disney is no doubt hoping the decent A-minus Cinemascore will mean the business will pick up over the holidays, it seems unlikely the film will even come close to recouping its budget. The outlook is much rosier for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which easily topped the weekend box office with Deadline reporting a $62 million opening.

Sonic 3 Falls Far Short Of Original Franchise-Best $72 Million+ Debut Projections, Still Handily Beats Mufasa
This article was originally written Saturday Am and has been updated Sunday Am with up-to-date box office projections (in bold), a full chart, and further analysis.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has taken the lead over Mufasa: The Lion King at the pre-Christmas domestic box office. Both movies are follow-ups to successful franchises, with the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 release marking the third live-action feature-length installment in the video game adaptation franchise that also includes the Paramount+ spinoff show Knuckles. Meanwhile, the Disney photorealistic CG musical Mufasa is a prequel to their 2019 remake The Lion King, which grossed $1.66 billion, making it the highest-grossing animated movie of all time until that record was overtaken by Inside Out 2 in 2024.
Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is projected to take No.

He’s the fastest thing alive, after all. “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” is rolling around on top of the box office in its North American opening, collecting $25 million from 3,761 locations across Friday and preview screenings. Meanwhile, “Mufasa: The Lion King” will land in second place, having earned $13.3 million from 4,100 sites so far across the same time frame.
In what some expected to be a more even box office match-up between two family-friendly features starring CG critters, Paramount’s “Sonic” sequel has broken out far ahead of “Mufasa” in its debut. While mid-December weekends can often seem like a calm before a storm, with the public putting off moviegoing as it prepares for the holidays, that’s not slowing down the Blue Blur here. “Sonic 3” nearly bested the $26 million opening day nabbed by “Sonic 2” back in April 2022. The film should have no trouble out-pacing its projections, which had forecast an opening between $55 million and $60 million.

In an era when the fear of disaster feels more apparent, “Homestead” emerges as a strange artifact of our times, wrapped in the frightening aesthetics of a faith-based narrative. Imagine a world destroyed by a nuclear explosion, with chaos unfolding like a black flower. The film, directed by Ben Smallbone, transports us to this hazardous world where survival is more than just a matter of resources; it is also about moral quandaries that challenge our humanity.
Neal McDonough plays Ian Ross, a modern-day patriarch whose huge estate serves as a stronghold against uncertainty. Adapted from Jeff Kirkham and Jason Ross’s “Black Autumn” series, “Homestead” aims to encourage thinking while exploring the complexities of survival. However, it frequently trips over its ambition.

Ben Smallbone’s “Homestead” takes place in a world where foreigners detonate a nuclear bomb off the coast of Los Angeles, the protagonists are saved because they own a Tesla, Bitcoin is the only valuable currency, and the truth can only be told on Right Wing radio. For some people that’s a selling point. For many others, it’s a list of red flags.
It’s easy to think of films like “Homestead” as if they live on the fringe of mainstream media, but though this particular film isn’t a major studio release, they’re hardly uncommon. Hit movies like “Black Hawk Down” and “300” have shamelessly vilified non-white antagonists, portraying them as fodder for heroic, mostly white hunks to mow down with impunity, sometimes in dramatic slow-motion. “Forrest Gump” is the story of a man who does everything he’s told to do, like joining the Army...

Stories about survivors in a post-apocalyptic world continue to fascinate viewers in such streaming series as “Fallout” and “The Last of Us,” but “Homestead” likely marks the first time such a scenario has been used for a faith-based movie. And it definitely is the first time a theatrical film in that genre has been designed as the pilot for a TV series — a fact that, when it becomes clear in the movie’s final minutes, may strike many viewers as a bait-and-switch trick.
Indeed, the TV series gets what can only be described as emphatic promotion in those final minutes, complete with a kinda-sorta coming attraction trailer (not entirely unlike the one Kevin Costner employed at the end of “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1”). One of the lead actors appears on camera to directly address audiences about what lies ahead, along with an on-screen Qr code that the audience can...

The post-apocalyptic movie has become a staple for international cinema actually, with the productions of the category coming one after the other, both on cinema and TV. Based on the book series, “Black Autumn”, “Homestead” attempts to do both, as it will be released in December both as a film and a TV series, headed by Ben Smallbone and produced by Angel Studios.

Since its announcement, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been swimming in controversies, from discussion about its main protagonist’s choices to its gameplay. These issues even resulted in a delay of its release date to February 14th, 2025. Despite these hiccups, players are eager to try the game and explore feudal Japan in an entirely new way.
Players are waiting to see what the game will deliver. | Image Credit: Ubisoft
However, it would be a crime if Shadows didn’t revive one of the most beloved mission types in the franchise: Homestead. These short yet impactful side missions in AC3 allowed players to connect with the community and learn about Connor. If Ubisoft doesn’t bring back an evolved version of the Homestead system in Shadows, fans will undoubtedly be disappointed.

Here’s how we know December is likely to gross over $1 billion: in its first eight days through the upcoming weekend, “Moana 2” (Disney), “Wicked” (Universal), and “Gladiator II” (Paramount) will likely combine to take in around $225 million in U.S./Canada box office.
That’s a full weekend plus Sunday through Thursday after Thanksgiving. The three films through Sunday will have grossed over $700 million — all told through then, most of it for “Moana 2” and “Wicked,” both over $300 million by next Sunday.
Those two are certain to hold most of their theaters through Christmas, where their family appeal should rebound. Ridley Scott’s film will still have some juice left. It’s reasonable that combined all three will gross over $500 million during December.
If they do, it should help push the month over $1 billion. And that would happen even though none of the new Christmas titles is expected to...

“Everyone wants to know how the world ended. This is the story of how it began,” says the narrator in the trailer for “Homestead,” an inspirational survivalist thriller out Dec. 20 from Angel Studios.
As the story starts, newscasters announce “America’s just been attacked!” After a nuclear bomb is detonated in Los Angeles, the nation devolves into unprecedented chaos, according to the logline.
Ex-Green Beret Jeff Eriksson, played by “Longmire” actor Bailey Chase, and his family escape to The Homestead, an eccentric prepper’s fortress nestled in the mountains, the logline continues. As violent threats and apocalyptic conditions creep toward their borders, the residents of The Homestead are left to wonder: How long can a group of people resist both the dangers of human nature and the bloodshed at their doorstep?
Also starring are “Tulsa King” star and “Yellowstone” actor Neal McDonough along with Dawn Olivieri, Jesse Hutch and Olivia Sanabia.

A24 has just released the trailer for Babygirl — an intense and unconventional erotic thriller that plays with power struggle, consent, grooming, and coercion. Our own Chris Bumbray enjoyed the provocative film at TIFF this year, saying in his review, “It’s controversial, but it’s also one of the sexier films to come along in recent memory. Kidman deserves major praise for her consistent refusal to play it safe as an actress.”
Babygirl stars Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos), Antonio Banderas (Desperado), Harris Dickinson (The Iron Claw), Sophie Wilde (Talk to Me), and Jean Reno (Léon: The Professional). Babygirl will cheekily be released in theaters just in time for Christmas viewings, giving it a December 25 release date. That’s the same weekend Disney is releasing Mufasa, Paramount is releasing Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Angel Studios is releasing the faith-based post-apocalyptic film Homestead.
Reijn directed Babygirl from a screenplay she wrote herself.
