Anil Sharma On Vanvaas Emerging As A Box Office Flop

Anil Sharma recalled how his movie did not get enough screens because of Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2 dominating the big screen during the same time. However, he has no regrets since he remembers getting a good response from the people who have already watched the film. He said, “Yes, it is disappointing, but the main issue is that the people have loved the film and they have also cried.

Anil Sharma, as a film director, is popularly known for the Gadar films, which made a huge impact on the silver screen. He did direct a family-oriented film, Apne (2007) with his favorite set of actors, the Deols, and that was a fairly good movie as well for its time. The director is back with a Baghban-ish film that discusses the importance of parents and why they need extra care when they grow old. There’s literally no record pending to be broken for Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2. Right from the opening day, the magnum opus has been enjoying a historic ride at the Indian box office. It’s been over two weeks, but there’s still no sign of slowing down. Today, it will surpass Baahubali 2’s collection of 1031 crores to become the highest-grossing film in the history of Indian cinema. On day 16, the film crossed 1020 crores and is now inches away from creating history.

In the first two weeks (15 days), the Pushpa sequel amassed a staggering 1006.75 crore net at the Indian box office, making history as the fastest entrant into the 1000-crore club. Yesterday, considering new releases like Mufasa: The Lion King, Vanvaas, and others, the film was expected to suffer a dent, but surprisingly, it performed much better than the fresh theatrical arrivals.

Anil Sharma who was all for gritted teeth and clenched fists in Gadar, goes incurably lachrymose in his new film Vanvaas. Set in the saffron splendour of Varanasi, Sharma’s cinema is an old-fashioned weepie with a bleeding heart and visuals that exude an over-saturated emotional meltdown in fits and starts.

It is a familiar tale often told since Shakespeare’s King Lear, of ungrateful children, this time abandoning their father to die in Varanasi. But these progenies from hell are substantially more wretched, less interesting in their toxicity, than their counterparts in the past including the Bachchan bunch in Ravi Chopra’s Baghban.

Nana Patekar plays Tyagi, the dementia-riddled patriarch who spends all his time day dreaming about his dead wife. After being abandoned by his children and their wives in Varanasi (to the sound a clamorous Bhajan), Tyagi who suffers from what seems to be advanced dementia, befriends a mischievous tourist volunteer.
